I struggle with the in house movement. The cheaper price and serviceable ETA/Selitta was just fine. Now it's $1700 vs $1000 and there are plenty of alternative watches if consider over Damasko
To me I would put them in the same style of watch. Aesthetically I prefer the sinn, but that’s personal preference. I don’t know too much about the movement in the Damasko in terms of durability, reliability, servicing, etc. I wonder if perhaps the movement in the Damasko puts it over the top.
I bought this watch, the DK36 on the bracelet in May 2024 from Long Island Watch. It’s a wonderful wristwatch! I can’t recommend it highly enough! Don’t think about it, just buy it! Great customer service and fast shipping!
I was going to buy that a week ago and it was gone. I now know why. Have you got on Damasko watch club yet? You should so I can ask your thoughts about the new movement.
@@jamessego6660 The watch was delivered on May 29. I’m very, very happy with the watch. It is extremely well made. I put the watch on my time-grapher and it’s running a consistent plus four seconds a day which is within cosc chronometer performance. If you like Demasko, you might take a look at another German company, Sinn. I also have the Sinn 556a and I’m very happy with that as well. Both brands are of the highest quality and manufactured in Germany.
Quite amazing stuff: a watch company, which doesn't advertise, instead puts money into production. I dabble with Japanese knifes and that hardness thing on Damasko watches seems to be a legit way of keeping those pesky scratches off. You definitely made me consider the Damasko brand watch if I ever consider buying something in the 1-2k range.
Great looking! When you think about what luxury brands charge for a house-movement, this one's a bargain. I recall your video on the Damasko movement and it's innovative enough! Added to the fact that they put their efforts of technological innovation into the bracelet, and to me, that's a bargain!
Just wanted to report I’m enjoying my Islander GMT Republic. Wanted the Blue but it sold out 😢. The grey is very nice and understated. Great communication from the Islander people. Thanks Mark.
I lived only minutes away from (and between) their flagship store and factory. I also visited both. Very nice people and very nice watches, but from the outside would NEVER guess that there is a watch manufacturer inside thier production building ^^.
Really stoked to see you released the rubber deployant strap for the SKX case. Can’t wait to order one for my new ISL-91. I think adding a olive drab green color way could be a big hit, or maybe it’s just me hoping you add it so I have an excuse to get the ISL-34 and put a OD green strap on it. Lol
It's expensive, esp. the bracelet, but not exorbitant considering the microbrand status. I am always impressed by a watch that uses high technology applied to the basics so well, ceramic bearings and all. The in-house movement really raises the bar and puts them in a different league. I think it's well worth the money, even though I can't afford it right now. It's on the "wish/wait" list.
Microbrands are supposed to be cheaper, not more expensive than big-name brands. That's the whole point of microbrands - more value, not less. Damasko are now pricing themselves on a par with Sinn, which makes me wonder what their niche is? They used to be a Sinn alternative. Now, not so much. I'll just buy a Sinn and have way better resale.
@@17cmmittlererminenwerfer81 Not sure if I would consider Damasko a micro brand, possibly back in the 90's, but they've been around for almost 30 years now and have definitely leaped out of the microbrand relm.
@@17cmmittlererminenwerfer81 Pretty weird take to be honest. Sinn has gone up massively in price recently with many of their newer models are pushing the $4k price point while still have mediocre bracelets. I think what Damasko is doing is impressive for small family owned business.
Love my Damasko DS30. ETA movement. I was pondering if I should go for the DK30 with in-house movement. I decided against it because a) the ETA is great and b) servicing the in-house is expensive. I really like the Rangemaster, Mark. Mine works fine. 🎉🕐🍸🍸
I too have the DS30 and have had it for three years. It’s scratched (believe it or not) it’s accurate and just stunning. I need need need the bracelet though, and cannot find one
@@islandwatch It tells you that your watch didn't stop and that you don't need to wake up more to check the time anywhere else! One reason I got a watch is to know when a super smart dog was eager for me to get up or just eager for something more interesting than me sleeping. Really.
Hey Mark,so I ve scratched my bezel insert of my Orient kamasu pretty bad .I saw that you are selling two bezel types but i prefer the oem look and i was wondering if there is any chance of making a ceramic or sapphire bezel insert for the oem bezel .If so let me know , thanks in advance
Do you think you'd ever do an islander in a similar style to one of the GMT Damaskos or the Sinn 856 GMT where it's basically like a 38-40mm field watch with a GMT hand? But for a hopefully budget friendly price. So many examples of that style of watch float at or above $2000, even when they're coming from the microbrands. But I'm sure there's a reason for that.
@@islandwatch So does that mean the colour of the case and bracelet in the website photos is not accurate? In the pictures it looks like standard stainless steel colour but in this video it is a darker shade, almost gun metal like.
I'm curious why they would go with a friction clasp. I have a watch that has a friction clasp and it is difficult and painful to take off because I like my watches to wear snug.
What does Damasko have to say about the service interval and authorized service for their in house movement? In-house movements can sometimes be expensive to service. Parts and watchmakers can be difficult with some brands. This is why I would never own a Rolex. There is a beauty to ETA movements in terms of service and parts availability worldwide. ETA recommends a 5 year service interval on their movements.
@@islandwatch So Damasko will sell parts to any watchmaker that I choose to execute routine service through? That is very good to know. Then the maintenance costs should be in the same ballpark as for an ETA movement.
Gotta say, it’s a pretty awesome bracelet, though. I choked on the price initially myself, but glad I pulled the trigger. It makes the watch, in my opinion.

Really nice focused design, but I really dislike that butterfly-type closure. A standard clasp is so much easier. Thanks for showing it.
Thanks for watching!
@@islandwatch sorry to miss you in LA! Hope you had a good time.
We need a head to head cage match between this and the sinn 556

I think the Sinn 104 and 105 would be a better match since they’re daydate and pilot watches.
Sinn 856 would be a better comparison

I read a few years ago that Damasko doesn't lume the second hand due to the weight of the lume throws off the balance of the second hand.
