I asked my question too quick you proceeded to answer it! Oh my impatient nature, you’re a great teacher!
Thanks so much for helping those of us that just aren’t quite sure. You are a wealth of information
my pleasure Mary Ellen
Cathleen you're a great teacher as well as an amazing artist! Your instructions were very informative and you explained everything so well. It's like you were born to be an artist and teacher. By the way, that's a cool stool you got there! You have a very happy and excited customer! I'm getting excited! Woohoo!!! Hugs my friend!😊❤❤
That’s your art GE 🥰
Thank you for sharing. The person that gets both of those pictures is a lucky duck.
Thank you Judith
Thank You 🙏. This was very helpful...... and not scary like resin videos are for me. You are a great teacher. - Lorraine
Thank you Lorraine

So interesting. Thanks!
Great information, thank you
Thank you so much. That was very helpful, especially about the isolation coat.
Very informative. Thank you for sharing
Excellent information! I put this on my watch later list. I have to make notes and then try it all! Thank you so much for this.
Hey Cathleen!! I can't thank you enough for this tutorial! Your method has finally FINALLY enabled me to get a lovely smooth varnished surface on my paintings! I've done so much research and tried so many different methods but always been haunted by bubbles, brush lines, gloops or blemishes. Gave your method a go last night and POW! Perfect finish! Thank you!! xx
By the way, our son, Toby (15, autistic, superstar) has watched a lot of your videos with me. The other day we welcomed a group of relatives into my father in law's new apartment for a little drinks party. As they came in, Toby said, "Welcome to the No Bra Zone!!" It was so funny! Completely out of the blue and I didn't realise he'd been listening that closely to the videos!
Thanks again! We love you! Helen and Toby xx
Laugh my butt off. Toby knows how we roll. You tell Toby I would love to paint with him. Thank you Stardust One for your kind words.

Thank you Sandra
Thank you for sharing your knowledge on varnishing ❤️ your a wealth of information ✨ 😘
I just try to read all about it darling.
Very helpful. Thanks Cathleen!
Thank you Lisa
I truly need to build patience to do this in your style, as I encounter a problem with pouring it, some air bubble was left behind, and now it's lifting up the varnish. xxx and thank you once AGAIN!
My pleasure Roxana
Good day, Cathleen. Yes, there's such a word as "Opaqueness". Right on the spot. :)
Lol thank you. I say things wrong all the time 🤪🤪🤪
you are the one that taught me to put the gloss first and then the satin a long time ago. it made such a difference in that the gloss brought out the color before putting the satin. Thank you so much... I am not shiney girl either,,, lol
my favorite finish Laurie
Gorgeous. Thank you so much for the varnish tutorial. It was awesome, like you.💕😊❤🤗💕
Joalla thank you darling
Thank you Cathleen ,it’s very useful !

Carole thank you 😊
Thanks for sharing ! Saw your OG video but it’s always fun to see something again from a different view ! Never heard of that isolation coat ! Game changer
It’s good stuff Chicken Mom 😊
Thank you so much for this great information, Cathleen! Sure beats just spraying it out of a can!
This is incredible helpful, Thank you so much 🤩
So glad I was able to help. ReCh out if you every have a question.
Thank you so much Cathleen for sharing all of your tricks. I haven't had too many issues with varnishing but will attempt your technique next time. Your info about using satin varnish has saved me a major heartache. I have a piece I want more matte and would have varnished it with layers of only the satin...which as you stated would make it cloudy. My birch tree painting thanks you in advance!
OMG!!! This was a great video! LOVE IT!! This helped me so much! Thank you, Darlin🥰
That makes me smile 😊
That second piece is so ABSOLUTELY gorgeous
Thank you
Just have been watching this absolutely great tutorial video with very helpful information. Many thanks for sharing your experiences Cathleen 👍🏻⭐️⭐️⭐️😘
You're very welcome Karl
Cathleen this is such a helpful video. I had not heard most of this and the few things I had heard you explained so much better. You're A good teacher! I appreciate you so much. 💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗
Elayne B I appreciate you more darling 😊

Naomi I’m glad
Great tutorial, the best I’ve seen! Thank you Cathleen🥰
Josie thank you sending you hugs. So sorry about your Yoda. Brighter star in the sky Josie
@@COZCreationsArt thank you Cathleen. You being a dog lover, I know you understand. It’s just so damn hard. I can’t even start a project to finish it. A little scratch for Lido from his auntie Josie🐾🐾🥰
great tutorial ! I’m not a shiney girl either n I love my spinning stool too. All of the paintings you showed were fabulous
Tomasina thank you. We could spin around together. Race ya 🤪
Cathleen my Darling one…this was an EXCELLENT varnishing tutorial. I’ve always been afraid of varnishing…but you’ve given me the courage! You’re such a Doll! Love & Light! 💜🎨🤗
Don’t be scared Angie girl
Hello @Angie!
This was awesome .. ty so much !! I’m not so scared now😂😂🤣😅
Good 😊
Cathleen, you are too cute! With your little wheelie stool......wheeeeeeeee! Love it.
Thanks for that video, I picked up a few new tips! I think I will invest in some Isolation coat for sure, and I use the Liquitex Gloss varnish too, it's my favourite.
Mairi thank you 😊
Great video.
Thank you Sandi
I’m definitely the same as you. I prefer satin finish. Thanks for the advice on putting gloss before the satin topping.
Hi Cathleen, this is a lovely video. You are so precise in explaining and showing how you layer your varnish.
This painting is mysterious and soothing. The color theme worked great in this composition. The paintings on the floor are intriguing. You really have mastered your style.
Lucy thank you so much 😊
Thank you for this video. Varnishing has been a real thorn in my side 😂 but I’m learning. Great tutorial, very helpful!
Glad it was helpful Lauren
Thank you so much for sharing this valuable information with us. I have to say after painting for about a year and a half I’ve never heard of an isolation coat before you varnish. I wish I would’ve watched this video a long time ago and it would’ve saved me a lot of grief. Your paintings are beautiful by the way
Thank you Emily 😊
Thank you so much for that tutorial. I've been needing help especially with big paintings. Mine tend to end up with streaks no matter how much I try. But now I believe I'm good to go. Thanks to you.
Linda best of luck. Big ones are hard and intimidating
Dang, you are good!!!
Thank you Nathalie
Thanks for the great lesson
I have never used the isolation coat. There were people that were not in favor of using it at all, and I am pretty new to pour painting so I just did what they said to do.
Linda I’m not sure why people would not be in favor of using it. It’s so beneficial
Thank you for taking the time to do this again 😉 It really is hard to find some of the older videos if you're viewing on your phone. IDK about a computer, but my phone just doesn't let me scroll very far 🤔 You are the only artist I have ever seen discuss an isolation coat - good reminder! 👍👍 Happy St. Patrick's Day ☘️☘️
Mama D I can’t watch anything on my phone. To darn small 🤪
Excellent presentation. I saw your last video on this and it absolutely changed how I finish my art. Excellent (Sara Taylor has a great video also)
Thank you Mary. Yes Sara Taylor is wonderful
I use Gamvar by Gamblin. It is a varnish and isolation coat in one. It goes on like an oil but can be used on acrylic or oil painting. I put 2 coats on an acrylic pour and it turned out beautiful. I put one coat on another pour for a test and then removed it with Gamsol mineral spirits. Came off beautifully.
Thank you Kim. I have tried Gamvar Varnish. It was a bit to shinny for me and the satin was to dull. Maybe i should mix the two.
Cathleen this was soo helpful! Just wish it had been a day earlier because I just ruined a beautiful painting yesterday by trying a new varnish! 😢 Thanks to you, I’m sticking with what works!! Thanks love, Treesie💐💝💐
Treesie ugh girl. So so sorry 😞
I would love to see the resin piece that you’re holding up and you didn’t like resin because it reflects everything onto the painting and I understand that. I would love to see the video on that because I like the painting. Thank you so much for always teaching us your wonderful craft. We appreciate you. ❤

Cool stool, cool legs. Boy, you look good Cathleen! You have convinced me varnish looks better than varnish... the reflection of resin can really overtake the art!!
Happy birthday yesterday! great tutorial! I see so many artists resin their work and wonder why, I guess it's all preference. I've resined a few and hated what it did to the painting's appearance. Im hoping and praying that I make it to the fluid art experience in July but Im worried that I won't be able to go. I blew my knee out on my birthday 2 months ago and have been wheelchair bound ever since. If Im still wheelchair bound I won't go as it's too hard to manage on my own. Im really looking forward to meeting you and learning new things so I'll just keep praying for healing!
Vegas so hope your able to join us. Take care of that knee 😊
You are just wonderful you are such a generous and talented teacher! ( opaqueness is actually a word or you can say opacity)
Lol Rubin thank you. It’s nice to see you 😊
Your rolling chair is real cool😃😂
Lol thank you 😊
Thanks for the great info. Going to try the satin over the gloss. I've been using a car sponge covered with a stocking. (something I saw Molly do from Molly's Artistry ) has been working for me. Can't master the brush just yet and seem to get brush strokes.
TRETS. I have done it the darling Molly way as well. Just gotta find what works best for you.
Thanks for this nice video demonstration. It looks like you're getting very good results with your technique, but I wanted to add one important bit of info: If you're using Liquitex Orange Bar Varnishes (e.g., High Gloss or Satin), those are *non-removable* varnishes. The isolation coat might help in the sense of getting an even application of varnish, but in this case it doesn't really help with conservation of the painting. You could just as easily add an extra layer of the Liquitex varnish instead of the Golden Isolation Coat. If, instead, you used one of the Golden Polymer UVLS removable varnishes or one of the Liquitex Solvent-based varnishes or other varnishes specifically listed as "removable", then the isolation coat helps with protecting the painting if you need to remove the varnish.
Andrew thank you and YES. The isolation coat aids in giving me a smooth surface for my varnish to be applied. Thank you so much for your comment and suggestions. Nice to meet you Andrew
Ha, I done it wrong again with satin varnish, so I wished I've watched again your video before varnishing.... grrrr I am tired of it...but it is what it is, the painful process of learning... Thank you once again x
Lol yes the process is painful at times. But how good does it feel when you get it right 😊
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Are you back in Florida??? Take two 🤣🤣🤣 that was funny. We’ll have to call Webster on the pronunciation of opaqueness!! Lol. Very informative. Thanks for all you do
Yes back in Florida darling. Here for a few months 😊
What an incredible tutorial! Very informative and full of awesome tips! Love the way you teach. Thank you for taking the time to share your wealth of knowledge with us all Cathleen. I remember your previous video on varnishing. I do have a question tho. Do you rotate your canvas between each coat?
Sometimes Janet. I inspect everything after the first coat is dry. If there are noticeable lines I will flip the canvas. I like to go in the direction of the paint lines. Hope that makes sense 😊
Ima satin girl too
You are such an amazing beautiful and inspiring person. I adore your videos and your art is absolutely stunning 🤩.
I love the “no bra zone”, your roller stool, your sense of humour and everything you do for the artistic community. You help so many people and are such a gem 💎 Thank you for everything that you share. X
Missi Jade I thank you for your smiling words. I thank you as well for joining me here. My Happy Place. Love my stool 😂
Wonderful tutorial, thank you. Do you think you could show us how you sign your artwork on one of your tutorials and what you use?
Kathryn I sign it on the back or side. I use a paint pen on side or a sharpie on the back
I've watched all your videos love them all. Can you wait a few days in between the coats of varnish?
GERI THANK YOU SO MUCH. NICE TO MEET YOU. YES YOU CAN WAIT AS LONG AS YOU WANT. JUST WIPE THE CANVAS DOWN FOR ANY DUST. I WAIT 24 HOURS BETWEEN EACH COAT. SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS 🤪
Good morning Kathleen personally I prefer varnishing my paintings and I agree with using Liquitex because of its quality. Raisin I’m not into it
Excellent resource and video! Thank you! Curious - is the technique you demonstrate for putting on the varnish in this video the same technique you use to put on the isolation coat?
Yes Avondale. Isolation first. Apply a thin coat. Wait 24 hours and then first coat of varnish
Definitely love the stool! AND varnish help. I’m not a shiny girl either. It takes my eye off the art
But like you said, if a clients wants shiny- I’m right there! 😎❣️
One question tho- brushes leave brush strokes- does the varnish self level or do the strokes stay visible? I haven’t braved it yet- only doing spray varnish so far
Karen yes the varnish is self leveling. If you do your first coat and after it dries you see some brush streaks. Turn the canvas and apply a second coat in the opposite direction 😊
P.S. yep, your rolling chair is cool😎
Lol love my chair 🤪
Great video Cathleen! Lots of good information and techniques. Did you do the resin on your painting? I know you don't care for the shine but🙄 it sure made your painting pop. I like your satin finish as well. For me it's what fits with the painting to make it look best. You are looking happy and healthy with your tanned self. If you have to put up with allergies I hope you have a pool to make up for it😁. 😊🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞
Thank you Tera. We do have a pool. Just haven’t used it. Been a bit chilly. Pool season is coming 😊
Your approach to finishing paintings is very much like my own. I’m not into resin. Makes a painting look like a slab of plastic, IMO. I, too, like satin and use the gloss prior to satin. Oh, yeah, try “Opacity.” LOL. It’s easier to say, anyway.
Yes like plastic. There have been a few pieces I have done that do call out for resin. Nice to have options 😊
Have you ever tried BRITE TONE? I love it. It levels well and no brush strokes after 2 maybe 3 coats.
Susie I have not. I will research. Thank you 😊
I got the tip from some other artist. I can't for the life of me remember. I would sure like to give credit.
Wonderful tutorial! I’ve been using the same varnish but with a sponge brush. I’ll be changing to a synthetic brush. Do you find that these inexpensive brushes shed some hairs? I’m afraid they will fall out as I’m varnishing. I do try to remove any loose hairs before I start using it. Thanks Cathleen, love you 💕🥰❤️
Ilene I pull and tug on my synthetic brush before I use them. So far no wondering hairs 😊
