- What an awesome hack! This $10 powerful magnet can transform the Sony F-828, F-717 or F-707 into an infrared photography camera. I'll show you how that works along with some examples. This is one of the cheapest and most accessible ways to beginning infrared photography. I also really love the lens of the Sony F-828 and the files I get from the camera. At around $50 it makes a really affordable but quality camera that can also take normal visible spectrum photographs!

This is one of the coolest photography hacks I've ever learned about! Makes it probably the best cheap infrared camera you can get.
hello, is it helpful to see treasure?
Ola, será que eu não posso fazer isso com a Sony h50?
I have a f717 since 2004, gave it away to my doughter who gave it back some years later, now I am trying your trick. I wonder what the difference will be with auto setting. What your main reason for manual setting?
Something you might find cool - if you take the raw files and open them in Darktable (free software), you can choose passthrough as the demosaicing method (but color balance them first, Darktable is flexible enough to do so), which simply displays the amount of light captured for every individual photocell on the sensor. Since all the different bayer color filters transmit the same in this sort of deep IR, you can then get image characteristics that are only seen on cameras like the Leica Monochrom. It makes the digital "grain" way finer. I use it with my full spectrum Sony a6000 and even iso 3200 is perfectly usable.
This is an interesting idea - I know the concept of skipping the demosiacing because of a monochrome converted Pentax camera I have, but I have never heard of anyone applying it to IR files. That sounds like a fun rabbit hole to dive into :)
@@snappiness Well, I would not say it's necessarily a rabbit hole, what I described is really it. I'm not aware of any other use for this method. Regardless, I hope you have fun if you do decide to investigate it. :)
What happens if you use Dehaze on IR pics? I don't know if I'm the only person who does Dehaze before anything else but I really like what it does (shooting on a dinosaur Nikon D300).
I just found your channel & I haven't stopped watching videos for over an hour now! I'm pretty sure this is my next camera 🙂👍.
Thank you!
@@user-qp4qc3fs3w The same thing as when you dehaze normal images. It looks unnatural. I know this question was not really aimed at me but I basically only use curves. They can do everything you need without weird HDR artifacts and saturation irregularities.
Yes I dehaze basically immediately evey time. Sometimes I click it off again, but rarely. It gives such a nice look.
@@user-qp4qc3fs3w
love this so much - and the results are great! if i didn’t already have a converted pocket camera, i’d be all over this. infrared is so much fun, everyone should try it
I agree! So much fun! :)
To get the classic IR white foliage look manually set the manual white balance option by pointing the camera at green grass or green leaves to set it.
Great trick, and it works well with my F828. The most difficult part for me is magnet management. I'm always picking them off my car door, my keys, and all kinds of other stuff. I just purchased some smaller magnets with holes in the center. That way I can tie a cord around them and attach it to my camera strap.
That's clever!
…i keep my magnet on the Flashmount of my f828 so it is always in reach🙂
After watching your video a couple of months ago I bought one of these and was really pleased with the results as I have been wanting to try infra red for a while. I actually like the ergonomics of the camera too but the interface is terrible. Thank you for the video.
This is so cool!
Interesting information. I shall ponder it. Thanks!
Thanks for watching as always!
Very cool, thanks for sharing :)
Thanks for stopping by!
Hello, informative video.
I cant find the link to where to get the magnet you bought?
Could you please tell me what sd pevific kind of magnet snd where i can buy it?
Thank for the info.
I just discovered your channel and im so glad I did! I picked one of these up a couple months ago as a throw in with some other cameras i bought from my favorite thrift shop! I didnt really look at it when I was buying all the cameras, because i was distracted by the newer cameras I was focused on, but I opened this camera's bag and saw "Zeiss" and they said I could have it for free since I was already buying a few other cameras that day, so I thought "WHY NOT?!"... BUT then I brought it home and forgot about it all together... But tonight, I was rearranging my recording studio and found a mystery camera bag and was surprised to see this camera in the bag. Not only did I discover the camera but I was lucky enough to find it also came with three batteries, and external charger, a CF card, a Sony memory stick, an additional screw on 2x zoom lens, and a few different lens filters. I just Googled it for the heck of it and discovered these cameras have a great reputation and then I found your two videos about this camera and I couldnt be more excited to play with it. I have an old Canon Rebel DSLR that I had been considering converting to infrared - but after finding this video, you just saved me a lot of time and effort! And it looks like this Sony will even be superior to the old Canon in basically every way anyway (cool lens and ergonomics, and slightly higher resolution)! So, Ive got the first battery on the charger right now and I'm hoping some of the batteries will take a charge... AND that I have at least one magnet lying around that is powerful enough to flip the infrared mechanism 🤞. Excited for tomorrow! Wish me luck and thanks so much! You earned a new subscriber 😊
Great tip, thank you!
It's super fun!
I love my 828 (and 717s), but the two articulating parts can start to get loose in time. Apparently there are seven screws inside that need to be tightened, but I didn't want to disassemble it, and instead used a cable tie to keep the two parts together and not wobble around. It's been like that for many years.
Wow, I had no idea. I’m so glad I hung onto my 828!
Super cool tip on the IR
sooo awesome!
This is awesome!! I just did this with my F707!
Awesome!
I think I now have to by a Sony F - camera. From central Canada I’m really enjoying your UA-cam channel. I’m a Olympus MFT shooter first with a couple old Minolta cameras for occasional fun film stuff.
Good stuff!! I recently picked up the f717 and while it's good, it has some quirks that makes the f828 the better camera to get in my opinion 👍 if you still were looking at them :)
Awesome video, I'm so excited to try this!
Troubleshooting question in case anyone else is having the same problem: I used the magnet hack with the magnet linked here and my screen went totally dark. It looks like the gray shutter inside the lens is stuck in place and can’t move out of the way. Maybe I did something to the magnet that controls the shutter? Let me know if anyone has any advice, thank you!
.... just stumbled across your channel James and I'm very happy I did , excuse me for a moment I've got some videos to catch up on, will get back to you !
Great! Welcome! Thanks for stopping by :)
This just blew my mind
It's crazy! Crazy cool 😎
Fantastic video and great channel! I ordered a Sony 828 on eBay yesterday and it will arrive soon. Can’t wait! Thank you so much. Now I wonder about the filter. Should I get one and if so which one would be good for starting? Could you please explain the differences in the results you get without a filter and with a 720nm or 850nm filter? Fotga also has a six-in-one filter which allows to chose from a wider range of the spectrum. Do you have any thoughts about this? I would love to hear them. Thanks again.
Gotta try this, I have both of these cameras.
any idea if it‘s possible to shoot color infrared(similar to aerochrome) with this method?
wow!!!! Thanks!!
I've confirmed the F717 will work with the magnet trick, but it takes some fiddling around with settings, distances, focal length, manual focus, etc. to get a decent shot that is in focus. It's possible not all focal lengths will work well, but it's an ongoing experiment.
Is this still confirmed? Any update?
@@jujub5557 I was able to get decent photos from an F717 by using M mode, and manual focus, and carefully adjusting focus back from infinity. I actually got better results when it was not at telephoto. (I think I jumped the gun in my previous comment - which I've edited now). Anyway, it takes a bit of experimentation (ongoing), and it's harder to see the image on the F717's low resolution screen, so it's a process of looking at them on the computer to really see what's happening...
There are several cameras that don't have (strong) IR-filters, so they can be used for IR photography with a light filter (which blocks visible light). E.G. Panasonic FZ200, Ricoh GR III and even the iPhone cameras.
Yes, I've played with this before! I found the Pentax *ist dl measured on some infrared site for letting in quite a bit of IR and gave it a shot. Worked pretty well! I didn't know iphones did too.
Thanks for this great tip-off, the f828 is now top of my shopping list. BTW How are you focussing in IR mode, is it necessary to pre-focus using visible light or does the camera focus well as is.
The camera seems to autofocus just fine with the hot mirror moved and an IR filter on the front. Live view works just fine as well so if you needed to manual focus that way you could. This has been on both close up subjects and further away.
@@snappiness That's amazing, is there any chance you might put together a video with some full-spectrum shots, perhaps some astro photos?
@@philbarnes1200 that would be a fun experiment. I do have an astro tracking mount now I could throw the camera on and see how it performs. :) I don't get out into dark skies much, but I'll try to remember to give it a shot next time I am.
I've watched nearly all of the snappiness videos and usually just think that "that's cool, I'm glad I know more about that camera but I don't feel the need to buy one." Same with the original F828 video. Until now.
This little IR hack really caught my attention, and I started looking for a cheap F707 or F717, and I found a few. But the F828 has that lovely mechanical zoom control, and a wider focal length, and can take Compact Flash cards.... So now I have an F828 on its way to me. Watching this video turned out to be an expensive endeavour! 😄
Haha, oh no! Sorry! 😁 It is pretty neat though! And I think the camera is great for other pictures as well. A really nice old camera.
@@snappiness the fact that it can easily switch between full spectrum/IR and regular colour is one of the most exciting things about it. I appreciate not having to permanently alter a classic camera.
It's just ironic that it has arrived before the Olympus C-2000 I won on eBay, specifically because it is supposed to have a weak IR filter. I replaced it before I even received it! 😄
kindly help how to stop camera taking picture and record at same time
I learned about this years ago from someone else on YT. I also have a 717. There was even a YT showing the 'X-Ray' effect with certain fabrics.....
Besides the infraree capabilities, what an AMAZING body! How can I get that in 24 megapixels?
What size is the lens thread so I can get the IR filter. Thank you in advance for the information 👍
58mm filter thread 👍
Super cool.
Try to do some IR Astro photography.
Thanks for this great tip and reminder. I used to do this IR photography back in the early 2000 with the Sonys F series, but back then we didn't know about the magnet trick and so I disassembled the cameras and replaced the internal IR blocking filter with a flat piece of optical glass, so one could get all the ranges of f-stop and speed. I sold off all those cameras except a Sony P8 that is modded. Did some wonderful photos with that, including a couple that ended up in shows.
I picked up a F717 and F828 recently off eBay and am enjoying this kind of IR photography again.
Question: with the F717 I can't get it to focus properly in IR mode no matter what I do (manual focus etc) except at the far end of the zoom range. The F828 works fine. Any ideas?
Thanks again.
But not in IR mode it focuses fine?
@@snappiness Correct. It's fine in regular light mode.
Were you able to get focused IR shots with the F717?
what size is the 750nm filter that screws onto the end of the lens?
its a 58mm size filter
Thank you for the video. Note that the Sony DSC-V1 and DSC-V3 also have this feature. To be honest, I tried the magnet trick only on V3.
Good to know!!
Also the F707!
The V1 and V3 require the addition of filter tube adapters, which can be kind of hard to find, but not impossible. Hoping for some prime shooting conditions before winter to really try out the IR capabilities of the V1, V3, F707, F717, and F828...not to mention the Nikon Coolpix 950 and 4500, as well.
@Badgerheist the zoom extender works as a filter tube. If you just but that lens add on.
Have you tried removing infrared filter from that sigma sd14 (apparently it just snaps off) or have I missed that completely?
I haven't made a video on it yet! But I have done it :) I would love if they had that feature on more cameras.
@@snappiness super cool, can't wait as I need some guidance on how exsctly do it and if I need a filter (based on this video I assume yes :))
@@ardas77 for my SD Quattro it's as simple using a pair of tweezers to remove the filter. Kinda just pops right out. And I also use a IR filter.
So when using he magnet do I still need to have the Infrared filter attached ?
yes u need the ir filter 720 nanometer to shoot infrared photos
I tried this with the F717, but couldn’t get infinity focus. Any hints?
This can happen when the zoom is set to its widest focal length. Zoom in slightly and it should now focus at infinity.
Have you tried doing Fashion with that mod in place?
Edit: and after seeing the question on Filter Mechanisims below, try Frequency Shifting the IR up in to the Visible light portion of the spectrum, you'll be amazed the colour patterns present in nature that we can't see, but which bugs and birds use every day.
Also, a decent Security Camera with built-in IR illumination, makes a great spotlight for IR Photography.
If you can find an old Dahua BR 250, the IR LED's throw a beam that's the equivalent lumens of a car headlight.
I haven't, people's skin looks really funny when you let IR let through. I've done a little before with other cameras.
So you don't have to keep the magnet attached - just a poke it on that spot will flick a switch that stays until you turn the camera off?
Great shots btw. !!
Yep, that's right! It somehow is flipping a switch or yanking it to a different spot where it then clicks - I don't really know. But all I know is that in use it doesn't go back unless you flip it again or restart the camera.
@@snappiness the magnet is basically overpowering the control relay coil and making it activate. I’ve had a DSC-F717 since it was released. I’ve been using this trick for years now. It’s awesome although I do find focus to be very tricky.
Nice video! Thank you! I have just one question. Everybody say that in order to make this camera infrared you need to use magnet and filter. But when I use just magnet I think its still works. So I see these red or blue images. Or maybe I don’t understand smth?
You just need the magnet. The filters are for filtering out other wavelengths for different effects. Without an added filter on the lens, you are getting all of the visible spectrum + IR.
@@snappiness hanks for answer!! And if I use magnet and nd filter. Does it mean than with ND filter I block some visible spectrum?
@@lofconvic1075 Depending on the material it's made of, it can also block some IR. So not a good exchange for an IR-pass filter in that regard.
Haha that is really cool.
Pretty crazy, isn't it? Just funny how people figure these things out. I know I won't be the first person holding up powerful magnets to my electronics to see what happens xD
I think I"ll try to convert a thrift store camera first. It must be cheaper but I don't know how the results will compare.
I wonder if it will work on the DSC-H50 since it also has a nightshot mode...
I'm not sure! The only other cameras I've seen so far when I looked into it was the 828 and 717. But maybe there's other ways for the other cameras that can do this!

How can I shoot with color with an IR blue Chrome Filter?
If you don't throw a filter on the lens, then it'll shoot full spectrum, letting in visible and IR light. The IR chrome filter let's in a lot of visible light and cuts out just a bit.
Hello, i wonder if i can doet that in sony h50 ???
not the magnet hack but you have to dismantle the camera and cut the nightshot switch of the h50 you need to hire a camera tech specialist to do the hack
ua-cam.com/video/otBc2az1BMM/v-deo.html watch the video this is sony h9 can also done to the h50
Man getting my 707 going to do this has been a pain in the ass I recommend the f828 since it's not so outdated for memory cards lol. I want am f828 so bad but I'm poor :(.
I wish the price hadn't jumped on the 828. It used to be so cheap :( keep an eye out for a deal!
hi! can i use this hack with digital cameras?
It only works with a few of these Sony cameras. Most cameras the hot mirror is adhered to the sensor itself.
What happens if you use the magnet trick but don't put the filter in front on the lense to cut visible light?
That would be considered "full-spectrum" or in other words, letting in all visible, UV, and IR light the sensor is sensitive to. And it works, just a different effect on your final image.
Is this how people get the "pink tree" effect?
Where is the magnet contact for the 717?
Which lens exactly created the starbursts ?
The camera is fixed lens, so just the lens attached on the camera! Just make sure to stop it down as far is it'll go and focus to infinity :)
@@snappiness thanks! just wasn't sure if it was because of some filter. I know on the older cameras they had filters that would cause the light to starburst like that but I've never had or used one myself.
Can you shoot without infrared filter?
Yes - in which case it would be "full spectrum" capturing all the IR it can as well as visible spectrum.
It also works with the F707.
Okay, good to know! I must have missed that in my research. Awesome.
Dang. Not 4 months ago I deepsixed my dsc-f707.
Had to look up that phrase though I had heard it somewhere before :) too bad!
Just curious, if the magnet turns it into an infrared camera, why do you still need an IR filter on the lens? Asking out of ignorance of IR photography!
Good question! The IR filters cut out visible light (to varying degrees) so that mostly or only IR passes through. If you shoot without a filter you get every wavelength the sensor can capture, which is some UV, visible light of course, and some IR.
@@snappiness Ah, gotcha! Thanks for clarifying!
@@snappiness That's backwards, sort of.
IR filters cut out IR light, switching out the filter lets the IR light get to the sensor.
What you'll find inside these Sony's, is that it's two filters on a mechanism that rocks on a pivot below the lens, one is the IR cut, the other is the Visible light cut, so in normal operation, the IR filter is blocking the IR light from getting to the sensor, and in Night Mode, it's swung out and the Visible light filter is in place, blocking the colours we would see as normal vision.
Part of why this is needed, is because of the different focal length of different wave lengths of light, hence why older Film-Era lenses have focus marks for Daylight and InfraRed film. When you're focused for Blue, Green will be soft, Red is a Blur, and IR is pollution across the sensor. Focus for IR, and Red is soft, Green is out of focus, and Blue is a nightmare.
The same arrangement of moving filters is now found in security cameras, or fixed inside the M12 lens on Action Cameras like Go Pro, whereas DSLR's, MILC's, Cine Cameras, ENG cameras and most camcorders all have the IR filter bonded to the sensor, same as the Optical Low Pass Filter that eliminates Moire on better Cine Cameras.
@@PiDsPagePrototypes Maybe I misunderstood the original question. I was talking about why I was using a 720nm filter on the lens. But that's a great explanation for what the moving filter is in front of the sensor on this camera.
@@snappiness 😁 ah! I read "on the lens" as "in the lens"....
Teste com outras cameras que. Tenham infravermelho , tipo camcorders e teste esse truque com o imã e poste um video de tudo isso e veja o que descobriu , se for possivel , claro!
I had decided I wasn't going to buy that camera......but now...
It is very cool :) but don't buy it if you don't want it! Plenty of other cool cameras out there.
Is could be a hidden gem of a camera with the infrared. Are you using a infrared filter on the camera too?
Yes, on the lens I have either my 720nm or 850nm filters :)
Just bought this for $35 on Ebay...hopefully the seller sends it hahah. Always wanted to shoot infrared, but broke.
Awesome!!! Great find. I hope it works as well for you as it has for me.

Is anyone else seeing a Glitchy video. Hard to see
Interesting, it's working fine for me...
@@snappiness the first 5 mins seem a bit pixelated then it cleared up. I wonder if this works with the first sony. I think it was the f1 fixed lense with the weird LCD on top.
I've not had a infrared camera but all those shots always seem interesting.
Yeah I don't know what got me first interested in infrared, but it's been something I've always been drawn to. Last year was the first time I felt like I had the means to buy a standalone infrared camera, and since then I've used several. Lots of fun! Not for everyone, but fun :)
Wow! It seems as if the companies don't want to make cool stuff anymore. Just soulless auto focus everything. Don't get me wrong, I love them but they just don't echo innovation as much as hardware innovations do. This is another reason why I keep the sdQuattro.
is this dem magic cameras that see them ghosts and see through clothes?
some certain clothes are seethrough in infrared so dont do this its illegal
Don't take this camera to the beach!! Hahaha
yes its illegal
You can bet Sony did that intentionally, so you had to buy the next expensive model to have that feature! Just a small hardware change is all they needed... but didn't!
Need to order the magnet for mine :) GREAT Video as always Thanks
