- Snow Peak Fire Pit Review, we have used this for just a bit over 2 years now and its time to review this worthy bit of bush camping kit.
Its a Large Snow Peak Fire Pit Carry Kit which I bought from Drifta Camping and 4WD with my own coin.
Its an expensive kit but worth the money as an investment for those who camp often, not worth the money if you only camp 2-3 times a year on short outings.

I've had a Snow Peak fire pit for four years now and it is still as solid and reliable as the day I bought it (although certainly not as shiny now!) Indeed it isn't a cheap bit of kit, but the longevity, compact size and convenience makes it worth while. I don't have the 'fire size' issues that Ronny has, I 'jenga' my logs and have 'learnt' how to manage the fire for either keeping warm or cooking. If there is no fire ban and I have timber to burn I cook on it always.
A few tips: 'jenga' it up hard, get it raging, for a quick burn down for cooking 20-30 min.. add the grill as soon as you can fit it over your logs/fire, to burn off any oil/fat/crap.
The 'ash plate' can also be used as a nice fire-side table if you aren't concerned about ash falling down or burning nice grass. You can use the plate to put your grill on, hot pan/camp oven, food prep, etc
You can (if brave) move the pit even when it's burning. literally pick it up with some gloves and move it
If you arrive somewhere (say a paid camp) and the caretaker says no fires, show them the pit, most of the time it sparks (no pun intended) discussion and they actually want to see it in action (are happy for a fire that isn't on the ground which Ronny covered)
You can raise the fire pit further off the ground with the 'X' plates, and not use the ash plate/guard, or even not use the 'X' and just use the plate flat on the ground. Ash that falls out of the pit is actually quite minimal and easily discarded when cool (as Ronny showed)

We've had our Snow Peak kit for two years and it has been worth every cent. So well made. We had it 3/4 deep with red hot iron bark coals and it did not warp a mm. Every bit of Snow Peak gear we have has been worth it. Especially their cast tent pegs and copper hammer.
Have one of these and they are awesome. Put your fire wherever you want it and I find it excellent to cook on as well.
I have one and it's easily the best bit of kit I own. Have camped with 10 people and we all cooked on it and it kept us warm. It burns efficiently and while it's probably expensive it's extremely high quality.
Whatever that saying is, pay for quality and you'll only pay once.
I have had one for 3 years and use it often,as you said can use where you cant have fires,if you explain the the care taker there will be only a small fire and no ground damage most will let you have a fire and have had afew of them join us to enjoy it over a beer.
Ive had mine for 3 weeks and used it loads. Love how it elevates the fire. Age that even the large could be a bit bigger. Still does the job and I love it
I have the small version because I couldn't swallow the price for the large. I love it! I'm sure I would like the large size, but I'm pretty happy with it nonetheless. I don't tend to camp with groups of people (usually solo or just a couple friends,) and it's worked well for keeping us all warm. I haven't used it in extreme cold, so I can't speak for that, but no issues in spring/fall when nights are cooler. I've found it's extremely important to cut your wood pieces to fit the size of the fire pit, that way, you can really "jenga" stack your wood and it burns much longer and more efficiently. The stove grate for the small version is a little different, and I personally think that I would prefer it over the larger sized ones since it is a one piece grate with the adjustable height legs built into it. I definitely do stack overtop of the edge and like Ronny said, it's nice for holding the wood in place. I've cooked on it a bunch of times (not direct, however,) with a pot or cast iron skillet. Expensive, but quality components (I haven't had any rusting or my grate,) compact, portable, and allows fires where there otherwise might be a ban. I definitely recommend this product.
I have had mine for a couple of years now, great piece of kit. In fact most of snow peak gear is top stuff, albeit pricey.

Been running the Redroads for a while and it works great. Half the cost of the SP but still great quality. I use the riser kit legs and the ash base as a table, fire pit on the ground.
Get some decent thickness wire mesh from a DIY store, cut it into strips, as deep as you like but very slightly shorter than the edge of the pit. Hook 3 of the corners together using the excess mesh where you cut it & use some lock wire to close the final section together when you assemble it & drop it in the pit. This makes a nice deep fire pit/brazier out of any shallow charcoal BBQ & folds flat for storage.

I have seen these with the bench going around the edge (Drifta video). I haven't used one myself but the fact that you can store it flat in a durable canvas pouch and getting those extras (like the bench tray going round the edge of the pit) make it a winner. You really only need a wire brush to clean the mesh occasionally and you could pack that in the canvas pouch too. Not cheap but solves a whole lot of problems. You could set up an Iron framework and have a cast iron cooker suspended above the pit to make a slow cook hearty stew.

Me an me mates are a loose group of canoers an I’ve had mine for about a yr now an find no problem with 12 inch long an 6-8 inch thick, add a torpor for cookin an it’s as good as gold mate. Tough as nails too.
From the poms , this bit of kit should have a world award. We recon it’s that good mate.

Good point about the previous camper's trash in the fire pit. Northeast US here and our state parks are well taken care of meaning little to no ash, and you can always call the park office and maintenance will clean it out. I do like a fire lifted off the ground and moved to a site you like but damn, is that expensive for the full kit. According to their website it is chrome plated steel not stainless =/

Been looking at one of these for our next trip in the large, just for sitting around, use a webber for cooking so wont need all the attachments I see the quality, but did think it was a bit pricey, thanks for the review ronny will keep looking at other options including a diy project

Excellent review. Concur with what's been said. We have only had ours a little while. I hadn't oiled the grill and left it out in dew and there was rust but I am going to persevere and clean it off and oil it as I want to cook on it. I think you also need to have reasonably small pieces of good quality wood to get the best out of it. I have noticed that there is not a lot of heat for warming your toes but thanks for the tip about leaving the bridge on to hold more wood as this will help. I love it and the advantage of buying it through Drifta is you can purchase the canvas bag which is great as the Snow peak bag won't hold all the kit that well.
I first saw these in all your videos and wanted one, finally found them here in Canada and ya no possible way I'm buying it. Not sure how expensive it is in Australia, but its upwards of $440 after taxes. Found it was a bit small too.
I agree with the idea of keeping the fire off the ground etc which is why I wanted one. But with that price no way. Ended up finding the Primus Kamoto at the same store for $125. Bought it and love it. Doesn't fold up as small as the way it folds makes it longer than the snow peak. Can take up to 40cm logs too. Comes with a grill as well so you can cook on it. actually like how the top has grooves as well so if you want you can put skewers on it without the grill portion.
I know the Primus is made in china vs the snow peak being made in japan, but haven't found any problem with quality yet. Time will tell, in the long run how it holds up though.
Ronny that Saffa kid that hangs out with you should be able to show you how to clean the grill, Saffa style.
Including the canvas transport bag, Drifta lists this fire pit for AUD$610 !!! Just to recap, its hard to keep clean, it rusts and includes steel worth approx $50 tops. This product is for people with more money than sense. Everyone else gathers a few rocks to make their own pit. Has worked a charm since the invention of fire...

I never understand why people comment like this on stuff they would never buy, and it's not geared to. It's the same people that claim a Great Wall is as good as a Landcruiser, for 1/5 the price. If you can build the same quality for $50 and sell it for 10X the price, then why aren't you doing it and in business? Seems like a no brainer.
How come I only see guys do this stuff? I find it all fun too.
Leave the grill on the support frame so it stays off the ground and not get dirt on it.

ronny use a wire wheel on a grinder to clean the grill plate i use it in my normal bbq. works mint

The grill net is chromed steal. Stainless grill net is an optional.
Grill plates should always be cleaned with fire and heat after cooking. Then cooled and oiled.

For that price you could get a custom fire pit made up, probly cheaper if you have a friend with a welder
I've got one! Expensive but good!
My only concern is that it doesn't have a lid to close it off at night incase the wind picks up. My current pit although heavy ( and Australian made) has a lid that will snuff out the fire in about 30 seconds so that it has no chance of sparks getting out while as sleep and conserves what ever wood doesn't get burnt. Does the snow peak have this ability, no ever comments on this aspect.
Never seen a lid for these but a sheet metal shop could easily make something for a reasonable price. Companies that make heating and air ducts for instance.
Great review, Ronny. What to do with the ashes/embers if there’s no existing fire pit to empty it into? Can’t just dump ashes onto the ground if ground fires are not allowed. Seems like you’d need to carry a heat-proof bag for spent ash as well.

Very nice pit. sounds like the regs. in various places in the U.S. on fires. especially during drought season.
on a Side note Ronnie, I notice KUMHO tires on some friends Rigs. I recently purchaced some KUMHO at51's. I like them but have not utilized them on anything more than dirt and gravel roads so far. What are your experiences wth KUMHO Tires? Good, Bad, Ugly.

hi mate looks like a good bit of kit but have you tried or heard of the ozpig? as i think they may be a better heating/ cooking option.
mcyesyes I own both. While the pig is a great bit of kit, it's a lot heavier and less portable. The snow peak actually gives off more heat as the pig is a very concentrated heat.
Hey mate, quick question. I've not ever noticed you using a pre filter on your snorkel, are you against them?
I'm usually at the front but I still rate them as something worth using.
The fact that it folds down is a great idea, but the base and the cook grill are really a waste. I got a mini kettle style BBQ from bunnings for $30. Threw the wheels, frame, lid etc away and cut the legs down so it's close to the ground. Simple, efficient, no moving parts, easy to clean.
For an inexpensive alternative to this check out my vids to see what I use. As a river runner I have been using fire pans for many years as they are required on most western rivers to keep the beaches clean. I am certainly happy to see the idea catching among other user groups. Interesting to see so many small companies jumping into the market with overly techy and spendy different types of fire pit/fire pans.

yep only at that caravan park & if the danger is below High. during this trip that was the only place that allowed it.

Nope, fire ban means no fires at all
It's a great product, but it seems overpriced. There are portable fire pits/grills on Amazon for 1/10th the price that also fold flat. Just my $.02 👍
