It's astonishing. The electricity of the Besie band seems to hit her core and she appears 10 years younger in her songs with the Count. It's like these musicians were food for her.
They both had a very similar musical style. If you listen to Count Basie and Judy arrangements, they both start slow and then build to an impassioned and loud and perfectly swung section.
When she sings its literally like she is the strongest most robust woman that ever existed. As soon as she stops she is frail and shy... she really embodies the divinity that the art of song is
She was so: pretty, kind, hilarious, witty, talented and loving. She was used and exploited by her parents yet Judy was a great mom. Her kids adored her.
Wow -- Jerry Van Dyke was so Young & Slim & Cute then! I probably did watch this at home with my family, at I was 15 years old at that time, and my parents were fans. Little did any of us know at that time that Judy was a distant cousin! And the same can be said for Jerry Van Dyke! Except for my Maternal Grandmother's Paternal Line, we didn't know that we had many deep roots into the 1600's of Colonial America, and meant there would be Famous Descendants who would be Our Cousins, such as Judy and Jerry. Thanks very much for sharing this video! It helps preserve American Cultural History!
This is what we missed during the decades of American legalized Segregation, because performances like this were banned and against the law. It you don't think Judy would have liked to have performed with top organizations like Count Basie during her MGM height, you are kidding yourself. No coincidence that after having Mickey Rooney headline her first show, she has Count Basie for episode #2. Bucket list checked.
The Soul Bossa Nova/Austin Powers song was highly fascinating. Great choreography there that no doubt inspired the movie's dance scenes with the song so many years later. It's even more so interesting how long of a storied career Quincy Jones has had, even being featured in the film nearly 40 years later.
11:50 when Judy calls Count Basie "Bill" it makes me smile because only people that were close to him called him that. They had to have known each other all the way back since the 30s-40s. And their performance of "Memories of You" is my favorite rendition ever.
Paul you know how many years I spent on UA-cam or anyplace on line to find these and you have them listed here , full complete with commercials. I wish there was a way I could copy these I would and save them! Thank you so much. Nice work
Judy is a tremendous hostess. She makes her guests seem like they are part of her family, and she has known them for years. The only mistake she ever made was hiring Mel ( the rat fink ) Torme'. He came looking for a job on her show, and being the friend that she was, she hired him. After the show was cancelled, the rat fink wrote a book. And it was releashed just after she died. And mr. Rat wasn't very kind or truthful. Glen Ford who was dating Judy when she was shooting her show went looking for mr. Rat fink and found him. Glen walked up to Mr rat fink, and decked him. I would loved to have seen that, I would loved to have been there yelling for more. Because, mr. Rat fink deserved a beating. Nice friend you turned out to be mr. Rat fink.
@@charlesevans6918 You're right, hardly forgotten among people who love great singing. I saw him and Peggy Lee in 1993, unforgettable. I didn't go there because Mel had a delightful personality. He didn't. Mel was persuaded by Judy's producer at the time, George Schlatter, who was a friend and fan of Mel's, to take the special material writer job for Judy. There is no evidence of any altercation between Glenn and Mel. Judy's affair with Glenn was doomed; he was a movie star, certainly not going to count out pills for Judy.
whenever I see her shake it off between cottage for sale and hey look me over it hits me just how much she put into her work - she makes it all look so effortless but the emotions she would have put her little body through every performance... I went to an acting masterclass a while ago and the guy said that a science experiment was done on actors - they were hooked up to a brain machine and had to perform and literally the only time the researchers saw all the parts of the brain light up to such an extent was when the participants were in a car crash simulation. And most performers don't have as much depth as Judy. Her brain would probably fritz the machine.
Talk about having to follow an emotional, slow song with an upbeat number. You can see she had to gather her composure in those few seconds in between.
Ok first and foremost. That April in Paris Lyric 39:05 “ Paris’ Springs means Everything, Your Heart Begins to dance, Yes and a madmoselle can make you tell, Your Tender little secrets, that balance out a true romance.” Absolutely a kiss of beautiful artistry. That line I had to listen over and over the vocals and everything man. I tried looking where this came from cause it is not in April in Paris at least not in any version of the original lyrics. Still can’t find where it comes from if it’s a mash up or anything. I want to sing it but I gotta know how it fits in the song like where did they put it in the form. And what’s the original song? Can Anyone help me. Second of all you can tell the age of times then. Yes it’s the Judy Garland show. So I can get why you see her a lot and her sing it’s her show, and I think with Basie there his band is providing the sound for the entire show. Mel torme can sing and I get why she would need a male duetist on the show or counterpart for her. but jerry waste of time didn’t need to be there. That was more time to showcase Judy and Count Basie, and possibly duet or dance with more people of color. Imagine if Judy and Aretha sang with Basie, or Ella or many others. They featured some black dancers or rap dancers and Judy danced with them. And if Judy was gonna show case new young talent like her Daughter certainly not Judy Henske. Would have been nice with Basie there to show a young girl from Harlem or NC. Can’t speak on the writers or producers of the show etc.. because I didn’t know them if they racist or not. But you can tell it just a thing that happened during that time. Basie is even a stretch for Southern watchers where the episode could have not been shown. But Basie is the Main Feature the main Guest of the show and we barely see him or hear what could have been some awesome music because of these other pointless “characters”. Man the music was jumping in this episode. And Jerry as the comic relief took too much more screen time for more great music.
49:45 I'm not a tv director, and don't know a thing about it.., but I would have given her "3 more seconds" after that beautiful strenuous delivery of "A cottage for Sale" to jump into dynamic "Hey Look Me Over".. Both magically done. Judy was marvelous 💞.. 🪻🌿
Good lord, what were the producers of Garland’s show thinking booking a singer opposite the great Judy Garland and with the name Judy Henske to boot. That’s just plain confusing. Then dratted Jerry VanDyke jumps in with his weird & unfunny Schtick. It was a waste of talent & time & $$. Judy Garland’s unfortunately. But, gee, Basie’s band is magnificent ❤
Don’t understand why he was on the show wasting screen time. This was The Judy Garland Show not the Judy/Jerry Hour. Every time he’s on I’m asking why am I watching you, where’s Judy?
It is because he is Dick Van Dyke’s brother is the only reason he is the on the show. I remember My Mother The Car. I didn’t know anyone else remembered that crappy show and I thought it was long forgotten just like Jerry Van Dyke should be. The business was all nepotism then and it is that way now. Liza Minnelli is another no talent too and would never be noticed or on any show if she wasn’t Judy Garland’s daughter and her mother stuck her out there. I knew girls in my high school with 1000X the talent of Liza Minnelli but they were never on any tv shows because they were not Judy Garland’s daughter.
Poor management. Freddie Fields and Judy's lover David Begelman should have taken on a proprietary role in Judy's TV career at this point, and put their feet down: No Jerry, No Judy Henske. There's no way Judy Garland didn't know her show wasn't working, but was too insecure to exert her own good taste.
@@jazzguy1927 - I get your general point...Minnelli was just out of high school and definitely not anything special at the time, but at least she did improve with experience and eventually become substantially better - not on her Mom's level but much better. Many other children of famous people get a lifetime of opportunities and NEVER improve. Garland was doing what most other parents do..give their kid a chance in their field of work, so can't fault her.
Judy was, of course, magnificent, Basie was an absolute doll and Torme could really sing. But what were they thinking of with Jerry Van Dyke and Judy Henske? I notice that Henske was one of only two guest bookings who didn't share a second of screen time with Judy (the other act I think were The Brothers Castro the following show). As for poor Jerry Van Dyke, his material was shockingly poor. The whole running gag with the banjo is atrocious!
What an amazing woman, in SO many ways. The world lost this huge asset in 1969 - much, much too early. Judy was only 47 years of age when she died. She suffered so very much. Worth reading her wiki page. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judy_Garland

This was the apex of her career-probably one of the best show of the series. Thank goodness we have these 26 episodes. RIP YOU SWEET THING!
The best opening. She looked and sounded great. Thank goodness we have these 26 shows.

She shredded that opening number with Count Basie. You can tell he really appreciated it.

That's his real first name, by the way.
Best opening! She looked and sounded great, George Schlatter should have produced all the episodes.
These great stars great talents
I usually can't see Young Judy in Middle-aged Judy, but in that opening number, you could see Young Judy peeking through
What a treat 😍 for a Monday night 🌙 👌

My grandfather used to love when my grandmother danced with him, 'The One O'Clock Jump' 🎶🥰

I like her hair Luke this, why they changed stylists confuses me
Mr. Luke quit after the 2nd eppy
@Marcel_Audubon , it was a typo, it should've written that I liked her hair the regular way
44:38 Judy goes Austin Powers.
Why isn't this restored in color?
Can I ask what source you got 16:9 videos from? Did you crop it yourself of was it released officially like that at some point?
Where is the rest of the series? Only certain episodes are available
Most are on you tube.
The volume is far too low.

7/7/63 would be 4 months and 15 days before November 22nd.
