Thank you so much for this video. I have to say, after planning to move to NE Tennessee for the past 10 years, I was almost afraid to watch this video for fear of you bringing up something that I truly couldn’t live with/by. Thankfully, the list provided me with MORE reasons to move instead of less!! 😊 I only have a little over one year left until I get to move to the Tri-City area and trust me when I say that I am literally counting down the days!! Keep your wonderful videos coming, as I look forward to every single one!
This is hilarious, I am exactly at the midpoint of this video and everything they have mentioned as a possible downside so far is some thing that I consider to be a positive. Right now I live in Florida and 7 to 8 months of summer is getting to be…
Word of warning, we moved here from Florida and absolutely love it except for one thing, the severely substandard healthcare. I would recommend being closer to Knoxville to access UT medical center, as I was an ICU nurse in FL and the Tri cities area has some of the worst health care I’ve seen in my adult life. The local hospitals were taken over by a monopoly shortly after we arrived, and it has been all downhill from there.
Just got back from Johnson city Vacation trip, stayed at the Carnegie Hotel, Visited the Shady Valley area all the way down to Loudon, Love the area, best breakfast ever at the Country Diner. We will be looking to move there, once the home prices prices stabilize.
Very interesting video. Shad, I was born, raised and still live in Indiana and an IU grad as well :) My parents are from SWVA and I have family in Kingsport, Johnson City, and Surgoinsville TN. I recall the long drives from the Tri-Cities airport as a kid visiting my grandparents in the 70s. The last time I visited the area was in 2019 and the mountains are beautiful!
People flee blue cities and blue states in the Midwest typically due to several things - the cold weather, high taxes and high cost of living, plus the social disintegration of their city (in the case of large cities, like Chicago), which often can be blamed on a the liberal politics of the place they are fleeing. Then they will move to a wonderful, unspoiled, low tax base, low cost of living area like north East Tennessee, and what do they do? They vote Democratic. I have seen this in my relatives, and it never ceases to amaze me.
I'm a Californian who already owns a home in northeast Tennessee, and we can't wait to get away from California politics! Please don't lump us all into one democratic group because some of us are Republicans.
That is a dumb remark right there! I know plenty up here that came over from Florida & California & they ain't blue in no way shape or form. There's plenty of native blue voters up here to get bothered by which we always overlook and tend to blame them that are moving in. There is liberally nothing here for them type & them blue people who tend to be the much younger generation seem to be moving away to the immoral cities & states
You had me at a slow pace. We are visiting this summer and I can't wait. The more i listen to your podcast, the more i know that this is the area for us . We live in CT, but the area where we live is conservative but alot of the NY snobs are trying to change it , we hope to make it to retirement to get out of CT. I found this video to be very helpful. I enjoyed this fireside chat format and hope to see more like it. The family and I are moving down there next year. Haven’t 100% settled on the tri-cities but it’s very appealing.
Can I ask why you a transplant are inviting people to move here. We are tired of so many people moving here, it’s changing East TN. We know it’s a beautiful area. We like the rural and the farm land but now farms are being sold to make subdivisions for housing. Housing prices are going up and hard to find. Local people are having a hard time finding homes, outside people don’t mind paying higher prices cause that’s what they are used to, so that knocks local out of being able to afford. Of course people are going to be nice, it’s the way we were raised in a simple Christian ways, have good manners and be respectful to people. But if you talk to locals most are unhappy about the rise of people moving here. Like it or not it changes an area. We want East Tennessee to stay the way it is. Please don’t come here and bring the things you’re running from to our communities and try to change things.

We moved to the Bluff City area - roughly 4 miles north of Piney Flats & 11 miles west of Elizabethton) about 7 years ago. Our house is certainly not a mansion, but I would consider it to be a very decent structure - construction of the house being brick and siding. Across the road from us are two houses that are probably worth $600K - $750K. I used to go over and visit with them, visiting with each homeowner maybe a half dozen times. Neither of them have ever taken the time to walk across the road and visit me, so I came to the conclusion that they don't care about me. Maybe they consider me to be a damn Yankee; I don't know. In my extensive travels throughout the area, I have noticed trailers (mobile homes, sorry) situated just about everywhere they can be located. Many look like they should have been scrapped 20 or 30 years ago. I have also noticed that many homeowners (and renters) have all kinds of JUNK sitting around on their properties. I pass by one house on the way to Elizabethton and the front porch has so much junk on it that it looks impossible to get to the front door of the house. The junk is piled up clear to the roof of the porch. Just down the road from me is what I call "the junkyard" - a house on a few acres with 5 or 6 vehicles in various states of disrepair. They have more junk tires laying around than the number of tires that I have purchased during my lifetime (I am 73 years old). Practically the entire yard is filled with junk and I just try to ignore it. My yard is by no means a Men's Garden Club of the Month yard, but I try to keep my yard mowed and the leaves picked up. I guess one just has to take the good with the bad.
