  • I have been obsessed with trying to get the freshest coffee possible and the only way possible is to roast my own coffee beans. I have started roasting my own coffee beans since 2017 and it all started with a toaster oven. I think this setup I have right now is the best I can get.
    I have watched a lot of Sweet Maria's coffee roasting videos on their channel and one of their video series featured the Larry Cotton's flour sifter designs and I see a lot of folks on UA-cam successfully building their own flour sifter coffee roaster and I decided I had enough of toaster "baked" beans and went out to build my own roaster.
    This is the default way I roast my beans now. From experience, different beans will roast at different times and I prefer my beans roasted to City Plus or higher. I like my coffee dark with a roastier taste rather than a fruity acidic tastes. I recently discovered Liberica beans grown in Johor Malaysia and these beans are super unique have a cross flavor between arabica and robusta and it blends well with other Arabicas.

      Thanks! As of today I no longer used this method. I fashioned a metal disc from a tin can lid to convert it to the "wobble disc" agitator which is very similar to Larry Cotton's original design. You can google for "Home Made Larry Cotton heat gun wobble disc roaster" to find out more.

    Great video! Where did you get the metal spoons? The spoons I have are difficult to bend. How did you secure the spoons to the rotating shaft?

      Hi I bought very thin steel spoons from my neighbourhood home supplies store. As of today I no longer used this method. I fashioned a metal disc from a tin can lid to convert it to the "wobble disc" agitator which is very similar to Larry Cotton's original design. You can google for "Home Made Larry Cotton heat gun wobble disc roaster" to find out more.

    Hi Bro, may I have a roaster system that you used in this video or any other idea you have for me, cause I’m interested on it. ??

      Sure, just look for Larry Cotton's Wobble disc roaster on google, my roaster is inspired by his design. I also no longer use the steel paddles to agitate the beans - ua-cam.com/video/EXGXj9AlCqY/v-deo.html . I recently modified the roaster again and you can search for it in Reddit under "Cyclonic Heat gun Wobble disc roaster. Excellent heat distribution and very even roasts!"

      @@DreamWorld98 You mean the ideal roasting temperature? Green Coffee will start to burn beyond 235C onwards. Also you can drop the coffee at different temperatures for Medium to Dark roasts. Do a general search on coffee roasting temperatures and you should be able to find lots of information.

    What roast are u able to achieve? Can you get light roast? Or just full city?
    Thanks.

    • @weelianocraft
      @weelianocraft  Рік тому +1

      You can get a light roast around 7min and hearing the 1st crack. I usually go for Full City plus when the oils are just about to come out and that will take around 10 to 11 minutes. I roast around 200grams with a 160 to 180 grams finished roast. The type of beans used can also determine the roasting duration.

      Check out Sweet Maria's videos on the wobble disc heat gun roaster by Larry Cotton, I think he post details on how to build one. I'm now using the wobble disc method and it works great! 200gms of Green coffee in 9 to 10 minutes. Resulting in 150gms of roasted coffee.

      Hi I have since updated my roaster into the wobble disk version here - ua-cam.com/video/EXGXj9AlCqY/v-deo.html. If you google for Larry Cotton's Wobble Disc roaster, there are many diagrams and pictures you can follow. Larry is active in the Reddit coffee roasters group, just search for wobble disc roaster there, he will be more than happy to share his plans and parts list with you.

      Here's a old reply which contains some of the parts I used -
      @weelianocraft
      1 year ago
      I used galvanized perforated steel band/strip ordered online, they are quite pliable and easy bend and cut with heavy snips. I also used a L shaped bracket for the JGY370 Worm Motor . The motor I got was a Micro DC Speed Reduction Motor High Torque Turbo Worm Gear D at 150RPM rated at 24V. I used M5 Nuts and Bolts to secure the motor bracket. I used smaller screws to secure the worm motor to the the bracket. You also need a coupling to connect to the rotating shaft and these are secured with worm screws. The motor speed is controlled with a 3V-24V DC Variable Voltage Motor speed controller. I pretty much ordered everything online, the online site I used is Shopee.sg . I am pretty sure you can get the equivalent items from Aliexpress, Amazon, ebay or a general search online.

      It's around 180 degrees celsius, as the beans are dropped, the temperature will drop about 20 degrees and gradually rise to 220 degrees at the end of the 10 minute roast.
