Who am I:
My name is Zach. I'm a second-year medical student in Philadelphia. I make videos about education, productivity, and technology. I love learning and trying new things and often mess up. However, every time I screw up I usually learn something. Whatever I learn I post either on UA-cam or my website 🌐 (zhighley.com/).
I write a weekly newsletter 💌 (zhighley.com/newsletter/) with the best thing I read, watched, and listened to that week.

“Write down in red the things you can’t understand”
Me: *Writes down the whole lecture*
Same here
I dont understand what to even call half the stuff we learn
* writes down all topics and subtopics for state exams * I can´t explain to 5 yrs old anything from what I´ve been studying these past years uh...
I can't even remember what I study after a week or more
same with my filipino, history and science exam
I’m definitely trying this out for my exams in May and June!
Update: I got a 93% on my exam!!
congratulations!!
OMG! congratulations!!
Well done!!
Congratulations!
You prolly dont give a shit but does someone know a tool to log back into an instagram account??
I somehow forgot the login password. I love any assistance you can give me!
How on earth did I end up on this channel? I am learning so much and I'm not even in med school. Thanks for the info. Luvn the videos.
Me too
Me too! I'm not even in school anymore 😂
Me too
I’m about to start
I’m I so in 😂
It took me 5:25 minutes to understand that Rongie's = Wrongies lol
Fortunately for me, I read your comment even before he uttered Rongie.
Omg
5:19 B-)
Haha THANK YOU.
it took me 5:05
MS1 here. Can’t tell you how quickly the “wrongie” method has turned my studying around. In a little over a week I was able to feel more comfortable with the weeks material than I have for any other week the whole semester. Which is saying a lot considering this week was Cranial nerves. Just took a practice final for my course and my scores were significantly higher than I’ve ever seen in practice. Thank you so much!!
Its the end of my first week. I have my first exam in 9 days. Wish Id discovered this channel before 😶 such a good channel
You got this!
@@ZachHighley Please show us how to go around your normal lectures
I'm in high school and you don't understand how much your videos have been helping me 😭😭 the editing, advice and quality is just amazinggg
First year PA student here - super excited to try this out! Have felt like I'm wasting so much time reviewing lecture slides. Thanks so much!
Whaaaat you are so underrated, I love your channel, you deserve way more subs, people are missing out, and I love your humor, “my name is Jeff” that made me comment 😂
haha thanks
This is actually one the most useful and effective study plans out there. Subscribed!
I am so happy to have found this channel. This is gold!!
Thank you - glad to have you!
3rd year psych undergrad here, your channel is currently saving my life and saving me so much time in changing my studying techniques! Thank you sooo much! 🙏
i realize i do this method unconsciously when studying for my anatomy exams ... except i definitely take too much time reading the slides and never do practice tests 😅 totally changing my methods to improve my efficiency !
YOU'RE GOING TO HEAVEN FOR ALL THIS. THANK YOU. CANT SEEM TO EXPRESS HOW HELPFUL YOU ARE
I love listening to your voice. It makes your information inviting. You also have good vibes which makes it easy to just hang and absorb the nuggets your share. Thank you for being you!
8: 24 " if you can measure it's not working for you" I really like how you articulate that bit.
Any method requires self experiment on yourself to see if it is really effective for yourself. And the only way to do it is spend time with it before jumping into conclusion.
Great video. Keep up the great works!!
Honestly, I can't thank you enough for sharing all this content. You made me see there's a more productive and wiser way to learn and memorise without wasting valuable time. Although I knew reading, underlining and re-reading for long periods of time wasn't working at all (I was basically trying to not lose the focus rather than learning and understanding new information), I've kept on doing it for years (why, tho??)
Definitely applying it for my EIR and nursing "oposición" exams. Cheers!
I absolutely love your videos 🔥
I've done a week's prep in a couple of days! It's that powerful
He said understanding trumps memorisation and for a second I was like "why do we need to understand Trump's memorisation???"
Same😂
Same
The quality of your videos and the content is incredible! Thank you!
Thank you so much for sharing your studying method. I’ve been struggling studying in remedial massage. It has been overwhelming especially anatomy, I had never learned anything about human body before in English. I didn’t even know what is the tendon. I felt lost in the first week of semester, I tried hard but I get less outcomes. And I found you on the UA-cam!! I feel much better now. Thank you
Glad I found this channel. I have an exam on the Cranium in 5 days and this video makes sense.
Perhaps the best the video I've seen. Thank you!
Starting my nurse anesthesia program in a few months, and your videos are prepping me well for being better at studying. The book Make It Stick is a huge help as well! Thanks for the videos.
Planning to be a Crna as well. I have a long ways to go.
Thanks a bunch for sharing that Rongie's method. It works magically✨
one of the best channels for new med students! Can't wait to start Fall 2021
Thanks, and yeah get excited! Med school is awesome.
Well, he has a doctors handwriting.
takeaways: study based on the things you don't quite understand
yep!
What if the content is mostly memorizing?
@@megrocks3026 spaced repeitition does the work
I have examination on health failure and diease in nursing within 2 weeks. Thank you for sharing your experience and ideas! ❤️ I’ll be using this method. I will do my best to be very consistent and at the same time take some breaks.
I might as well tell you my examination grade when I get the results! ❤️ May God bless you!
You're my role model Zach!!!
I so needed this, thank you!!!
i liked the technique. First vid i see from ur channel.. so underrated. wish you all the best man!
I just discovered your channel , thank you , you do great videos , and great tips
'the information actually isn't that difficult, its just the sheer quantity, vast amount of information' - this was biggest shock to my system when I started in med school! - Well summarised!
I'm engineering student but your tips help me a lot! Thank you 🙂
I’m a premedical undergrad and I’m so using this from now on and definitely on my MCAT as well ! ;)
This is really good; thank you!!
Its nice that i happen to stumble on your channel. I will definitely try out the rongi method in my future post graduation exams.
Excellent video! I've been kind of doing the "rongie method" indirectly but on Anki. Instead of just writing them down on the paper, i would type the points on Anki and put them under the tag "Difficult/Tricky", each for a specific topic tag as well to take an extra step at keeping it organised.
Good advice you got there, got yourself a new subscriber ;)
That's a great idea! Thanks for the sub.
Do these ways of studying work no matter how a medical school,s cariculuim is structured or if you are attending medical school in America, India, or England?
Very well put together video, thanks mate
Hey, random question: Aussie??
Going to start my med school in a month and the channel is awesome. You deserve much more subs.
Congrats on getting there!
Good luck ✨, you got this 🔥👊
Thanks 😊
love the content brotha!
Thank you!
I am going to try this method. Thanks to you I started doing Anki and it has made a huge difference on recalling material. I used to highlight and write notes and that always took me forever and never really retained the material.
This is so helpful, I'm reall glad i ran into your channel 10 days before my exmas i found this methode quite efficient, thank you very much!!!❤ (also keep going on i love your videos)
Hi Zach, I just discovered your channel and absolutely love your videos!! Watching your days studying and following your own schedules, I’m wondering how you have become such a highly self-motivated and productive person? Could you please share some tips on increasing productivity, managing time and being motivated? Thank you!
Mashallah this is informative and creative
so helpful!
Your editing skills are fire 🙌🏾
Thank you 🙌
Thanks so much for all the advice!!!
I'm an information systems student, I'm definitely going to try this. Thanks!!
love love love your videos! could you do a video on how you plan/organise your week? In terms of food, study, break time, etc? Do you use any apps to plan your week?
Great idea! Thanks, I will definitely work on that one - I mostly use things to keep up with "to-dos" and notability/apple calendar for weekly planning.
Great content. If youre not doing this already just start. Find your own tecnique but active recall is the only way to go
Thank you so much for your videos. It helps me
i love you for this video, my guy
Wow this channel is so informative. Thanks for sharing your effective study techniques and healthy lifestyle future doctor Zach.
I can feel the efforts in the vid. 👏
I felt guilty sacrificing sleeps🤣
Greetings from Turkey! I have a big exam at the end of this season and feel lucky to be the only one from Turkey :) What an inspiring channel!

So helpful!! If you can make a video about your food planning thing it will be great 🙏🏻
Thanks! It was really helpful.
I just found you and subscribed. I especially love this video. Thanks
Thanks for watching
very helpful thank you for the advice and tips :)
Great content, clear and direct talk!
Your videos are high quality and are actually useful and I appreciate that.
I love this idea. I try it because I have the Praxis Exam in 2 weeks, and I need to buckle down. I know personally know spaced repetition works for me and if I can teach a concept. If I can't teach it using my own words, I have to review my notes then I do it again. I am such a visual and a kinesthetic so I see if this technique will help me.
Thank you for sharing !
Thanks a lot buddy!!
How often do you have exams? My school has exams every 2 weeks so I feel it would be difficult to make Rongie’s when I haven’t even had lectures for half of the material
Coincidentally... i have an exam exactly 9 days away! This will be super helpful
Great video! Your advice is excellent! Keep the videos coming.
Thank you! I will
Well I think it's amazing how one knows himself well, I knew right away that the way you study Zach is exactly the method that would work amazingly for me and get my grades up that I won't believe myself , I did active recall and did practic testing for my catch up exam (almost retook the year ) and I saved my year only by scoring very good in tso modules (I had to get 12 points)
To be fair o didn't make anki cards and I just memoried everything but I'd have failed if I didn't parctice SO MANY exams
And I should mention that more than half of the exam were from past exams or have information that weren't even included in the lecture , YEP it was all thanks to test practice and Now I learned my lesson and ready to be a top student
0:57 LOL "my name is Jeff" in a video on study tips? Instant like!
MY DUDE!!! THOSE SHOTS and angles!!!! wow, man! bravo
Thanks dude! Much appreciated
Im also second year medical student from Pakistan. Really like your vedios
Thanks bro ! im planning to be the best !!
Great vid ty sir
Thank you for sharing
zach your videos have helped me so much. I just wanted to know if what do you do when it’s bedtime and you haven’t finished a topic or two that day?
when i get into the medschool of my dreams I'll go back to this vid
me aboutta do this but instead of 9 days its 4 days cause i just found you OUT UGH IM READY FOR A BETTER LIFESTYLE MWAH
🔥🔥🔥
You're so inspiring .
Quick Question: What would you recommend in terms of books and/or online video lectures for first and second year med school curriculum? What books do you use for practice tests? Thank you and keep up the great work.
I'm the guy who relied on overwhelming memorizing since I tried to turn every single piece of info into Notion toggles, which almost equals wasting nearly 88% of the prep session. I scored like shit even after running through that tremendous amount of questions, and not until now did I realize it's because of the lack of REAL testing, which I mistook as merely scanning through information. Now it's 3 weeks out from the biggest exam of my life, and I'll try this out and max it out!
How did you do?
How did it go ?
Your voice can be a great ASMR video for peaceful sleep 😮😮😧
I'm going to use this technique for my upcoming exam which is in 14 days from today.
amazing !
His expression at the first is my expression while I must study
my heart is racing from the urge to try this method lol I feel like it would really work for me and I'm excited hehe
Did it work ??
@@hananeelhm7292 kinda hahah It would work better if I had more time to study, but I have lessons in the morning and in the afternoon, so it doesn't leave me enough time to do all this. But starting 9 days before definetly helps, as well as defining what I need to focus on
Thank you for sharing
Wow man
You're very thorough about everything
My brain takes things it doesn't understand as just bothersome sometimes
And then I go and see them in the exam😫
This is even soo useful for econ as well
man I can't even study 4 topics a day. 6 years in medical school made me so UNBOTHERED haha
I know you're doing anki, but the new first aid has an updated ethics and biostats section. Would recommend finding a PDF or update first aid when you get closer to step.
What filter do or pragram do u apply when you edit your videos.. The vibe is just so cozy and so relaxing
Great video! How do you find yourself balancing time between reviewing lectures/reading through lectures and do Anki? What I first started trying was not even looking at lectures and went straight to making Anki cards. But when I was reviewing Anki cards, I found that I didn't have the "context" that surrounded the cards--ie., I could remember the cards well even after spaced repetition because I couldn't really put those pieces of info together into a larger "story" or framework. Did you feel like this as well?
Thanks, I never reread lectures seriously because it’s been shown to be ineffective.
I’m releasing a video this Friday on exactly what I do but you really want to make sure you get an understanding before making the cards. That understanding, for me, comes from a third party video like boards and beyond or sketchy, then I READ over the individual cards in the Anki browser to make sure I understand them, then I start going through the cards (you can check out my normal daily study routine here: ua-cam.com/video/vj4lh9RCFzw/v-deo.html)
I will usually do the above the day before the lecture, then when I show up to the lecture I have a good idea of what’s going on and just sit and watch. I don’t take notes or anything. I may make a flashcard or two on something that seems like a big picture idea I should understand.
If when you are reviewing the cards you realize you have lost the big picture idea stop, google/textbook/lecture whatever it is you are doing, then in your head try and imagine you were explaining that material to a naive friend, then add that explanation to the “extra” section, or somewhere that pops up after you answer the card, if the Anki card. Also, this is my regular study “plan.” As you saw in the video above my exam review is just filling in those gaps from the regular semester, but, really, if you study consistently with Anki/understanding you shouldn’t have that many Rongies.
Have you made a video on how to make good flashcards/Anki cards?
Hi. I was wondering if you can do a video on “ How to study for entrance exams”. There is so much material to cover and books to study from. The Broad range makes it difficult to know what the exam questions will cover. Time is precious so any tips is appreciated!
Hi Zach, thanks for the video! Future M2 here and relatively new to your channel. What do you suggest for someone that has exams roughly every 2 weeks and the material normally wraps up a day or two before the exam (since the 9 day method seems to be more for a larger block of material)? Also, do you use Zanki/ Anking when doing your Anki review or does your class have pre-made decks from past students in your classes? I have used pre-made decks from past students for M1 year but there don't seem to be as many available for the M2 classes and I am trying to go into the next year with a solid plan. Thanks!
How do you catch yourself from not defaulting to memorizing in anki since it’s so easy to make cards with image occlusion and actually prioritize understanding?
be conscious about it
late response, but ask yourself: "why does this operate the way it does?". it's a simple question, but if you find that you're at a lost to explain why something is the way it is, and you're just regurgitating the definition, then you're only memorizing. also, ask yourself: "how does (a) relate to (b)?". once again, a simple question; but if you're revising a topic and you can only repeat definitions and concepts, but not how they relate to one another, then you're memorizing.
mind mapping after you've finished revising is a quick way to test if you understand how concepts relate to one another. when i'm finished looking over cards and notes, i pull out some scrap paper, and in my own words, try to relate my understanding of each term to one another. if i find myself lost, then i know i don't understand the topic. this might not work for everyone, but it works for me, hope this helps!
This is EXACTLY the method i do (rongie)
Lets say whenever i assist a course in univ i write the things that i didn't get on a white paper and restudy them when i get home
I also keep repeating them to anyone i know so i wouldn't forget about them and it's actually a really goood method
Thank u for sharing it ✌️
Hi! I'm a Japanese acupuncture student!
Your teaching is wonderful and I refer to it.
I didn‘t realize that I actually already did this - the only difference is that I marked the topics that I didn’t understand with red post its xD
