Last week, i flew a 3” Tanq, did what i thought would be a power loop, and somehow smacked full throttle into the ground. Two props just exploded, but no other damage; replaced props flew great. So i know the feeling of “thinking you did it this time”, and got lucky. 😊 great video; enjoy your narratives while flying; great job.
I've ordered the analog one, my first open prop after flying my Cetus X and Air65 for a month. Planned on building my first 3", but this looks like exactly what I'd build (except with the Quadmulla Siren F3 Split frame. Started flying FPV 14th September after 130 hours in the sims and I have some videos up if anyone cares. I'll add a reply to this when I receive my Ikon 3 from AvionRC as to what the process was like and if I have any problems 👍
@@NickBurnsFPV I've had my Ikon 3 for nearly a month now, but I only managed to get a solid flight session last weekend. Let me explain, as quick as I can, from the beginning. (TLDR, AvionRC were helpful, drone was fine and I have no reservations about buying from them again) I ordered the Ikon 3 from the website and signed up for an AvionRC account. I checked my orders under my account and nothing was there. I wasn't particularly worried because I had the email confirmations from both Paypal and AvionRC, but I emailed support anyway. They replied pretty quickly and said they weren't sure why it wasn't showing on my account, but that it had already shipped. They also said they would send the tracking number when they get it, which they did. Shipping was pretty quick to the UK and from a UK RC parts store I picked up some batteries, a charger and a ViFly Short Saver, just in case, more on that later. The drone arrived and it was packaged well, but when I cut the bag that the drone was in the smell was awful! This is my first non-whoop drone, so I'm not sure if it was the smell of flux or something like that, but it wasn't pleasant. I left the drone out for a while and the smell went in a day or two so no biggie. I plugged in the short saver, then a battery and pressed the power button … the red light immediately came on and drone didn't power up. I thought maybe the drone pulls more than 1A so put it on the 2A setting and it did the same thing. I didn't want to risk just plugging in a battery and frying my first "proper" drone, so I emailed support back again (not that I didn't trust them, I just wanted to be safe). The same person replied promptly saying they were the one that does the inspection for all the bind and fly models and that they were 100% certain I could just plug in a battery. They reassured me saying they had to plug a battery in to flash all four ESCs and check the camera was all working correctly, without the battery they wouldn't have been able to do that. I plugged in the battery again on it's own and sure enough it powered up fine with no magic smoke. I plugged the drone into my computer to add my rates, configure the OSD and change the VTX to R8 and took the drone out to the garden to fly. Set the DVR recording and took off, flying around the tree in the centre, just like I always do, and the video immediately went black and white and rolling. Ended up crashing because I wasn't expecting it, just into the grass thankfully, so I went and picked it up. Took off again and hovered just in front of me and the video seemed fine, but at certain points it did the same thing black and white rolling static. Essentially it was unflyable. I spent the next week trying different VTX power settings and bands and channels to no avail. Figured it must be my antennas, but I wanted some input, so searched the internet for ages not finding much and was going to ask on reddit. I checked the footage from my goggles just before making the post, with the intention of adding a clip to demonstrate the issue, only to find that the DVR was perfectly clean! Weird right! Made the post anyway and only one person was helpful, also confused by the clean DVR but suggested some things to try, and I ended up buying a new circular polarised antenna for my goggles, to replace the linear that was on it and match the Rush Cherry. The video still had the same issue, so I bought a linear for the drone, and still had the same issue. Thought I would email AvionRC again to get their input on the issue and the same person replied again, they had a friend who had the same goggles and had the same issue. They tried their goggles that had an ImmersionRC Rapidfire module and the issue wasn't there. They suggested I try a friend's goggles, but I have no FPV friends. I was resolved to having to buy a new set of goggles, presuming that diversity would fix the issue, but being the indecisive person I am, I couldn't decide what I wanted. Luckily, though, I ended up stumbling across a reddit post that I hadn't during my many hours searching this problem, and the OP had the exact same issue with the exact same goggles I did, the BetaFPV V03s. An electrical engineer had commented on that post with the cause of the problem and could also replicate it. In basic terms, the issue is that some cameras have a too high of a contrast ratio for the goggles to render, and using PAL makes the situation worse. I switched the goggles to NTSC and reduced the contrast a bit using the OSD baord that came with the camera (that AvionRC included in the package, thanks) and then went out to fly. The issue was gone! So I charged all my batteries up and went to the field to let the drone loose! Long story short, the drone is great and AvionRC support was helpful when I contacted them. It was a learning experience, which is good because I've only been flying for two months now! 😁
@HnyBadgr Yeah, I got it months ago and I wrote one heck of a reply to this, but I must not have hit send 😭 I don't have time right now, but I'll write it again at some point. Long story short the drone is just as Nick described and AvionRC were very helpful 👍
I see my long-ass reply in my history on this post, so I wonder whether it's got flagged and is held for review because it's so long. @NickBurnsFPV you don't happen to have one of my comments on this video "held for review" in your dashboard do you by any chance?
Quick tip: the 850mAh from BetaFPV are 100g, but the 850mAh from GNB (the same yellow ones with flowers as the 650mAh from the video) are 88g. So that'd make the quad 240g.
This is a ton of fun to fly. I posted pictures of it too. It’s very fast 😅. They are incredibly awesome to work with, shop with, Eddie is my person 💪. This thing was sent from China this past Monday and at my house in the USA Wed that same week! It’s very impressive they take advice from reviewers and improve the product before the public gets it. Happy you recommended them as it’s been awesome.
@Nick I just tried the updated pid tune you showed and I like that a lot more, thank you! Btw, I asked about walksnail and they aren’t using moonlight (at least not a week ago). Lastly, I sanded away some of my front tpu near the camera so I could lower the camera angle. One thing I told them was prop screws. They send you the ones that came with the motors but an extra would be nice :). That was the only spare I saw missing. Have a great weekend dude.
I bought a used Avant Nexa 4" with Vista Nebula Pro and Flywoo F745 40A AIO, it was my first digital. Such a beast on 6s with IFlight 2205 2300kv motors. Not light, but solid and it flies really nice. I like the no prop in view on the Ikon 3. Running a Vista vs 03 should be a bit lighter too. I don't have an 03 quad ...yet. Nice review Nick!
I bought the Ikon 2.5 ready to fly kit without the 03 and fit in a hdzero v2 freestyle in it. Overall, the quad flys perferfectly and the ordering process was easy. 10/10 Ill be recommending the Ikon series to anyone looking for a new quad.
I have purchased 2 of their bnf quads. They modified the frame so I could mount a hdzero whoop to in the rear of the Nexus 3.5. I have an Avio 3” also and they both are great flyers and under 250 grams with 4S 850 Tatuu XT30.
Hi Nick, great review. Thanks for the other pid. I bought the Ikon 3, without the o3 about 2 weeks ago, received it this week by UPS in Canada. Ordering and shipping went fine. Saved a bit on customs as I asked them to put a 100$ value 😉.
Great review as always, Nick! I appreciate all the info and the honesty with which it’s shared. I always come here when I want the truth about a quadcopter and it’s performance
That weight doesn't seem bad to me considering the changeable arms and motor protectors. My crux35 converted to a 3" 03 top mount weighs 146g dry with a vifly buzzer and small gps module.
Hi Nick, Great video and review of the AvionRC IKON3. Personally, I'm interested in building one, I would like to get one with walksnail, but I think I could build it and save a little. Thanks again for the video and info on these quad.
Hi, Thank you for the information! I have a question about their lines. Do you happen to know the difference between the Nexa, the Ikon, and the Avio? Also, out of all their quads, which one do you like the most? Thanks again! Best regards,
I won't speak as I know, looking at the frames the avio tend to be a racing format with props in view, the ikon props out of view, H style frame and max 3inch prop. The evo is props out of view and 3inch and above prop. I don't have a true favorite...if I had to pick on it would likely be a 2.5inch like the ikon 2.5 or ikon 2.5 Max (which I have but no video on it yet), just due to 2.5 fits my flying space a bit better.
I used to have an Avio 3", but the arms broke way too often. Also, some people might not like having the VTX screwed to the top plate, as maintenance is a bit trickier, since the camera is connected to the vtx and there is no quick plug for that.
Typically when I have to work on these I take the screws out of the top plate then rotate the plate enough to get at the AIO. Where you think the O3 would be better mounted in the rear to the bottom plate?
Loving your videos, and you rip in all of them! Im looking for a 3-3.5 walksnail quad for my first drone and im torn between the ikon 3 and the nexa evo 3.5. Looking to stay under 250g, light freestyle/ amateur b-roll. What would you pick? Are there any others i should look at?
Thank you. Appreciate the complement. For b roll or what I often refer to has flat exploratory flight I suggest the evo 3.5, we can get under 250grams still and will get longer flights with the larger prop efficiency.
Thanks so much for the quick reply! Seems I'll be watching a lot more of your videos as I expand my fleet. I love the smaller drones. Keep up the great work. Evo 3.5 order going in tonight!
I’m still on analogue and always thought latency was a good reason to stay put - but I don’t see anything that resembles latency in any of your flight lines. Thanks for the review.
Latency at my flight skills while noticeable I find I adjust after a few flights. This only when I go from analog or hdzero to DJI or Walksnail. Inside is much more noticeable and harder to adjust to.
That powerloop at 4m40s was one your best moves. What a time we live in where can get this type of footage to the goggles. By the way one of your props are chipped. Thats my OCD talking lol
Pretty sure those are brother hobby motors 😂 other than that good review brother as always, and another great quad from avant/avion.. Eddie always kills it
@@NickBurnsFPV wife says I owe you thanks for my birthday presents. Mob 6 2024, and air 65… so thank you brother, quickly became my two favorite whoops. Got the new hmgbrd v3.1 rs today, wow it’s fast!!! Cam angle a lil too high for my liking, gonna 3d print one more my speed.
Great Video as usual! Might be a stupid question, why does radio signal is flashing in the OSD footage! It works that's cool with me, just wondering! Thank You!
Hi Nick, Isn't that the RSSI in DBm? It's a % scaled from 0 to -130 something. And when dipping bellow 50 there's an alarm and it blinks... I don't recall the details as I use link quality only :)
This thing looks RAD. I myself don't mind a little extra junk in the trunk, if it adds something useful all for it. I'm not a racer, so if shaving half a gram get's me 5 seconds extra flight time, I'll just bring one more battery for all those lost 5 seconds added together in one mroe flight. The design looks easy to work on, lots of nice finishing touches and very clean, AND it's looker too. From your video it looks like an absolute gas to fly. That's well worth the extra weight. Thanks for the review!

The conclusion of my questions is dynamic idle will work acro mode or air mode? *Sorry my english maybe not good:D
My first thought is why are you making changes to a well tuned quad? idle is to keep the props spinning at all times, even with 0 throttle. This is how flip, rolls and other 0 throttle move are possible. Without airmode and idle the quad falls out of the air with no control in those same moves.

That dive at 4:45 was absolutely mint Nick. Well done. Not a millimeter to spare.
