    Analysis is one of the most important parts of the instructional design process.
    Before designing a learning solution, we need to make sure that we know whether we can help solve the problem with a learning intervention. We also need to know as much as we can about our audience and how they operate.
    In this video, we'll explore 5 types of analysis together. By the end of the video, you should have a much better idea of how to approach analysis in your ID project (and you're more than welcome to ask questions in the comments below).

    You nailed it when you said, "instructional designers are not always incentivized to put in the upfront time for analysis". A shift in this thinking is definitely needed. When the analysis is undervalued, the pushback skill is critical for all designers. I'd love to hear how others navigate the conversation.

    I know one time I regretted not doing learner analysis ahead of time. I was regularly training city and county employees across the US. The first time I went into a state setting, the people I were training were retirees who would work for 4 moths during an open session and then go back to being retired. Most walked into training having not touched a PC in 8 moths. It took me 15 minutes to get them all to log in and open chrome.
    We had allotted 75 minutes for the class.

    Great detail! I've always thought of a needs analysis as one great big animal, so I like how you have broken the task into 5 individual types. Love the sound card story! I imagine it will be useful to include questions on an end-of-course survey that assesses if each of these 5 types of analysis were applied successfully.

    • @DevlinPeckYT
      @DevlinPeckYT  2 роки тому

      Thanks Cindy! Yes, needs assessment is one specific type of analysis 😃. And the data from all of these types of analysis will help us with our design.
      Regarding the surveys after the course, that brings us into evaluation territory. That data will also help us refine our design. Check out my UA-cam video on Kirkpatrick’s Levels of Evaluation to learn more about that 😃

    Also imo, a lot of the time, learning experiences are not always based on what ppl are not doing the desired level, it might be, we have a new product being brought into the organization and training will be needed or not needed, whichever the reason is.
    It would be great to hear more about that type of analysis.

    • @DevlinPeckYT
      @DevlinPeckYT  2 роки тому +1

      For sure. In those situations you would identify what desired level you want people to perform at once the product is released. For example, what should people be able to achieve / accomplish with the product? Do they already know how to do that? If not, what will help them do so? Etc. If that isn’t what you’re referring to then let me know.

      You're very welcome! And regarding strategies for after the analysis, it really depends on the type of solution you're designing. If designing a learning experience, check out Gagne's 9 Events as a beginner-friendly way to bring it together. There's a video about it on this channel :)

    Hi Devlin! I'm new to the field and am trying to move ID with a media design background. This video is super helpful, but just to clarify, would you conduct each of these types of analyses, choose one, or a combination of some of these to complete the analysis phase?
    Also, I would love to see a video diving deeper into Needs Assessments and mock assessments 🙋🏽‍♀️

    • @DevlinPeckYT
      @DevlinPeckYT  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Asha! Welcome welcome 😃. In an ideal world, you’d conduct each of these analyses. As you continue designing learning for the same audience, you may not need to conduct a learner analysis or context analyses (since you would presumably already have done these). Evaluation will help as well by letting you know what the areas of improvement are for your learning experiences after the fact.
      That being said, there often is a very abbreviated analysis phase (which mostly consists of the ID or learning consultant talking to the client). I think that as long as you have these concerns in mind and try your best to learn more about the audience you’re serving (and the real problem you’re solving), then you’ll be in good shape 😃

    Devlin, can you give some tips on how to provide feedback after the analysis? Specifically, when you have concluded that the problem can not be solved with training, for example you mentioned inappropriate rewards system. I've seen this where it's incentivized to get the maximum sales, so corners are cut by the salesman. It's that they don't know how to do it, but they are motivated to get the sell at all costs. How do you come back to the organization or department head and tell them that the blame really does lie with them? Thank you in advance!

    • @DevlinPeckYT
      @DevlinPeckYT  2 роки тому +3

      Good question! Perhaps writing up a more formal document that outlines your findings and recommendations? And explain there why training would not be a good fit? I imagine that sometimes, even if you uncover this, you will get told to "just make the training." So navigating that conversation is a whole different project...and the organization's politics will likely come into play.

    Thank you Devlin! How would we approach a company that has proven training to be effective, but it would like to replace in person training with online to save time and money?

    • @DevlinPeckYT
      @DevlinPeckYT  2 роки тому

      Such a good question! I would look at which learning objectives the in-person training is targeting, and then I'd design online activities in line with those learning objectives.We would want to make sure that we're designing experiences where people can practice the skills and achieve the same outcomes as the in-person lessons (and many different ways to do this, but it depends on what the desired outcomes are)
