Normal Distribution in a Nutshell - 170 GRE Mathematics

  • Normal Distribution applies to heights, weights, IQs, and much else, but how can you be tested on it? This video will cover the key phrase ‘normally distributed’ and why you should look out for it.
I offer private GRE / GMAT tutoring online at a fixed rate of $140/hr. Please get in touch via the email below, or through my tutoring website: www.gretutorlo...
    Enquiries: philip@gretutorlondon.com
We must remember the 3 key percentages: 2%, 14% and 34% and how they are laid out on a bell curve.
From these, we can calculate that 68% of people lie within one standard deviation of the mean and 96% (or just a bit closer to 95%) lie within 2 standard deviations of the mean.
Do check out my other video on standard deviations if you want to learn more, but for this ‘normal distribution in a nutshell’ video, we can just leave it as a standardised measurement of spread.
Our two questions will be of medium and hard difficulty:
Q1. In a set of student exam results the 30th percentile corresponded to a score of 16 and the 40th percentile corresponded to a score of 27.
    Quantity A
    The 50th percentile score
    Quantity B
    38
Q2. The heights of a group of math teachers are normally distributed around the mean. If the median height is 175cm and the 84th percentile corresponds to a height of 181cm. Which of the following heights correspond to the 2nd percentile?
    A) 161cm
    B) 163cm
    C) 165cm
    D) 167cm
    E) 168cm

Dear Tutor, I understand concepts well but when I appeared in GRE, specially, in the second section of quant, I could not do well. And my timing problem I think also is a fact, but I struggled to understand the strategy of some questions to solve..and also for verbal, it was bad..If you have suggestions for when doing good in the first section of quant, how to do good in the second harder section, please share your suggestions... thank you

First of all this was a truly helpful video and thanks. I don't want to seem like a braggart but I got that 170 Q question correct and still I am struggling with some other questions, and I think that the hardest normal distribution questions are the ones that try to trick you with pure concepts such as the 'indicate all such statement' questions, and not the ones which require you to calculate an answer.

Hi Philip, I'm a big fan of your videos - love the simple and thorough explanations you've provided for a myriad of topics :)
I've been watching your videos for a few weeks now and I managed to get a perfect score in quant in my last two mocks. I'm planning to take the GRE in 8 days from today. Just wanted to check - is there a video or a couple of videos where you've summarised all the important concepts and formulas that a test taker should review in the last couple of days before the test? If not, any chance you can make one?!
    Eagerly waiting for your answer!
P.S. I will write a thorough review for your wonderful videos once done with the test (irrespective of the result).
    Thank you!

Hey, I haven't summarised everything, there is a bit too much. But a perfect score is insane, well done. My advice would be to focus on not making small mistakes and being rested rather than hunting down any super obscure topics though...

Thanks a ton for your prompt reply and amazing videos, Philip!
I took the test last week and unfortunately scored a 167 in Quant, despite scoring 170 in both the Power prep tests.
I was really hoping for a 170 so a bit disappointed there. I think I got put off by the experimental quant section, which was quite difficult. I usually finish and revise all or most of the questions within time but this time I couldn't even complete the experimental section in time (I'm guessing it was the experimental section because it went pretty bad and even a 167 wouldn't be possible if it had been scored). That affected my performance in the actual quant section and I somehow barely managed to finish the last quant section. Could you guide me on how I can best prepare for a perfect 170 in another attempt about 3 weeks from now? I had done the OG and OG Quant and Manhattan 5lb this time. But I don't know how accurately they represent the difficulty of the second quant section. Should I revise them all again or is there another resource that I could leverage for the higher level questions? I don't have the detailed report yet.
Also, I scored a V161, roughly in line with my mocks. My weaknesses are spread across the topics haha, so any advice on how I can possible increase my score by a few points in the next few weeks? I had done the OG, the OG Verbal Reasoning, and about half the RCs in the big book.
Sorry for the long message - I am really hoping to score in the 335 range so I can try to get a good scholarship. Thank you so much in advance!!
      - A big fan of all your concepts, tricks and advice :)

Hi, I have been following your videos regularly, and thank you very much for the detailed explanation and tricks. They are very helpful.
HI, that was a very informative video o Normal distribution. In q1 it is not mentioned as normal distribution so we cannot determine the answer. What is the answer if the distribution in Q1 is normal? I still believe the answer is D, because even though the distribution is normal, we have no SD and there is no way of telling if 50% is greater or less than 38. Please, correct me, if I am wrong.
