      @@prathmeshchandwale1506 Well, that's chiefly how Christianity was spread, violent destruction of the Greek/Roman/Egyptian/etc. pantheons, burning of libraries, razing of temples (not to mention stealing any ornaments used to decorate statues of gods and goddesses), rape and murder of priests and priestesses. You said "How did we came to know names of the Lord?", and if the Roman Empire had cracked down on Christianity instead of mostly ignoring it, we wouldn't know the name of this 'lord' you speak of (unless you aren't talking about Christianity, in which case ignore me). Also, if said crack down had happened, we wouldn't have been plunged into such a long dark age, and we'd be way ahead scientifically. Greek philosophers living at that time were sooo close to inventing the scientific method, but instead, we had to wait over a thousand years for Christianity's tyrannical, draconian grip on Europeans to be loosened. What a pity.

    Pluto is only 2% bigger in diameter than Eris, and Eris is much more massive (by about 27%). Also, Ceres was considered a planet when it was first discovered and demoted on similar logic to Pluto. So I don't really get the Pluto should be a planet angle some people have. But I would have saved all of the dwarf planets for another video because Makemake is fun to say.

    Actually, in Greek we call Earth as "Gi" (Γη), that derives from the greek goddess Gaia (Γαία), also since Romans and ancient Greeks had the same gods with different names, we (the Greeks) call the planets by their greek equivalents (Hermes, Aphrodite, Gaia, Ares, Zeus, Cronos, Uranus, Poseidon). Fan fact: we use the same word for the sky and the planet Uranus, we call both of them Ouranos (Ουρανός), since Uranus was the god of the sky.

    Erm...Eris is a dwarf planet, and it's larger than Pluto. In fact, the discovery of a Kupier Belt Object larger than Pluto is one of the reasons astronomers finally got around to redefining "planet" despite the inevitable public backlash. Speaking of which, why is Pluto the only dwarf planet you covered? It's not even the first discovered--that honor goes to Ceres.

      Well after watching it again at 6:25 the person that had the final word on what to call that new planet was a German! Which means that pronunciation of it in the English language wasn't taken into account. But, I feel the immature joke came way later! Frankly Cælus just looks and sounds better, although Hypercronius also sounds cool.
      However, as I came to read later Uranus' name wasn't sent until the 1850's, WAY after astronomers confirmed it to be a planet and not just another star as many thought before, something this video didn't explained.

    Our Moon does have a Roman Mythological name = Luna (Selene in Greek Myth) who was seen as the counterpart of the Sun, Sol (Helias in Greek Myth)
    Also I find interesting, Mercury, Venus and Mars are the children of Jupiter; who himself is the son of Saturn, who is the son of Caelus (Uranus in Greek Myth). Neptune, Pluto, Ceres and Vesta (the last three being dwarf planets) are all children of Saturn thus siblings of Jupiter.

    Too bad you didn't include Pluto's sister, Charon. The lore is that the discoverer wanted to name the satellite "Charon" after his wife, "Charlene", and it was only a coincidence that Charon is also the name of a Greek mythological figure, Charon, the ferryman of the dead, who was closely associated in myth with Hades or Plouton, whom the Romans identified with their god Pluto. Coincidentally, *again*, nearly four decades before Charon's discovery, science fiction author Edmond Hamilton referred to three moons of Pluto named Charon, Styx, and Cerberus in his 1940 novel Calling Captain Future, all of which became names for Pluto's moons. (Cerberus became Kerberos, the Greek version of Cerberus, since the name Cerberus was already taken by an asteroid.)

    Pluto's Moon Charon is Named after the Bargeman of the Dead.
    Styx: The River of the Underworld (Surprisingly William Shatner wanted to name Stix, Vulcan: The Fire god Nephew of Hades and Kerberos, Romulus the legendary founder of Rome)
    Nix is named after Charon's Mother of the same name, The goddess of darkness.
    Kerberos is obviously named after that three-headed hell hound that either guarded the Gates of the Underworld or the Gates of Tartarus, where the Titans were imprisoned by Uranus.
    Lastly Hydra, well the Multi-Headed Dragon of Greek Mythology.

    Very nice video Name Explain! One thing I was curious about is that you didn't mention the backward chronology of the deities as their planets got farther from the Sun. While not all of the planets fit the mold, the ones from Mars-Uranus form a perfect father-son chain which was only broken with the discovery of Neptune. As a big fan of the Hellenistic mythologies, I was sad it wasn't mentioned, but otherwise, this was a great piece!

    TBH I think they should have instead named them after characters of Norse Mythology. Given that the outer planets are considered "ice giants", it would have been fitting for them to have names of the ice giants of the Norse. Pretty Sure Uranus would have been named Loki if that had happened.

      they were not exactly the same "people" (actually mythological figures), but the greek hegemony existed much longer before the roman empire came into power, so a lot of the greek mythos directly inspired/influenced the roman mythos. some of the roman "equivalents" are not 100% equal, especially less famous characters and chronologies.

      The same difference as Spanish and Russian.

    • @carultch
      @carultch 7 років тому +2

      Maybe so, but Spanish and Russian are from two countries on opposite sides of a continent, and the two words sound nothing alike. No one would even guess the two terms have anything to do with each other.
      So seriously, explain what Gaelic is, what Gallic is, and why the two have such similar names, if there is any reason at all.

    • @tw8245
      @tw8245 7 років тому +2

      Well there's a few different reasons behind that, and Gallic IS admittedly closer to Gaelic than Spanish is to Russian, but reading your comment i see you are able to assume that I was merely trying to say "they're different languages", but my 3 week past self was feeling snippy apparently.
      Gallic/Gaulish was a celtic tongue spoken in northern France and southern Belgium Area, and Galician, which is sometimes refered to as gallic, is a Portugese dialect. Now Gaelic is a celtic tongue native to Ireland and Northwestern Britain which has similar linguistic ties to Gaulish, "Gallic", from the gauls who migrated to britain. But heres the thing, while yes they are both celtic languages and yes, they both sort of stem from the same root word, they have become two distinct tongues.
      Source: I speak Welsh, a celtic language, and i cannot understand a WORD of Irish or Scottish Gaelic, they are absolutely nothing alike to me.

    In Greek the Planets of our Solar System have still the original names of the Greek Gods (Hermes, Aphrodite, Ares, Dias, Kronos, Uranos, Poseidon), except for Pluto, which is no more considered a planet plus its name is Latin. Our planet, Earth, in Greek is called Gee (pronounced like Yi), which comes from Gaia, Titan godess of Earth and mother of the Greek Gods.

    • @jimhillaker
      @jimhillaker 7 років тому

      Actually, "Pluto" is merely the Latinization of the Greek Plouton, another name for the God (I'm not sure if "Hades" originally referred to the god or the realm, and were used interchangeably). The Romans called this god Dis, which literally means "wealth" or "treasure".

    Hey mate. Want to point out the word Earth, comes from erda/erde might be true, but may come from Arabic "ard/arda". Its a common usage in Turkish, Ard. It means the planet, also the surface, also the land, and sometimes as a country. For example "ard-u-rum" means "land of rums(romans). Its a city in Anatolia, still has the same name after Romans gone.
