Beautiful country and I understand wanting to ride and enjoy it but it’s akin to shopping in downtown Detroit after midnight. Just not worth the risk to me.
I've had encounters with black bears that had me continually watching for them afterward, during the hike. The craziest one, was with a cougar. Crossed his path in the snow. He wasn't 50 yards away. I carefully continued on. I was on about a five hour hike. I was constantly stopping and doing a 360 degree scan, searching for it. I could just feel that it was watching. I was hunting, so wasn't terrified or anything. Sat and had lunch, at one point, and watched for it everywhere. Never once spotted it. Continuing on my hike, i made my way back down below, from the mountain/hill i had been on most the time. I was hiking upward when i crossed the cat. Now, back down below, i eventually crossed the bush road and did a long hike on the other side. I did a big loop, and i froze when i cut my own track again. There, walking right alongside my tracks in the snow, were cougar tracks. No way was it a second cat. I followed my tracks back out to where i crossed the road, and sure enough, the cat had followed me the entire time. But it was out of curiousity, probably wondering wtf i was doing walking through his territory. It's den would have been on that hill somewhere. There were rabbits everywhere, and plentiful with deer too, so it would never go hungry. But it was an eye-opener, as to how stealthy they can be. It was there the whole day, and i could sense that. And even scanning for him through the whole hike, knowing he was watching, i couldn't spot him once.
As a tourist I took a shortcut ( on foot) in Chicago just as it grew dark, this video reminds me of the fear I experienced from my stupid decision, that’s where WE need to carry, I was un-armed.
Theoretically, we all know what we should do, but actually how many of us would have reacted so well? And you also excellently filmed it! Did you have a spray ready? I was anxious every second, lest she would quickly turn and attack you. Congratulations!
In Idaho, we run at black bears and tree them... lol If I saw a black bear like this, we just make a lot of noise and run at them. they take off and run up a tree. However, I never would try it on a brown bear. but it works with black bears. also you need to make sure they have no cubs. does not work so well on a moma bears. they will stand their ground.

If this was spring or Fall this would have been a different situation or a territorial male, Grizz was trying to get your scent. Good job on being calm. Did you have bear spray? were you preparing to play dead? We all need to be prepared and aware of our surroundings, such a powerful animal, your life was spared on this day. What would you do differently?
The first thing I did was grab my bear spray and get it ready. The only thing I would have done differently would be to have my bear spray more accessible. I had it in my camelback, so it took a good 20 seconds to get it out and by that time the bear had covered a lot of ground. Another 15 seconds or so fumbling with the safety resulted in the bear getting quite close before I was ready to fire. Now I keep my bear spray in a holster on my belt. Other than that, I probably wouldn't have done anything differently. Maybe get more creative with what I was saying to the bear, instead of just "keep going", haha. I think the talking was helping calm me down more than the bear.
@@pull_pitch6012 This is such great advice -- keeping the bear spray where you can access it within seconds. Her behaviour and movements were so interesting -- it would be awesome to get an expert's opinion on what they think is going on.
Well done - you remained calm and didn't challenge (although your voice did sounded anxious at times). Film was unbelievably steady! Bikings the problem - you move too fast like prey fleeing predators.
Okay, I'm not a bear expert, but I read everything I can about safety in bear country. Biking is definitely a big problem, at least with black bears. Deer are their natural prey, and a mountain biker (or, for that matter, a fast runner) streaming through the woods is a very close mimic of a deer. If you believe that running away from a bear triggers their predatory response, then the same logic applies to (unknowingly) running or biking nearby a bear. ... I have hiked in black bear country (upper peninsula of Michigan), but I would never go jogging or biking there.
Bears are like people, some good and some bad! We tempt fait each time we enter the domain of the Apex predator…. Own damn fault if something bad happens! My thoughts on this encounter: 1. The bear wasn’ hungry? 2.The bear was a better natured bear? 3. You were the not the focus of the bear at that time. Timothy Treadwell was killed for several reasons: 1. He came across a bad/rank bear. 2. The bears were going to food storage mode for hibernation which placed he and his girlfriend in a dangerous position 3. He never appreciated the fact that a bear is STILL a wild animal that is not a manipulative pet.
I pick door number three. Another viewer pointed out the Bear sniffing the air as she heads into the trees. Oh and T.Treadwell was tetched I think, whacko as in not all intact mentally. The movie Grizzly Man says it all. ☮
the bear saw him, mentioning scent is completely ridicules. If you knew anything about bears, its behavior showed that he was in its path, and he should have known to step aside and not stand in her path. The bear was confused trying to figure out how to get around him (because it´s unlikely the bear will just run somewhere it has not walked before). She was trying to find a scent of any other danger and something familiar to her.

I wanted to make sure she was still moving away from me. Getting on my bike and making noise might cause her to gain interest in me again, so I wanted to be sure the bear was long gone. I stayed until I couldn't hear her footprints anymore.

Hiking in Grizzly country is sketchy. No way I wouldn’t have a gun or bearspray of some kind.
I had bear spray. Never enter bear country without it!
How was the rest of the ride? Brisk?
Beautiful country and I understand wanting to ride and enjoy it but it’s akin to shopping in downtown Detroit after midnight. Just not worth the risk to me.
Agreed 💯 %
funny how some of us feel more safe in places like this than in a city like that. experience
😂
Samuel you are too funny! I read all 455 comments and I like yours the most! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I’d be scared to ride away after. But I’d be scared to stay there. I suppose what I’m trying to say is I’d be scared.
That Bear is sizing you up pal - you are really lucky!
Doesn’t seem to be sizing him up at all!
What is that supposed to mean I need to be scared ,oh please ,I'm past all of that tosh 😡
Nicely done Bob!
You gotta be nuts to ride or hike in those areas. Sure, you may only see one every couple years, but it only takes one time and you are done.
Sam I agree totally! Those damn bears are insanely unpredictable! You couldn't pay me to hike or bike that trail!!!
bear sightings are very common. bear attacks are very rare. stop being scared of your shadow, clownboy.
So what’s scarier? Watching a bear circle you or watching it disappear into the bush and wondering where it went?
Mountain biking in grizzly bear country is asking for trouble
As a tourist I took a shortcut ( on foot) in Chicago just as it grew dark, this video reminds me of the fear I experienced from my stupid decision, that’s where WE need to carry, I was un-armed.
Scariest animal on this planet , glad it didn’t charge you brother
Theoretically, we all know what we should do, but actually how many of us would have reacted so well? And you also excellently filmed it!
Did you have a spray ready? I was anxious every second, lest she would quickly turn and attack you.
Congratulations!
Thanks! Yes, the first thing I did was get my bear spray out and safety off. My cell phone was pretty accessible so I grabbed it and started filming.
@@pokerman9108 Moma bears will not only stand their ground but will remind you of your place instantly, thats the dumbest thing to do, even if black bears are more fearful by nature all it takes is one of them calling your bluff and then all of your squad is gone.
@@pokerman9108 my brother in laws mom made a bear rug out of blacky she shot in her ranch back in the 70s . Mouth stayed open..was pretty cool but weird to see as a kid
@@mainsidequest5203 they're not calling your bluff without cubs. Their lives depend on it, A predator gets an injury and they're most likely dead in the wild. the wilderness is unforgiving, they're fully aware of this fact. even if they do call our bluff, We would probably shoot it. :) I never go into bear country without a hand cannon... first rule of the woods. we tree the bears so we don't have to shoot them...
Maybe I'd get closer next time see how far it would have gone?
I am assuming that on the other jand you gut the bear spray correct?
That is correct :)
the griz was circling with his nose in the wind trying to pick up a better scent
yep...notice how bear never looked at his prey...just kept moving sniffing.... bear must have changed his mind
Gosh I thought "Keep Going" was only said on date night. You're one brave man Sir.
I would like to know what did you have besides the camera 😅
Its kanada....
Do you carry a gun with you out there? Theres no way i would be in a situation like that without one
Just bear spray
It's illegal to carry a gun in a Canadian Federal Park. You can only transport a firearm, in a case, not loaded, in your vehicle.
@@kiYAKER741 fuck that
It looks like it's met someone with bearspray before.
I don't know you but I'm so very happy you made it out safely.
That bear has evidently witnessed one of his buddies get shot in the face by the ultimate apex predator.
I think that Bear was sniffing something off in the distance that he wanted. Luckily, he decided you weren’t it!
I thought the same thing.
Agree, probably the scent of a lady bear.
@@pam-gw6uk This bear IS a lady bear. Maybe sniffing out a gentleman bear.
Who bikes in the deep woods?
Bears are like people, some good and some bad! We tempt fait each time we enter the domain of the Apex predator…. Own damn fault if something bad happens! My thoughts on this encounter:
1. The bear wasn’ hungry?
2.The bear was a better natured bear?
3. You were the not the focus of the bear at that time.
Timothy Treadwell was killed for several reasons:
1. He came across a bad/rank bear.
2. The bears were going to food storage mode for hibernation which placed he and his girlfriend in a dangerous position
3. He never appreciated the fact that a bear is STILL a wild animal that is not a manipulative pet.
Not that you know everything. It's our planet, too.
Good comments Runn...
I pick door number three. Another viewer pointed out the Bear sniffing the air as she heads into the trees. Oh and T.Treadwell was tetched I think, whacko as in not all intact mentally. The movie Grizzly Man says it all. ☮
Interesting comment. What makes you think I'm tetched & "whacko"? Lol.
@@pull_pitch6012 NOT YOU! TT as in Tim Treadwell was wacko! Now you? You're too funny! You did everything right with the above bruin! 😊
must've been quite the hike with the weight of those balls.
She was getting downwind to get your scent looked like a young female
the bear saw him, mentioning scent is completely ridicules.
Good job. Bear was on a scent trail. Notice the head in the air.
I hike all the time with my 2 year old son on my back near Yellowstone National Park in Montana & I’m constantly worried we’re going to encounter a grizzly one day. Terrifying to think about.
Scary!! I would never take my little ones out hiking without some sort of weapon. I know most national parks don’t allow guns which is stupid but I’d risk it & bring one anyway lol. & have some bear spray handy, always gotta be prepared.
its been proven that guns arent very helpful when it comes to bears
Do you carry a firearm at all while biking in the wilderness?
Not legal to in Canada
@@pull_pitch6012 That's crazy.
This was way too close and freakin scary…🙈
I think you said gone ,way too soon😳Remember they can go obscured then come out charging before you can cover your balls😂
So you actually followed it at the end trying to film it? Walking towards where you thought the bear was? And you were alone.
I wanted to make sure she was still moving away from me. Getting on my bike and making noise might cause her to gain interest in me again, so I wanted to be sure the bear was long gone. I stayed until I couldn't hear her footprints anymore.
@@pull_pitch6012 good call
Looked like he was doing a wide circle around you ?
Insane. Like hiking in south Chicago while sticking money to yourself.
Far more dangerous than hiking in Grizzly country
ROFL
Good one Paul! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Next stop is the restroom.
Bears should start carrying people spray.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
