Just watching this awesome film again for the 10th time. John Candy, you want to slap him one minute then hug him the next. These 2 are awesome together. Laurel and Hardy.
Funniest movie of all time IMO. The motel scene when they meet Gus's son to get a ride to the train station is my favorite scene. "Train don't run outta Wichita...lessen you're a hog or cattle.....People train run outta SSSSStubsville!
*"She's short 'n skinny, but she's STRONG. Her first baby come out sideways...she didn't scream or nuthin.'"* Back in the day, I used to throw in quotes from that scene is that guy's voice in various situations. I could get people to crack up almost effortlessly. I've actually visited Wichita; dunno if Stubbville even exists, but if it does, it can't possibly be more bland or dull than Wichita.
Neil spots oncoming trucks and points out towards the windshield "Trucks! Trucks! Trucks!" Del "What? What are trying to say?" Del and Neil scream "AHHH!!!!"
December, 1987: I was home on a month's leave between graduating from Parris Island and heading off tank school at Fort Knox. Went to see this with a buddy of mine in a pretty much empty movie theater...so we could cackle and howl all we wanted and nobody would be around to care. During the scene where Dell-- having got turned around on the interstate, driving the wrong way and then narrowly threading the car between two 18-wheelers made me double over laughing so goddamed hard that I literally fell out of my seat and rolled into the aisle. The split-second where they appear as horrified skeletons, then Neal looks over and sees Dell dressed as Satan laughing maniacally...Christ Almighty, I wasn't sure I would make it out alive. "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" was nothing if not irrefutable proof that there was a hell of a lot more comedic genius to John Hughes than just formulaic "smart kids/dumb parents/misfits vs. preppy kids" flicks. Not that they weren't entertaining, mind you-- "Uncle Buck" was a friggin' riot-- but they were a different creature. I suspect that Hughes was somewhat motivated to make "PT&A" by a desire to avoid being permanently pigeonholed as simply America's greatest teen angst auteur.
