      I hated it at first until a friend and I were watching an episode out of boredom and caught the one with the rapping pumpkin monster and it finally clicked with us what kind of a show it was. We were taking it seriously instead of a comedy/action show. After that we got way more enjoyment out of it and would have debates about how rich Angel Grove must be to repair their city and remove debris every week after giant monster battles and what the off screen casualty rate must be? You know there had to have been at least one janitor in one of those buildings running like Hell down the stairs to get out before MegaZord was body slammed right through it.

    I owned the Game Gear games as a kid and absolutely loved them. I would play them as well as Jurassic Park and wonder why the Genesis and SNES versions sucked so bad in comparison. Add in the awesomeness that was Sonic Triple Trouble, Sonic Chaos, Vampire Master of Darkness, Crystal Warriors and Shining Force The Sword of Hajya and I was a die hard Game Gear fan. I still think the Game Gear was vastly underrated as a handheld console.

      @@Windavinci Depends on who's offering. 😏
      No, I'm just saying I don't think it was as hidden as SLX thought it was; I think he was experiencing tunnel vision because he was getting bored and just trying to slog through to the end of the level w/o really embracing the level. Tbf, the game begins to feel a little too repetitive by that point (a level or two earlier actually, for me at least), so it's understandable to ‘tune out’ the game a bit. Personally, that monotony typically makes me appreciate every little detail more intently, but I do agree the game sorely lacks in enemy variety and gameplay mix-up.

      It baffles me Sega didn't port them to the Sega Master System for the UK and Europe. My brothers would have played these games for hours if that's the case, but then again these were released so late that it probably wouldn't have been profitable.

    • @WeskerSega
      @WeskerSega 8 місяців тому

      @@ultrairrelevantnobody1862 That's the reason. The first MMPR game is a late 1994 release. There still were a handful of late 1994/early 1995 releases for the Master System in Europe, but Sega (and some surviving third parties like Infogrames or Virgin) aimed to another demographics with releases like Astérix and the Great Rescue, Chese Cat-astrophe starring Speedy Gonzalez, Daffy Duck in Hollywood, Sonic Spinball, The Lion King and The Smurfs. Maybe Sega considered a possible conversion of MMPR a little too American centered for bothering for a release of that that would have mostly served Europe (and Brazil). MMPR The Movie is out of the question because that's a late 1995 release. From that point on, it was TecToy which could have gotten that for Brazilian release, but apparently it didn't consider it.

  • @DeludedOne
    @DeludedOne 2 роки тому +6

    The Genesis MMPR fighting game actually has a few interesting bits, like a deflection move that can deflect projectiles back at your opponent. You can also play as the Evil Green Ranger , who is different from the standard Green Ranger (he has the evil sword and the moves that go with it) and can also fight against the giant enemies like the zords as a gigantic form of himself (a throwback to the TV series where the evil green ranger did just that). There's a way to unlock him in the versus mode, I can't quite remember how though.
    The super moves are also interesting, but the most broken is the Dragonzord's, it's basically an infinite combo, get just one hit in with that and the enemy is basically helpless, you can combo it to death simply by mashing buttons. The other super moves are powerful but not as broken. All of them can, when not blocked and used correctly, reduce the opposing life bar by half instantly.

    • @VOAN
      @VOAN 2 роки тому +1

      Though it's an interesting game, it just fall flat in that it didn't polish it enough to be fun or playable. The sprites are too tiny, moves are limited, you could only punch and kick, the third button didn't get use for anything and you didn't even get to fight the Evil Green Ranger in zord size in Story Mode despite him being in the game. Also even though Scorpina appear in most of the cutscene, she was not a playable character in the game. The game also had no corners in those stages so backtracking had no limit which makes the game feel unstable at times.

    Of all the games I owned as a kid, I wasn't expecting the 1st GG version of Power Rangers to be mentioned today, it's the most 90s thing I can imagine. I was pleased to see it get a fair shake here. Making it a 1-on-1 helped with the GG's limited sprite capabilities, and the small viewport means they come out a good size. Sure there's a fair bit of sprite flicker but on the GG's smeary screen that's less of a sin than the footage here would make out.
    I don't know if the MD version had this, but the GG version's VS Mode had logic of a sort, no mirror matches, and no 'big only' (e.g. Zords) versus 'small only' (e.g. Rangers). There was an unlockable 'Dream Mode' cheat that waived this though.

    But I always wondered... why has there NEVER been a Power Rangers RPG? As a huge fan of RPGs, and Power Rangers, I would have eaten that shit right up.
    The team oriented action of the show would have lent itself well to the genre. Instead, we got a racing game. Because when you think of Power Rangers, you think racing. Obviously.

  • @VOAN

    The unique thing about the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Sega Genesis game is that it plays very true to the show. What does that mean? It means even though in versus mode there are 12 selectable characters not all characters could be pick against one another. The rule of the show apply therefore if you pick any one of the six ranger, your opponent can't pick any one of the zord (Cyclopsis included). The same apply if you pick one of the zord then your opponent can't pick any of the ranger that is unless it's the Evil Green Ranger which he could fight both the rangers and the zords (just like the show). Also there's no mirror match so both players can't pick the same ranger, monster or zord, even the normal Green Ranger can't fight against the Evil Green Ranger. The only disappointment I had with that game though is that if any one pick one of the ranger then you always get to play in the Rangers stage which is boring as there's only one, you will only get to play in the other five stages if both players choose the monster, the zords, or the Evil Green Ranger.

There's only 2 or 3 main bad guys in the series them feeding you the same enemies is just them being true to the source material. For anyone who knows the IP the movie game is great.

      It makes perfect sense in the context of enjoying a video game. I don't care what the show does on TV. Playing a video game for 45 minutes fighting the same single enemy is extremely boring. The developers could have done any number of things to combat the realities of the show. There could have been color variants of the puddy patrol with different move sets, animations, and weapons. You get none of that. You get ONE FREAKING ENEMY with no changes for an entire level.

    As an excited MMPR fan who was a kid back when these came out... let me assure you, we could tell a good game from a bad one. I played the (original) Game Gear one first, and it quickly became my favorite game I owned on the console. When I rented the Genesis version a bit later, I got bored with it after about 5 minutes and decided I had wasted my money for that weekend. To this day, I'd still hold up the Game Gear version as one of the very best and funnest games on the system. It's so cinematic, intense, and really highlights the dramatic moments that made the show feel so cool back then.

    Growing up I caught reruns of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers on Saturday mornings. I like many other 90's/late 90's kids loved Power Rangers. I think the toys Bandai made were the coolest (at that time)! Now as for the video games, I don't remember playing any as a kid, but now being a 23 y/o video game collector I do own Power Rangers on Sega Genesis. The very first Power Rangers game you mentioned in the video. Like you said, it's an ok fighting game at best. Not great, but not horrible either. I didn't know the Power Rangers Movie game was a side scrolling beat 'em up! I also didn't know that the Game Gear ports of both games are that good. Now that I know this, I'll be on the look out for both Game Gears games, and the SNES version of Power Rangers the Movie the game. Thanks for schooling me, and I loved the video!

    The Megadrive/Genesis at first wasn't going to include the Rangers and would focus in the boss battles so it had more enemy characters, however the changed their minds some months before the release and eliminated some monster characters to include the Rangers. Because they included in a very short amount of time, all the Rangers have the same sprite with the same basic moves, with their only diferences being the colors, the voices and the special attacks.
    The Game Gear games are among the best fighting games ever released in 8 bit consoles, only the Takara conversions from Neo Geo can compete with them, something I loved about them was that each Ranger had his/her own sprite with their own basic moves and how easy it was to play, all special attacks were done with a quarter and one or both buttons. There was also a special VS mode that you unlocked when you beat the game that allowed you to fight without limitations, so you could see the Rangers fighting the Zords. It also had 16 characters, a lot for that time, specially for a 8 bit game.

    Well, I have to disagree with you on MMPR: The movie on Genesis. I LOVE that game! Played it many, many, many times! One of the best beat 'em up of its era along with TMNT: The Hyperstone heist and Street of rage III. Yes, the foot soldiers are the same in a level, but it's normal, it follow the storyline of that level (Putties in the "remember when" levels and Ooze monsters in the "now" level). Also, compared to MMPR: The movie on SNES, it stick closer to the story of the movie.
    The Game Gears games seems nice, but maybe not enough to have been ported to Genesis. You're also right about MMPR on Genesis, it's slow and clunky, but still fun to play.

    I am of a similar age, and Power Rangers was one I was a bit too old to really care about. One thing said during the first game here stuck with me, though, and that's that its simplicity makes it a good game to play with the kids.
    I have always had a similar mindset that simplicity=accessibility, which means more fun for young kids. What has started me re-thinking that idea is watching what is happening with my sons. My 7 year old loves games, and is careful enough that I turn him loose with one of our Switch consoles, and that's where things got interesting.
    When he was 5 and first had access to playing Switch on his own, I assumed he'd just be playing the Mario games I set him up with. However, when I'd go check on him, I'd sit with him and look at what he's playing, and nearly every time, he'd turned off Mario and gone into the SNES games. Here he was, 5 years old, and I see he's about 3 stages in on Demons's Crest. He looked at me and asked how to get past the boss in that area. He was doing all of the hovering, switching forms, etc. on his own. Left to his own devices, he chose Demon's Crest, not a kiddie game.
    Today, he's 7. He and my 3 year old recently started new characters on Dragon's Crown, and we've been playing through it together. He does his own skill upgrades, and my 3 year old, while he needs help with menus, makes real contributions, like yesterday after the pinewood derby when we beat the Wraith, he guarded the light source statues while my 7 year old and I took down the Wraith. Later on, we went downstairs to the basement to play since one of my friends was coming to visit (and my oldest usually plays a game with him before bed when one of my friends visits), and my son asks if he can play Gunstar Heroes, which he's apparently been working his way through on Switch, and wanted to compare to the Genesis original. He even requested the Japanese version.
    This isn't bragging; it's just me gettng hit with the realization that given the choice, kids often like better and even more complex games than we expect. They learn so fast it's surprising. If it hadn't been for Switch Online SNES games, I'd have never given him credit for being able to have taste in games on his own at a young age. Maybe something to consider for folks wondering how to introduce their kids to games.

    MMPR The Movie takes the music from the OST "Power Rangers A Rock Adventure", it's amazing how they made the renditions of the original tracks. BTW the lack of variety in enemies seems to follow the show: fight putty patrollers or Ivan Ooze's army and then the big monsters. (The game also goes back and forth with the story mixing the tv show with the movie) They could have used the Tenga Warriors and mix 'em with the Ooze monsters but it seems that the cartridge size or the budget made an impact on the final game. The cave level it's a maze, if you make it properly you'll fight Lord Zedd.

    To each their own, but I think the movie game on Genesis is a lot better than you give it credit for.
    Lack of grunt enemy variety is accurate to the source material of the show, as they usually tend to focus more on the "villain of the week", or multiple tiers of important villains in terms of the movie. Personally with how fun I found the rangers to control, the repetitive grunt enemies never bothered me that much.
    I've never really had much of problem with the cave level. The visuals hint pretty well that you can smash one of the larger rocks in the background to reveal an exit.
    With all the different rangers having unique weapon attacks and special moves, I feel it really gives the game replay value, and made for interesting co-op strategies from various character combinations.
    Honestly the only real disappointment I have with it, is that the last phase of the final boss is a cutscene and not playable.

    • @SegaLordX
      @SegaLordX  2 роки тому +3

      Any number of things could have been done to add variety to the enemies without breaking accuracy. You do not need to completely add a new designs. Like all beat'em ups, enemy variety can come with different moves, weapons, vehicles, hell anything other than repeating the same exact sprite for an entire level. Like TMNT there could be different Putty's with different weapons. A Putty that jump kicks a lot. A Putty with a sword that has greater reach. A Putty with a laser cannon that can hit you from across the screen. This instance was just poor game design.
