    For whatever reason, I never thought about people around me, here in Dayton, oh, shipping scrap elsewhere. We have one company in particular that has three gigantic shredders, for stuff like cars and trucks, and all kinds of iron, but we have some foundries between here and the coast as well. And they also have rail service, so their prices seem to be about the best around, but I guess my tiny brain didn't put two and 7 together. 10 makes sense now. I appreciate your videos! Somebody stripped my house back before I bought it. 3 days before I signed the paperwork. HUD house, so they just slapped a couple eyebolts on the back door and threw a padlock on it and made me sign some paper saying they wouldn't have to come back in. Stupid m[/^÷& $*

    Some of those Baseboard radiators had Copper at the end and it could have been hacksawed. I was told that Baseboard Radiators use low grade Copper- but scrapyards pay the same. I myself am there when the Scrapyard weighs everything. I want to know if somethings " Dirty Brass" or Low price wire. I had Christmas light wire at the top of a bag of wire and they didn't look thru the bag. Never leave the yard until you compare your list to the Receipt. Any complaints tell the Boss " look at the camera tape/dvd"

    Dave! Wish I was local, I'd almost process that stuff for free just because I find it fun. Been scrapping for 3 years and the yard I go to with nonferrous stuff loves me because everything is separated in buckets and trash cans, nice and neat, usually 1500-2000lbs of NF material at a time. Usually bring them gatorades when its hot too. I highly suggest find a chain parts store to sell those batteries to, I get $10 each store credit (2-3x scrap value). I can bring up to 5 at a time and its great to help maintain my trucks.

    Dave I've never heard of a limit on batteries but in my area the auto parts stores give $10/$15 store credit per battery and they will take a pallet at a time. Maybe something to check into in your area. You could use the credit towards fluids or maintenance items for your trucks/ equipment.

    If you have people who scrap as a side hustle for extra cash, they may be willing to buy your insulated wire that you don’t intend on processing. They will pick it up and process on their own just to make the difference in price. If you give them a bit of a break in what you would get for it, you save time and they make a little cash to supplement income.

    Clean at the scrap yard means pure. No contaminates paint, plastic, screws, bolts, or braided/coated/welded/solder. If it's copper and aluminum ac coil, it's dirty lowest value metal, IE dirty aluminum or even tin shred due to any steel screws or solder. I turned in a copper coil from an old water fountain, 7 lbs of copper, BUT it had solder all over one side that attached it to the cooling line. I knew it was going to be #2 copper, they said it was #2 and explained why, i agreed and they appreciated that i didn't raise a fuss about it. Think of it like bare bright copper, #1 Copper, and #2 copper. The yard i drop off to don't take anything below #2 copper unless it's in bulk or over 50 lbs.

Yes, I know they are pricey to buy new, but it isn't homeowners putting in those big fat breakers, those have to be commercial elec contractors and if it were me, I wouldn't be putting in used stuff from what, 35-40 years ago? The other thing is that those parts change every 20+ years, so if I have a bad breaker in an old panel, sure, as a contractor, if I need to replace one bad breaker and can't get the part any more then you do what you have to do. But heck, you're the one selling them so what do I know?

    Boss man, I think you are not aware of how scrappers treat the yards, and how the mills treat the shippers. A mill will knock down or reject a 40,000 lb load for a small amount of contamination. Then what? You say 'awe shucks', and the yard eats the cost? Do you have any idea how many people fill their cans with sand, and do all kinds of similar things to get more cash from the scrapyard? The yard is NOT in the business of educating you, even though you think you are entitled to a free education from them. Maybe ISRI has an app you can download.The bin you claim they find three out-of grade items, means how much contamination is in that material they can't see? Don't be so high and mighty that they are dishonest, though some are and some scrappers are too. It's a human problem. I think you should buy your own yard, see how you like it, and stop complaining.

    • @removeitprosdemolition
      @removeitprosdemolition  6 місяців тому

      Don't you think of they educated the customers we would all do better. Customers are hard to keep, expensive to get. I have been thinking about buying a scrap yard......

    • @CuriousEarthMan
      @CuriousEarthMan 6 місяців тому

      @@removeitprosdemolition I've been thinking about your response, and the questions get complicated in reality. If you buy your own yard, you will then see both sides for sure.
      In non-competitive and agency situations, the transfer of information freely between the parties facilitates the activity, but nobody makes money out of it, they just help each other, or one party gets paid for consulting and providing information. This fee often offsets time the other party would spend gaining experience. But if exchanged without a fee, this is like a charity. It seems that in any area of life, where any amount of competition is present, more knowledge and experience bring more profit. Therefore, retaining a position of superior knowledge gives someone an advantage. Look at the demo business: if you have customers who have no idea that some of the materials or items are saleable for recycling or for reuse as salvage, they will pay you more for your work than people who know that you recoup money for materials you pull out of the job.(and that clean concrete can be dumped for free by ton after ton for recycling, as another example) To go further, do you tell your demo customers, that if they first called a salvage company which can reuse the materials or pay them a scrap value, and then have you come in after, they would save money, and you would charge them less, since some of the work is already done for you, and because the salvage company is sharing with the customer some of the value of the items they are salvaging ?(not in all cases though is the work less for you) Do you take it upon yourself to educate your customers about this in all cases? If not, why not? Do you deduct the full amount from your bid that you will make from the scrap, and refund them extra if your scrap earnings estimates are only, say, a third of reality?
      In almost all areas you will encounter in life, in competitive situations, people try to retain a superior position in the market through the control of information. This is one reason why hospitals do not publish their prices. Also, as examples, appliance repair people, electricians and plumbers do not disclose everything they are doing so you can check on the prices and ask for reductions and even learn for next time. Doctors, mechanics, lawyers, all withhold information that could benefit you, and seem to feel little to no obligation to educate you beyond a certain minimum required to 'make the sale'. Also, your improved knowledge about maximizing scrap value and another demo company's lack of that knowledge, gives YOU a competitive advantage in the market, since you can maximize revenue above what your less educated competition can. Do you want the scrapyard reaching out to educate your competition without your competition having to make an effort to learn, while you spend time and effort learning, and teaching your employees. which creates benefits for you? You deserve a profit on your investment in improving your knowledge.
      Then there are all kinds of costs a scrapyard incurs for sorting, and resorting materials. Labor, machines, a bigger yard, higher taxes, higher insurance, all these things cost and cost in many many ways. Now, I don't think you should be cheated and lied to! But if they are strictly enforcing the grade requirements, it is hard to fault them for that. You want that in your food, medicine and other areas. And the mills who buy the materials want that too. For example, copper in the steel is very bad and very expensive for them.
      I hope this helps. I'll be sending a short message to say I responded to you, in case this long message gets deleted by UA-cam. By the way, if you buy your own yard, you can set roll-offs or heeled trailers for other demo companies to do first level sorting of metal from C&D and you can sort it at your yard and make the upgrade benefit you get by proper sorting, or share it with them as you wish. Even just upping your volume on materials you already produce will better your price. You also can do hauling, with wheeling dump trailers instead of roll-offs, and sort the materials, pulling the metal, and consolidating the C&D to fewer runs to the landfill or transfer station.There are so many angles, and this is before even going after manufacturers for regular scrap waste they produce. It's a big field, and in FL you can run a carting company, even if you are not one of the 'families' like you have to be up north, and other places.
      BTW If a person does a good job, and charges fairly, I find customers easy to get and to keep. Also, customers flock to suppliers who are like them in temperament, if they can find them. Also, the scrap market is basically global in nature and driven by price and grade. People often hunt for even just a penny or two improvement in price. And that also becomes a trick: some post a higher price than they can afford to spend, to attract the sellers of material, then they try to make it up by knocking down the grade, therefore price, to try to claw it back. But they lure in customers with a posted higher price.

    You have told us your story of rising from the ashes so to speak. I can see how that has carried over to the way you handle your employees. I’ve been privileged to have a boss like that. Keep it up.
    I have also come from a place of financial ruin at the hands of people who knew they were screwing me over and on my recovery have become very frugal. I’m now self employed again for the past 12 years as a interior finisher and on renovations I have made recycling part of the process. If I take something apart that has value I immediately set it apart so as to save time in the process and improve profitability. My helpers don’t see it but the scrap yard obviously knows the value of it. They have some tricks up their sleeves when it comes to profiting unfairly from my efforts. I am not a confrontational person but at 59 years of age I am realizing that when treated the way scrappers do sometimes, there is no shame in confrontation. Totally behind you buddy. Besides who’s going to argue to much with an old guy. The chances the old guy is right are not always worth the risk. Old guys rule.
