    Always interesting seeing different people's point of views and likes/dislikes on games. I definitely have a sweet spot in the 2.00-3.00 weight range on BGG for my gaming. I tend to lean towards games that are more casual play.
    Paul's list is full of several games that hit for me. (Viticulture, Honey Buzz, Lost Ruins of Arnak). Flamcraft is on my shelf of opportunity.
    Devin had 1 (Roll Player).

      What's interesting is I (Paul) actually tend to find that weight range to have some of my favorites as well. I think that's why I consider them a miss, I went into them expecting much more than what I got or just something different to what I got.

    Just curious if you've tried Viticulture with the Tuscany expansion? I was always very lukewarm on the base game and "didn't get the hype". Theme and mechanics are great, but it just didn't come together for me. The Tuscany expansion opened things up a bit and provided some different strategies that I thought were interesting. Still not a top game for me, but I am keeping it. Plus my son seems to love it (even though he's more than a decade from being able to enjoy wine!). I guess we'll just call it a "farming/business ownership" game!

      Funny you mention that, I just tried it a couple weeks ago. We actually will have a playthroguh of it within the next couple weeks. While it did improve the game a bit, I really liked the orange buildings and special workers, it's still not one I'm going to gravitate towards.

    Flamecraft was a purchase for my wife. She sent me the link and asked for it specifically. I got it wondering how much of a game there was on it, and happened to be surprised by how fun it was. Easy yes, but has more depth than you'd think.
    It is funny hearing the major complaint is length of a game, because usually it floats in under an hour and worst has been 1.5 hours for a 5 player game.
    I think the art helps sell it, but the game is solid. Too bad you guys didn't enjoy it. It's become a go-to, since it is game we can play after a long, grueling day of work without much setup or tear down.

    7 Wonders - I want to know what other people played at a glance... and I can't really do that in this game. Sushi Go Party! did what this did, but in an easier to understand way.
    One Night Ultimate Werewolf - this game is purely dependent on the group that you play it with in my opinion. If you have a group that just wants to sit there and not talk, then the game ends with nothing happening. Hard pass.
    Twilight Imperium 4th Ed - there's so much randomness in this 4x game, and I just feel that it's not to my liking. I don't mind the big long games, but I feel that a combat based game would allow for combat and victory, and that isn't usually the case. I would rather play an 18xx game or Advanced Civilization where there is less randomness and just as much game playing time, strategy, and player interaction.
    Planet Unknown - Why should my game end because someone else doesn't know how to play Tetris?!?!? If I play well, I should be able to keep going.
    Stockpile - I feel that the lack of information is a nice gimmick for this economic game, but it just doesn't interest me all that much. It just seems that Acquire does something similar with the not knowing what the other person has kind of thing, but it's something that happens in short intervals. I feel that Stockpile kind of can blindside you, and that leaves me feeling meh about it.
    Honourable Mentions:
    After Us - similar to what you both said about it. I also don't necessarily like that I don't know what card I am getting.
    Ticket to Ride - Every time I play this game, it goes on for like 50-70 minutes... and I would rather play Transamerica twice in that same time frame.

      When you say 7 wonders do you mean the regular one or duel? I’ve only ever played duel and this one seems stupid to me too. 3 ways to win but all of them are fairly random in my opinion.

    • @trevorames889
      @trevorames889 7 місяців тому

      @billable1861 1st edition of the original. But I would say that the Leaders expansion makes it even worse.
      As for Duel, I have only played it three times in one sitting. I won all three times because of luck of the cards in the pyramid. Did some skill help me win? Sure. However, uncovering the perfect card at the perfect time won me the games, and I am not a fan of that either.
      I like skill games. If it has luck in it, I like it to be mitigatable.

    Arnak for us its kind a feel good game. We really like the design, the theme as well and its kind of exciting when you explore the sites and dont know which creature will appear. The expansions made it much more versatile and asymetric. But at the end i can agree with you that ita a lot about the research track...

    • @shinypear326
      @shinypear326 7 місяців тому

      I’ve always wondered about situations like these. Sure, games should be the best they can be out of the box and not being that should affect their rating. But in situations like Arnak, where the research track is clearly the most important thing to pursue, is it possible to just nerf the research track or buff the other tracks so that the game feels more balanced? Has anybody house-ruled the game to where it feels more competitive? I love the theme and the expansions are awesome, so if I can tweak the rules to where it’s more fair, I’m more than happy to do that.

    • @dadsanddice
      @dadsanddice  7 місяців тому

      We generally don't like playing with house rule games, just our preferences. If that makes the game better for others then more power to ya. I generally give the game a good amount of plays and player counts before I decide they aren't for me. An expansion usually doesn't fix the issue

    Flamecraft sort of grew on me. I really disliked it the first time I played it. I thought, what a waste of money. 2nd time I played It wasn’t much better BUT I seemed to have enjoyed it. I do love Lost Ruins of Arnak. the expeditions expansion makes it way better, imo.
    I haven’t played that many games, but some that I dislike are: Res Arcana (I can’t seem to wrap my head around it) and The Crew: The Quest for Planet Nine

    Lost Ruins of Arnak is bad for all the reasons Viticulture is so good. In Arnak the theme could be anything, mechanics don't mesh with the theme in a meaningful way, focusing on one part of the board often leads to victory. In Viticulture everything feels polished and deliberate, mechanics match the theme, you can't succeed without careful planning and utilization of all aspects of the game. Viticulture is definitely a top 10 game of all time IMO!

    Out of these games I've played none and only just learning After Us (which I'm disappointed to hear might not be as great as it seems at first glance). But other than that the main reason I haven't played a lot of the other games is that I haven't really wanted to. Lost Ruins of Arnak sounded cool but then I watched a playthrough and was a little "That's it?!". Flamecraft never seemed to appeal to me. This was a great list, but I have to strongly disagree with Flamecraft! I think what makes Flamecraft is the idea of engine building (shops) but on a communal level in that the shops become better for everyone! Maybe as a hardcore gamer it’s not the top pick of games, but I still find it enjoyable, especially as an entry level game.
    My top 5 games that were misses for me:
    #5 - Earth
    The one thing that made this a miss for me was the color palette. I am red-green color deficient (color blind). I could not tell the difference between most of the cards, forcing me to have to ask everyone over and over what the colors were. The mechanics seem really good, but I was just unable to enjoy the game due to not being able to differentiate the cards.
    #4 - Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion
    I haven’t played the full game yet so hopefully that one is better, but I just can’t get through the story. A good story is what really makes an RPG for me and this one was too dark for me. I don’t understand why so many fantasy themed games feel that they have to go into evil cultish rituals with demons and the like. It ruins the game for me. If it didn’t go dark like it did, I’m sure I would love it. I really like the mechanics. But the story kills the game for me.
    #3 - Terraforming Mars
    Even without the dozen expansions, I feel like this game tries to do too much. I admit that I can be prone to AP on occasion, but this game is beyond AP for me. The million cards are the biggest problem. You have to determine somewhat of a strategy at the beginning of the game so as to get a tableau engine going. But the luck of the cards can easily ruin that for you and it is very difficult to switch strategies. I have found myself constantly stuck not knowing what to do because the engine I built has gone flat due to poor card draws and there are just no good alternative options without starting over from scratch. I like Ares Expedition much better and would play that over the original if given the choice.
    #2 - Ark Nova
    I have tried every player count from 1-4 and I have never been able to finish a game! It takes WAY too long. I have reserved 2.5 hours just by myself and it still took too long. Maybe I’m just slow, but I felt like I was going a decent pace and I still just ran out of time.
    #1 - Sleeping Gods
    I WANT to love this game. I love the Above and Below series. I was really hoping that Sleeping Gods would put them all to shame, but it just put me to sleep. I found it very boring and uneventful. I also felt that it was also extremely difficult! To the point of just being hopeless. I tried with my wife and we just couldn’t get into it. I tried again solo and played for hours, patiently waiting for it to pick up, or get interesting, or something, but it just never came.

    • @dadsanddice
      @dadsanddice  7 місяців тому

      I can get behind that with Flamecraft, I just think for what it is and the length I would much rather play other games.

If see yourself from the aspect of a researcher who explores, makes discoveries (resources) and uses them to progress his research, it makes sense and it is really thematic.
