    The only difference between Kody, and any other middle-aged man who leaves his original family for a younger woman is there are a lot more children suffering abandonment by their father, and seeing their mothers pain.

    I had family that committed blood atonement in 1984, it’s the case that’s covered in Under the Banner of Heaven. The mainstream LDS church had been aware that some of the Lafferty brothers were getting deep into fundamentalist ideas and that they were dangerous and abusive, but they swept that under the rug and continue to do so today. Their SIL is who went and asked for help from her bishop, and her family killed her and her baby for it. The mainstream LDS church continues to say that both the book and the show are heavily fictionalized and they had no idea what the Laffertys were up to

      Blood atonement was a part of the temple ceremony when I started going in the mid 80s. I was uncomfortable with it and happy when it ended. After 41 years in the church I left it 2 years ago.

    Utah LDS weren’t exposed to the past of Mormonism that I was in Texas. We were taught in school about denouncing Polygamy to acquire statehood. We learned it in school, then ask in church and we got an answer like, yes that is true, but, we also didn’t need to practice it anymore. One thing that I never heard was Polygamy called “Celestial” marriage.

    The average age of marriage for women in the early to mid 1800s was generally between about 20-22 years old, depending on the location and year. While girls COULD marry before that, the vast majority were not getting married as young teenagers.
    I'm not sure if it's just Mormon culture or if it's a rule, but all of my LDS friends as teenagers weren't allowed to date until they were 16, and even then, it could only be as a group. At the time, it seemed very restrictive, but now it seems like it was instituted by some person with actual morals to protect the girls from old men trying to take on another wife. Do any of you have any info on this history of this?

    • @kathleenthe7th
      @kathleenthe7th 8 місяців тому +3

      That was standard when I was coming of age. It seems to be less about protecting the youth, and more about delaying dating. Mission first, then dating, then marriage. It perpetuates the system.

    I joined the lds church in the “mission field” so far away from Utah culture. There was a lot of downplaying of the problematic teachings and history in a way that seemed as though people were trying to align their real beliefs as more correct than the actual underlying church teaching presented so as to make it seem as though the church was growing away from problem ideas to something better. I think it was a way to stay in the church and disclaim teachings that most people don’t want to align with if they give it any thought at all. A lot of people I knew had more grace for those that left or hadn’t joined that things would be good in the end for them too. I understand why people try to find reasons to stay. The fear of a loss of community is stronger than the fear of death. If I had run into the problem teachings head on with the level of “that’s just how it is” you have been talking about from Utah culture, I might have not joined or left sooner. It would take a lot to explain but joining the church was a step in my deconstruction from fundamentalist evangelical Christianity. I was still struggling with a need for identity and outside support because of the abuse I grew up in. I got a good deal of support from friends within the church and some of the teachings of the church I grabbed onto gave me the strength to walk away when the time came.

    The law of Sara is not in the Bible. God never told them to take another wife that was Sara’s doubt that caused them to take another wife and disobey God. God still gave Sara and her husband blessings because he had promised but that does not mean that God ever wanted anyone to live polygamy.

    It’s such a lie!!! The average was 19 for women and 21 for men. If kids got married young they were usually 16 and 18. Joseph was a pedophile for his time. Amanda I grew up in the AUB. My father is the current prophet of the AUB aka: The Work. So much of what you were taught and the way you lived was EXACTLY the SAME as the way we lived. I was Mormon for a while and into my teens. I was baptized and went to the temple. My mother lived in fear for years. Unfortunately lost her battle with cancer. Right before her death she said many dark things about Mormonism and about the seal in the temple. She kept crying and saying she gave her kids away (she has 5 children) she said they were forced to go to the temple otherwise they’d take away my father’s job that was via the church. She said during the temple seal many strange things happened. My sister recalls them taking in the car and asking each other “what did we just do”. Fast forward to my mother right before her passing she kept crying saying she gave us away to this church. I told her we are fine mom, we’ve got free will. She kept saying a black entity was telling her to give her kids away again. When I told my mom we are fine and we have free will she kept saying that I did not understand. She said that seal with the church was more powerful. She kept crying and worrying and even said the cross in her hospital room was upside down. It was very eerie that this dark entity kept confusing her and telling her she sold her kids (us). My mother died a horrible death. She kept throwing up blood the last 2 weeks of her life. Ever since my mother seeing dark entities in her room and speaking about the seal and the Mormon church I have felt very icky about the church. She happened to see two other dark entities before that and asked me what the two entities dressed in black were doing in her room, I told her there is no one but me in the room, I am very upset about this seal. Want to know if there is something I could do to break it for my mother sake. That man was telling her she gave her children whom she loved so much. That caused her so much anxiety right before her passing. I hear something about the church and the deal in which they say you would die. A horrible death if you reveal their secrets. I don’t know much about what the deal consist of I was about 8 years old when my parents were sealed via the temple. I just know they felt some type of way after and had a guilty, concerned look about what had just transpired inside the temple,
