A wizard does give everything they have to become a wizard, only to break their wand and cast it all aside.
Technically he’s not addicted, just lazy. Being addicted would to seek more magic for a stronger power than the wand. It is a real fact that people can become more depressed the less they move around, like spending most of your day watching tv or laying in bed.
