    Hey Jason, just wanted to say of all the recent Pivot Switchblade videos yours is the first one I clicked on and really looked forward to. You tend to focus less on the marketing garbage that most reviewers spend too much time regurgitating and spend more time with actual riding characteristics & comparisons. This is super handy. My buddy and I are huge MTB nerds who often memorize geo numbers from various bikes just to discuss and we always mention your reviews. Your Trail 429 videos played a huge role in me selling my V2 Switchblade for a 429. Thanks!

      Wow, thank you! Like you, I prefer my video review style. It was the entire reason for me starting this channel. Anyone can look up prices, builds, geo and bla bla bla... I try to create reviews that give the viewer a chance to understand how the bike rides and feels

    Can’t wait for the back to back video with the 140. I’m very happy to hear it’s not as chattery in the rear. That’s the only reason I sold my last SB. I’m so close to calling Salt Cycles for a new build 140 LR! But still loving my Ripley off your advice, such a fun bike. Big prayers out to you and a speedy recovery my friend!

    I just got a 2023 Switchblade on account of the closeout price. What I find interesting, it that the new geometry is lower, longer, slacker, with a steeper seat tube. All of those things happen if I just put a $100 1 degree shift headset on my 2023 bike. I know it's not exact, but the head angle would be that same as the new bike, and everything else moves in that direction. That said, my steeper 2023 geometry feels like it steers too slow to me, since the bike I normally ride has a 69.5 degree head tube. I almost fell into a ravine over the weekend, because I wasn't used to the slower steering. I had to grab onto a tree to not plummet a hundred feet or more. So I'll take the 66.2 degrees for now and just try to get used to it. We don't all have to follow the trends, lol.

    switchblade is at the top of my list to pair with my v4 ripley. Confused why there are not more retailers selling the brunch ride v6 switchblade. Want a bike capable for the parks(frisco rec area park, vail, copper, wp tressel etc..) and for more intense trails around where I live. Probably 80% more rough local trails and 20% lift access parks (weekends).
    I feel obligated to buy from salt cycles for my next bike just because of how relatable and helpful yumyum is.

    I bought the PRO XT/XTR Switchblade build in 2022 and I had not been mountainbiking for 8 years. Now having gained more understanding I feel that I actually have the right bike for me because there's no one bike that can do it all, so there's always going to be pros *_and_* cons. My main gripe with my bike was initially that the seattube angle is too slack, and to be honest I've just learned to deal with it through each ride. Every bike you need to apply the technique to that specific bike to get anywhere, so it's just one of them things.
    Now seeing and hearing some thoughts on this new iteration, I feel that I am glad I have the bike I do have, because I have no need for a more aggressive bike. My bike is like a mellow mini-enduro that is mostly a trailbike, but can often surprise you with how capable it actually is. Not a bikepark bike by any means, so just got to be clear on that. Personally I've just not had the bike complain even if I do push it, and I just know the bike is up for another ride before I am myself.
    I will be swopping the stock 175mm cranks to 165mm for this season to limit pedal strikes, but other than that it's just staying on top of maintenance and heading out to ride. I'm never going to sell this bike because to me you loose so much money just shortly after it's new, so it's better to just put money into maintenance because a well working bike will put a smile on your face.

    Great review ... I don't know who Pivot hired or what they did, but since around 2020 they did a complete 180 and now they have one of the nicest looking lineups out there. Frame design and choice of colors has been great, plus as Jason mentioned, they offer a ton of build options.
    As far as this Switchblade, it's sick, but kinda like iphones they're starting to plateau ... Much better off getting the previous version at a 35% discount.

    Just got a Pivot Trail 429. Based on your recommendation I went with Salt Cycles. Those guys don’t disappoint, way better deal than I can get out in CA. They let me customize the hell out of it which was great.
    I totally agree the Pivot is super quiet! Almost no sound coming out of this bike. Downsides, their paint job and color is really meh. And then tend to be super big. I’m 5’11 on the large and thinking of picking up a smaller stem. Still I’m really happy with the Trail 429, super fast and great for the local trails in SoCal.

    Awesome to get a winter glimpse of MTB yumyum! Nice that the new Switchblade upped its descending capabilities to distinguish it more so from the Trail 429... it will be interesting to see if the next iteration of the Trail 429 will beef up its rowdy factor too. Thanks for another entertaining and informative review!

      @@mtbyumyum It’s interesting that a lot of companies make the bikes longer and slacker but a focused trail bike like the SC 5010 for example is just as capable on the descents , it just takes a bit more skill and you’re 💯 right it’s all about how the bike “ feels “ actually out on the trail 👍🏾

    I'm eagerly awaiting a refresh to the Trail 429. I'm on a 2020 V2 and it's been my favorite bike I've ever owned but want to see what the next version looks like. I would love a Switchblade but the Trail 429 seems to cover most of what I ride 90% of the time, it is just such a good climber!

    • @mikem4215
      @mikem4215 8 місяців тому

      Ya me too. However if this 2024 switchblade release, which is really just a minor refresh, is an indication of what may come to trail 429 then not expecting much change at all. Maybe a degree or half degree of change in certain areas of geometry but that’s it I’m thinking.

    Nice seeing a new video from you. I've owned a '21 Switchblade and currently on a '22 Firebird. The Firebird rides so well on everything, I'm curious if the new Switchblade would be a better option now. I had made my '21 SB into a mini Firebird which is why I made the change. The big 170/165 Firebird really fits 20% of my riding but I don't really get penalized that much on the other 80%.

    Thanks for the review. I purchased my last bike a 2022 Rascal Revel due to your reviews and has worked out great. Thinking of buying a second bike, I'm 5'-7" and currently like the sizing on the medium Rascal. My son who is 5'-5" finds it a little big. Thinking after your review a small Switchblade might work good for both of us. Do you think it climbs as well as the Rascal, I assume it would descend better due to increase in travel and a little more slack headtube.

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  8 місяців тому

      Without riding the Rascal and this back to back, I would say this would feel more efficient and just cruise up the trail better than the Rascal. In very tricky bits of trail I can't say... both climb demanding sections of trail very well tho. Between the two, and if they both fit well, I would go with the Switchblade over the Rascal for sure! My size medium Firebird was just a little too cramped for me but I still put several hundred miles on the bike two seasons ago.

    Hey Jason, I've watched a ton of your content, some of the videos over and over. I hope the surgery went well! ***I thought*** I had landed on the SB140LR until I saw this video. The Switchblade Brunch Ride is on sale at my LBS right now and cheaper by quite a bit that a comparably equipped SB140LR. I am an old-schooler, cutting my teeth in the 90's on a hardtail so the experience you seemed to have on the SB140LR sounded FANTASTIC (when it seems to have edged out the 2022-23 Switchblade). Yeti has also always been "the dream bike". Now, I don't know what to do 😀.
    We just attempted a day at Deer Valley but were doomed with horrible weather and a pretty bad crash (not mine) so my demo day on the Switchblade didn't go off great and didn't give it a fair fight. I was hoping you had time to compose your thoughts and comparisons about the 2024 Switchblade and the SB140LR. You going to be able to put that together soon?

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  2 місяці тому +1

      Thank you. Surgery went great and now months later, my knee has never been better! Sorry you ran into bad weather.... bummer. Although the two bikes are different, the biggest factor would probably be sizing. The medium Switchblade no longer fits me and is just too big. For that reason alone I would still personally take the sb140 over the switchblade. Both are very good, different, but very good!

    Good review as always. Lots to unpack here. For starters, your previous Blade review mentioned at times the bike felt cumbersome while climbing certain sections, maneuvering around. Still feel same w this new launch? Second, I’d be VERY curious to hear your future review on your current Yeti build compared to the new Blade. Agree, fit and finish on Pivot bikes is second to none but, you pay for it. Hard pill to swallow right now when carton of eggs is $10. Mentioned by previous reviewer here, curious to see if Pivot beefs up their Trail 429 at all but seems like they already did or one can just build up there own. I own a Blade now, like it a lot especially when the downhills get choppy. I’d love to however put it up against a Yeti SB 140 to compare apples to apples. Appreciate your work here again. I do value your opinion. Very good. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 I also learned that my lbs is not planning on ordering this new Blade yet for their shops because they still have a lot of inventory of “old” Blades in house. Hmmm….Depending on what I decide I might give Salt Cycle a call and order one if I can figure out what to do with my “old” Blade.

    My only problem with Pivot is the superboost rear hub spacing. Coming from a racing background and also the recent supply shortage. I do not need nor want a bike using parts that can't easily be swapped from one bike to another. I understand that to some degree that is unavoidable. When I have a family of 4 and all of our bikes have boost hubs and I also have built the wheels using the same hub. I can swap wheels from one bike to another with no problem. I also keep parts on hand to replace and rebuild. With the high cost of MTB these days, the superboost is just a thorn in the side for serious riders. I love the way the Switchblade rides and would have bought one all ready if not for this one issue.

    Everyone tells me 5'8" is a Medium, but I definitely felt stretched out when pedaling it around the lot. I haven't found a Small to try yet, but feel like I should before making any final decisions 🙏 Keep killing it, I love watching your videos!

      Honestly, if you’re really 5’8”, like me, then I am very sorry to say that Pivot is probably not your brand moving forward. I bought a size small and it felt a bit cramped on the climbing or any flat peddling. The downhill was fun on the small actually, but it just felt too cramped in the end. I messed with stem sizes to make things better, but you’re probably better off looking at the Yeti, SB 140 which in my opinion and experience does everything better than the switchblade anyway…

      I confirmed tonight and my height is closer to 5'7" without shoes (though I'm not sure how much shorter you'd need to be to hit that sweet spot for a small). That's disappointing to hear about the Switchblade though, after riding 15 or so high end MTBs over the last few years, the old generation Switchblade stands above the rest (for my riding style), even above my experience on the 2020 SB140. Appreciate the insight though, I think I should ride Small & Medium back to back before I pull the trigger on a new frame 🙏

I have found a new 2023 trail 429 for $4999 with the fox performance shocks. A new 2022 switchblade with the fox factory shock for $4999. A used 2023 trail 429 enduro for 4900$. Which would you recommend? Most trails here are xc style but some black diamond trails some blue trails roots and rocks. But not many huge long downhills. I am in NC. I want a bike that can handle everything and also plush some. Fast uphills I currently have a giant anthem for a long time I believe a 2015 giant anthem so this will be a huge upgrade. I think that a bike with a 160 fork, 140-150 rear travel, 65* HTA and 76-77* STA makes for the perfect all around Trailbike. Not too slack, not too long, still good for green and blue trails but long enough and ample travel for black trails. In the past, I would have recommended a bike with shorter travel but these new longer travel bikes pedal and climb so well that more travel is no longer a detriment. And, you can change the character of the bike so easily by just changing the tires. Install a set of light Downcountry tires and you're ready to roll fast and go far. Install a set of beefy Enduro tires and you're ready for the steep and rough. There are so many good brands to choose from: Stumpy Evo, Ripmo, SB140 LR, Switchblade, and many more. If you can only own one bike this is the type of bike I would choose, not a shorter travel bike.
