    Hey Hazel, fellow Dublin gal here. I'm moving to London to study film making in a few months in uni. I just wanted to say thank you as a large part of my love of cinema stems from you and people like you on youtube. 4 years ago at age 14 I thought everyone liked films and movies and the cinema as much as I did, or maybe I was just a little nerdy. But not, like, TOO nerdy. God no. But apparently not, apparently watching short films and behind the scenes videos on youtube for hours on end was a sign of something bigger. I'm itching to start writing, filming, editing, making proper films. Maybe one day I'll even go to Cannes. But it will always have started here. so thanks. (ironically i don't have much of a way with words)
    *googles how to get invited to the Cannes Film Festival*

    The interesting thing about the tech industry is that it wasn't always this way. Many of the first computer programmers were women. It was originally seen as a sort of secretarial job, but when the field began to gain more importance (and higher salaries) the women were pushed out and discouraged from pursuing jobs in computer science and technology. Yet people still try to argue the gender discrepancy is somehow due to women being innately worse at it!

    Your vlogs are potentially my favourite on this crazy platform and i love that you essentially scripted parts of it and yet it still feels natural and completely lovely to watch (i don't know if you did but based on the start it seems like you may have). Also, something i think is important to note is that for me, seeing you, a female writer, director, actress and badass being invited to Cannes (and looking like an absolute vision while there btw) is inspiring. I didn't think about a career in film and the thing i've loved since i was 3 until i started watching your videos and saw that i could get there as a young woman. Now i've started a Media degree at Uni with the full intention of completing a masters in film production and screenwriting and landed my dream internship with an international film festival. If you ever wonder if this little UA-cam thing is worthwhile, i can assure you, I am not an enigma, and on behalf of all the girls who've been inspired and encouraged - thank you Miss Hayes xx

    I actually went through my first year at university studying cinematography and photography this year. I was supposed to study languages, because I felt like this little dream of mine to be able to work in the cinema industry was not achievable in any way. But, I flipped the tables over at the last minute and here I am now, preparing for my second year. Sure, I'm not that comfortable yet, I'm still kind of afraid that this industry doesn't have a place for me, that I am not ready yet, but still I'm going to try my best and hopefully succeed. If I fail, I can always tell myself that I tried and didn't just expect things to happen. You inspires me so much, Hazel, as well as many other filmmakers here on UA-cam. I pushed through this year thanks to your and these creators' videos and I am so fucking grateful. Even used 'Septem' in my very first cinema analysis (btw my teacher was very surprised when I asked him to watch it to and actually loved your short movie). ANYWAY this is a little ramble but I'm feeling emotional (forgive me it's 1 am here in France, a lil bit late) and I loved this video and felt like talking a little bit. Love you, keep up being your amazing self. Xoxo !

      Hey fellow uni student here -- it took me till second semester second year to feel fully comfortable in my course and not like I was a fish out of water ! We live in a world where the job market is changing constantly and when we are paying so much for course fees and living costs we might as well do something that we love. One of my RA's in first year told me when I was getting anxious about my course that we should think about Uni as the continuation of learning because we enjoy it and we want to specialise our knowledge towards that field rather than focusing on finding work....I am doing Sociology and I have family that tell me I should do law because I have a better chance of getting work.... I have gotten very good at replying "well in New Zealand only one out of six law graduates get work as lawyers." I dont know what the film/languages equivalent is. Anyway.... Seeing as we are going to be in so much debt... We might as well do something we find interesting (Note: I hope this make sense and reads okay... its 1:38 am and I dont have my glasses on... everything is tad blurry)

    Thank you Hazel ❤️
    I'm a woman aspiring to be in the film industry, my sister is a woman aspiring to be in tech. She's one of 3 girls in class, I'm the codirector assumed to be not, just because I'm no man. You just hit pin point with this one. But I gotta say, in those directory conversations where the men listened to one of them instead of me it was So rewarding to push through and talk until I got the respect and authority the guys were automatically given. Felt like a real victory, no matter how tiny ;)
    Also I've been thinking about male privilege a lot lately and having these conversations with a bunch of people, some supportive of women, some not so much and I've come to the nugget (to borrow a phrase) that privilege (all privilege) is just assumed integrity. Not sure why I felt I had to mention that... maybe I just feel like we should level the playing field by seeing everyone as outright equally valuable?
    Anyway great video! Thank you for continually bringing up the topic. It's important to hear.

    Loved this, Hazel! I was wondering - have you/do you experience any internalized misogyny (i.e. do you struggle with feeling adequate because we live in a society that constantly pushes the idea that women aren't filmmakers)? I just graduated with a degree in international relations, which now has many more women than it did in the past, but my specialization (national security & foreign policy) is still very male-dominated, especially at the school I went to. I've often felt unqualified to speak on a certain subject, or assume men in my classes know more than I do. I've also been surprised when I do find women professors who are experts in the field, and it sucks that it's such a surprise.

  • @ClareOlivia
    @ClareOlivia 6 років тому

    Great video. I work in HR in the tech industry and trust me it's not easy. Even trying to get myself into a position to make a real impact is hard enough let alone lifting my employees up to their own position of empowerment. Especially in tech, and I imagine somewhat in the entertainment industry, the issue is the lack of skills and knowledge amongst any group other than white male. Programming and engineering have always traditionally been a male dominated industry so our key goals should be to continue pushing women and minorities into programmes that help build skills in the positions we need more diversity in (Women who code for example). You spoke about tech companies just implementing a quota, which, can be tricky because sometimes people are promoted without the necessary skills and experience leading to only more issues. It's an uphill battle, still, and we have a long way to go but I hope, with all the attention it's been getting recently, diversity will continue to improve in every industry. One day, finger's crossed, there won't be a need for diversity quotas at all.
