I'm really pleased with this! It works like a charm ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ Takes less time than my old electric sharpener because it can take more off the knife faster, and then it smooths out nicely with the finer grit polisher. I don't know how long it will last before the grit wears away, but I wouldn't mind having to replace it every once in a while.

I have a 'coticule', also known as a 'Belgian block', a natural stone, quarried in the Ardennes near the city of Liege. I inherited this stone from my granddad. The coticule quarry has been reopened for commercial exploitation a couple of years ago, after it had been out of production for decades. The grid is 4000-6000; it is a water stone. The water stays on the surface, so the stone does not need to be soaked, just spray water on top of it. The metal and stone particles make a fine slurry that can polish to a mirror shine. Nowadays a coticule is rather expensive, depending its size it can cost a couple of hundreds. Each time I sharpen my tools I remember my granddad and I thank him for this wonderful gift.

Great video. I still use sandpaper on the final stage but use diamonds for all stages prior the the final honing. Want a Shapton ceramic or glass stone in the 6 to 8 thousand grit for my final honing stage. Hate keeping a tub of water for the stones to soak in.
with 8 thousand grit you should obtain a REAL MIRROR surface.
Great recommendations, and really nicely done video. I have one question. Why do you bother getting the entire back flat, and not just the last 1/8” or so? I typically just elevate the handle end of the chisel blade by about 0.125mm or so (e.g. on a small metal ruler under that end of the blade surface), to get the chisel up at about 1/15th of a degree or so. That allows just the last 1/8” or so to quickly become a flattened cutting surface. It takes about 1 minute with a new or poorly maintained blade, verses maybe 15 minutes the other way.
I know that many of the better Scandinavian, Japanese, British and some other chisels have a concave back to reduce the amount of metal you have to remove, just for this exact purpose. I used to do it the way you showed, until I got my first white hardened Japanese chisel. About an hour into still trying to work the back flat, I thought that there must be abetter way. It was at that point I started working on just the last bit of blades, about 35 years ago, which then became part of my sharpening workflow that allows me quickly keep my blades sharp at all times.

You can't use the ruler trick on chisels. Well, you can, but you screw up registration. You're only supposed to use the ruler trick on plane irons. I don't even use it there.
@@1pcfred - I just use my 60-grit grinding wheel for all my Tasai chisels, since it's much faster than messing about with stones and rulers. Just kidding.
@@amdenis 60 grit is OK for hollow grinding. Once a bevel is hollow ground then honing goes faster.
What is the brand name of the diamond sharpening stone you are using?
hes using a VERITAS honing guide that you can buy at Lee Valley.. both i would highly recommend indeed

What is the 6000 ceramic stone called? Is that Shapton Glass 6000 grit?
It it just me or does he completely skip over removing the burr?
it is just you. It should not has burr if you work corectly.
I mean we’ve already spent how much? The diamond stone, the ceramic stone, the bench grinder? A beginner isn’t going to need all that. Just a water stone and at most a honing jig, although it’s best to learn how to do it by hand so you will always have this skill.

Surprised you didn't strop the plane iron before using it. There is still a micro burr from the 6000 grit stone, and it needs to be removed.

YES !!!!! Very good question, especialy when buy new ones very expensive.

Was the chisel on the wheel long enough to heat up that much?
If it stayed cool enough to hold in your bare hand, it didn't get hot enough to lose it's temper

Once he said bench grinder I stopped the video. No need to go any further. No way I'm grinding my chisels. I don't care what kind of grinding stone you're using.
I know there's more to it then that to end up with a sharp tool. You never removed the wire edge from the iron, after you sharpened the bevel.
Wrong work. You must slide on entire surface of the stone to keep in time its shape.
