Music: The best known is March No. 1 , and Pomp and Circumstance generally refers to this single piece. It was premiered in London in 1901 and the audience requested two repetitions. In 1902 it was adapted for the coronation of King Edward VII , incorporating the text of the ode " Land of Hope and Glory ."
The formula proved successful, and Elgar composed further marches, presented in 1905, 1907 and finally the fifth in 1930. March No. 4 is rhythmic and ceremonial like the first and contains another important theme in the central section. During World War II , March No. 4 also incorporated lyrics, Alan Patrick Herbert 's patriotic verses that begin "Every man must be free." The other three marches are more melancholic.
Elgar left drafts of a sixth gear, which were converted into a playable version by Anthony Payne in 2006.
