Can anyone spot the mistake I made with the transfers? I only spotted it once I uploaded the video!

Don't be too embarrassed. The Dapol packaging for their 16 ton mineral wagon kit shows the 'Tip End' white stripe at the fixed end. They have never bothered to revise the photograph and the silly error can lead novice builders to follow and make the same mistake in their build.
Even one of Peco's Parkside 'O' gauge kit boxes show a van with half the grab rails missing and no rain strips on the roof !!
As ever we always learn something from each model we make - The more you make the better you get.

Quite happy to show my mistakes, and hopefully this channel will be all about learning the skills. Good to know I'm not alone!

Hi, great instructional video by the way, just a couple of quick questions. I've never built any of these kits so apart from the obvious satisfaction from actually building the kit yourself how do they rate like for like detail wise against ready to run models and also what about weight generally ? ready to run models are usually weighted under the body for stability and smoother running...any thoughts?

Hi Chris, in terms of detail, these kits are at least as good as anything Ready to Run - however, the latest Accurascale wagons are really pushing the envelope for detail - check out my video ua-cam.com/video/Mng1qZicFdw/v-deo.html
You're right that weight can be an issue, especially if you are using tension lock couplings for shunting. I've used both "liquid gravity" (lead ball bearings) as well as weights used for wheel balancing - available in 5g and 10g chunks with an adhesive side. It can be difficult to hide them in an open wagon like this, unless you have a coal load. Some years ago, someone did some tests and came to the conclusion that 25g per axle was the optimum weight - ie 50g for a 4 wheel wagon like this, so you might not need to add much.

You can also get hold of lots of little bits to add a little extra detail to these, better buffers(Lanarkshire models), underframe improvements(bill bedford? Mousa models etc) that provide compensation to the chassis etc, none of them very complicated at all generally involving at best a hole or two to be drilled maybe one or two easy folds of some etch and a bit of clean up and all generally costing only a couple of quid to do per wagon. As usual you can also make savings buying these extra bits in bulk if you speak to the producers at a show and wish to do a decent number of wagons this way.
Parkside used to offer a slight discount on the wagons as well if you spoke kindly to them and arranged to buy a whole train worth at once. 😆

Out of curiosity, what’s the diameter of the wheels on the kit? I ordered some that came in the new plastic box packaging and they had plastic wheels that I want to swap out for metal wheels. I have the LNER 12T box vans and the Southern CCT vans.

I'm surprised that it had plastic wheels - maybe there is a shortage in the latest batch? The wheels should be the 12.6mm size (I've seen them described simply as 12mm).

@@MessingaboutwithModels Thanks for the quick answer. I have some that came in the same plastic bag packaging the one you built in the video came in and they had metal wheels, but as far as I can tell the ones I just got in from hattons have plastic wheels.

Thats disappointing. I try to change all my wheels to metal ones.

One of the hardest parts I have found with Parkside is working out how the sides and end meet with the floor. You just skimmed though this so not very useful. You also put the stripe at the non-opening door end on one side, which would suggest an attempt to rush through the build.
