I find it fascinating that despite her heroic line "Because I'm a police officer!", Lindsay technically _isn't_ a police officer when she says it. In a show where we have serving police officers acting like ruthless criminals all over the place, there's a huge irony that the one person who identifies as an honest cop so strongly is actually a civilian. I thought it was an interesting comment of the show - that being a cop isn't about the badge, it's about the integrity.
Reminds me of Mike from Better Call Saul his speech to the client on bad cops and good criminals and vice versa. Lindsey participated in a murder which even if it's a scumbag is not what the good guys n cops are meant to do otherwise what's the difference between them and the scum? But her character shows people are shades of grey not black and white. That good people can b enticed to do bad things but can also make amends
I've recently started and finished Line of Duty - all six seasons, and Lindsay is easily my favourite character. So well played by Keeley Hawes as well. Amazing video!
To note, importantly Lindsey did _not_ falsely accuse Steve of having an inappropriate relationship with her. It's a really really significant development in series 3 when she reveals she possesses evidence that Steve _did_ have an inappropriate relationship with her, and thus committed perjury to conceal it in court. This development leads Steve to being ostracised by his colleagues for most of the season, and ultimately cascades into his suspension from duty, and framing by DI Cotton.
That scene, barely a few seconds on screen does stay with me and Lindsay is my favourite character. At the end of the film Scandal - a film based on real life events - we find out that no one went to Stephen Ward's funeral either. Two different characters who in the end were not likeable enough and raised to many difficult issues for anyone to want to associate with them even after death
Absolutely love Lindsay Denton! Id go as far as saying she is probably the most complex, well written and multi layered character on TV. She did wrong but for good reasons and right to the end she protested her innocence, because in her own mind, she wasn't guilty, she did what she did to save Carly and got in way over her head. She says it herself in the first episode "You're making a case from my misfortunes." Her mum, the one family member she ever had got ill, so Lindsay made sacrifices and ended up living in that horrible little house alone, with no money and an awful neighbour. She had the abortion (the worst thing shed ever done) and Dryden still left her. The scene in the toilet when Carly commented that she was "lucky to have a mum who bought her nice things" when Lindsay was emotionally vulnerable started the chain of events. Here was a child who she could try and save and in the process bring down a career criminal. She cared deeply about her work and the "one good thing in her life, being a police officer" was all she had to feel good about at that point. She was incredibly clever but constantly underestimated by everyone around her.
Lindsey Denton is my favourite character in Line of Duty. Well played by Keeley Hawes, the character was a woman who was underestimated and sidelined, she was caring for her elderly mother. She was super bright but had to put up with the people around her not being as bright as she was but not show it. I guess I can say that at the time she was in Line of Duty I felt like I could identify with her! I was in a job in a team with an incompetent and insecure manager. Looking back I wish that I had just been honest, but instead I played along and into the manager's hands. Enabled her to abuse me and others, I was just trying to keep my job. It's not good, it is actually very bad how these worse than useless managers are enabled by employers. So I get Lindsey Denton, she had if a lot worse than me. And the affair with her superior and his getting her to abort the pregnancy!? Such good writing and such good acting, she was a really well flleshed out character
Loved the video! Denton is one of my favourites as well! Do I hear a Northern Irish accent? If so, great to see more people from good ol’ Norn Iron contributing to the UA-cam landscape!
Denton and Akers conspired in what they thought would be a bloodless kidnapping of Tommy Hunter. They didn't expect bullets to fly and the car to be set alight - after all, Akers did die as a result. As for the money, it can't have been planted by Arnott. Where would he get such a sum, and in the pollen-marked notes? But would Denton be so careless as to leave it in a handbag around the house, especially as Arnott had become a regular visitor - or (even more unlikely) in the bag when it was at the nursing home, as suggested by AC12? It's just possible the OCG planted the notes - or simply left them there as payment for her to find. This would explain why she thought Arnott had framed her. Akers mentioned a payment to Denton but not how much, and we don't know she agreed to take it - although she did certaily need money. All this would help explain why Denton was seemingly convinced she had done nothing wrong - given that she would have justified conspiring to kidnapp Hunter on moral grounds.
I loved her but hated her too, she was tainted but not quite in the realm of the OCG, the saddest part was, not one person turned up to her funeral. She was the character season 7 desperately needed, instead, we have...Jo Davidson
She was a total reversal of the femme fatale archetype - a deceptively ordinary and mundane woman whose cunning is achieved through that dull persona. Honestly, it's a very unique change from the sexy and charming women being the brilliant but dangerous masterminds - predictable as it is demeaning...
Have to say I completely disagree with you on how she responded to Manish Prassad -he deserved what he got! Maybe that's why I enjoy this character so much, she is pure revenge at time and it's so beautiful to watch! 😍
Thank you very much, and glad you're enjoying the channel! The Buckells theory video is coming soon, and all will be explained. In the meantime, I also have a video essay on John Corbett as a character available, which you might like if you liked my Lindsay video :)
What’s not to like about Lindsay Denton? She plays the piano, has a gorgeous cat and is handy with a bottle. 😏 I wholeheartedly agree with you that she’s the best character ever and we can’t discount Keeley’s ability to play tough yet incredibly vulnerable and complex women, being the reason that’s possible. She should’ve won ALL the awards and it’s a damn slap in the face that she didn’t! The only negative part about her tour de force performance is that subsequent featured characters pale in comparison. Poor, misunderstood Lindsay. You can tell Jed went out of his way to pile on the sad parts of Lindsay’s life and the incredibly awful things that happen to her. So much so that I’m surprised at the end of S3 where we see her grave, that we didn’t see a bird flying over and sh*tting on her headstone, which of course, is made out of the sh*ttest piece of wood. She solved the whole case! Steve, at least, should’ve showed up. The wee gobshite 🤌🏼 Also, I’ll never forget that Bella, the cat, was treated by Kate as a piece of evidence needing to be bagged. Even in jest it doesn’t sit well with me. She’s a floofy queen and should’ve been returned to her rightful owner 🤨🤌🏼 Good video overall. Could’ve done without the two minutes plus of Clint the Dint Eastwood footage, although I do get your point, and the fact that you forgot to list her cat being taken from her and adopted out to whoever tf, as one of the bad things she had to endure, but otherwise pretty solid. Going to watch S2&3 again and smile when Lindsay exacts her revenge. 💪🏼🙌🏼🙇🏻♀️
Interesting character study. But Denton and Arnott DID have a sexual encounter. She played the phone recording and Steve had to admit it. He played down how far it went; even so, it was still inapropriate. Denton said something to the effect she didn't offer the recording as evidence in the trial because it was personal. As her whole case for aquital required the jury to believe her about the inapproproate behaviour, it is difficult to belive she would have done this.
Hey! Me again. Got some news for you. Jed showed a photo of someone in prison on Twitter. The face was very far away but the person had darker skin, and looked like it could be a slightly grown up Banerjee.... Feel free to take a look for yourself, it’s on his Twitter.

Cool vid, definitely didnt just finish binging season 2 and 3 untiI 5am. Anyway, Lindsay was great in season 3 but I absolutely loathed her in season 2. I felt her character was actually really inconsistent. If you actually consider how genius she is for most of her time on the show, I find her actions in the early part of season 2 ridiculous. Firstly, the entire plan with Tommy’s ambush is a joke. It is absolute nonsense that all of the officers were unarmed whilst escorting Tommy to the safehouse. There is also no explanation provided for the change in route. Whilst I realise the change of route was unplanned, she didn’t defend herself adequately at all. She has taken 50k sure but even if you assume she is considered innocent, she would deservedly be considered grossly incompetent and I would guess she would lose her job/be demoted in real life. It is equally ridiculous that she seriously assaults her neighbour and also assaults Kate whilst under such heavy scrutiny. I just felt that there was no way late season 2/season 3 Lindsay would have been this shit. As for whether she’s a good person. No way lol. Yes, Tommy is pure evil and you can absolutely make a case that he deserves to die, but conspiracy to murder, whilst taking a bribe to keep quiet from another obviously bent copper? That’s not a good person.
