Did you remove the belt? Can you reach the bottom bolt with the belt on. Also it’s helpful to mention the bolt size; I think they’re 13mm? Thanks for the video

Great video I have a 2000 xj, I overheated yesterday but my temperature gauge never warned me. It does go up to about 210 degrees, I know gauge worked as it warned me before I changed the water pump, thermostat, and radiator a week ago. Any idea?
Most likely the system was not bled right , so it has an air pocket or there is a leak that you don’t see, maybe internally. I would check by pressure testing it with a coolant pressure tester and see if it holds steady, if the gauge moves fast then you have a leak and if it holds steady then you are good.
handy man thanks so much ! I forgot to mention that I did see coolant spraying from the sides of the radiator cap. I did buy a new radiator cap; can this be a issue as well or am I still dealing with air pocket? Anyway I appreciate you getting back , much appreciated.
Coolant won’t go into my over flow tank and it spits out my cap builds pressure and over beats brand new radiator too.. do I need to change my thermostat?! Thanks
Would a bad thermostat cause the gauge to read as overheating? Engine runs fine most of the time then I got stuck in traffic and gauge went near the red.
That or most likely the cooling fan are most likely suspects while stuck in traffic. Also I would check to see if there is any play in the water pump bearings. Make sure the thermostat is in correctly and also make sure the thermostat stays in place and didn't fall between the mating surfaces of the head and water outlet housing. Also check to see if the water outlet housing is not cracked and is flat on the mating side as well as the head. Thanks for watching. I hope this helps.

For starters thanks. As for the water outlet housing only get a new one if it is cracked, distorted and or will not seal properly but most of the time they can be reused. As for the hoses , yes I would replace them the upper and lower radiator hose. And yes the thermostat has to be lined up a certain way. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
Changed them in all kinds of vehicles. Yank hose let it fly ain't that big of a deal . Barely lose a pint. Makes sense though if you want to keep your concrete pristine.

So my heater doesn't work very good and I live in northern Utah where winters are not nice. It's a 4.0 but I'm not sure if it would be this or the heater core. Any suggestions?
hopefully its the thermostat. and you can flush the heater core (be careful while doing this as to not damage it). but replacing it is NOT something fun to get into.
If you're thermostats stuck open it could be. Have you been getting less than 17 mpg hwy? Where does the temperature gage sit? If the Engine is too cool it doesn't reach peek efficiency.
Good video however I have an 04 grand cherokee and went and bought new thermostat and it didn't come with a new gasket,,,the girl at parts store said just scrape off old one and re use, That totally sounds incorrect . However I went to several other part stores and was told same thing . They don't even carry a gasket for the thermostat

why didn't you just use the RTV ? i have found that using the gasket doesn't always seal properly. they make that 1 minute gasket stuff which seems to work better than the paper gasket
You can do whatever works for you. I use the gasket material seals just fine for me, I have never had a problem with it. Unless of course one of the mating surfaces is warped. I wouldn't soak the belt with it. It drys very quickly. As for on the coolant housing, I wipe as dry as I can. I wouldn't spray it in the cylinders or and internal a fine bearings. No you don't, you can jack up the front of the jeep a bit to be extra sure, but I did mine without draining or jacking the jeep up, might have lost a teaspoon of coolant.
Not easy that bottom bolt is a pain to get to and any ideas why the housing would leak I put the gray sealer on both the block and housing and got it back together added water after letting sealer set and still was leaking any ideas?
It could be one of many things. For example the housing could be cracked or warped, the thermostat could be backwards or fell down as you were tightening the bolts, the mating surfaces were not completely clean , or you applied way to much sealer, the housing could be on crooked. That is just a few common examples. I hope this helps.

I'm scraping it to get it clean and will wipe with brake cleaner, so I should be able to create a nice seal with the housing. Question: my new thermostat doesn't have a sealant with it. I remove the belt because antifreeze is not good for them, it cause premature wear on the belt. It's up to you but I would remove the belt. Not so much the fan tho.
So i changed the thermostat in my 01 jeep grand Cherokee Laredo and it still heats up. I noticed my fan does not come on even when i turn on my ac. Do i replace the fan and clutch too? Or just fan?
+Rich Webb does it have 2 fans? I'm assuming it does and they are both electric. One for the AC and another for the engine. Also when you say clutch, are you talking about the ac clutch. But it sounds like you might have an electrical problem. If you didn't flush your system, it might be a good idea to do that also.

My jeep conked out on me; she leaking radiator fluid and she wont even start half the time. I got it towed to the auto care shop and the diagnostictest was $292.00 The repaiar shop claim I have an oil leak, BUT I know my jeep and it didnt have an oil leak before it got there(to the shop). They also told me its going to cost 1800 to get it repaired. I dont even know if I can't even cover the diagnostic cost(s), yet alone the radiator repairs itself.... I seriously dont know what to do...smh
It will be messy when you pull the hose off and thermostat housing off. Either way antifreeze is gonna come out, it is just neater to drain it from the radiator. Thanks for watching, I hope this helps.
Definitely do NOT clean the area as shown in this video. You dont want to spray what looked like a cup of brake cleaner into your cooling system. And you definitely no NOT want to spray your belt with brake cleaner...
You’ll be fine. I use to work at a jeep dealer and this was common practice. If your belt gets contaminated with coolant also makes it crack and deteriorate. Plus you should flush your cooling system after you do this service. That is what I did and it is the proper way. And yes I replaced the belt. Thanks for watching and commenting.
What are you talking about? I didn’t spray gasket on, I used carb cleaner to clean the mating surfaces off for a nice uniform seal of the gasket. Good try though.😉

No, you can let a little out and jack the front of the vehicle up so all the coolant stays to the back of the engine.

You don't need to empty the entire cooling system to do this.. just pinch off hose and let coolant drain from the engine..

You don’t need to remove the hose(s) to replace the thermostat. However, unclipping the temp sensor is helpful, though also, unnecessary.

No bleeding the system afterwards? Not worried about air pockets in the system after cracking it open? I always bleed it afterwards.
Of course you bleed the system. If you don’t, then it will over heat and possibly destroy the engine. But these systems are very easy to bleed.

If I remember correctly, this one might of not had the rubber gasket around it.
There is no rubber gasket on the 4.0 but there is one on the 4.7.

Many Chrysler parts don't package the gasket with the part, perhaps because Chrysler outsources the manufacturing of their parts.

what's the best stuff to use to clean it by hand? like if I don't have a nail grinder
scraper and sand paper ( not to coarse and not to fine) and then clean with a solvent like brake clean or gum cutter and etc. Thanks for watching.

Mine is a 5.2 liter.
The 5.2 is a V8 and if I remember correctly the water outlet should be on top of the intake manifold towards the front of the engine.

You should lower the fluid level at least to the point where it doesn't gush from the t-state when you crack it open.
