I have lived in Sri Lanka for 20 years. I would take issue with you about the Sri Lankan press. There has always been very strong criticism of the government and politicians in general.

The reason for the collapse is Rajapaksas were too focused on keeping the power more than building the country. They were great in marketing but cluless in ecconomics and finance. Since the war ended they had a wonderful opportunity to be like the Kings of Sri Lanka but they made all wrong investments thinking the general population is stupid by investing heavy in infrustucture projects like beautiful parks, roads buildings etc on high interest rates without understanding the Return on those assets without thinking of the consequences of the rolling debt etc. Also to be in power they went in the old method by making money from curruption themselves especially Mahinda Basil and Namal as they thought they can always buy votes for money and that strategy worked. Also for this strategy to work they had to turn a blind eye to their close set of supporters who were as currupt or worse than them who also stole billions from the ecconomy. This resulted in a vicious cycle of nepotism and financial mismanagement like a rolling ice ball. Basically they were playing the debt rolling game lying to the people of the actual situation of the country until covid came. That was the point their game got exposed cos the govt was following an unsustainable ecconomic policy that couldnt sustain without the tourism and foreign remittances and there was no plan B. Gotabaya got caught in the middle of all all due to his political immaturity but the main culprits are Basil Rajapaksa, PB Jayasundara and Ajith Nivaad Cabraal who gave all the ill advice to Gotabaya to not to goto IMF in 2020. If they had done that then this problem would have never come into this situation. But its good that it didnt happen cos of that happened we would have gone in the same dirty system recycle of more debt. But now its a total system reboot which is there for good or for bad but it was neccesary for the system to breakchains at one point. Now ot has happened, lets hope SL grab this opportunity to break that old currupt cycle and move into a more open transparent curruption fearing culture from future administrations due to the fear of the wrath of the public

Can we take a moment to heartily appreciate the Sri Lankan society. Its unbelievable to see an apparently leaderless mob behaving so highly civilized. I'm amazed to the core, and wondering what would happen if this would be some other Asian country 😱😱😱 Your society, regardless your corrupt leadership, dear Sri Lankan, is worth preserving; particularly in the present times of chaos and selfishness around the globe. I see all over the television people visiting Presidential palace in excitement, but not in frenzy. There maybe certain little disorderly action, but mostly its peaceful. In a country where people are starving, its surprising to see them just eating and preparing, only little snatching of food. Here people found 17 million rupees in Presidential palace and handed over to police. 👏👏👏👏👏 Remember, how American acted last year, when they vandalized their White House????I can go on in praise, because as a student of history I know the worth of seeing such civil people still neighboring around. I pray in earnest that you people very soon find true leader among yourself to run your beautiful country. And also I request the world community to come forward to help Sri Lankan people from this sad crisis. Love from India 🙏🙏🙏🙏🌷
I have read about the storming of the Bastille on 14th July 1789 in Paris to start the French revolution. Sri Lankans who stormed the presidential palace recreated the storming of the Bastille in the 21st century. Never take the hungry and angry masses for granted.

Some may have wriggled out of the mess while some may have gone down the hill.
I don’t understand, you have spoken about this organic agriculture issue extensively on a previous program but this time seems like you’ve not heard of it before.
There is one omission. In this case it was not one dictator, but a greedy, self centred dictatorial clan, who thought money and power was everything. After defeating the Tamil Tigers, Mahinda could have been the greatest leader of all time in SL history. But instead of building a prosperous country for all, he was driven by greed, self interest and a narrow vision that the country belonged to Sinhala Buddhists aided by the Buddhist priests. I fear that India, which now is one of the most important countries in the world could go the same way if it chooses to go the narrow religious narrative instead of an all inclusive initiative that embraces its diversity. United we stand, divided we fall. Though not an Indian I love and respect this type of journalism. People can make up their mind. Just continue to give an unbiased narrative. Thank you for your service
@@jyatimali2033 I understand. However we forget that all religions were invented to make the human better beings like the creator. To be honest I never had Sri Lanka on my mind until recently when I watched a travel vlog from a channel I follow and.... it didn't end on a positive note and that guy had to leave. Thanks for making the country's economic issues very clear and understandable.
Can you share vlog channel link

I expected this fertilizer ban thing to be the final reason
That is the most ridiculous decision one can take ,this reason being the cause behind all the mess sounds absurd as well as makes a lot of sense.
Hm
not at all.. reason is greedy and lazy voters who love everything free without work... they are happy when they got fuel for 50 when indian are getting 100
Only two problems : High corruption(especially selling of to Chinese) and hit taken by tourism sector due to covid. All the other reasons are
Govt policy to convert to organic farming, it should have been gradual.... the tea productions suffered.
Not exactly. There was some other Bad decisions as well which actually broke the Camels back.
1. The Organic Farming Law.
2. Subsidies for vote. This freebie culture actually made it go from bad to worse real fast.
@@hpremjit yes due to that we have to import rice..it completely destroyed agriculture😥😥
@@MrVijay0611 This case should be good example for indian states like punjab or west bengal which gives too much freebies and not attract invstments.
What about the civil war effects funded by America and India? Bottom line neoliberal policies.
Kudos to you. We got to know first the seriousness of what is going in Sri Lanka from you
Sirji, please restrict your videos to 16 mins, then you will be able to reduce duplicity, and unnecessary info/explaination.
Some of us play this while doing house cleaning or having lunch, the length is perfect. So..stfu.
SriLankan Dynastic Rulers / Dictators took Billions of Chinese Loans for unviable and unsustainable projects without any transparency.
Severe corruption in various projects by Dictators brought current situation in Sri Lanka
Thank you for repeating the most popular story from Sri Lanka that most of us already know about.
Dear SG can you please do a Cut the Clutter mentioning the merits and demerits of demonetization
Well explained...thanx Sekharji.
Excellent. I enjoyed it. And learnt a lot!
Dear Shekhar Sir, Wion talked about this several months back. But, der aae durust aae.
Thanks for doing a video on Sri Lanka.
Such a hearty comment! Thank you
True. People brought their families too. Looks like some picnic or carnival
Thank you for the beautiful comment ❤️
Seriously?
Hard fact from Indian context: not concerned that much until Chinese incursion takes place.
Brilliant inputs by SG well in advance.
Very good analysis and informative too 🙏🙏👏👌 Rajapaksa is Srilanka's Mohammad Bin Togluk .
Shekhar thank you for you efforts...
I have read about the storming of the Bastille on 14th July 1789 in Paris to start the French revolution. Sri Lankans who stormed the presidential palace recreated the storming of the Bastille in the 21st century. Never take the hungry and angry masses for granted.
The Bastille Prison held zero prison inmates on that occasion.
@@t5ruxlee210 Presidential palace in Colombo too held zero president when it was stormed 😂
If the hypothesis about L/C is true why did they not do forward contracts? I doubt your explanation
Turning to organic farming overnight is disaster - a high school student in Sri Lanka knows this fact. However, an 'ex-soldier turned Head of State' by war victory, lost his head with power and arrogance that was brought in!!
When SG reposts an older cut the clutter for an ongoing problem should we take it as that SG has nothing new to say about it?
I am really surprised that Indian government has decided to encourage organic farming.
Organic produce will fetch more price. However it should be done slowly.
Was wondering why the print isn't talking about this crisis
Uneconomic spending (Freebie),
Fat Govt Sallery and pension,
Large military budget,
Less infrastructure spending,
Less support to wealth creators etc.
Interesting not to see the import car ad this time
Why no mention of China? Greed of the dictator should also be highlighted.

1 dollor = 363 SL rupees
we afraid that it will hit 500 rupee for 1 USD
Full of "retrospective" wisdom!
Had it not been for the IT sector.. India would also have gone the same way as Lanka.
(icici chairman)
IT sector is not forever it's touching the endgame soon... Nigerians and BDs are hitting the market hard and Indian kids not gonna work for 4 - 5 lpa very long now. even freshers are expecting 8 lpa. Outsourcing won't be profitable for market giants
There should be one cut the clutter about recession that may happen or is happening currently
??????????? It's an old video...why????????????????
It is relevant
With help from the Chinese, Gotabaya Rajapaksha has fled Sri Lanka and left it in shambles.
I do feel that you have to SHORTEN your presentation to the vitals of the subject so that more people will see till the end-I think 15-20 minutes is the IDEAL.You could have given a passing reference of the countries who are waiting to go bankrupt.
Rajpaksha family was a hero when they defeated the LTTE and ended the long running civil war between Sinhalas and Tamils. Now they have become villains because they badly mismanaged the economy. Time changes everything.
Am I having a dejavu or has this been published before?
I fully agree with your view.
Your analysis in Sri Lanka is fair. Yes. Sri Lanka government is bankrupt but people's moral is very high.
Sri Lanka Organic farming = Demonetisation in India. Can you see the parallels. 🙂.
Nope
@@TheBakor Bhakt can never be rational.
Indian economy recovered from the demonisation impact. But Sri lank Organic farming policy led to the current dire state. So both are not comparable. Hence no parallels.

Sir you have not mentioned anything on china blunder, contributing to Srilanka situation. Also, is India on the path to dictatorship due to weak opposition?
india booted out such corrupt dynasty in 2014.(ya few states still ruling with such dynasty ) .what you assume is your wet dream as india becoming like srilanka..
One of the best from SG.
I was waiting for this video
If possible please talk about - the path they can take to take a way out of this mess. It would be nice if you can sight examples from the past that when tiny countries like srilanka found themselves in a similar predicament. Some may have wriggled out of the mess while some may have gone down the hill.
I don’t understand, you have spoken about this organic agriculture issue extensively on a previous program but this time seems like you’ve not heard of it before.
Blinkit has copied your shows intro/ending music.
As long as hindus are majority and BJP in the power, India wont go the srilankan way for sure. Dont worry ! Besides India is not china's friends
@@jyatimali2033 I understand. However we forget that all religions were invented to make the human better beings like the creator. Unfortunately we have let the religious leaders to divert our attention and turn us against each other instead. We will continue in this direction to our own destruction. Sad!
Good comment
It is so heartbreaking to see the condition of SL. It has a developed human capital, talented people and yet incompetent political leadership. This neighbor of India's should have been the beacon of hope ... I think there is something very wrong with the neighborhood.
The political side of South Asia is under-developed, and that is saying it mildly. It is difficult to build political culture and accountability under the extremes of nationalism in the region.
Excellent analysis
These points might be new for you but we already knew all these factors before you covered it.
I didn't.
It wud have been better if he had mentioned what's future of this ?
True. Democracy and Dictatorship are not the opposite of each other. You can in fact elect a dictator.
Actually not impressed(this is rare) by the word used discovery as I remember this cause of organic farming leading to economic crisis in Sri Lanka was well mentioned in one of the studyIQ channel video long ago.
Yes this cause was out long ago but shekhar has a bias against china and used to blame china for the collapse of SL. Telling the Mao story here shows how he will always try to tie a negative china angle even though that was 70 years ago and not relevant to SL.
Correction - one dollar 💲 is Srilankan rupees 380/- approx at the moment.
Sir. You must speak about the emergency in Andhra and the poor economic health in our state. You should bring to light this economic crime right in front of our eyes.
Sir - Plz tell us the story of history of secession demands by India's Tamil Nadu

Hi Abhimanyu, thanks for your feedback.
Why Sri Lanka fell was having the wrong people at the wrong places . Our reserves were drained because we had a charted accountant as Central Bank governor in place of an economist who was yes man . Wasted the reserves trying to artificially hold the usd
You know what SG ji even old episodes always feels like the new ones.
About six months ago you already did an episode on organic farming ruining Sri Lanka economy. Don't you remember? That point was covered only in CTC. Rest said covid is the reason for the economic problem. Even before all these analysis came you did an episode on organic farming and economic ruin. Surprised you have forgotten that!!! Check CTC 937.
SG Sir, Europe is generally politically correct? What are you talking about. Europe in deep trouble, selling half their industries to Chinese.
Where did u find this shithole news that Europe is selling their industries????.....Europe major industries are service based, u don't sell them....it's Serbia(former Soviet satellite state) who are being cosy with the Chinese and Serbia is not a big player nor they have much of a influence in Europe. Sorry mate but ur source is bullshit
