    Great video. I came across your video. I was scrolling on Craigslist on "free items." Showed, Free coffee beans. Have 7 130lb bags of Mysore Indian coffee. Turns out he's an established medical doctor here in America and he is from India. His dad owns a coffee bean farm in Mysore India. He had partnered with a coffee cafe franchise here in my town and ended up closing a lot of there store locations. He no longer partners but every so often he brings back huge bags of green bean coffee. I was able to get there and get a bag. I kick myself in the butt for not getting one more. He also gave me a 10lb bag of roasted coffee beans I went to a local brewer making co. and bought tight seal buckets so I don't contaminate the beans. I thought this was the most wonderful tasting coffee. I thought I would share. I might have to double the amount of the bags you bought on amazon so I can roast at least 10lbs upfront again. Thank you again for this information. I tried stir popcorn maker, air popcorn maker but they take forever and dehydrated my beans (just wanted to test 1c on each).

    Love the roasting technique! I've also recently started roasting my own... in an iron skillet. I love it! It's all hands on so you can see, smell, hear, feel and fully experience every stage of the beans. I would like to point out that you never mentioned degassing, or (off-gassing) for at least 3 days after you roast. The coffee should not taste very good if you brew it immediately after roasting. 5 - 16 days after roasting is your flavor peak! 👍👌

      Sadly, I was unaware of degassing at the time. But I appreciate it now and it actually “matures” the essences in the roasted bean. Thank you!

      Really now? I've never had any of my roasted beans get that "old". I've ground them as quickly as cold after chilling to cool because I wanted coffee.
      I've been weekend roasting to get my week's supply of beans as that all the patience I've had with roasting via my cheap methods (popper and skillet). I'll have to rework my plan to see if I can taste a difference. Won't be THIS week though! Thanks.

    ***PLEASE READ. After releasing this video, the product manufacturer changed the specs on the grill bag composition. I would have NEVER purchased a bag made up of a PTFE coating.     You asked, what do I do for coffee. I have been roasting coffee at home for a few years now in a modified Whirley Pop I purchased from Sweet Maria's with a coffee sampler. I modified the Whirley Pop pot with a handle and the cover with a little dc motor. I roast 1lb of coffee each roasting session. I shoot for 12min roasting time and I am always tipping the pot with the motor running throughout the roast. My daily brew is with an Aeropress however, my Cory all glass vacuum brew from 1938 makes an excellent cup. Thanks for the video.

      @@AwareHouseChef Flame control is so important, there are so many variables. My biggest fear is cooking or baking the beans. When you open a roasted coffee bean the color should be the same throughout the bean. Welcome to the world of home roasting, where your coffee always gets better with experence.

    Another great video! Thank you for posting this. I did not know too much about organic coffee and roasting your own beans until watching this. I used to like a dark roast when I was younger, but now I prefer a medium roast too.

    You got me with your comment on the teflon coffee roaster! I reached exactly that same conclusion earlier today in my research.
    Considering how much I have spent on my search for the perfect coffee brewer, the cost of those barbecue bags & a bit of experimenting is going to be manageable. Thank you!

    I have been using the same brand of coffee beans however I've been using a Costa Rican blend because I prefer a lighter roast I have been using a small batch hand operated stovetop roaster I've enjoyed doing this however I've been wanting to roast in larger batches to save time I am very interested in trying your method thank you for your video.

    Great buddy. Where there's a will there's a way. I usually go to Fairway and get a "higher" brand coffee from time to time. Maybe $12 - $20 a pound. It's good, but I bet there's nothing like roasting and grinding your own. Just like making homemade pasta or bread, you put in the time and it's worth the effort. Keep it up my friend.     Thank you for this. It came just in time for me to restock my coffee supply. I am definitely going to try roasting my own beans, because I really like a light toast in thr morning, and a dark toast at night.

      @@MrWiseinheart I'm a mother, and now a grandma. What's sleep? But yes, joking aside, I do sleep at night. Dark roast coffee contains less caffeine than light roast. Think of a "breakfast" roast, they're generally lighter. An espresso roast is much, much darker. It's a stronger extraction, but it has less caffeine by measuring dry weight. A very dark roast, like an after dinner coffee, is extremely complex, and it is commonly not served with milk. It's a relaxing beverage taken after a heavy meal while you chat and gear down for the night. Caffeine in the bean is a volatile component, and it is easily removed by heat, usually roasting.

      @Lydia Lady Understood,😄 my sis has 9 kids (youngest one named Lidia) Didn't know that dark roast has less caffeine, now that I think about it makes sense that it's burned off in the roasting process, but there's still enough in it to keep me awake though, I guess caffeine affects me a bit different.

      @@beavercan i haven't gone back and watched the video but it takes me about an hour and a few minutes to make a medium roast and about an hour and forty five minutes to make an espresso roast. It depends on your preference. I know coffee roasting happens in shorter times so if you can do it in fifteen minutes that's great. It won't work in my oven in such a short time for sure

    takes too much time, for a home roaster especially in small quantities just use a small popcorn machine. once you figure out the time and use a wooden spoon to keep stirring it , it is very consistent in the end result and takes very little time. I roast 45 grams in about 3-4 minutes.

      ​@AlexAnteMachina But 48 minutes is waaaaaaayyyyyy too long. No roaster ever roasts for 48 minutes. I have dedicated roasters where I can change the temp. My roast times range from 8 to 12 minutes in a fluid bed roaster. I've talked with the owners of the roaster down the street. They have it down to an absolute science, based on origin and method of processing. They typically don't go more than 15 minutes in a commercial drum roaster. Plus, it looks like he's tasting it right after he roasted it. Based on the story he told, the other guy pulled espresso right after roasting it. That's not how you do it, either. The flavor develops over the next several days as the beans off gas the carbon dioxide. Yes, I'm sure this method made better coffee than you can get at the grocery store or charbux. However, if you really like coffee, there's a lot of not great stuff going on in this video.

      @@AwareHouseChef the method is super easy...just leave the mesh bag with beans in the oven and in minutes its ready for its chaffs to be shaken off...that easy...vs the tedious manual roasting....tnx again brother.

    I've been ordering my green beans from Burman Coffe Traders in Wisconsin for five years; the customer service is the best. John might not always be available by phone, but he will always quickly respond to an email. have the earlier model of their $189 small batch roaster. I also roast in my cast iron frying pan with a stainless steel whisk and use a stainless steel mesh strainer for the chaff. My favorite is an AA or a AAA Organic Kenya coffee, but the best ones have been hard to come by the last few years. I usually use a single origan. I've been on the hunt for a coffee I love as much as the Kenya AAA Peaberry I had my first year.

    If I roast a batch for myself how how long can it sit? In other words, do I make a couple days worth, a weeks worth, a month? Does the flavor drop off over time? I assume even if I go to a premium roaster and get it shipped it wont be as good is that right?

      From my experience a roast will keep it's flavor without changing in an air tight container for a while. If you open it to grind the beans daily, the flavor starts to change after about a week or so.

    I've been roasting for about 15 years using various methods. I've landed on using a WhirlyPop on steroids and an induction plate. I can do 2lbs in about 40min. It's the most consistent roast I've ever achieved.

      Two pounds in 40 minutes is pretty good for home roasting. What do you mean by "on steroids" and what's an induction plate?

      @@erinwarmuskerken9604 it's a thick stainless steel model with a top that locks down to the pot, a magnet to hold the lid open and very smooth gears. An induction plate is a burner that almost instantly heats up and cools down. You can only use certain metals on it. Just Google it.

      I have not and since this video was released I migrated to an Ailio Bullet Roaster. This method will get you about 70% of the way to a descent cup of coffee. Ultimately you need more heat and less roasting time than an oven can provide. I just want to be as transparent as possible.

    Hey George, so I tried this method in my electric convection oven for 48 mins at 400 degrees and mine came out burnt. I just did a second batch this morning 400 degrees for about 13 mins the cane out looking beautiful. Will know in a couple of days how they taste. Need to degassing them 48 hrs.

      I had the same experience. Convection oven at 400. Even 15 minutes is too long. I’m around 10 minutes for a dark roast. But it does not roast evenly. Need to shake about halfway into the roast. My ideal time so far is around nine minutes

    i use the popcorn popper method! look for this vintage popper from the 70s which has a stronger motor than current models and can take the heat; "The Poppery" by West Bend

    I love coffee. At the moment I'm using Peet's organic, mix it with coconut butter from Kevala, no salt kerrygold butter, pure cacao powder and a litter bit of redmond salt. it taste amazing.

    This is very inspiring. We have a roaster here in Denver that specializes in light roasts and I took their Intro To Light Roast class. They made the same light roast coffee in a drip machine, pour over and espresso. Compared to the pour over and espresso the drip coffee was awful. The pour over had nice subtle flavors and the espresso had layers of flavor, like a fine wine. That was 10 years and I've been hooked ever since. Your convection oven method looks quick and easy - will definitely give it a try.

      Thank you! Just make sure that your oven is calibrated. Sometimes the variations in temperatures and types of ovens like electric versus gas makes the time different. As long as the roast looks good to you it may take a little less time or a little more time you have to experiment with it. Let me know how your turns out!

      So, a stainless steel screen envelope definitely works but an idea for a consumer friendly product would be an silicone envelope that is not teflon coated. Dealing with the chaff is always the hard part and your method with a benign material like silicone would work GREAT: a toaster over on a tv table table in a bath tub in the bathroom with the exhaust vent on, roasting in a silicone pocket and boom - home roasting easily with ventilation and chaff control. For the video I would do it on a balcony or patio or garage and the people like me with their propeller caps screwed on tight will construe the rest of it. :)

    Exactly what I was looking for 🙏🏻! Just a question on the fan, why do you use it? Is it to cool the beans faster then without, so you can proceed faster to the brewing step? Only is there another reason?

    I'll have to hunt up those bags and some green coffee! I always hesitated on roasting coffee because I can't be consistent; this method looks like it is.
    On cleaning your siphon ... hot water will slow the staining, not stop it completely. To remove the stains, use - wait for it - baking soda. Depending on the part, either use baking soda on a damp cloth or paper towel, or soak in a baking soda and water solution. Rinse well, it rinses much more easily than soap.

      Thanks for reaching out and for the tips. You need to go as hot as you can in the oven and reduce the roast time. It will make a consistent coffee but it will also be kind of flat. I have found that the more you extend the coffee roasting time for the same roast level, the flatter it becomes. It is still easier than roasting in a pan and you will get consistent results but not just earth shattering coffee

      @@subwaytm unfortunately, after I released the video, the manufacturer changed the info on the item on Amazon. The bags are ptfe not silicone. I replicated the process and released a video short. Rather than use a bag you can roast the beans on a silicone mat. It works the same way. Otherwise, search for bbq mesh bags on Amazon. I do not recommend you use them at temperatures over 450 degrees as ptfe breaks down at high temperatures

    Just found you, fantastic stuff, thanks. Any thoughts in using an air fryer? I have a Ninja, I am concerned about the smell in the open plan kitchen/living room here. I am thinking of roasting out in the garage. What do you store the roast in for degassing?

      I’ve moved on to an Aillio Bullet. I am really getting into it. First off thanks for the kindness. I find that on average the beans need three days for a city to city + roast to mature and degass. Kind of tastes flat. I taste in day 1,2,3 and the coffee matures. Hope that helps. All the best! As long as you have a consistent way of roasting that is repeatable then that is the method you stick with.

    Based on how you described how his coffee tasted I have probably never experienced a good cup of coffee. I have ordered shade grown beans and am anxiously awaiting their arrival. Was planning on using my hand crank popcorn popper to roast but if that's a fail I'll try your method. It works great to roast wild Yopon leaf's for tea so we will see. Thanks for sharing!

    Cast iron pan, two layers of raw beans, medium to medium high heat, stir continuously with wooden spoon, aprox 15-20 min of a roast for dark. Ventilation is absolute must, do outside if possible! When color is reached pour out beans into cooling try. No need to wait, measure, grind, brew, consume!

    Do you buy specialty organic coffee beans? Supposedly coffee has a ton of pesticides on them. I just read an article on specialty organic coffee that is only 1% of the coffee sold. Have you heard of this before? Just wondering if it's a gimmick or not! Love your videos!!

      If it has the USDA Organic label on it, it has to meet certain criteria for pesticide and herbicide control. I'm hoping that those standards are not compromised or that the regulations are not being made looser. Could there be a boutique brand that goes above and beyond USDA standards? I'm sure of it.     I noticed you don’t have an Amazon link for the silicone bags, and when I searched Amazon, there was no mention of a Heat resistant silicone bag?
    I did find a Non-Stick BBQ Grill Mesh Bag that looks like the one shown in your UA-cam video made with a “PTFE non-stick coating”?
    PTFE or Teflon® Non-Stick Coatings is now a stable and safe compound, but there are some healthy limits to it. For instance, if you heat the cookware above 300 degrees Celsius or above 570 degrees Fahrenheit, the coating will start to break down. When it happens, toxic chemicals will be free into the air. The action of inhaling these fine particles is dangerous, and it may cause Teflon flu or Polymer Fume fever.

      Yes. I searched quite a bit to find a silicone bag. The bags I purchased said silicone. After I posted the link, one of the viewers told me that they are not silicone they are PTFE. I believe the manufacturer change the information. For that reason I remove the link. Please see the pinned post under the video, where I offer an alternative solution in a very short video.       I do not. You will get the sesame results with my second method just by roasting the beans on a silicon pad. I made a follow up video about that

    Interesting roast method but would take far too long for me to do. I just pour about 1/2" of beans in an old fry pan with rounded sides and flip-heat-flip-heat for about 12 minutes or so per batch to get a somewhat dark result. My way isn't perfectly even color but tastes better than the usual ground coffees from the grocery store and the caffeine is still there. :) One thing I've never done is weigh it before and after to see how it truly stacks up against the cost of buying roasted. How much weight is lost in the roasting process? Ahhh well,it's something different to do whenever I feel like it.

      After I posted the video, the manufacturer changed the specs. I can't find one that has a silicone lining. Only PTFE. They say that PTFE is safe as long as it doesn't go over 500 degrees. But I'm not going to chance that. I did make one using silpat. It worked just as well. Did you see that video?

    Try off-gassing your coffee for 4 days after roasting. The coffee will be releasing carbon dioxide immediately after roasting and will taste a bit funny. I recommend using an airtight container with a degassing valve to do this so that it won't oxidize and become stale. The difference is astronomical! 5-16 days resting period will be your peak for optimal flavor! 👍

      @@AwareHouseChef Try some different roasting methods! I recommend the pan method I personally use cast iron and whisk but many others prefer the whirly pop popcorn poppers! 👍

    Hey, I love your ideas but you mentioned that you didn't want to use a teflon coated pan BUT you are using a PTFE bag which is Teflon! Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a synthetic fluoropolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and is a PFAS that has numerous applications. The commonly known brand name of PTFE-based composition is Teflon

    You really should let those beans degas for a few days... The trapped CO2 in freshly roast beans really has a negative effect on the flavor profiles and will not allow the finer notes to fully develop during brewing. With a medium roast and your roasting method, I'd go at least 4 days. The lighter, the longer, the faster the longer.

    I’ve never had a “real” cup of espresso. I’m too old to admit that. 😊 I should do that soon...find a good spot and buy myself a cup. I do buy organic coffee....but, I’ve heard it does not matter as the beans are never in contact w/ the spray due to the hard, outer shell. IDK though.... ???

      Hi. I just wanted to jump in. You're correct that coffee cherries have the outer skin and pulps to act as a buffer. So pesticide residue is pretty small, although still existing. A bigger and more practical concern is toxins from fungi while seeds are being dried. The industry got pretty good at controlling them, but it can be always an issue for producers that don't pay attention, which brings me to the issue of organic certification. The certification, as far as I know, doesn't guarantee quality control over all the processes involved. And at the same time, the cost for certification process keeps some farms from getting certified even when they practice organic farming. So I want you to have a more comprehensive view on what's "good" coffee. Remember it's an agricultural product, just like a carrot or a cut of beef. Don't get on Amazon and buy a product simply because it's certified organic or from a region that sounds familiar. I know it requires a learning curve, but it is rewarding to pay more attention to different coffees. There are some well-established green coffee sellers, such as Sweet Maria's or Royal Coffee, so you might wanna take a look at their websites too.

    Heck, I just spread my cooked beans onto a baking sheet. Once cool enough I just rub the beans between my hands. Then just go stand in the yard and pour the beans between two colanders. All free.

      If you can, please read my pinned comment. The bags turned out not to be silicon. After I posted the video of the manufacturer changed the specs. They are called mesh barbecue bags and they are an Amazon.

    How can freshly roasted coffee make good espresso? Also isn't 48 minutes too long? Baked defect...

      You have to de-gas it for a couple of days. My apologies. The roasting process works though. All the best.

    I’ve been evaluating different methods for home roasting and found this excellent video. I’ve been searching for the silicone mesh bags, but all I can find are Teflon. Did you really find silicone? If so, would you share the link? Many thanks.

      Thank you Wayne! I really appreciate you reaching out! When I purchased the bags the manufacturer had claimed that they were silicone. Afterwards, another viewer said that the bags that I had a link to were made from Teflon. They actually changed the description. So I took away the link.
