You have single-handedly turned my world upright!! I have been cutting images out of magazines since I was about 13 & still have all of them 30 years later. I know you didn't originate the picture book but this is the first I've heard of it & now I'm beside myself with where to begin!! I cannot wait, I am so uber excited to start my own picture books. I honestly cannot believe I never thought of this before, but wow, yay!! I gotta go get busy!! thank you so much for the inspiration & your book is lovely, especially the "set your heart free" page, actually made me tear up. xoxo kelli
That was so nice! Thank you for sharing. I used to do this type of thing back in the late 80's early 90's in a blank book. Someone found it once and made fun of me for doing such silly things and I've never done one since. I called it my dream book. I'm making another one as soon as possible. No one will ever tell me I'm silly for dreaming and creating again. Love this!
YES!!! I am so glad to hear it. I've had similar experiences and they are so hurtful. It is so empowering when we dream and create - and when we encourage one another to do so! Thanks for letting me know. I'll look forward to your future flip-through :)
My family (Mom & sisters) will say to me "I don't get it" or "Looks like trash to me" ...etc. I just tell myself that I am more artistic than they are and consider myself blessed that I can see the beauty in my work and it is always a plus when I find someone like Jamie that shares that gift.
Robin Donnelly i am in my 50's and love doing these! My mother thinks I am nuts! She doesn't like it at all and felt it was a waste of time. I believe that time spent doing something you love, that inspires you, makes you happy, is not time wasted. I just don't show her my art journals anymore. Never stop doing what you love! Artwork is your own expression. I hope you start doing it again and loving the process.
Robin Donnelly.. Many years ago when I was in college and lived in a dorm all of us girls would cut pictures out of magazines of everything we liked, it could be anything from a model in a bathing suit or puppies or scenery and writing, whatever anything and we would make poster-size collages and hang them on our dorm walls. It was a lot of fun!
WOW that is amazing. It has given me hope to create my next Scrapbook. (I have just finished my first one but it is nothing like yours. My mistake was to put one picture on each page but now I know really how to create my next one. I am 80 years old and have always loved and craft. I have my own little craft room which was my son’s bedroom many years ago. It is now my little sanctuary. Thank you again so much for taking the time to inspire other scrapbookers. June Rose xxxx
Hi there, June Rose. I am delighted that you are inspired and this will give you some ideas for your next one! How wonderful that you have created a little sanctuary for you and your creativity. Have fun creating!
Now I know how to use my magazines, I have a lot that I do not want to get rid of them, waiting for doing something, some day, now I got it. Thank you for sharing that lovely idea.
This was so great to see....after watching so many junk journal things on you=tube I went back to my favorite thing which was gluing favorite stuff in a book...mostly memorabilia, cards, business cards, tags from clothes etc, with old photos, etc. Then I started a new, bigger book in a hard=backed book for selling rugs, with some beautiful pages and some not so beautiful. So now I'm taking lovely magazine pages and adding them, covering up words and images I don't care for....like you are doing here. Thanks for sharing and I loved your music too.
There is something so joyful, so simple, so wonderful about creating a picture book / glue book. i am so glad you were inspired to get back to the practice!
Jamie thank you for sharing your beautiful picture book. I have been gluing images in books forever. Back in the day when Yahoo had the only groups, I was co-owner of a group called Gluebots. The name says it all! Although I now love to play with mixed media and paints, many days I'm too ill to shlep out all the mess and I often feel overwhelmed by it all. Even on bad days, I can bring my book and box of images and glue stick to the sofa and feel that good feeling of creating something. So simple but so satisfying. Btw, I'm an American but lived and went to school in Toronto as a teenager. Beautiful city but cold!
Hi Terry! Thank you so much for sharing your story and your experience with glue journals! You are so right that they are a blessing when your reserves are down but you still want to create! I was amazed by just how much I enjoyed the process! And how cool that you've lived in Toronto! Yes, it can certainly be incredibly cold though right now we are in a record-breaking heat wave!
Hello Jamie, Thank you for showing me how easy it is to create and use a magazine glue book! I absolutely love your You Tube videos. I am nearly 69 years young and I have secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis and I am wheelchair bound and I have co-ordination problems. I can only do my cutting in bed and I have yet to create any glue book pages. I used to do a lot of collaging when I was more mobile. I only have a basket to put all my materials in, I truly wish I had my own studio but I can only dream. I have made a list of themes for my gluebooks. However it is a huge struggle for me. I rarely get to visit any opportunity shops. I get magazines from my carer’s and my husband. One journal I want to do is devoted to L.M. Montgomery. .. but I have limited access to suitable pictures. I live in New South Wales, Australia. Your videos were a relief to me, as I have seen so many videos of “junk journals” and they are far to frilly for me. I would prefer not to use paint or too much wet medium. I like using gel markers, pens etc, I wish I could do things ‘perfectly’ but I just have to accept my limitations. I love good tips, but being disabled… I cannot always follow them all. I get so much inspiration from collaging videos, I haven’t got to the gluing stage yet. Any tips would be gratefully received. Rosemary Hoy
Rosemary, thank you so much for your lovely comment. It made my day to know you love my videos! I totally understand how sticking with dry mediums makes complete sense. You are doing your cutting, you have baskets for your materials - you're almost there! How about once a day gluing in one picture that has some resonance with the day? Bit by bit you will grow your glue book! PS As a Canadian, I just love that you are inspired by LM Montgomery!
Absolutely beautiful! loved the picture book from beginning to end, I was so caught up in each and every page and the music lovely as well. I have so many beautiful pictures of things I love, and the pictures that are just beautiful I could not toss them out now that I've seen your flip-through I will try to make one for myself without overthinking where the pictures should be placed. LOVE this idea soooo much sooo happy I've kept my beautiful magazine images. Thanks for sharing.💓
@@theschoolofcreativemagic You’re so very welcome, I’ve already started and love each moment when I have time it’s so relaxing, hope to see your creativity again on UTube. So many pictures and little time in a day I still make it happen. TFS again 💜.
Really lovely, and so simple to do...especially for those of us who want to create but are not good at art. I used to cut out pictures from magazines all the time when I was younger, but somehow as I got older and life got busy I stopped doing it. I went to London this summer to visit family and I bought some magazines to flip through, and once I was done I felt the urge to cut some of the images out for my travel journal. It’s something I haven’t done in a long time, and the simple act of cutting out and sticking down images that spoke to me brought me so much joy again! I’m so glad I rediscovered it! Your video was very inspiring and has given me some new ideas (I never would have thought of using a magazine to collage in) 💕
Love your picture book. I have a glue book, but I felt constrained trying to make the images tell a story or in some way more "artistic". I love the way you have put pictures in the book that you love whether or not they "go" together. And what a lovely way to use up all those images we gather but haven't found a purpose. Very inspiring. Thank you!
It's amazing how creating our books reveals to us our artistic sensibilities! Finding a home for all of these images is definitely one of the joys of this process :)
Thank you! It’s a peek into a stranger’s brain, exactly like all art. Fascinating to see what makes another earthling tick. Thanks for the fearless inspiration.
In June 2015, while recovering from an illness, I made one of these "magazine" scrapbooks. I had loads of goodies which I had collected over YEARS, and didn't want it just tossed away when I passed. So, I dug out all of my treasures, some white glue and went crazy...I loved every minute of the creation process, and still do. It's wonderful to see that I was on the right path. Your " book" is simply lovely....4/3/17 All the best!
I have been cutting pictures out of magazines for YEARS!! I have several containers of them and came here looking for ideas on what to do wit them all. Thanks, P.s. your voice is so pleasant to listen to. Very calming.
I watched this just at the right time....i began a glue book a few months ago.enjoyed it at first but now am overthinking so have stopped doing it.You have inspired me to keep going!
I found that each page set had something that caught my heart. I think that I will use the pages in my Summer Journal that are blank (I started late) to fill with some images that catch my hear as the summer goes on. This was very peacefully happy to watch!
Oh my !! I love this video . Your voice is so soothing and your comments. Thank you for helping to inspire my creativity and yes there is magic in art! Thanks again.
Thank you for putting that into clarity for me. This totally helps me on my glue book journal. There doesn't have to be structure for me to be able to enjoy it. Thank you again.
Beautiful Jamie! So beautiful! I absolutely loved getting to see your picture book! Great quote at the end... I was just looking up his books yesterday!
This was such a wonderful soothing video. Reminds me of a book I did when I was in my teens and didn't have any money. I threw that book away eventually and I regret it so. I need to get back to it. Thank you for inspiring me.
Love your picture book thank you for sharing your great talent. I watched video where you taught how to put the magazine together. Looks easy peasy I have been collecting things but I just can’t seem to get it started. Thank you for inspiring me I think the picture/glue book is where I need to start. 👏🏻👍🏻❤️✌🏻
I'm so glad you like it, Connie, and that you're inspired to give it a try. I really want to encourage you to let yourself start. Just glue in one picture today. And another picture tomorrow. Don't worry about getting it 'right'. Let it develop under your fingertips. Each thing you choose will inspire the next choice and the next. Before you know it, you'll be looking at a picture book of delight that you created! I'm cheering you on!
Very, very inspiring, dear Jamie!!!!! I have quite a few Flow magazines which might apply for such a magazine journal. Currently I am working on a Smash Book, a comparable idea as its got the patterned or printed pages already, but next up might be this kind of magazine journals indeed! thank you!! xxx
Hi, Jamie as always you are such a motivator.! You have convinced me to give this type of "journaling" a try. I am going to use Nat Geo History mags for mine as the paper is really nice and well the pictures, what can I say... it Nat Geo. Love your spirit and thanks for sharing!
I loved your "flip through" video. PLEASE do a tutorial video on how you made it! Hearing your tips and tricks would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! 🤗
Thanks, Simona! The beautiful thing with cutting and gluing is that if you don't like how it turns out, you can glue something new on top! I hope you'll throw caution to the wind and give it a go :)
I love it!! It's so big it must have taken awhile to put together. I have glue books but they are small. I just might try a bigger one one day I like yours so much. Going to watch your video on how you put it together. TFS
Thanks, Donna! It did take a surprising amount of time but it was lots of fun and I enjoyed both the process and the result. I hope you have fun with it!
Thank you so much! That makes my day :) As for the pages, I'm obsessed with trying to keep them smooth. Some things I do are: runner tape for big pictures, not skimping on glue stick for smaller ones and rubbing them down repeatedly with love and a linen cloth. I hope that helps!
Your book is amazing...you have some wonderful images!!! I'd love to see a tutorial. I like to see anything having to do with collage, and there is not alot of that here on UA-cam...it's getting better but still lacking alot. Thanks for sharing Jamie...it's beautiful!!!
Absolutely stunning book, thanks for sharing! What are some of the magazines you use, and what is the format for your book? Do you use an already existing journal, or totally create your own? Just love your work!
Thanks so much, Lynne! I made this particular journal out of magazines. I've got a video about how I did it (the link is in the description). I love many of the Stampington & Company magazines - Artful Blogging and Where Women Create, in particular. I love Arabella, a Canadian art magazine. I always love Vogue and just about a variety of home decor mags. I hope that helps!
Thanks, Sandy! Because I used a magazine that I had already devoured for collage and dreamboards, lots of pages were already removed when I started working with it. It definitely makes a difference!
Ok I have to ask, where did you get your rings. I love them all, the fox is awesome, the thumb ring yes, and oh how I love the one with the dangling pieces!!! They were a slight distraction for me ;~). Your Glue Book Inspiration WOW 😯 BEAUTIFUL Thank You so much for sharing. I have so many little things stashed here and there, I’v had no idea when or in what piece I was going to use them...A Glue Book is Born. ;~)
Thank you so much! I'm delighted you like my rings. Most of them are from local shops here in Toronto, though my thumb ring is from a market in Delft and the one with the dangling piece is a traditional Latvian ring that I have had since I was 16-years-old, a very special gift from my grandmother. I hope that you have an amazing time putting together your glue book!! It is the perfect home for those much-loved pictures that have been looking for a place to go!
I'm fussy about smoothness! I use glue stick and then rub the image down with a linen cloth. I like how it feels and also the results of this softer approach. If I have a really big picture, I'll sometimes use glue tape instead. I hope that helps.
LOOOOOOVE your channel! Just barely made it through divorce..... This is so healing for me. Thank you! Your jewelry is striking! Would you tell about its background or interesting stories? Thanks in advance!😊
Thank you so much, Dana. I'm so sorry that you've had such a rough time. Immersing yourself in creativity can be such a balm! All of my rings have stories. The most significant is the one with the tassels. It is a traditional Latvian engagement ring and it was given to me by my grandmother when I was 16 years old :)
I absolutely trust my instincts. The more you do, the more you will find what you love. And if you glue something in and you don't love how it looks, glue over it!
Hi Jamie, love the idea...rescuing some great mags from my recycling bin right now :-). Just one question (sorry if it's already been asked)...if you are gluing in so much content..do you remove pages to reduce the bulk?? Thanks, Annette
I'm so glad, Annette! I have ended up LOVING having magazine journals, especially to use as glue journals, like this. Because I always use magazines that I have already been through for dreamboards and collages, they always seem to already have quite a few pages removed, so I'm all set. You're right this is a good strategy when you're going to be gluing in so much more!
I use "Scotch shipping/packing tape. 1.88 in x 800 in(22.2yd). Using measured strips, I lay one strip at a time where I want it, using the bottom end as an anchor on the cover/page. Then using a smoothing tool or old credit card, I press the tape down, smoothing out wrinkles and air bubbles as I go along. It does take time but it worth the effort.
Oh, I tend to use lots of different magazines - whatever I can get my hands on! Some favourites are Bella Grace, the now defunct Artful Blogging, Vogue, Artella and National Geographic. I hope that helps!
Jamie this was really beautiful. A tutorial would be really great! Do you use a gluestick or matt medium to glue the images. Thanks for sharing! - Radha
HI Radha, thank you so much! Okay, I am definitely putting a tutorial on my list. I use glue stick for almost everything. To avoid paper rippling on full page images, I use one of those adhesive tape runners. As much as I like matte medium, I don't use it for this project. I think one of the things that let's me enjoy working on my picture book is the ease of working with dry materials. I think, for me, having to work with a brush, matte medium and timeliness would get in the way for this particular journal.
Thank you! If you mean my ring with the tassles, it is a traditional Latvian Ring. I first received mine from my Grandmother when I was 16 and have worn it ever since!
Love your video flip Jamie. I would like to know if you used two magazines to make it? Is it also possible to use scrapbook papers? Did you have to tear off pages so the book would not be lump sided? I like all your videos but I watched this one twice already.
Thanks, Clara! I'm so glad you like my videos -and this one in particular! I don't see any reason you couldn't use scrapbook papers. I did use 2 magazines and I did tear out pages. And if it helps, here's a video of how I make a magazine journal ua-cam.com/video/co6WrGgKqOA/v-deo.html Thanks again!
Hi Jamie - Love your work and your style! I'm just starting a picture book - do you always start with some kind of background that fills the page and then overlap other images on top? Also, what about hard edges that come from cutting out rectangular pictures? You're an inspiration!
Thank you so much. I really appreciate that.I don't always start with an overall picture and then move to smaller ones, though I have found myself doing that lately. I do love to have every bit covered with images. It's one reason starting with a magazine for the journal is awesome. I cut out a lot of rectangular pictures. I just make sure that I glue right to the edge and smooth it down firmly with a cloth. I hope that helps!
I use a UHU glue stick. I buy them in bulk, lol! I've tried matte medium but I never like how it impacts the images. (I think I tried it on the cover here and was like, nope!)

I can’t tell you how much I love this book!! ❤️😀
Thank you so much! That means so much to me :)
You've given me loads of ideas. Just what I need
I'm so glad! And thank you for letting me know.
I LOVE YOUR JOURNAL AND THE QUOTES OR POEMS YOU READ. YOU HAVE A SUPER SOOTHING VOICE. BLESSINGS.
Thank you so much, Tina! I'm delighted to hear it :)
This glue book was beautiful!
Thank you so much, Gatina77!
Beautiful Jamie! So beautiful! I absolutely loved getting to see your picture book! Great quote at the end... I was just looking up his books yesterday!
Your picture book is gorgeous ! What an inspiration.
Thank you so much! I hope it inspires you to make one yourself - if you haven't already :)
This was such a wonderful soothing video. Reminds me of a book I did when I was in my teens and didn't have any money. I threw that book away eventually and I regret it so. I need to get back to it. Thank you for inspiring me.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you liked it - and I am especially glad if it inspires you to make one! I hope it heals that letting go.
OMG I love your picture book!
Thank you! I had so much fun making it!
Great project, great artist!
Congratulations!
Thank you so much!
Very, very inspiring, dear Jamie!!!!! I have quite a few Flow magazines which might apply for such a magazine journal. Currently I am working on a Smash Book, a comparable idea as its got the patterned or printed pages already, but next up might be this kind of magazine journals indeed! thank you!! xxx
Thank you so much! I hope you have fun if you give it a try :)
Seeing your glue journal totally inspires me to create my own. Thank you for sharing your creativity with all of us.
I'm so glad! This has been one of my favourite new pastimes! Enjoy :)
Just found this! Yummy! I'm going to work in one I had started 2 years ago. I love your inspiration! Thank you for sharing
I wanted to add I'm gessoing pages and painting in it too!
WTG for getting back to it. I am cheering you on!
Hi, Jamie as always you are such a motivator.! You have convinced me to give this type of "journaling" a try. I am going to use Nat Geo History mags for mine as the paper is really nice and well the pictures, what can I say... it Nat Geo. Love your spirit and thanks for sharing!
That's awesome, Chlofene! Honestly, I find this practice so relaxing and surprisingly fulfilling. I hope you give it a true - and love it!
I loved your "flip through" video. PLEASE do a tutorial video on how you made it! Hearing your tips and tricks would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! 🤗
That's a lovely idea. Thank you for the suggestion!
Jaime thank you so much for sharing! Truly loved it. I have to learn to let go of any inhibitions when trying to cut and glue.
Thanks, Simona! The beautiful thing with cutting and gluing is that if you don't like how it turns out, you can glue something new on top! I hope you'll throw caution to the wind and give it a go :)
Just loved this flip through and inspired to do picture book. 🌸
I'm so glad! Have fun :)
I absolutely love love love your glue book!! thank you so much for sharing!!
Thanks so much! I so appreciate that :)
This is so inspiring. Thank you for sharing your artistic world with us.
Thank you so much. That means a lot to me!
I have just found you and love what you did. I have 2 boxes of pictures I have cut out and now I know what to do with them. Thank you.
How wonderful!! I am so glad that we've connected, Joanne!
I get so many ideals every time I come back to this page.....How did you keep the bubbles out and your pages so smooth.....
Thank you so much! That makes my day :) As for the pages, I'm obsessed with trying to keep them smooth. Some things I do are: runner tape for big pictures, not skimping on glue stick for smaller ones and rubbing them down repeatedly with love and a linen cloth. I hope that helps!
That is so beautiful!!!
Thank you so much
Thank you! I'm new at crafting and this really helped me with where I need to start. 🌼
How wonderful!! I am delighted to hear it.
I love the images you used! I would buy that. Love your fox ring where did you buy it?
Thanks, Marsha! I've had that ring for quite some time. I think I got it at Value Village!
Beautiful video. I look forward to incorporating this inspiring idea with my writing life.
Thanks so much, Teri! I'm glad it spoke to you :)
Your book is amazing...you have some wonderful images!!! I'd love to see a tutorial. I like to see anything having to do with collage, and there is not alot of that here on UA-cam...it's getting better but still lacking alot. Thanks for sharing Jamie...it's beautiful!!!
Thanks so much, @angiegal71! That is great inspiration for me to keep sharing. I am so glad you liked my picture book!
Just beautiful! I love it - thanks for sharing - more more more x
Thank you! :)
I love your book! I like to use abstract or background magazine pics and find images in them, then draw them onto the page- I usually do faces.
Thank you! And I love finding images where they are hidden. What a joy! Thank you for sharing :)
Just beautiful Jamie.. can't wait for a tutorial
Thanks so much, Tony. I'm looking forward to making one!
Beautiful! ♡ :) And beautifully done! :) ♡ TFS! :)
Thanks so much, Vicki!
Loved your picture book!
Thanks so much, Irene!
I love this glue book 💞💖
Thanks so much, maggy!
This is very cool!! Ive never seen this before! Thanks!!
I'm so glad you liked it. I hope you have fun making your own!
Beautiful magazine journal!
Thank you so much!
1:18-whenever I have time, i use bluetack to keep images in place in a certain area of the page.
Smart! Thank you for sharing.
Love your picture book, did you take out pages for the bulk, I've seen other videos and they took out pages do you have to do this?
Hello! Very beautiful glue book
Thank you so much!
i love this.....the smoothness of the pages i gather is the result of using glue stick and credit card?????
OMG, gorgeous, beautiful! I love this!
Thanks, Tabata! I'm so glad :)
How do you know if the pictures will work together? This a yummy 😋🤤 book. 😘🐞🤗
Beautiful Flipbook -- Truly !!!
Thank you so much!
Beautiful work and content.
Thank you so much!
This is awesome. Was it originally a magazine?
Yes it was! (I have a video on how to turn magazines into journals. It shows how I did it. ua-cam.com/video/co6WrGgKqOA/v-deo.htmlsi=eswPA0RoDVd3wrrZ)
Love your videos, I just found them today.
Thanks, Lynn! I'm glad we connected :)
Thanks for the tips! I think I'll regive it a try. I always like the effect. Thanks again!
Love your pictures!! What magazines are you using or is it multiple?? ❤
Oh, I tend to use lots of different magazines - whatever I can get my hands on! Some favourites are Bella Grace, the now defunct Artful Blogging, Vogue, Artella and National Geographic. I hope that helps!
I like your decorative tape. Where did you buy it?
I have so many (!) I've been surprised at how many great tapes I've found on Amazon!
I love your picture book so much! Thank you so much for sharing your book with us! I'm feeling so inspired right now.
:)
Thank you! I am so glad. I hope you have fun creating a Glue Book Picture Book too!
Love it! God Bless you and yours...
Thank you, Teresa :)
I enjoyed this so much. I want to do this.
I hope you give it a try. It's so much fun and very relaxing!
Loved your book. I find your voice so relaxing. Btw- where is your ring from? Love that you had the same ring that was on the magazine page.
Thank you! If you mean my ring with the tassles, it is a traditional Latvian Ring. I first received mine from my Grandmother when I was 16 and have worn it ever since!
Jamie Ridler Studios The one that marched the magazine. It looked like a fox or another animal.
Lovely to see your glue book
Thanks so much!
Thank you Jamie. Enjoy your day.
So pretty!! What type of glue do you use?
I use a UHU glue stick. I buy them in bulk, lol! I've tried matte medium but I never like how it impacts the images. (I think I tried it on the cover here and was like, nope!)
Love this. Subscribing for more, for sure! So glad I found you. There is no trash in paper, only treasures~~ :)
Oh, how nice! Thank you :)
Beautiful ✨
Thank you :)
Great picture book!
Thank you!
WONDERFUL!……..thank You for go through your imagination…….
Thank you. I love thinking of it that way :)
Love it 💖
Thank you!
