i still remember the first time i heard it, and i get goose bumps everytime im in that moment of nostalgia, even typing this gace me goose bumps. long live love and beautiful music.
Every time I here this (a lot! ) I cry, literally, in so much absolute joyous rapture, its embarrasing....then laugh, because we all know that each of his fingesr has its own brain, and "John" is just the mission commander.
Amazing guitarist and artist, but I have a Maton 12 string that will be 50 years old next month - has had two new tops on it, once due to being stolen by a motorcycle gang and being left on a beach, and the other time due to an accident - but still sounds utterly fantastic! Tommy Emmanuel when he played it said it was one of the best sounding 12-strings he'd ever heard. But if I saw John Butler coming to play it, I'd run five miles before I'd let him near it! He plays Matons too - but he beats the livin' fuckin' bejeezus out of them - but what a guitarist!! Great stuff, John Butler, I love your music!!
+Tristan98 respect. I started learning this song about this time last year. It's like a beautiful and intense form of meditation every time you play it
As a teacher and long time player. Don't let this discourage you. There is a lot going on that make's it sound far more difficult than it is. Let it inspire you to keep playing. The 12 String really enhances how "Full" it sounds and the Capo has a big effect on the pull off's. And anyone with Rhythm can slap the body of the acoustic to create a "Drum" sound. So if this blows your mind, good, it's excellent playing. All I am saying is some of the things that make it seemingly really stand out can be done by most experienced players. I see a lot of comments of discourage after watching this. Don't let it discourage you, let it inspire you to do the same. He isn't an Alien.
It took me 6 months to learn 10 years ago and I'm still improving some parts everytime I play it, I agree with you it's really not impossible but when you're not that experienced some parts can be quite tricky, however every begginer should try to learn ocean at some point, the sooner the better, learning this took me to a whole different level back then, I've learned many more songs in open c after this one, the possibilities always amaze me, anyway all of you guys who feel like you can't do it go ahead and try to learn ocean even though it seems hard, take it one piece at a time and you'll get there.
@@cherylpump3372 It tweeks the sound.. Like John Butler probably used 12 but cause of his ear for music he knew it would sound that bit better... He's a genius man!
This song is so powerful that it makes my 5 week old baby stop crying and stay completely quiet for the whole songs duration. Just as I'm writing this as the song has finished my baby has now started crying again. love you John Butler you are the real deal. x
Listening to this song has to be one of the most comforting things in the world. A place I go to relieve everything and release my spirit. John Butler is more than a guitarist, and he’s more than an artist. This has been my favourite song ever since I’ve first heard it. There’s something about it that I cannot explain, it exceeds the limitations of language. Yet I feel like I understand it deeply inside of me. The power of music
I heard this song for the first time today this morning and I cannot stop listening to it. It makes me cry every time. So heavenly. I thank God I came across this song
Those that can do. Those that can't teach. The rest just criticise. Said it seven years ago. Best version. If it doesn't touch your soul , there's something wrong 🥰
The part at 6:40 will always be my favorite, this song is in my soul, it touches my heart in ways I couldn’t imagine. ---A very close friend of mine whom upon meeting and who’s death altered the course of my life showed me this song one night as we bonded over guitar, forming a friendship that was as deep as the ocean. (Pun is probably intentional) and when I hear this I feel him, our friends and family live on through the love we share and have shared with them, they live through the moments where the melody synchronizes with a memory, where the past meets the present and forms a unique place in time. Each time I hear this I meet my friend again in a new way, with my new ideas and my new hopes, fears and dreams. I miss him, but here he is in these melodies, chords and percussive actions. I hope everyone could experience this, to have an immense love for a person and a shared passion and adoration for music, to have the music bring that person to life inside your heart and mind. One other thing this song gives me can be summed up in the words of Heraclitus when he said “Panta Rhea” Nothing abides, all flows. This song captures that this in such an eloquent and potent way. love you John! And love you all❤️
watching him play is watching his spirit, his soul, pour out in front of you. The way he twitches and aches while he plays, its almost like hes trying to capture all his being and pour it into this piece and its such a struggle to contain this much beauty.
WIth my guitar in hand i was listening to this and playing my guitar(no shit). At some point i just stopped and with my head shaking my eyes closed and thats the beauty of music by such a good musician. Mesmerizing.
Without ever hearing him speak i knew he would be that type of person. Someone with a pretty deep yet basic understanding of this odd thing we call reality
John Butler was like the first guitarist I heard before , and am still struggling to see his concert 🎶 I can’t stop watching his songs , it doesn’t matter where I go „ I must hear ocean „ work , fitness , at home , this song is like „oh waw „ 😮❤
I can't believe all the people that are like "OMG i'm on the camera" *fake smile* *fake kiss*, everything about being superficial. Can't believe those recording this with their phones either. They have the chance to listen to on of the greatest artist alive and this is his best song, the one defining him, the one where he gives himself to the world... ENJOY THE MOMENT FFS !!
I totally agree. These people seem to get your point differently. What tilulu73 is saying is that people should focus on the music like you Benjamin kelley instead of being superficial. I can tell he points this towards the people at 8:42. This is very rude from the audiences part and it sucks to be the artist in this situation.
This is the one that sparked my passion for music. The reason I started travelling just to go busking on every street throughout Europe and the reason I never give up on my music. It brought me out of my shell and slowly released the grip social anxiety had on me back then. It brings me way back, to when UA-cam was in it's infancy, and badly-recorded mobile videos of John busking the streets of Australia were circling. I have yet to experience JBT live, but has remained on top of my bucketlist ever since I fell in love with this imperfect perfection called Ocean. Thank you for this beautiful music.
I saw them play this in Taos, on my oldest brother’s birthday, July 1st, 2007. The closest I ever felt, in my soul, to him, since he died in 1998.. Standing barefoot in the grass at Kit Carson Park looking into the heavens. Thank you JBT
I remember going to a RockIt festival in 1999 when indie was huge. Band after bands went on, huge amps, distortion etc. then John came on. I’d seen him in Fremantle busking before. One man and a guitar had the entire crowd of thousands absolutely vibing heavy. It was a tough act to follow for him and he was amazing!
As I close my eyes I feel the sand between my toes. The gulls are fighting nearby for a French fry. Sand crabs avoid the pipers. The tide rolls in and out. Gentle at first but the with more intensity the sand dollars are washed out to sea. The warm sunshine on my skin bare My soul and being with no care. Free God bless you John
This track is a healing meditation for me. My emotions roll with the waves, you can cry, scream, laugh and just release and by the end, I picture myself as a playful dolphin with nothing to worry about in the world but this beautiful sensation of swimming through the ocean currents. This track brought me back when I got sick and my mind felt like it had a vise on it and all I felt was heavy and angry and foggy, my brain was literally slowly dying. I remember the moment I started to feel again, it was at a concert to raise money for the bush fires in NSW, listening to this track. John truly has an amazing gift and I am so grateful he shares that, and so much of himself, with us.
If i could have any talent on earth it would be to pick strings as smoothly and quickly will hitting every fret perfectly. Truely inspiring and everyday i play guitar i think "one day i will play Ocean"

I don’t know where I got this saying from e, um e
That kind of resonates with me and it goes a little something like this
Y’know , energy, positivity nnegativity, whatever it is,
Is like a fire,
And I often have ah y’know I, a battle with the brain because the brain is kind of one of those great big tools that is, here to serve me and not me to serve it but, a lot of times I am serving my goddamn brain I don’t exactly know why but,
The more you put energy in the good stuff is like a fire y
The more good thoughts you put on it the bigger the fire gets the more bad thoughts you put on it the bigger the bad fire gets,
So I like to, I like to think that, maybe during this next song,
I can be putting some ah, sm, sm good thoughts and some good vibes on the good fire
And, ah, its kind of the only thing that gives me faith in this crazy mixed up world that we live in so,
If you wanna join, the power of thought and intention,
If you believe in that,
Then join me in putting up some good stuff, to all your brothers and sisters in far away lands or close by.
Thank you so much for giving of your time to share this with the people whose native language is not english ! It introduces so well this magnificent masterpiece !
A Tale of Two Wolves
An old Cherokee told his grandson, "My son there is a battle between two wolves inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, jealousy, greed, resentment, inferiority, lies & ego. The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, humility, kindness, empathy & truth." The boy thought about it, and asked, "Grandfather, which wolf wins?" The old man quietly replied, "The one you feed." ~Author Unknown~

But on a positive note, I fucking love this song and will never tire of its perfection.
It was in Monterey California, home of rich entitled teens and young adults. That is where the douchery comes from.
They all looked high tbh.

Beautiful and enchanting performance! Additionally, I LOVE how his guitar is a 12-string except for the ‘G.’ Never seen that before! So cool!🥰👌
