First thing if you make it 600 passenger capacity you going to have to charge a $1,000 a night to even begin to break even on such a ship there's economy and scale you go to 5,000 to 6,000 passengers you only have to make $25 a night to be able to make a profit and with up selling and other add-ons the ship can be very profitable
Im sorry but the redesigned version looks absolutely horrible, I can’t believe that a team of engineers and designers drew up this ugly thing and said, yeah that looks good. Good thing this project flopped because this would have been an embarrassment to honor the France like this, she deserves better.
When I was 15 my parents took me on a cruise to the Eastern Caribbean out of Miami and Norway was leaving the same day. It looked like a huge wall of blue steel. I was on the Grandeur of the Seas on her 50th voyage and while I was rushed onto the ship and didn't really get to see the Norway, I had been invited to a tour of the bridge and Norway had passed us overnight and was very close to us. I remember thinking, man that was the SS France and thinking about how beautiful she was. What I wouldn't have given to sail on her when she was the France...
I was 15 when I went on this liner back in the 60’s. I remember my dad pointing to the funnels and being so impressed. It’s a good memory. It was a beautiful ship, very, very classy. It even had a place where teens could go and dance to “our” music of the day. I remember a young porter called Jean Pierre Petite and yes, we flirted. All good memories and by the way I’m 75 now.
I definitely think they have a good concept with putting living spaces in structures that look like funnels, but they could have made them like half the size and the ship would be much better proportioned.
God can't they design an ocean liner that doesn't look like some kind of giant floating modern toilet? That thing is absolutely hideous. You wanna give people something they would love? Rebuild the Normandie in all its Art Deco splendor. People would love that. Not another floating motel.
I Apart from all the other issues, I am staggered that the people behind the design of the new ship could have come up with something so appallingly ugly. Was there some competition to beat the cruise ships that sail out of Miami in terms of hideousness? Sorry, this project deserved to fail.
Truer words have never been spoken...the new France design looked like two apartment blocks on an old ferry hull. It was extremely fugly. I realize that maritime technology has to evolve as time goes on, but that design is so ridiculously ugly. I know that I would never want to sail on something like that knowing what the history of ocean liner has evolved into. Cruise ships of today are considerably better looking than that design. Keep the hull, but add a more consistent superstructure that's better balanced and flows better with the hull design. This ship would only need a single smoke stack, so use that to pay tribute to the first ship, but don't build apartment blocks with wings on it.
The proportions are all wrong, & made even worse by maintaining the same proportions when scaling it down! Also while the original SS France had a hull that was very efficient for its size, those two tower-blocks would double its fuel-costs, along with creating huge instability problems if a severe storm is encountered (especially as it would be too slow to outrun one)!
1:21. Sorry but that is incorrect. The fastest ship in the world was the S.S. United States. No vessel could touch its crossing time. It never lost its Blue Ribbon for having the fastest crossing time. Several other videos on the S.S. France (and then Norway) make points to mention that. It was the restrictions imposed following the Normandie disaster and also already implemented on the SS United States in its construction reducing fire and other damage. Granted the dock crew didn’t know how to operate the Normadies new water system however the need was there to begin with. It’s been mentioned this is why the France wasn’t as “luxurious” as the Normandie due to these conditions. Less wood used meaning far less decor and furnishings of that caliber. All in all it was the French’s last ditch effort to get back into the Ocean Liner game when airliners had already taken over that market. They knew beforehand they weren’t going to compete in the speed category.
True, but we're talking about the French...look at the lessons that should've been learned from the Normandie. She was absolutely gorgeous and is still my most favorite liner of all-time next to Titanic, but she was considered to be too pretentious for most people who ultimately ended up sailing on the Queen Mary. The France was also gorgeous and very aesthetically beautiful, but she was built during the decline of the ocean liner and lived a very short life in the Atlantic.
Given that this new design is extremely simple and minimalistic in comparison to other ocean liners of the past and current cruise ships, i would say they followed the rule "less is more" pretty good. I don't know what you're talking about.
I think the stern design in having a platform in the back of the ship is a big mistake. In heavy seas no one would be able to inhabit the area. The heavy seas would be pounding the area. I would rethink this design.
Sorry, but not unlike all the current mega-cruise ships, this ship’s appearance is horrible .... lacking the graceful, aesthetically pleasing lines of the classic great ocean liners we remember so fondly. This design may appeal to some, but I believe many more dislike the odd appearance of this vessel.
That thing is hideous. The French built some of the most beautiful ships to ever grace the seas, very easy on the eyes with fabulous lines. They even refitted their legendary yet vintage looking "ILE DE FRANCE" vessel of the 20's, into a ship capable of giving the newest of liners on the water a serious run for their money. How is this floating loaf of bread with humps on it a step forward? Nope!
The SS United States was the first super liner to utilize pre fabricated sections, and also the first liner to be welded (with the exception of riveting where the steel hull and aluminum superstructure meet)
I watched this originally on your Dailymotion and thank God it was easier to watch here with no interruptions. 😂This new France looks terrible: I hate it. But at the same time, I really hope she gets built. France could use another ship of state right about now. (still can't believe they made the mistake of calling the last France - my fourth most favorite liner of all time - the fastest liner in the world, when that was very obviously the United States - my second most favorite liner of all time; the research in this thing could've been a bit better XD)
I may not be smart or worldly but I know that ship building is the most complex thing in the world. They are beautiful and breath taking and I hope I get to see a ship one day
You know transparent aluminum has been invented it's been around since 2013 and it only consists of two ingredients aluminum shavings and glass AKA silica
The planned redesign was just plain hideous. I’m glad they never actually went through with the building process. Even the SS Norway post-1990 (with the two extra decks over the bridge) looked a hell of a lot better.
It was not "the fastest ship in the world." Even then or at any time . She was obsolete by the time of her building as transatlantic crossing was increasingly done by flight. By the end of the 60s the transatlantic liners were retired, and superannuation as cruise ships for which they were not designed.
The more I look at this new ship, the more I like it. Yes, it's really different from the older ships and those are indisputably gorgeous. But it's sleek and modern and makes me want to see what's inside. France has a long and proud maritime history and is known for elegance and style. I have confidence in their new ship. It sounds incredible ♥️
If you like the new look, watch the movie, Great Broadcast of 1938, it had W.C.Fields and Bob Hope. But the real star is the ship! Art deco all the way.
The proportions are all wrong on that design for the new France, & made even worse by maintaining the same proportions when scaling it down! Also while the original SS France had a hull that was very efficient for its size, those two tower-blocks would double its fuel-costs, along with creating huge instability problems if a severe storm is encountered (especially as it would be too slow to outrun one)! SS United States still holds the fastest blue ribbon. Lots of pride in this failed production but the “ fast” and loose statements takes away from the story.
If you don't want the same fate as the original SS France economy of scale 5,000 to 6,000 passengers in about 1,100 to 1,300 ft long it has to stand out amongst all the Oasis class the new icon class and the Mardi gras in the celebration
More proof that ship design is a lost art. This design is astoundingly ugly in so many ways and cannot even come close with the classic SS France. "Modern" need not be so dull and unbalanced. There are ways to incorporate modern technology in propulsion, safety and comfort while still preserving pretty lines from an aesthetic standpoint
I keep up with the shipping industry and it is 2022 at the point I'm watching this video and I haven't heard of any shipyard lay in a keel for a new SS France and you probably learn to hard lesson economy of scale other words 5,000 to 7000 passengers you won't need to charge nearly as much as you would for an 800 passenger ship and still make a huge profit that's what hurt the first SS France it became unprofitable by 1968 so it had to rely on government subsidies and then when there was a strike in 74 for more wages the government cut the subsidies off and followed it all to the Concord program I don't want to see this ship laid up in 5 years due to no government subsidies and unable to turn a profit for that field of guest
They certainly butchered the ship. Should have just made a whole new one! It looks awful ...the original style looks so much better. Leave it alone and build new!!
5,000 passengers that 800 is going to do that ship to an early retirement economy of scale the more passengers you have on board the less you have to charge for passenger that means more people can afford the sale on your ship don't be stupid about it or too prideful humble yourselves a little bit and make a large ship that's meant for the masses and the filthy rich
The old SS France was Beautiful this concept is just ugly . Which I suppose is on par with most modern cruise ships . It’s now almost 2024 so I gather they didn’t bother .

Your looking at a garish design
How old was the designer, 5 or 6? The Normandy was beautiful. This new France is not, heavy on the not.

Great video …the Normandie first and then the France where the most beautiful liners ever built. Sadly both are gone
When they added those extra decks to the Norway they turned a beautiful swan into an ugly duckling.
Yes they ruined it’s beautiful silhouette

As far as the design, they should have went with the “less is more” rule.
Indeed

@@pagmonreal nope, i don't like it. I just said that the OP has no clue what "less is more" means.
It looks like a yacht with hugely oversized funnels it looks weird
The new design of it ruins the legacy of the SS France/Norway. Why not just rebuild the original?
Pollution and "safety issues " just give It new technology :/
I prefer the old design
She was where I lived before being scrapped at anchor
Im soon 14 and even I can draw/design a ship that looks better.
The original France’s designers would have a heart attack, stroke, and aneurism all at once if they saw this horrendous and ugly design.
The original designers are turbo spinning in their graves
SS United States is still the Blue Ribbon fastest ship and is laid up in Philadelphia. TD Atlanta
Based on Crocs meets ugly Fiat Multipla, meets Citreon Picasso with Disney Tack!
Ghastly death of SS FRANCE, NORWAY at Alang!
2022 has come and gone, where is the ship?
Where????
steam turbines are very powerful but also very thirsty. On the SS Canberra we could burn 500 ton of heavy fuel oil a day.
I think the stern design in having a platform in the back of the ship is a big mistake. In heavy seas no one would be able to inhabit the area. The heavy seas would be pounding the area. I would rethink this design.
brings back memories...
My first cruise was on the Norway, formally the France, was a great ship for her age,
Even the SS Norway, post-1990 refit, looked a LOT better than whatever the hell they were trying to do here.
I am not gonna lie but damn the New boat gosh that thing looks ugly, Hell a Crab boat looks better.
It should have a glass bottom so they can see the old French fleet.
Sorry, but not unlike all the current mega-cruise ships, this ship’s appearance is horrible .... lacking the graceful, aesthetically pleasing lines of the classic great ocean liners we remember so fondly. Most odd ball esthetics I’ve seen in a ship. Everything appears out of proportion.
the hull was welded not soldered!
So what happened its now nearly 2024 and no sign of it even being built
12 knots is too slow, the Mini liner Ms. Sunnhordland from 1943 is faster than that and it's still in service!
That thing is hideous. The French built some of the most beautiful ships to ever grace the seas, very easy on the eyes with fabulous lines. Soldered? No. Welded.
Such a ridiculous and UGLY design. Frankenship. Glad this went nowhere.
My first cruise was on the France. That would have been about 2002.
Is anyone concerned that it looks nothing like the old one and beyond ugly!
So how long is it? You used meters? Why? We have no idea what that is? Just use simple feet and inches. Thankyou.
Only USA uses the imperial system - literally the rest of the entire world uses metric so of course they will use meters

In order to make ships as fast as they were with the power would be to go nuclear in other words a nuclear reactor creating steam running turbines
Don't even bother with this one. It is stupid to try to improve on a legend. Let it go.
