Holy crap, this was excellent. For those of you on the fence: He has a take on distraction I don't think I've seen on youtube before and definitely one I haven't seen expressed so eloquently, even by a Stoicist, before.
I meditate fairly often. It helps me reflect on my actions and clear my vision/purpose so I can do only things that I truly want. Yet, often when you get to the doing of stuff, you're in a way "lower" state than when you're in deep meditation. Of course, that's your perception of yourself in the given moment. And perception is ALL regardless of time and place. So I often catch myself falling into traps in the doing. The last one I struggled with was putting how much time a certain task would take me. This way I know that I've worked for 3 hours today and started experiencing fatigue in my concentration and willingness to do anything productive after that. But that felt unnatural. If I'm doing what I truly want, I know for a fact that I can fall into the doing for 12 hours straight and forget the perception of time during the process. Which led me to believe that something in the process is OFF. I really thought it helps me focus on a certain task knowing how much time it would take, but it did exactly the opposite. When I explored it in meditation recently, I got to the conclusion that I have judgment over things that feel difficult to do. That's why my ego creates prisons that trick my mind at the moment that something is easy/achievable. Yet, that I found to be even a bigger trap for me. One that leads to constant procrastination. We people often don't like things that are hard. Yet, if that's the case, we automatically don't like things that are easy as well. We naturally create expectations for things we're about to do. They are either hard -- so we put them aside for a time we feel more "in the zone" so it doesn't feel that hard. Or they are perceived as too easy. This again leads to procrastination so a deadline can make it a little more exciting to do. For me, I found that I am very good at achieving my goals. When I create a financial goal, I break it down into steps. And once that's done, I am 100% certain that these things will happen one way or the other over time. Leading to always achieving the goals. Yet, exactly because I perceive it as certain and easy/achievable, I create unnecessary tension in the process so they feel harder than they are actually. After all, the common belief many of us share is that you gotta work for your bread. And if you're used to making $30/h, jumping to an activity that makes $300/h starts to feel a little too easy to be true. Do I really deserve this? Am I not making a mistake? ...and other similar thoughts start to appear. This ultimately leads to procrastination and tension so you spend 10 hours of thinking on a job that's 1 hour of doing. Making it $30/h again. So in my exploration, I've found that after you know your vision and know that what you're doing is helping your purpose, you have to watch your mind closely before and during the doing process. If you take 10 minutes to clear all your expectations about the things you're about to do (how easy/hard they are, how much time they would take, what they will stop you from, and what they will move you to)... You'll find a lot more purpose in the process of doing rather than the end vision/goal you have for the day/week/month. Removing all expectations is the path to ultimate Flow or as in the video "Focus". It's something that keeps you in a highly productive state that doesn't feel detrimental to your mind/body/spirit. But of course, even when you start like that, in the process of doing, your mind will naturally create more expectations and unnecessary resistance. Which if you learn to notice quickly, you would stop the doing process for a couple seconds/minutes and see where the problem is coming from deep within you. Sometimes, this may lead to stopping the entire work and reflecting even more deeply on whether what you're doing is actually meaningful/purposeful, and most times, it would clear the small expectation you created a couple minutes back and bring you back into the flow. This is what I'm working to build into my life at the moment. I'm sure there're other things I might not be aware of in this big picture of life and ultimate flow/focus. And I'll be more than glad to chat with someone that has a similar vision on the process and potentially has gone through similar attempts to stay in the Flow of life. But as a conclusion, the biggest breakthrough I got from all that text is that things that are easy to achieve become the hardest to do. This opened a lot f mental doors for me. And I'm sure that if anyone reflects on what he's doing, he'll find that sometimes he unconsciously makes things that are easy harder, so they can feel a greater emotional benefit of the achieving. Yet after some achieving in your life, you start to see to real purpose in achieving things. They come and go. But if you fall in love with process: 1. You'll be in a way higher state throughout your life. 2. You would achieve waaay more things without having your mind constantly on what you HAVE TO achieve.
Well said, thank you for sharing your experiences - there’s a lot to consider here. I’m realized I have let my expectations fall out of balance with my sincerity. Balance does not imply equality. For those who struggle with finding what they truly want but still want good focus, instead of having your actions be driven by your desires/wants, focus on the action/process of said goal itself. Since the goal you have is not a motivator of action for you, focus entirely on the action/process itself; this will allow you to (ideally) be driven to do said action/process until completion. This is just one technique/method to be driven and take action with good focus. You focus on the action/process, embodying it. Then you do said action, until completion. But the best effortless focus for one's goals can only be had by knowing what you truly want, as those wants drive action, with the focus being a given.

I love freedom of thoughts emphasis on self discovery and finding your own path like his video on procrastination. But a common theme in his videos is that you can’t, in the long term, force yourself to do things, like in his self discipline video. But truth you can’t 100% of the time do what you want to and even to get to the point where you can, you have to do things you don’t want to. I think it’s beneficial to take into account doing the “should” things you should do to obtain the “want to” things you want to do. So self discipline and focus is needed regardless
Thank you for all your videos and your thoughts. They are inspirational, fun to watch and give me a new perspectives on life. I completely agree with the idea that when you do what you truly want to do focus comes naturally, followed by success, inner peace and other good things. This is a reoccurring theme in a lot of your videos. But there are two things that I didn't really hear you talk about in this regard (yet): 1. It works the other way around too.. When you put in time/energy/attention into something that is not very appealing at first it becomes deep, interesting and exciting, which in turn can help retain your focus. So sometimes the Nickie's approach of "Just do it" can be very helpful in achieving focus. 2. Even when I know what I truly want I am (currently) still divided, I have different needs, and desires that a lot of the time conflict with my higher purpose. And in these times I need to have enough determination, and will to overcome them which in my experience are developed through constant training, discipline, active resistance to these urges, building new strategies, reformulating the goals and in short - a lot of work. It seems from some of your videos that you don't really agree with some of these approaches, can you please elaborate on these ideas and tell me what your stance is in relation to them? And how do you overcome these hardships/distractions/roadblocks when they inevitably appear on you journey? Thank you very much. I really appreciate everything you do, and it seems that you really live by these philosophies mainly in that you have found your true calling and you're doing your best to follow it.
I had an intriguing thought while watching this that I thought might warrant its own video: What if the things you want most out of life naturally conflict with each other or prevent the simultaneous and continued pursuit of said goals? What is the process by which an individual can truly ascertain the priority of their priorities?
I just realized, part of the issues I am feeling like this, is that I am in conflict with myself. I am the guy with app blockers, todos, calendars, plans, habbit trackers and much more. I missed out on life because of these. Now it is 2Am, but after sleep, it would be better to think why I am doing masters, do I wamt it, instead of another failing pomodoro sessions.
I agree living insincerely can lead to being distracted, but being distracted does not mean people are living insincerely. Learning disabilities like ADD, multiple passions, fatigue and external influences create distractions to anyone. Rather than fight between "sincerity” of desires and “imprisonment" of discipline, transition between “following your bliss” and let the consequences raise you to higher understanding. But also live in periods of mastering your, removing all distractions (including “sincere desires to stop mastering”) and afterwards sincerely evaluate if you still love it.
Not quite sure I understand what you’re saying. I think we’re talking past one another and using our words differently, but thank you for your perspective 🙏🏼
Your videos really are a class apart. So unlike the other toxic self help videos that focus on superficial quick fixes. While they may help temporarily, they hardly address the problem, which leads to relapses. If you have to create systems to avoid distractions, you’re just adding to the list. Figure out the why and go from there.✌🏽
Ive always thought this, but what if feeling like you should do something really feels like you genuinely want to do it? And/or there’s another equally “wanted” decision that you can’t distinguish between? Do you just make the decision to do neither out of indecision? I feel like I’ve gotten stuck in this loop of trying to do what I truly want to, and since it’s forced, it’s harder than it seems to get out of. Like, I WOULD do what I want to do, but I don’t exactly know what I want to do out of anxiety (???) and it’s completely masked it. It’s like telling you NOT to think about a particular thing. I’ve mentioned it, so now it’s hard to get out of your head.
My Point of view is, you can start from end to top then top to end, with said that, My goal is to achieve wisdom then am already on my goal, have to work to achieve it. Goals are always with you only process is pending. Once you done with process you ultimately pick another goal.
Being in the state of conflict of what to do? and what not to do? keeps you distracted... solution to this would be to do what your mind wants to do, it will give you a sense of worthwhile and will make you wiser since your mind is diversifying and getting more experience and hence result in you being more focused towards things. Don't be trapped in cage. Humans have a curious mind you must learn to embrace it rather than making it systematic. Eventually You will find something that you will spend most of your life Doing. that's what will be, what you want to work and earn from.
assuming we, as human being, don't have such free will is a correct statement (according to a couple of neuroscientists). For me, this means there is always a hidden reason behind each human's action. There are always one or another force/cause to one's action whether by the surrounding environment or not. If so, then I wonder how is it true that anyone can have a sincere life based on the point this video states.
So if you don't do the things you want to do, you'll keep thinking about doing them while you're doing something else, but if you decide to do the things you want to do, you might end up realizing they weren't the things you wanted to do (like with the example of sleeping and eating all day long). But if you eventually end up doing the things you really want to do, you'll do them much better than anything else.
but what about discipline? also sometimes we need to work to finally do things we want. for eg someone likes to solve questions but doesnt want to strengthen fundamentals. then what should one do?
thats why in my pov this message only applies to a certain degree bc we dont live in a perfect world. if you want to pursue smth there will ALWAYS be smth which you may deprioritize but you know its important to get to your goal. dont embrace the message fully but to a certain degree, dont pick a passion you feel forced to do but one which you enjoy and have the least amount of "not so pleasurable" baggage that comes with it
The concept of discipline imo is misleading. Like in this video & other of his, he states essentially: if you do what you actually want & value, you will have unlimited discipline, focus, drive/"motivation"/action. You are being who you actually are by following your actual wants/values. The dilemma you stated, as well as any others one can come up with, are not true dilemmas imo; they come from a lack of insight of one's actual wants/values. If in your example one truly wants to solve problems, one will by necessity "strengthen fundamentals" (whatever that means) if it is necessary for said want/value. If one does not, you either have a false belief or value, flawed understanding or reasoning, or are going about achieving your values incorrectly.

Me discovering this channel accidently is the best things ever did to me...
Eye opening!
Thank you for this
God bless you! This touched me deeply!
Incredible video! :)
this is very inspiring and touches me right to the heart, thank you for your effort getting this out to people.
I get goosebumps watching this video
I had an intriguing thought while watching this that I thought might warrant its own video:
What if the things you want most out of life naturally conflict with each other or prevent the simultaneous and continued pursuit of said goals? What is the process by which an individual can truly ascertain the priority of their priorities?
Wow, thought provoking
I think a specific example for your first question would be great for clear illustration.
Thank you for this video. It helps me in the moment of life I'm in.
Thank you!
Thank you so much you're teaching us a lot and we're very grateful!
Thanks A lot For Dis Visual 💯
Life changing 👏👏
@@FreedominThought I simplified what I wrote. Hopefully it’s clearer
Your videos really are a class apart. So unlike the other toxic self help videos that focus on superficial quick fixes. While they may help temporarily, they hardly address the problem, which leads to relapses.
If you have to create systems to avoid distractions, you’re just adding to the list. Figure out the why and go from there.✌🏽
Wow this is like a direct punch into my face
Another great job!
Wow, my mind is blown
Thank you for this. I've been lost for a while now and this was perfectly timed. I'm just blown away
😲😲Thank you, for this insightful video.👌🏽👌🏽
I gonna watch this later thanks
You are brilliant!
Great videos

thank you
This one was dank af
Being in the state of conflict of what to do? and what not to do? keeps you distracted... solution to this would be to do what your mind wants to do, it will give you a sense of worthwhile and will make you wiser since your mind is diversifying and getting more experience and hence result in you being more focused towards things. Don't be trapped in cage.
Humans have a curious mind you must learn to embrace it rather than making it systematic.
Eventually You will find something that you will spend most of your life Doing. that's what will be, what you want to work and earn from.
I am interested to learn cooking. It was my childhood interest that stopped. Now I'd like to cook.
I love this

Nice video ♥️
Beautiful
assuming we, as human being, don't have such free will is a correct statement (according to a couple of neuroscientists). For me, this means there is always a hidden reason behind each human's action. There are always one or another force/cause to one's action whether by the surrounding environment or not. If so, then I wonder how is it true that anyone can have a sincere life based on the point this video states.
Enlightening
I left my online class and came here to know how to focus in class.
Great video...👌🏻👍🏻
I don’t have enough knowledge to understand it completely but I’ll try
Thx for video
Whatever you do, do that.
Real hard work is following your passion at your own pace, not being bullied at toxic workplaces. Fricken lies
Brilliant!
Thanks.
This reminds me of a combination of Wu Wei and Bukowskis 'Don't Try'.
When it's right it's not difficult.
While focusing on your video, I got distracted by the melody at 6:30 please tell me the name!!
Med student here and thank you 😀😊
Funny how i can relate, could have had a chat with M.A without hesitation
but what about discipline?
also sometimes we need to work to finally do things we want.
for eg someone likes to solve questions but doesnt want to strengthen fundamentals.
then what should one do?
thats why in my pov this message only applies to a certain degree bc we dont live in a perfect world. if you want to pursue smth there will ALWAYS be smth which you may deprioritize but you know its important to get to your goal. dont embrace the message fully but to a certain degree, dont pick a passion you feel forced to do but one which you enjoy and have the least amount of "not so pleasurable" baggage that comes with it
The concept of discipline imo is misleading.
@@_inetuser may be like zen masters monk only showed the way to achieve it leaving the part of understanding the crux to the listener. There might be a deeper meaning to this like when you allow yourself to those distractions you remove the forcing element basically the force that u apply to push away things you are distracted to and force to do the work u currently dont want to do.
but we can remove that forcing element by other ways as well....
maybe it is not a binary choice
you can find ways like way which you see something ....perspective is a strong enough force that doesnt require concious effort.
thanks for the reply😇
@@User24x u mean that actual want can provide us with the internal drive to work for something that necessary for our aim even though we hate is.
sincere life comes from being true to oneself
@@User24x i dont think thats 100p true, becuase heres a concrete example: i want to learn how to integrate machine learning into existing systems. ai is a field i am really interested and passionate about... but to reach my goal i also need a good understanding of the underlying math, i like math but for me its more of a tool that im using to get to my goal. i can say that i have more passion to learn ml concepts than to learn math concepts but they are complementary to eachother so i pursue both. give me a practical example where theres no unwanted task included, even if you pursue "dream" careers like influencer (ik not our dream career, i hope) you have to deal with stuff you dont want to
Off to work now, ciao!
these words are like inscriptions on rock that tells the path but rigid in itself
Plz tell music name in background plz its so beautiful
So the reason I have such a hard time writing a song and distracted is because I don’t think it’s worthwhile, but I always want to? Should I shift gears?
@Isaiah Byrd your right actually! I went on vacation and one just popped out I also think it was my process and I’ve found a much better one that works for me I think the process is important for keeping attention hopefully this helps some passing reader
