    I am doing a little research on different version of the lyrics of Whisky in the Jar and this is close to being my favourite. I would change a few words and slip in an extra verse. I think the longer the story it tells, the better a song it is. I did like the little musical nod to Thin Lizzie in this.

    • @clifftower
      @clifftower 10 років тому

      How many different versions have you come across? I know of 3

    • @joshvetter5054
      @joshvetter5054 10 років тому +1

      There's no "nod" to Thin Lizzie. The song in its entirety is an Irish folk song first commercially released by The Dubliners in 1968. The actual story of the song dates back to the 1600s.

    • @jasonsexton8869
      @jasonsexton8869 10 років тому

      Cliff Ryan Five for me. The Dubliners, Thin Lizzy, The High Kings, Metallica, and Darby O'Gill. Favorites would definitely be The Dubliners and Darby's versions. Metallica comes in third. A moderately distanced forth would be thin lizzy. They lose points for electric guitar noodling before the intro and at several points during the song. I think the high kinds have done other songs better. They did this okay, but it isn't my favorite iteration of this song by a long shot. Kinda sad because I like the high kings.

    • @clifftower
      @clifftower 10 років тому

      jason sexton
      I love the high kings version, as well as Ryan's Fancy.
      I was thinking more of different versions of the song. As an example, some versions mention Molly, and others Jennie. Another is how the song starts..some say "..the far farmed Kerry Mountains..." other versions say ..the Cork and Kerry Mountains..."

    No it's an irish traditional song, and the origin is unknown. :) High Kings covered it from the Thin Lizzy version. Listen it that is very good too :)

  • @Merryrobin
    @Merryrobin 13 років тому

    @jdg120789
    I found this on wikipedia.
    "The song's exact origins are unknown. A number of its lines and the general plot resemble those of a contemporary broadside ballad "Patrick Fleming" (also called "Patrick Flemmen he was a Valiant Soldier") about an Irish highwayman executed in 1650....In the book The Folk Songs of North America, folk music historian Alan Lomax suggests that the song originated in the 17th century..."

    Coming from a percussionist/drummer standpoint, the time signature is the same for both songs. Thin Lizzy/Metallica do a slower rendition that has a different set of lyrics and a story that has a different out come. The only thing here that is similar to Thin Lizzy's is the little lead melody before the song. The rest of it is closer to someone like the Dubliners, just a little slower.

    They use the correct version of the song. I must give them proper due for that. The way the perform it is a different matter entirely. They have excellent showmanship. I find their style detracts from the song though. Far too much pop influence. The Dubliners do a live version of this song that is exemplary.
