U are f’ing awesome man!! And it’s not your drumming (which is too awesome to even talk about btw), it’s your heart. U genuinely care about our drumming and that is what makes u great!! Thanks brother
I LOVE your reason for the switch to Vic Firth! Vic Firth’s rudiment lessons by John Wooton turned me onto his book “Rudimental Remedies”, which I wish existed when I was starting out.
Mike, hands down; You are not just an amazing drummer but an epic teacher! You are so charismatic and fun to watch. Thank you for your videos and your influence on many drummers around the world. Have a great day, greetings from Germany
Hey Mike, your positive energy is a treasure to the drum community as always! You're right the transition from 32nds to 16th triplets is tough. After working slowly I then put it with an upbeat hi hat. Next I've tried singles on the toms(r.h. floor tom l.h. rack tom). This is a great exercise! My groove bell arrived and I love it!!! Its exactly what I've looked for in a cowbell. Thank you!!!
Your lesson are great Mike! I've been practicing this for 3-4 weeks now. Slowly getting comfortable and increasing the speed. My breaking point is around 76--80bpm now. Tough part for me is playing clean near my breaking point and staying relaxed and not tensing up. Also, keeping a decent technique. I'm clearly not the fastest out there. I've been struggling with these issues in all my drumming years. I feel this exercise might get me to another level. Thank you for your teaching dedication! :)
Your teaching method is something else 🤗 Always making the theory behind stuff so clear. The excercise....won't happen to me anytime soon. After 33 years of drumming, rudiments are, and have been hands down the hardest things to try to learn.
This is great to add to my warm-up routine. I currently do something in this ballpark, but it's all 16th notes, with 2 bars of 6 stroke roll, followed by one paradiddle, so its RllrrL RllrrL Rlrr. After one time through, you start the same sticking with the left hand.
Love this lesson. I´ve seen it before, saved it and gave it a try today! The hardest part for me is definitely the change to the 16th note triplets with the left hand. I love these kind of exercises though, because I really feel the improvement of my weaker left hand! Thank you Mike for all your great lessons. Once again, well done mate
Great lesson! Keeping it smooth and relaxed is quite a challenge. What about applying crossovers to the exercise? I mean, playing all the right hand accents on a left side drum, and all the left hand accents on a right side drum. Congratulations on that Vic Firth drumstick!
You're certainly one of the best drummers on youtube, (and there are plenty of great ones) but what really puts you in the number one spot for me is how fun and motivating you and your videos are and how useful I've found your exercises to be. I've played for nearly 30 years, mainly Grindcore/ Death metal with blastbeats and fast double bass stuff and such , but up til about five years or so I'd done no more than maybe 100 hours of practice outside the rehearsal room and was starting to feel quite a bit of wear on the body after practice, (which had also become less regular with kids and work and all that other adult stuff..: ) Anyhow, The last couple of years I've been practicing quite a bit at home on the pad and it has helped me a lot keeping up my hand speed and avoiding tension and all the other negative things that comes from infrequent practice and overexhaustion that can easily happen when you're not so young anymore but still a diehard metalhead.. I've learned loads from you for the last couple of years, and I am very grateful. You're an awesome guy Mike, thanks a lot.
I’m relegated to just my practice pad and Hardimons out in my garage these days. So this one was especially well received. I appreciate you, your talent and what you are providing us all. Regards bro.
Just discovered you/your channel, and I literally love you. You have the exact same kind of energy/vibe as me and I love it so much, I'm here yelling out loud at my screen out of enthusiasm and laughing at your phenomenal drummer onomatopoeia abilities (I love how every drummer mimics drum sounds in their own way, but yours are so recognisable, the "sagudugudugu sagudugudugu" is beautiful hahahah) I'm so into your energy that I'm making this my primary goal, I will practice this until I can pull it off at 100bpm! I'm far from a bad drummer but I'm heeeeck out of practice. I had a sudden urge to play the pad again and happened across this video and I love this rudiment so much! I wanna make you proud and get up to speed! At the moment I can do 50bpm comfortably, but any faster is a real strain on my ol' left hand/arm so I really gotta work on getting that equilibrium back between both hands/arms. That's one thing I never put enough hours into, but this exercise is literally perfect to try bring ol' leftie up to the same level as righty! God literally if my left was as good as my right I would actually be twice the drummer I am today, it's NUTS the difference between my two hands. My right can blast beat easy cheese on toast, whereas my left arm fully seizes up even at half the speed my right can go. But that changes, and it starts today, here and now! Really happy I discovered your channel, I'm pumped to explore your other videos! :D
Dude, you’re easily one of the best drummers in the world! Ive been watching you on UA-cam for over 10 years and recently joined up to MikesLessons. I can honestly say the courses are the best drum education I’ve ever experienced. The content is well thought out and structured, plus the a la cart purchase options are much appreciated and very reasonable - you probably charge too little as I’ve found the 6 courses I’ve bought worth every penny! Your charisma, positive attitude and discussion of the mental side of learning drums is amazing! I’m pumped you’re reaping the rewards of all the hard work you’ve put into your drumming and building a career as an educator! Thanks for everything Mike! Chip Sydney, Australia
I used every stick on the planet 4 years but I've been playing Vic Firth for the past maybe five years right now I'm using Steve gadd signature pretty good thank you for the video Mike
Most excellent and inspiring, Mike. I actually opened up a can of worms by flamming the beginning of each paradiddlediddle and paradiddle. Also, you got me into checking out that Reflexx practice pad!
Mike you’re top 100 for sure and teaching you’re top 3 you’re are phenomenal it’s cool you’re humble but I really wish I had you growing up I have your lessons now which is amazing but your lesson would’ve of saved me years of just building practice things
Mike! New to your video studio. I've had 4 Weims, and currently have a Weim/ Lab mix. I love the breed. Great to see your beauty strolling around! I'm checking you out- so far, looks great. Thanks!
This officially is now my go to warmup licks!! I just realized that I’ve never played Paradiddlediddle in 32nd notes. I could get through the whole bar landing on the 1 just fine until I start counting and when it gets to the 32nd notes part, I have no idea what goes where and things falls apart. #embracethesuck
i know im randomly asking but does someone know of a way to get back into an instagram account..? I was dumb lost the login password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me!
Thanks very much for this - I'm a groove drummer trying to figure out how to get some chops, and instinctively this feels like it's the "chop-builder" that I need. I'm good for about 75 BPM now, and rising. I appreciate the challenge to us "go and figure out how to put this on the kit". But I would LOVE to see you put this on the kit Mike! That would just be the missing link for me right now..... Thanks again for a great lesson
For me, transitioning between note values has always been an issue. I have great raw speed but struggle with going from like 16th trips to 32nds. This year and 2020 i plan on developing those abilities as best I can, especially on my feet; i play alot of double bass and just love when all the fast guys have that quick burst of speed on their feet and im like how the HELL did they do that lmao. Anyway, great lesson mike, like always :)
Weird thing is i found the subdivision easier at quicker tempos. Guess it goes back to what they say, playing slower can be tougher at times. Side question, when working on something like this do you have to every once in awhile go off on the kit a bit and get the brain to reset? Man it's tough for me to just plug away at one lick for long periods of time. Something I need to work on for sure.
Hey Mike, long time subscriber now, never really commented... But, and of course I don't know what you feed you beautiful dog, but for me to make the breath (and farts) smell a heck of a lot better, I started cooking for my dog. Just cooked rice, minced meat (also cooked) and string beans and baby carrots (both raw), and you are serving your dog way better food than this industrial canned stuff, and it makes the breath way better. Just a thought, but do some research on it, because you know, we should give our pets the best life possible ;)
The Ape Machine Thanks so much for caring brother. I was totally kidding about her breath. She has a meal delivery service that brings her fresh food each week, just veggies and meat mixed with brown rice.
Thanks Mike for sharing this exercise! I just got a Reflexx pad recently and have been working on the non rebound side, it's great feels like a pillow and work on the wrist and fingers. Would you make a video or recommend any exercise for the rebound side on the Reflexx pad?? Many thanks! Cheers!!
Thanks for the lesson and inspiration. I am slowly getting myself back in shape after a long sabbatical from semi-pro playing. Not sure if you are sponsored by your practice pad maker but the clarity for the ghosted notes it not too clear for me. I have a pretty small computer so it could be my speakers for sure but it also produces a pretty low and muffled attack. Seems saaweet for practice tho. Thanks again and keep well.
Sweet!!!! As always!!!! Pls can Iask u something? When u do faster tempo did u use push push technique? Ur ghost notes are just amazing!!! Thanks beforehand!!!
When you say 16th notes vs 32nd note, you are playing in triplets (which might even give you the idea to use this exercise with 16th notes in 4v4 measure for the first 2 paradiddle-diddles and then do the rest 2, plus the single paradiddle at the end in triplets) which will be confusing to 80% of your audience. I am sure you know the difference between triplets and regular 16th notes yourself, its for those who don't.
Ah man, I fell like you were so close to watching my full explanation before you started typing, LOL! All good, try watching one more time. You got this Ruslan :)

Awe man, thank you so so much. I don't take comments like that for granted :)
Great biscuit Mike!!! Exercises that flip your hands halfway through are the way to go!
I'm retired AND quarantining. Your excellent lessons and exceptional enthusiasm are making it painless to go back to basics!
