- Actor / singer Julian Ovenden was one of several new characters in the "Downton Abbey" series, being introduced as 'Charles Blake' in the autumn of 2013. He is also to be seen in ITV3 re-runs of "Foyle's War" as the pilot son of the eponymous detective. He is seen here in duet with Sierra Boggess in one of the most beautiful and moving songs in the entire Rodgers and Hammerstein catalogue. It comes from "Carousel" and was featured in the John Wilson Orchestra's excellent annual celebration of Broadway and Film Musicals at the 2010 Proms in London's Royal Albert Hall.
Julian Ovenden. When I found you on UA-cam you made my life. My husband passed away January 2018. We met in high school and I miss him so much. You are a wonderful singer and so handsome and delightful. I am 93 years old. You have made me want to keep living.I enjoy your singing your videos your movies.
Oh this is just beautiful!! X
Yes, Flossie, he is special. I look at him while he and Sierra sing, and he makes me float in a higher level, I forget everything and everybody else. He says so much with his naughty pretty sexy eyes!
So beautiful just beautiful. You said it better thankyou
Do sweet
Okay, I will let you skip the queue and go ahead of me, Flossie.
I'm a man in his seventies, but this duo are so beautiful, they bring tears to my eyes.
Me too I'm 69 x
Us too - we reconnected after 50 years realizing we missed our chance to be together for all those years - now with what few years we have left together - we will make the best of them. 💖
@@mardicole4202 Well, I'm77. Today, the love of my life will probably die. And NOT from COVID 19. All I can think of is the song from Carousel, "If I loved You" And I did. For 77 years. Good Bye Sweet Love. Its hard to type through these tears.
@@chrisgordon5719 My sincerest condolences 😪. You will have many sweet memories to remember of your lives together.
Beautiful music has no age limits! I hope I will always appreciate music of this caliber.
I consider this the most beautiful song ever written for American Musical Theater, and this performance is the best I've ever heard in my 74 years. Sierra is breathtaking in every way and Julian magnificent.
Their rendition of Make Believe is also breathtaking.
I almost cried by the time the song ended - how can something be this beautiful? Absolutely brilliant rendition of one of my favourite songs of all time.
Almost?? I'm in floods of tears.
The music from this aria is beautiful. People used to walk the earth who wrote stuff like this.
Considered to be the MOST beautiful song that Richard Rodgers ever wrote and he wrote many! Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. What a dynamic musical team - those two!
perfect song, perfect singers, perfect orchestration...what more?
Just watched A CHRISTMAS CAROL: THE MUSICAL and Ovenden plays Fred Anderson, Scrooge's nephew. What an astounding rendition of this song -- his vocal placement with this wide range is impeccable. He's such an astounding actor and sends emotion through his eyes, he did it in CHRISTMAS CAROL and does it again here.
Sierra Boggess is a jewel: gorgeous and her voice is as clear as a glass bell.
Love this pairing.
Heard Sierra for the first time about 7 years ago. Fell in love with her voice and her beauty. I'm 78 and heard the best over the years. She is at the top. She is a soprano that has a soft but commanding, aaaaand romantic voice. She is a soprano that chose to sing the pops. It was the right decision.
Wow! Ovenden's baritone drips gold, sung with passion. These two need to be paired together, two beautiful people, beautiful voices. The sky's the limits!
+Song Thief Baritone...what baritone?
Ja, no, he is a tenor. Amazing...but a tenor...
Most definitely Baritone.
If I loved you : from the musical play "Carousel" : duet soprano and baritone
It's written for baritone, yes, but Ovenden is a tenor.
I love how she stays in character while he's singing by showing the sadness on her face.
On top of those outstanding voices they both also have KILLER looks!! How much can a person take?!!!
One can take what one can! Know what, if they're faithful, trusted and genuine, they're ahead of 98 pct of humans. I hope they possess those virtues. I truly appreciate their talent, beauty and sincerity by sharing their gift / talent of the singing voices. All we have to do is enjoy and appreciate their gift. Wish I had a measureable gift to share.. Fan of Julian's diverse talent in Foyles War, in the past but lovely. A fan.
Her voice is so pure and clear.
Thank goodness that these young actors and actresses perform these beautiful Roger and Hammerstein music and if they would still do some of these plays again the younger people would see what singing is really about
he has 1/4 the sound needed for this rep. shove the mic down his throat even further than it already is to make it sound close to what it should.
I’m in tears by the end. Both of them inhabit the duet beautifully.
Broadway producers pay attention here is gold in person.
"People Will Say We're In Love", "We Could Make Believe" and "If I Loved You" all have a similar vibe, a cautious longing for deeper involvement, a tentative promise of future commitment. I love all three songs, and all three very different musicals.
Exactly! Lovely and pure!
I just read on a Downton site that this man is a wonderful singer! Oh my, beyond wonderful!
You should see and hear his "Maria " from west side story. It will blow you away. What a voice.and so handsome
This was a thrilling duet by two extraordinary talented singers!
I'm just totally in love with Julian Ovenden
💕Me too 🥰
SIERRA IS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL AND A GREAT TALENT!
FEW TALENTS COME AROUND THAT ARE THIS GREAT IN A GENERATION. BUT THANKFULLY SIERRA IS HERE!
JULIAN AND SIERRA! Alerts of the world! These two young singers are absolutely phenomenal. They perform this just about as well as Gordon McRae and Shirley Jones in the original movie version of Oklahoma. In short that is unbelievably wonderful! Bravo!
You know! I think I’ll go and watch the movie again x
What an orchestra!
These two are perfection.. rival Jones and McRae... awesome!
They are all in sync! The symphony, the conductor, baritone and soprano!!!!! Super talented!!!!
timeless, beautiful, ageless, classic, powerful....
Loved him in Downton Abbey…Didn’t know he could sing
I've been playing the songs of Mr. Rodgers for more than fifty years, and this couple is the most effective interpreter of them that I've seen in a very long time. The timbres of their voices, their diction, musicianship, and even their acting abilities are mesmerizing. This is genuinely superb musical theater.
I wished they had made a cd of their singing together!
I listen to this so many times and it is so beautiful. What a wonderful talent.
A standing ovation from California for this "pearl of great price"......
His voice is just amazing. Such control!
That wink from John right at the beginning of the set...makes me swoon and the whole performance is just breath taking.xx
Truly lovely
She sounds exquisite! They both do.
I was there to see them sing his song, delightful
Oh, my goodness, this is So beautiful……
A beautiful rendition of one of the great Rogers and Hammerstein duets.
I wonder how many men had heart strings tugged but didn't want to admit, when listening
The word is plenty a classic 😢
One here.
This one certainly. Not embarrassed to freely admit the song brings tears to my eyes, easily.
Me too. The reprise of this song at the end of the film gets me every time.
Loved him in both Foyles War and Downton! Amazing to discover he’s a singer as well!
Some serious beautiful going on there! Beautiful singing, beautiful orchestral work.
Such a beautiful song sung just beautifully....absolutely sublime performance. Very well done. Bravo.
Oh my, what great performances of this beautiful classic. The interpretations were brilliant.
Man these two are phenomenal....I am crazy about her voice and beauty and his voice with his emotional impact is beyond stunning.....both very moving singers. Bravo!
Truly was Sierra who pointed my heart in the direction of love for classical music
I love JO. Just discovered his wonderful voice
You said it better thankyou
I know Sierra is just getting started with School of Rock on Broadway, but someone has to find a way to get these two together on Broadway - maybe a revival of Carousel or Oklahoma.
+Don Browning -- 100% agree! They are heaven to hear and luminous as a pairing. Perhaps a revue of great musical duets -- cut out all the filler and focus on them.
+Don Browning I would rather see her in Opera something that has artistic value. She could do so much better than either of those. Maybe Puccini?
+Carey Coleman That's extreme to say that Carousel and Oklahoma don't have artistic value. They truly are musical works of art, whether that art falls under your preference or not. Picasso and Vermeer painted extremely differently, but both were exquisite, relentless artists. The same sentiment can be applied to opera vs. theater, in my opinion.
+Carey Coleman Unfortunately, while Ms. Boggess has a beautiful voice, she doesn't have the weight in her voice or the volume to be an opera singer. I can tell just by listening to her and by the fact that she needs a microphone right up in her face that she would not be adequately heard in an opera. Opera singers always sing unamplified, projecting their voices out over a large orchestra into a large theater. Very rarely, in big outdoor venues with terrible acoustics, opera singers will be amplified, but they are never amplified in an opera house or when they perform in classical recitals or concerts. As for Puccini, the soprano roles of Puccini were for the most part written not only for real opera singers, but for real opera singers with a heavier type of real operatic voice than Ms. Boggess possesses. Other than the chin wobble, which denotes some tension in the neck and jaw, Ms. Boggess produces her vocal tone well. She has a great Broadway type voice, but not an opera voice. And by the way, musical theater music does have artistic value.
+Don Browning oh god how i would cry tears of joy
this has literally become my favourite song in the space of a week 😂
I'm so glad to have discovered Julian Ovenden! Wonderful! 💖
Stainlessstainless, if she. Is awful, I suggest you have your hearing aids checked or replaced , you are missing out on much. Jersey jack
Julian Ovenden acts this beautifully..?.
An age of scintillating beauty - the era of my departed mother - another departed beauty
Royal Albert Hall makes the difference - great rendition in homage to Jones and Mcrae
Breath taking! What a performance. Well done both
Having these excellent videos with close ups of their faces while singing gives one a sensation of being next to them while they perform. It moves you/me in ways I could not have imagined. "BRAVO!
Just beautiful
Glad you think so!
Love Julien' baritone. Compliments Sara's soprano perfectly.
Julian is a tenor not a baritone
Sierra Boggess has fantastic voice. Just a fabulous ❤
She must be brought over to Disney. That voice..
+François Bessing Well she did play Ariel in the Disney Broadway production. Does that count?
+ShoMeSho Oh no no she must be made to voice an original Disney princess.
+François Bessing agreed
That note and tone at 5:04!!!
Me too they are brilliant
Sierra and Julian are commensurate singers! They sing this romantic song with such passion and sincerity. This is just one of the great pieces from the Rogers and Hammerstein play/movie “Carousel”.
I listen over and over - so beautiful!!
Commensurate? LMFAO.
This duet by Julian and Sierra is simply wonderful. Has the gentleman below indicates this is about the finest interpretation of this Rogers and Hammerstein song that he has ever seen. I totally agree. Sierra's voice is magical and Julian sings his part of the duet brilliantly. Bravo!
Well... I'd have to put the great Gordon MacRae's voice in a league above Mr. Overden's fine baritone... Sierra Boggess' tonal quality throughout her range is delightful and at times melodically stunning... when she emotionally inflects upon a note the results can be amazing...
Patrick Kehoe Listen to John Raitt's beautiful version on UA-cam (without sticking his mouth in a microphone). That is good singing!
+Patrick Kehoe Julian Ovenden is a tenor!!!
They are fantastic together.
Well done. Best show tune ever written.
they are wonderful!
IT IS JUST SO BEAUTIFUL
These two are a fantastic combination and I just love Sierra 💘
they were both fantastic. It made me get the chills
Words wouldn't come in an easy way, if.. I.. loved.. you
Both fantastic and beautiful song making me feel sad
These two together make magic
Brilliant
onions are somewhere near me again.
So exquisite, from both these singers, not to mention the conductor and orchestra. I love the way John Wilson sort of gives a little "whoh," expelling air and showing us (not purposefully, I think) the seriousness with which he approaches this piece. Or it could be letting off steam from the piece they played just before, but either way, he takes this concert seriously, and to heart. I especially love the control and just-right constraint Miss Boggess employs with her voice.
She is utterly sublime.
John Wilson is an excellent conductor and leads a marvelous orchestra. Bravo!!!
Can't stand conductors. They're mostly just arm wavers who steal all the credit from the amazing musicians.
Beautiful. Brought a tear to my eye.
This has got to be one of the most beautiful romantic song ever written along with All The Things You Are
woooooow the best of the best!!!! good Julian Ovenden and Sierra Boggess!!!
I wonder how they are able to sing this song without tearing up. Must be because they have sung it so often.
