Rolling Rock Extra Pale (1500th Review!) | Latrobe Brewing Co. | Beer Review |

  • Today's review is the 1500th review on the channel, and to celebrate this milestone review, I thought I'd take a look at a beer from the Latrobe Brewing Company, and they're under the Anheuser-Busch umbrella, and it's their Rolling Rock Extra Pale. Not only is this a classic American Adjunct Lager that you can typically find in the Northeastern part of the United States, but it's also the first-ever beer I had an entire bottle of in my life. The review is a bit longer than usual because of my personal story surrounding the beer, but hopefully you enjoy my take on this Pennsylvania classic!
    Commercial Description:
Using a time-honored recipe with only the finest malted barley and blend of hops, Rolling Rock is a classic American lager that is as well-known for its distinctive, full-bodied taste as it is for its craftsmanship, heritage and green bottle.
    Pertinent Information:
Brewery - Latrobe Brewing Company (Anheuser-Busch) (St. Louis, MO)
Beer - Rolling Rock Extra Pale
    Style - American Adjunct Lager
    ABV - 4.4%
    IBU - 5
Canned On Date - 08/06/22 (Approximately three months old at the time of review)

Rolling Rock has been my beer of choice for 36 years now. If you ask my 37 year old son, he would tell you this is the only beer he has known me to drink. I didn't really notice a change in taste when the company was bought by AB in 2006. I drink it from a keg and from bottles. I have too many RR collectibles to switch brands now. Thanks for your review. Bottoms up !

Thanks for the comment, man! That is quite a storied history with this beer. Totally understand being loyal to the brand, especially if you enjoy it. I'll probably never enjoy this one, but that doesn't mean others can't. I always say to drink what you like, so here's hoping that next Rolling Rock is just as good as the last!

Congrats on 1500 reviews man! The first few years I got into beer it was almost exclusively craft beer and I hardly drank any of these cheaper AAL types, but as I've grown older I've found a place for just about everything. I'm a midwest guy so I'll either drink Hamms, Old Style, or PBR. Cheers!

Thanks, dude! Yeah, I pretty much dove head-first into craft beer, but I did have a few macro beers along the way. I feel that with beer, much like certain things in life, you start appreciating certain aspects -- and in this case, styles -- that you didn't understand or even care about previously. I can appreciate almost every style at this point, and I feel there's a certain time and place for any beer. I also understand why some folks love certain beers I don't, and vice versa. It's a beautiful thing. I appreciate the support, buddy! Thanks for sharing, too!

Heck Yeah! I LOVE storytime! Had a sip of Genesee from my father's beer can and the sweet age of 4 to see what all of the 'adult fuss' was about (well, a couple more since) and that put me off of beer until I was eighteen. Had Rolling Rock right before the buyout and my thoughts changed a bit (much-more preferred whiskey), had a Magic Hat #9 and found beer could be incredibly different and a whole different world ahead of me: So Rolling Rock also holds a special place in my heart as well. But enough of that... Seriously glad you tackled this, and would love to see you shake things up by reviewing Macro's from time to time in the future. And once again, cheers man!

It's funny that we have a very similar story with our first taste pretty much putting us off beer until later in life, haha! That is cool that Rolling Rock holds that distinction for you, though. I appreciate you sharing your story, as well! I'll try to tackle some macro stuff a bit more frequently going forward. Maybe like once per month or something. I do enjoy trying -- or re-trying -- a lot of them because I typically associate them with some sort of memory. I also appreciate the support!

Congrats on 1500! I mean Robert De Niro in The Deer Hunter, Angry Video Game Nerd, and Jim Gaffigan from the old commercials can’t be wrong. Although I think the taste changed once AB bought them in 2006. First sip was Old Milwaukee and first full beer was Coors Light but legally was Budweiser. Again congrats on 1500 and keep up the great work. Your reviews are honest and totally relatable and I look forward to watching them daily. Cheers to the next 1500 and stay safe with big snow coming.

Ah man I recently watched The Deer Hunter for the first time since they put it on netflix and that is a fantastic film. I don't love the beer like I do a Coors Banquet but it's much better than adjunct lagers like Budweiser or Miller Lite. I am in college so unfortunately at the moment I can't really afford craft beer, the only IPA I tried was a VooDoo Ranger and I hated the hoppy taste.

    • @averagejoe716
      @averagejoe716  8 місяців тому

I can totally see that, Nick. The Deer Hunter is a great film! As for this beer, it's just one that doesn't resonate with me to this day. It's not horrible, but I can think of many other macro beers I'd rather have. Coors Banquet is definitely one of them, for sure!

It's a huge part of the reason I started doing more themed events like Western New York Wednesdays, 10 Days of Pumpkin, Shelfie reviews and Holiday reviews (coming next month). I think when assessing who would enjoy the channel, I'd like it to be for everyone: macro drinkers, craft drinkers who enjoy bigger breweries, those of whom enjoy specific styles, etc.
I think next year I'm going to work on reviewing more macro beers with Macro Monday, and I'm hoping to finally introduce Viewer's Choice Cellar Sunday. Kyle does Cellar Saturday, and I love watching it, and knowing I have a crapload of beers in the cellar, I think it'd be awesome. I need to kind of re-order it a bit more since all my beers are just in boxes, but once I do, I'm going to post a poll every single week of five beers and have viewer's choose what beer I review. Something about reviewing a beer and discussing it with other folks who enjoy the same hobby = tons of fun. I don't take it too seriously, and I just try to have fun with it. I always thought rolling rock had a slight sake taste to it a lot of rice used in brewing have not had it 20 years.

I could see that, Doug. Not sure exactly what it is about this one, but it's just not for me. I can see how people enjoy it, though. Thanks for the comment!
      Cheers!

I’ve had Rolling Rock many times before. But like you, I would not go out and buy it. Since I grew up outside of Pottsville, PA Yuengling Lager was my go to macro shelfie beer for many years.

Yeah, it's just one of those things where there's so many other macro beers I'd select over this. I much prefer something like Yuengling, without question.
      Cheers, Ryan!

Rolling Rock was much better 25 years ago before Inbev bought it out and ruined it in my opinion. Back then It had a good and unique taste, now it tastes pretty bland like Busch Light.

I've heard the same thing, Ralph. That said, I only had it once before that (the story mentioned in the review), and I hated it, so I would've loved to try it beforehand as an adult.
      Cheers!

Yeah, I could totally see that. For me, it's like if corn soda existed. I mean, it probably does, but I'm talking about if it was a common thing.
      Cheers, Chris!

Drinking this makes me want to go back to the past to play the shitty games that suck ass.

LMAO! AVGN strikes again! It's wild how many comments come from his fans, but it's so awesome. Definitely could see drinking some of this playing games of yesteryear, though.
      Cheers!
