    Ritchie's touch on the strings is sublime here.

      @@larteonceagain I can understand his point in the context of the way the album flows, but it's the kind of song he became more open to in Mark III and Rainbow.

      @@delorangeade If it only had been in the context of the album it would make more sense. But Ritchie has never played the song live, he refused. Deep Purple had to wait until 1993 to play it live when Ritchie had quit and Joe Satriani filled in during a year for their touring schedule. There's a video of that here on UA-cam. After that when Steve Morse joined they played it often as you also can see on UA-cam. They have continued to play after Simon McBride took over after Morse.

    There's a bit in Keith Richards book about how Charlie Watts was a Jazz drummer, which, he says, kind of makes The Stones a Jazz band.
    John Bonham of Led Zeppelin, a funk/jazz drummer, Bill Ward of Black Sabbath, most definitely a Jazz drummer, Ian Paice of Deep Purple, seems to be a Jazz drummer to me.
    Very few people ever seem to talk about this, but i think it makes a lot of sense. They are all of a generation that grew up listening to the Swing/Big Band/Jazz of the time.
    So is much of the classic 60's and 70's Rock really Jazz? It's an interesting thought!

    • @michaelkarlsson5966

      inspired by jazz, yes! Far from being actual jazz though. But sometimes the boundaries between genres are very fleeting and fuzzy, luckily! 😀

      @@michaelkarlsson5966 good point, it's sometimes so hard to tell the difference. I like how a lot of this sort of stuff can shift genres, sometimes within the same song

    Jon's hammond work gives the song a hymnal feel. Ritchie plays with incredible feeling here. He's the best. One of the original shredders, he can then turn around and play the most beautiful languid passages.

    This is the B side to the Machine Head single and sounds like that studio version. It never appeared on the album despite Paice wanting it on. Blackmore hated it and wouldn't have it on the album and also wouldn't play it live so it was never performed by DP2 on stage. Gillan did it often with his own band and with Garth Rockett and the Moonshiners.

    This Band were and still are ! One the Best Bands of all time !! IMO !! Very soft for "Deep Purple "Brill !!
    Their are some Albums you just simply have to have in your collection , can I mention some that IMO are essential for your soul ! "Rory Galagher ! Irish Tour 74 " > "Wishbone Ash " Argus > " Queen " A Night at the Opera , > "Thin Lizzy " Live and Dangerous , > " David Bowie " The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust , >
    " Live Cream " 1 and 2 > "Kate Bush " The Kick Inside , > "Frampton Comes Alive " > Does any one agree ?

      Have always been well into early Queen ! They played at the Winter Gardens at the bottom of our road in Penzance in 1974,{we used to get any band that was on UK tour}
      I was a bit young to go but watched them help the roadies with some gear ! Freddie had on his chain mail fore arm , despite being quite early eve ! Then not long after i was seeing a lot of live music ! Didnt have far to walk either !great times ! Cheers
