    I’ve got a very similar setup. Waste oil boiler heated slab shop and wood stove and heating oil furnace in the house. Even got the tote cages, white obs F350 and tractor with snow thrower. It’s nice to see I’m not the only one doing it this way.

    I enjoyed your video much, you are easy to listen to. Good content for any home owner.
    I watch many video's about alternate heating. One of the most interesting of late is "Sand Batteries". Looks like the waste oil burner is your most cost effective heater. Might be worth transferring some of the shop heat to your house. I am imagining a "Heater building" between your house and shop with a thermal Battery, "Sand" to capture and transfer the heat.

    • @EverythingElliott
      @EverythingElliott  6 днів тому

      I’ve read up a little on those sand batteries, they seem efficient for a small space, but I don’t think they would work well to transfer heat to a larger space such as a home. You also need a very efficient way to heat them
      Up.

    In the 90s the oil change I worked for installed a waste oil heater. Worked mostly great the first year but had 3 major flaws: 1) once a week needed to drain water from the bottom of the holding tank (try getting rid of oil contaminated water), 2) the oil was preheated prior to consumption within the injection nozzle that would coke up (I reworked it by building a different mouse trap), 3) like an oil furnace it was ignited by a constant spark using great amounts of electricity. Owners still liked it as it lowered the use of the infer-red heater by 50%. Located 5 minutes north of Syracuse NY. I like the ducting from insert room to other parts of the house. For the garage you can create something with ducting from Lowe's or Home Depot.

    • @EverythingElliott
      @EverythingElliott  7 днів тому +2

      I can see those being an issue, and have experienced some of that on my old unit, but this new one has almost 1000 hours of run time on it with 0 problems. And I’ve only drained water out of the tank once. Helps when you are getting good oil.

    • @Falcon-eh8tq
      @Falcon-eh8tq 7 днів тому

      I have seen a design where no continuous ignitions is required, a heated plate is placed inside the firebox, waste oil is added drop wise onto the heated plate, put fins on the plate to direct air then blast with blower to create a vortex, turn up the oil to keep the plate hot, it will sustain combustion. but the plate does need the energy to be heated to nearly red hot.

    I’m in NW Wisconsin and I heat my small rambler exclusively with wood I scrounge for, it’s easy here to find enough wood but I only use a full cord and a lot of scrap wood I collect throughout the year to heat the house. I just got a nice donation of logged red oak and hard maple from a construction company building a cell tower down the road, I’ll get about 6 full cords from it. Subbed.

      sounds like youve got a pretty good system going on. I havent paid for logs in a couple years, everything I get, I get for free. I've got a set of log bunks I made for my trailer so it's easy peasy to pick up free logs.

    My grandfather tied his baseboard heat into his fireplace via a grate made out of steel pipe. He put a switch on it so that he could turn it on when there was a fire going and turn it off when there wasn’t so you weren’t sending heat up the chimney when there was no fire. Building a hybrid stove for the garage. Currently its an old lopi wood burner but i am going to drill a hole in the top and use a dosing pump to drip oil onto the wood fire. This is a very old school trick with a modern (dose pump) touch. Stove will consume a fraction of the wood normally and i dont have to pay to get rid of my old oil. The house has a modern lopi woodstove that is high efficiency.

    I saw the video you did where you added insulation to your metal building. However I see that the ribs are still steel. You may want to do something about that. Even just air infiltration from the joints can cause severe heat loss. There are several options.
    tape over the joint
    Add rigid foam over the bare metal, then tape foam to foam.
    Get a froth pack, and spray foam 1/2 to 1 inch of foam over just the ribs. Home depot has the froth pack in stock for around $430 for 400 board feet. Canned foam is about 3x the cost. The froth pack also has a fan nozzle for area coverage. You could probably get around 800 linear feet out of one kit. This would probably be fastest and the most bang for your buck. The drawback is that it needs the surface to heat up to over 50F when you apply it or it falls off a week later (it happened to me). You could probably warm it up near the heater and work out from there. After you do one kit it will be easy to tell if you need another and if it made a difference.
    Just paint it, brush or roller, at the joint and over the metal. Anything is helpful, but a silicone roofing paint will be the best to inhibit thermal transfer. A 5 gallon bucket is around $100, and willl cover around 1200 square feet, or 2400 linear feet in a 6 inch wide strip. in that section of the store they have a mop paint brush that makes applying it a breeze. I applied it to the top of a flat roof (shipping container) it may drip if you apply it to the inside of your roof.
    Of course there are other options too.
    You may also want to insulate the slab. Dig down next to the slab a few inches below dirt level around the perimeter, add rigid insulation, then back fill. It will keep you from loosing as much heat from the slab. Foamed construction adhesive makes sticking rigid insulation in place a breeze.
    It would also be easier to do all of this stuff in the summer.
    good luck.

    • @mikegrok
      @mikegrok 2 дні тому

      I got factory seconds insulation from insulationdepot. It was about 20% of retail. There were imperfections... Some weren't cut square, some had voids, some had a chunk taken out of the corner, but none of that detracted from my primary use of insulating shipping containers. I used a froth pack around the problems, and usually trimmed 9 inches off of one end. There are other sources of recycled insulation, and it is usually as good as new, and much cheaper. I had 8 4ft stacks delivered, and have 3 still remaining to put up. The ones I got were 3.5 to 2.25 inches thick polyiso, paper and fiberglass faced.

    Fantastic video. Just a comment about your domestic situation. You should have suggested to your wife that you wanted to to put French doors in to let more light in and help with heat from sunlight in the winter and not mentioned the wood idea. She might have gone for the doors. And then you can suggest the next phase. Do it in stages. Then at least you could have wheeled your bin of wood to the pile to unload even if she said no to you storing the bin there. Love the heating systems

    So is it air assisted to the burner, its a common waste oil burner thing.
    I have about 5 county fair grounds i get used vegetable oil from.
    Its probably one of the most difficult things to run through a waste oil burner.
    Something to wach out for is engine oil blended with bio products, ive seen people have issues running that sorta oil.
    Veg oil is a flash point around 600F when its new from the store. For reference, D2 fuel is about 150F flash point.
    Pure biodiesel is around 250F
    .
    I find veg oil works best for long distance trips where your running for more then a hour down the road. As you need it heated to really run right.

    Nice setup on home/shop heating. I heated for years with just wood. No excuses! you have the tractor to move the wood several times except the last move is manual. You say you burn a lot of wood so think about how long it take you to unload a tote of wood (x) all heating season. It's unacceptable for you not to have french doors to just set the wood inside and be done. I'm sure she wants you to do other things for her and this just takes more time away from accomplishing that.
    I have wanted to do something similar to you for years now. I work on huge generators for a living. some of these generators I get 110 gallons of gently used oil a day. I haven't decided if I want to build my own like (Karl's Off Road) of buy one from a company like Central Boilers Classic CL 4030, CL 5036 and CL 6048 which does wood/LPG/NG/oil. These Beckett oil burners can be easily converted to run on waste oil. They are pricey though! I could however heat my 2100 sq ft house and shop for essentially for free.

    Holy crap. $75 a day in diesel to heat your house? That's over $2000 a month!
    I have a 5 ton ac/heat pump. In Florida. Ny house is 3000 sq ft
    The hottest month is Aug at 95 degrees avg. My electric is never over $300 a month. The coldest month is Jan. The Heat pump runs 24/7. Electric bill is never higher that $175. And that includes 2 80 gal electric water heaters, a pool pump and automatic irrigation system. You may want to rethink your energy strategies.

    • @EverythingElliott
      @EverythingElliott  6 днів тому

      You have to consider the heating differences though. So you’re cooling from 95 to let’s say 70 which is a difference of 25 degrees. Where as I’m heating from 0 degrees to 70 degrees which is 70 degrees. That’s a much larger temperature difference and would require
      A lot more energy. Things are just a little bit different up here in the north. I use a heat pump for AC in the summer where I average 90 degrees and bring it down to 70
      And it works very well for that.
