DIY Tube Rock Sliders On The Jeep

  • In the last video we recapped the box rocker install I welded into the Jeep XJ back in 2018. In this video I add on some 3mm wall 40mm diameter mild steel tubing onto it. This will function as an additional slider but also provide a step so that the roof top tent can be operated without constantly opening the doors.
    I did this on a budget using mild steel tubing with pre bought bends that I could weld on. Sadly my friend hasn't got a tube bender that can bend anything more than 30mm diameter this was a little too big.
    Hopefully they will be strong enough for what I do and help protect my doors from any more dents.
    In the next episode we will prime and raptor line them.

    I have to say it's really nice seeing someone work on their vehicle without a nice garage full of tools. It's cool to see you make what you have work and gives hope to all the people on a budget that watch these. Great video as always!

    Always look forward to seeing one of your build videos. I complain about having a 20 foot workbench and not being able to set a can of soda on it. You've built yours in a garage with a gravel floor and no heat! AMD have done a super job.

    One of the best , if not the best re- worked xj on the internet... People are cutting themselves short by not checking out your videos , great content and that's xj has turned out exactly the way an xj should turn out, wanting to continue my xj build a solid as that one, I have a 98 5 speed sport ,still a 4.0 in it and I want to keep the 4.0 jus my desire .but your Diesel xj has an awesome set up and amazing build , and the fact you actually use it only makes your progress show it's true colors , again awesome xj .👍👍👍

    Great job! When the 80s montage kicked in I did wonder if there was going to be a shot of you using duck tape then all of a sudden your jeep is a makeshift tank - I love it when a plan comes together.

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  Рік тому +1

      I started out with a 45 degree elbow but liked the 60 degree look more. Would have been way easier to just use the 45s.. I probably should have just bought complete bends though I would use what I had already bought. There still going strong thankfully 💪 thanks for watching

    What diameter tube did you use and what did you use for the rocker a 2x6 inch?

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  3 роки тому

      I used a 40mm diameter tube as it was only available in metric here. The box section is a length of 2"x2" welded to a length of 2"x4" to make up 2x6.

    • @gatordave6629
      @gatordave6629 3 роки тому +1

      @@WorkshoptoWilderness awsome but what was the wall thickness i was wondering if I should get 1/8 or 3/16ths since measurements here are imperial

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  3 роки тому

      So I went with 1/8ths to keep the weight down as I used two lengths of box welded together. I couldn't get 2x6 in the UK sadly. The inner wall on the welded box section adds a lot of strength from twisting but it also adds weight. I've impacted several large rocks when crawling River crossings and it does dent the tube slightly but nothing I really care about.

    • @gatordave6629
      @gatordave6629 3 роки тому +1

      @@WorkshoptoWilderness yea I think I'll do 1/8 as well not sure what that is in metric but 40mm is 1 1/2 so does your tube hold your weight good when you stand on them? I weigh 260 pounds so I may have to go a little bigger than 40 mm

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  3 роки тому

      Holds the weight perfectly. Me and the wife can jump around on them all day. I've lifted the jeep with the highlift with them. I guess they are welder onto the box in four places so they should be fairly tough.
