Creating A Blended Background In Oils For A Horse Portrait Painting

    Create a background that doesn’t compete with your subject but suggests a sense of depth behind your subject, thereby placing it in a
    3-Dimensional space. Listen to the narrative or read the subtitles to find out more.
    To create a blended background with oils I will use a larger proportion or medium than normal (such as Winsor & Newton's Liquin Original or Gamblin Galkyd) to create a thinner paint consistency which allows me to move the paint around and blend subtle changes of tone across a larger area without leaving a lot of brush marks in the paint. If you refer to see the brushstrokes and have more obvious changes of tone then use the buttery texture of oils straight out of the tube or mix with just a bit of medium (using a little of Liquin Original or Galkyd will help to speed up drying time too).
