My first long distance trip with BYD Seal (Premium, RWD) dated 16 April 2024 in Malaysia with decent weather in the morning and afternoon but drizzling in the evening.
Started from home in Puchong at 7:00am with 100% battery level. Reached Ipoh (220km travelled) with 61% and reached Kamunting toll (286km travelled) with 50% battery level remaining. Had lunch in Taiping and stopped at Petronas Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah (Ipoh) with 32% battery level remaining (383km travelled). Quick top up 29% (32% to 61%) and reached home with 23% battery level remaining (total 599km travelled).
Calculation 1: 50% get 286km, so 100% should get 572km.
Calculation 2: 68% get 383km, so 100% should get 563km.
Calculation 3. 100% + 29% - 23% = 106% get 599km, so 100% should get 565km.
Driving condition:
ACC setting at 110km/h
Air cond setting at 23c
Only driver in car (1 person only).
I am happy that it is very close to the claimed WLTP cycle of 570km.

@@haffizul517, whether or not to go for EV depends on your travel needs. If you are travelling in Klang valley with daily travelling less than 450km per day and has the infrastructure of home charging, I think you should have no problem to go with BYD Seal premium version and yes I would recommend that you get one. If you need to travel long distance such as traveling to Penang and your house in Penang has the infrastructure to charge and you can charge it overnight, then I would say you have no problem on owning BYD Seal. From my records, if you are using home charging, BYD Seal is only marginally cheaper to run compared to Toyota Camry Hybrid. If you are charging outside with fast charging, then the running cost per km basis may be higher than that of Toyota Camry Hybrid with the current low Petro price in Malaysia. I do not know Toyota Cross Hybrid fuel efficiency but I tend to believe that it is not far from that of Toyota Camry Hybrid. Interior wise, BYD Seal looks more premium than even the current model Toyota Camry, let alone Cross Hybrid.
Unless your travel pattern is such that you need to go outstation very often and always on the rush, otherwise I would say EV is another experience and should be a good option.

Went for a test drive of the premium variant recently. This might sound corny but that test drive made me reconsider on whether the premium brands eg BMW, Mercedes are worth their premium anymore. Even the base premium spec was crazy fast for me and my wife. I should also mention that the rear cabin is so spacious even when I’m at the wheel (186cm) and the comfort of the front seats is something else. The ventilation feature doesn’t just cool your bum, also cools your back! At 180k (and in that beautiful white colour too), it’s a steal and it’ll be my first EV.

You really can't underestimate how much of a relief it is (at least to me) to have 'normal' gear and indicator sticks. I will never understand why Tesla is obsessed with minimalizing everything.
To save cost, obviously. Less parts, cheaper to make, more profit.
Tesla will back to buttons for sure, because euro ncap already stated buttons are compulsory to ensure 5-star ratings

been driving ICE for past 25 yrs, i got used with Tesla gear and indicators usage in 1-2 days time. now, me and my wife eager and often fighting to get chance in driving the car. tesla getting new features and updates every 2 months. i am still fascinated by the whole new driving experiences delivered through this piece of tech on mobile.

Why I will not buy the BYD Seal right now ...
*Blunt throttle response which is noticeable in all modes.
*Hated the turn indicator sound and various chimes, it was a pain.
*No built-in maps and navigation, which is a big miss for a car in this segment.
*The software was a bit buggy.
*Most of the controls are through the main screen, which is a major distraction and a safety concern.
*HUD is useless in bright light and only displays current speed.
I would have preferred a proper instrument cluster; this one is small and is busy with too much information on a small screen.
Though I didn’t scrape anywhere, it will be a pain on slightly larger speed breakers and on bad roads.

The lowest I can get from my Seal Premium 0 -100 km/h is 5.5s, and the top speed is 190++ km/h. Seems like BYD underclaim it's power.

Good review. Don’t bother about those byd haters from tesla salesmen as tesla salesmen will come here and said this one and that one bad la. Take a look on why Tesla is expensive to maintain but reliability is too poor if you can see from any complaints from the website and other that Tesla is not doing better than not only just BYD but also other brands yet Tesla fanboys can’t even acknowledge that tesla is not as good as many other brands.
Tesla salesman got no sales commission like BYD sales men. Those who can afford Tesla got lots of spare to spend. Why bother? You shall get one BYD yrself if you like it so much.

AWD, iTAC n dynamic dampening.. things that I've not experienced before.. though in term of practicality, Premium is a wiser choice in a long run..
LFP is one of the main factors of choosing Seal over M3..

Beats Tesla hands down in my opinion. Any comparison. Have done 40K in an Atto3 before Seal, and in my opinion it was a great vehicle too. But Seal? -- is supreme in any aspect of driving. I have a short list of cars and was ready to start shopping, but then this BYD popped on my radar and currently sits ontop of my list. Im accepting of this being my first EV but i cant just get along with the way the car looks on the road. it has a narrow and tall stance and has the same road presence as a Civic, Cerato, Lancer, corolla or A3 despite its dimensions being a class above those compact sedans. Its so strange, but i cant shake this car from the top of my list! Arrgh!! Because of this car, i dont have an Audi A5 in my garage.
I have owned the AWD Seal for 5 months and love the car. I tend to drive it in eco mode as the throttle response is smoother but still great performance when you want it. The main reasons I bought a Seal over Model 3 was the LFP blade batteries which are much better than NMC. I also have the V2L hooked up to my solar system to give my 6 Tesla PowerWalls of home backup power - videos on my channel

It's not bad. The Model 3 has slightly more headroom, but the Seal bench is more comfortable with far more legroom. The floor is relatively lower compared to the Tesla too
Can someone explain what "fun" means? Isnt it all dependant on the drivers mood at the time or so than the car?
I can have as much fun in my honda accord along mountain roads as much as i did with my S15 and STi from my youth.

Byd looks very good on paper but buying a car is not like buying a t-shirt. We need to know if this car is gonna be running for long time not lose quality after 10000km on it , the next thing is the charging system and the most importantly is the build quality in accidents and for malaysian roads. You need to consider all of this and then compare it to a C class
Lots of people have done way more than 10000km in Australia already. Build quality never lose to German cars. Euro NCAP 5 star which is full marks. Extremely safe. Same for BYD Atto 3, Seal, Dolphin, Tang, and Seal-U. Al Euro NCAP 5 stars.
The host owned a C class. So it is fair for him to said that.

reviewer said seal premium (cheaper model) is more comfortable in suspension compare to seal perfirmance (more expensive model), is it not the other way around ? because only seal performance has FSD (Frequency Selective Dampers) which gives more comfortable ride

Nice looking car and a good competition to most continental models in the market, frankly in my personal opinion, the center screen could have been designed much better, rather than an a overly sized and ugly looking unit, also from a design point of view, the smaller screen behind the steering wheel should have been designed as an integrated unit into the dashboard. BYD should aim to be more original in their design approach, rather than copying from the continental brands.
Nice review. I think the BYD is very good. The AWD option is my choice. But the charging speed is very poor i will say that.

Yes, but indirectly 800V architecture also allows for faster charging - as seen on other 800V EVs such as the Ioniq 5/6, Taycan, e-tron GT, but not the Seal.

@@hafrizshah4937 Yes. Ultimately it is down to the battery cell specification. Not all battery cell are created equal. Some can handle more C rating than the other. Nominal cell voltage for LFP is 3.2v and 3.6-3.8v for NCM/NCA anyway. Even if you pack it as 800v instead of 400v, it is still the same cell. You still have to charge according to the cell limit. That is the case for the byd seal battery.
BYD never prioritise on fast charging. It's just their style. Just like how Toyota never prioritise on making fast car with high horsepower.

One thing I don’t like about the Chinese cars ICE or EV because the overly soft suspension is really annoying when going high speed. It feels like riding a sampan. But this Seal is different as the host said it is not like any other Chinese car in term of the suspension setup.
Yes, BYD Atto and Dolphin sucks. Felt like on pillows. BYD Seal blew my mind. Firm but pliant ride quality. Reminds me of VW Passat and Arteon. Perfect German ride and handling standard. Not there yet but pretty close.
Maintenance cost is the most importance as EV resale value isn't good.
Tesla legit doesn't care about you, non refundable booking fee is already a big red flag, and everything being charged such as colors is beyond me

Why Seal is more worth than buying Tesla:
1) Interior looks nicer and doesn’t look empty box like Tesla which doesn’t make people get bored when driving BYD
2) Not need to pay so much money for repairing/replacing parts if there is any problems
3) More durable than Tesla. Also not much quality issues if buying BYD than Tesla
4) Easier to drive including long term ride than Tesla
5) Better sound system since got premium speakers
6) Better distance range
7) Better handling and faster acceleration

Our seal is cheaper than Australia price. Australia have dynamic spec which is low spec we dont get.. as range is quite low
C class is very plasticky. I'm not sure why so many reviews always use them as bench mark.

While BM built is still much comparable to seal.
EV batteries last 12-15 years. Less in the tropics. The cost of replacement is almost the cost of another car.
My Myvi is 11 years old and still running very well. With good maintenance, I can make it run reliably for another 10 years or more.
Enough said.
With RM10 to 20k difference of prices vs with interval maintenance whether free maintenance or not. It still makes most people still think Tesla likely more worth.
But comes about servicing, including going to workshop and also repairing Tesla in case of damage, did you think still worth than BYD when too expensive to repair, difficult to find Tesla service center and also many problems than BYD?

The Seal Performance is definitely a worthy rival to the Model 3 LR but I'd still pick Tesla due to the following:
1) Better handling, sharper steering & more agile (much lighter in weight)
2) Better throttle response and superior 1 pedal mode
3) More refined software & UI, stronger CPU
4) Much better charging capabilities plus Tesla's supercharging ecosystem
5) More efficient and has a longer range
6) More storage space and has an extra rear screen
7) Sleeker frameless door window
8) Better sound system
9) The exclusive 'Sentry Mode' feature, better ADAS and the availability of full self drive technology in the future
Hello to Paul Tan (Chinese Descends?) in Malay, we are from Canada/USA
We have never driven a Car/SUV/Van/Truck Made in China... GMC Car/Truck and of course last but not least Japanese Cars.
With Incomes and GDP per Capita of Malaysians = Definitely Owners there should buy BYD rather Teslas as both now are Made in China. We are loyal Owners of ICE Honda and/or Toyoda and Subaru; those cars got us where we needed to go in the Winter when Temperatures are in Minus -40°C for a few days and Summer sometimes as hot at Malaysia too. Our Subaru Legacy Made in Japan delivered performances that we expected.
It is not practical to own a Tesla where we live and work... There are no Imports of China Vehicles in North America...

surprise surprise... Tesla MY has reduced prices. Price wars indeed and super obvious too.
I drive a Tesla model Y RWD and test drove the BYD Seal Premium as well. BYD is bouncy and I felt like I'm sitting in a Grab car as rear passenger. The BYD acceleration has a response lag compared to Tesla. Handling also seems loose for the BYD. Software is really backward. Regen braking almost feels negligible and there is lack of 1 pedal driving. So much more..
I think BYD is suitable for those who still wants the original feel of an ICE car. This is fair.
Highly recommend anyone to test drive both cars before jumping to conclusions.
But still BYD have better durability, more safer, lesser worries, more practical and also got lots of interior details than Tesla. Don’t forget that Tesla will not be qualified as EURO NCAP Safety Rating when kicks in 2026

Purely in the city, max effort to drive as efficiently as possible, then yes, it can be done, as mentioned.
@@hafrizshah4937 unlike ICE car, driving that saving fuel in ICE mostly not apply to EV, as long you drive slow EV will be very efficient. If you use in Highway, ICE car will be more fuel efficient compare to the city, but EV will more efficient in the city driving. So in general, if you driving in the city not aggresive, NEDC range will normally can be achieve.

Probably depend where you're live and I don't know the normal habit of Malaysian driver, so probably your experience can represent average Malaysian.

If you still think BYD battery not safe then don’t take any EV car. You can take ICE car always. For me, I'd buy Tesla over these pros:
1. Software
2. Rear screen
3. Faster AC charging
4. More energy efficient
However, i do understand if people buy seal over M3 because of:

2. Premiumness
But also Tesla not durable and not cheap to repair for Tesla. Not as good as BYD. Even technology and interior for BYD also better than Tesla
Tesla does have a faster ac charging, if someone always use 11kw charger, for normal home user who do not have 3 phase electricity, it will be 7kw max.

@@mrjeremyc6231 I used BYD solar power inverters twice and first lasted six years and the second, four years only. So I don’t trust BYD products anymore. Did you use any BYD product before? My son drives and owns a Tesla Y. He found it very reliable. He left the car with 90% battery charged for almost one month, and when he returned home the car still has 88% battery level.
