Anyone else get the biggest smile on their face when Daniel walked up?!
It’s so good to finally see Daniel again! Y’all should film a pickin, piano playin, & harmony vlog while he’s in town.
yesterday i was going through downtown on my way to lake murray and i drove by your store!! my husband was in charge of the GPS and i said "hey roots and refuge is somewhere around here! i think she said fulmer street?" and he was leading me along and surprised me by going down that street! i recognized the store from your old video. i cant wait to visit when it's all up and running! 💛

I know this is probably something that you don’t even think about because you’re just genuinely a good person but I want you to know how much I love that you will go to the farmers market and support a farmer even if it’s not organic because you would still rather support a farmer that is local. And there’s no judgment or ill feelings to that farmer because he may not practice the same growing methods. I love that
Jess when you told how you plant seeds and still come check the next day knowing that it's too soon that smile and laugh and look on your face made me say to myself "that is joy".
So thankful that you share with us
Its so good to see you and Daniel together, he is such a sweet friend of yours and that smile just lights up the screen.
Daniel has the BEST energy!
May I ask who is Daniel? I don't mean to sound dumb but I have watch Jess for a while but I must have missed him along the way!
He seems like such a light hearted gentle person ✨️ the world needs more people like that
I visited my very first farmers market Saturday morning! I bought local honey, home grown tomatoes, peaches, and nectarines... Everything is so delicious! Thank you for inspiring me to think outside the grocery store! Much love! ❤️
Good for you. And you are helping local farmers!
I said out loud " I knew it was him" love seeing Daniel in your vlogs he's so cheerful
Singing hymns until the wee hours, gave it away. 🤣❤
Jess you are doing that the hard way😉 blanch the tomatoes skins peel right off so easy 💜
ONLY tomato recipe that I need is one for a mater sammich & I been making those since before you were born!!! 😂🤣😂🤣
My Gramps always told me that when I met a new dog to bow to it to show it I respected it. I've ALWAYS bowed to every dog I cross paths with & I find that most will bow back!!!
I have been missing Daniel and have wondered how he is doing. Thank you for including him in this video. His music in your videos always bring such peace.
I miss his music in her garden tours…it’s something that wooed my heart to her garden channel 🪴
@@KareMom4 Same here! I've noticed she's been playing his stuff of late. Maybe she was all along & I just missed it, it's been known to happen. 🙄🤪🤣
It gives me so much joy when she plays his guitar picking in the background, it's part of what drew me to her channel. So many blessings all around! 😍🙏❤
So glad you mentioned about dehydrating the tomato skins and then turning them into tomato powder. That's what I did last week when I made roasted tomato soup.
I love that you got Iris from Schreiners! When I was in beauty school, I had a weekly client named Lois and we got to talking one day about flowers, and I mentioned that Irises were my very favorite since childhood. The next time she came in, she brought be a massive box of all different kinds of iris! I didn't put 2 and 2 together, but her last name was Schreiner! Lois Schreiner, and that was her iris garden! LOL I felt so silly for not knowing, but what a massively lovely gift!
That’s awesome!💜💜
What a great story! And so sweet of her to bring you a bunch :-)
@@daisyblooms4813 I know, right? She was the kindest lady!
I'm so happy to see Daniel. As soon as you said singing. I knew it!
Exactly my thoughts!
@Roots and Refuge Farm It’s called “Mother of Millions” and it is an absolute beast! You have to really, really keep an eye on it. My girlfriend had it in a flower pot on her back porch and now she still has them popping up in between the bricks two years later. 😳
I agree 100%! Here in Australia it has become out of control in the bush and national parks - it is so hard to get rid of and has been listed as an ‘invasive and significant environmental weed’. That is in a hot, humid climate, similar to where you are I image. Please be careful!
I literally came here to say thing. EEK! Very invasive.
It really did my heart good to see Daniel walking down your driveway! It was like seeing an old friend who had been away for a long time. I do so miss hearing his beautiful music being played on your channel. Hope he pulls up a chair, stays awhile, and picks his guitar awhile. May God bless Daniel's new venture! 😍😍😎😎🙏🙏
Hello Daniel! Then again I knew he was coming as I watched his last video on his channel. 😀
DANIEL!!!!🥰❤🥰❤🥰❤🥰❤ OMGosh!!
I've been wondering when we were ever gonna see him again?!? Seeing him BLESSES ME SOOOO MUCH!! I miss me some Daniel!
Jess, just a heads up, I am in Sumter S.C. and I believe we are gonna have an early winter, my 50year old black walnut is dropping its leaves now and it is never wrong.
Wow! I love that insight. We are in the “midlands” of NC. I don’t remember this kind of weather in August here either, and I have been here most of my life. We have to pay attention to our plants. Sometimes they know more than we do. Thank you for the heads up!
I am in SW Michigan and our walnut is dropping the biggest walnuts I have seen in years.
@@mlee7037 Piedmont NC here and I was telling my family in the beginning of summer that I felt it was going to be an earlier, colder, wetter winter than we have had in several years and the signs seem to be pointing that way, for sure. I will be pulling some of my crops in 2-3 weeks so I can sow winter cover crops. I want them to have well established roots before it gets too cold
May I ask what you are using for cover crops?
@@hollydegroot6510 I am using a broadleaf mustard mostly that I will not eat. It can be used as a green fertilizer if you chop and drop and mix in your soil. It helps with pests as well as soil born fungus and other diseases. Then I am also going to use turnips and kale like a cover crop as they are all very frost hardy and edible. I will be growing other winter crops but not as a cover crop.
My kids and husband now always describe store-bought tomatoes as tasting like disappointment. 😄
I only peel my tomatoes for canning whole, halved or diced tomatoes. I use an immersion blender because it is fast and we don't mind the peels in tomato sauce or salsa. A couple of years ago I started coring and quartering tomatoes and putting them in the freezer after you talked about coring and scoring them. It has made my life so much simpler in tomato harvest season! Love your tips.
The term disappointment so completely fits so much of the store bought produce, tomatoes, peaches that go from hard to spoiled never ripening, etc. Love it!!
@@teresamariner4238 absolutely. It looks so delicious but isn't. They thought it was a perfect description when I told them Jess's opinion a couple of years ago so that is now what they always say
I tell anybody around the tomatoes at the store that those are going to taste like disappointment and that it's really easy to grow their own ☺️
@@shandysgarden yeeeees!!!
Good to see Daniel, and Daniel is looking good! Looking healthy and handsome.
I throw my tomatoes in the freezer after coring them but I don't bother to score because the skin slide right off without scoring. But here's a trick... I just throw them all in Walmart bags and put them in the freezer and it works just fine.
Jessica do you have of an Amish community around you? We have one in our area and they have an Amish produce market twice a week all summer long. Great place to get bushels and bushels of vegetables at reasonable prices.
Jess, your blessings are so wonderful. Yesterday I went to Amish country with my friend. I came home with 3 pecks of tomatoes, one peck of sweet peppers, 1/2 peck of peaches (still harvesting here), 6 softball sized bell peppers for stuffing, and three acorn squash I will also stuff. I cut up tomatoes and roasted them overnight, then ran everything through the food mill, cooked it for several additional hours in the oven to make a thicker sauce, and preserved 8 quarts of sauce. I also saved the skins which are in the dehydrator to make my own paste. The peppers are diced and in the freezer for winter meals, I also grated 2 gallons of zucchini for additions to food over the winter. I have a couple minor things to get finished this week, but the major stuff is done, the kitchen is relatively clean (dishwasher ran 3 times today), and my sons got their first ever seafood boil today. We even cut the leftover corn off the cob to freeze for cottage pie this winter. I also did a restock on my spices, and discovered I had many of them restocked in my own cupboard. Dear nephew and I combined everything, labeled and placed them in mason jars. I think my staples are ready for winter, even if I'm not.
Tomorrow is my first day of school with students. I received one new one over the summer, so this week will be a challenge as we acclimate to one another. (I teach special education to kiddos with autism and co-morbid disorders - and if they are in my room, they probably have a significant behavior or six). I probably overdid it this weekend with preservation, but I'm loving seeing jars and bags fill and be preserved for my family if there is a crisis. I'll get good rest tonight, and tomorrow will be fabulous!
I haven't gotten much from my garden at all this year. My tomatoes look lovely, but haven't produced a single fruit. I've had a few small peppers, but nothing consistent. I've gotten 3 butternut squash that aren't yet ripe, and 2 baby melons that aren't ripe. Thank goodness my herbs have been consistent this summer. I'm harvesting, drying and storing tea.
I wish you bright blessings!
Several friends have not had the normal results from their gardens that they usually do. Seems like something is off this year. My garden did mostly wonderful. I shared the extra abundance with them and canned what I could.
Completely agree with your viewpoint on local vs always strictly certified organic. Thankyou for supporting local folks feeding their families!
Hello Katie
Oh man, it’s been awhile since we saw Daniel. Nice to see him again.
We knew that plant as Mother of millions"..... each little piece that drops is a new baby!!! Millions of em!! 😊⚡🙏💙
That is DEFINITELY mother of a 1000 babies lol! They will grow EVERYWHERE. Have fun with that one 😂
I bought four of these plants at a garage sale..omg, they breed like rabbits!!
Just an FYI, Jess. The plant you have is a Mother of Thousands. It's squattier and lighter in color than the Mother of Millions. Both are extremely prolific and any plantlet that falls off of the leaf will quickly grow and start producing more "babies' before you know it becoming invasive. They are beautiful plants, but are highly toxic to animals and small children. Keep the chickens, and pets away and don't let the kids play with them. Other common names for it is the Alligator plant, Mexican hat plant, and Devil's backbone.
They are horrible in Florida 😬😬😬
Ol Daniel has been workin out! He’s lookin’ good 😊 Been wondering about him a lot, then saw his new video a few days ago. Glad to see your old friend at your new farm!
I had beautiful tomatoes this year, thanks to your teaching Jess. I have sandy soil. So this year I dug 3 shovels full of the sandy soil out and set it aside, I mixed two bags of organic soil, and one bag of manure in my wheel barrel, I filled the hole 1/3 of the way with the mixed soil, then put an egg in the bottom, then cracked the egg with a knife, put a 1/4 cup of garden tone in the hole, then planted my tomato plant the rest of the way with the soil, then with the sandy soil, I made a moat around the hole to keep the water in the spot, it worked well,it held the water right where I wanted it,the base of the plant did not rot, I only watered the plant at the base in the moat, I had so many tomatoes from just 8 plants. My beefsteak tomatoes were 6+inches across, and my Celebrity tomatoes were 4 inches wide. Best haul of tomatoes I have ever had. Thank you Jess for teaching me about an egg in a hole.
Hello Deborah
Daniel has a bass voice like Don Williams had. It was beautiful and soulful.
Hello kathphlox
Day 2 of tomato eating (ever) for me. Browned butter has made me a tomato lover. Thank you!! And I can't wait to try the roasted salsa.
I loved mixing lemon basil and lime basil to make tea with local honey OMG
And made several types of basil teas and one of my friends loved them all
Oh, good to see Daniel and his sweet face. ♥️
You can get organic food in bulk from Azure Standard. I have it used it for things I can't grow and have been very pleased. It was fantastic to see Daniel! Just watching your friendship in the vlog blesses me. Thank you.
Thank you!!!
Yep, Jess, that's exactly what I do: I support our local farmers by buying from them, that which I cannot grow/raise myself. Boatloads of appreciation for local farmers!
Yay!!!!! DANIEL!!!! I WAS JUST thinking about him. ❤️ So good to see him.
Ahh Daniel!!! Somehow I knew when I saw the pic of the food on your counter with your pretty art on your beverage.... I was like ooo Daniel must be in town.
Good to see Daniel's face again.
Daniel seems to be such a kind, gentle soul. Thanks for sharing him with us.
So glad to see Daniel hanging out with you again. He's a special friend and it shows whenever the two of you are together.
Freezing the tomatoes in bags like that can lead to happy accidents... I found a bag of tomatoes from last year buried in the freezer yesterday. Since this year's garden ended up getting set aside due to the high Temps and moving, those tomatoes were indeed a happy accident.
Great to see Daniel from a psalmist grows he's such a blessing
DANIEL! I literally squealed when I saw him walk up :) That made me smile from ear to ear. Feels like the old times
Oh good! I’ve been wondering how Daniel was doing! Happy to see him.
YAY Daniel!! You have been missed
Wow! Daniel looks soooo good. God bless him and his family.
😊💕🙏🏻🇨🇦
IT'S DANIEL!! STRAWBERRY BLESSINGS DANIEL!! How exciting! I was wondering about your sweet friend.
So good to see Daniel on a video and hear his music in your background! I can’t think of anything more wonderful than staying up late singing hymns.
so good to see daniel again.
to me the energy of y’all together is two little best friend kids💚
Oh, it’s so good to see Daniels smile again. What a lovely man 😁
The cottage garden is coming along lovely!
In my experience, irises will spill over into pathways and are best kept in the background where they will flower well above the melee. I would plant your irises well behind the rudbeckia/echinacea (which will stay much better behaved). The iris greens will make a fabulous backdrop against the wall.
Last year I bought a bushel of tomatoes for $50!! I canned them! This year so far I have only canned 4 quarts. But I made sauce 3x. Still waiting for these Tom to grow in RI!!!
Thank you Jess! What you just taught us today would have saved me 40 years of skinning the the tomatoes via the boil water \ ice water method! Awesome!
Oh don't you know it! I'm not ever going to boil/ice water the tomatoes ever again!
Oh my goodness, Daniel...what a joyous surprise.
Oh!! A Psalmist Grows! Loving the manna that I am getting this season. I am just sittin here smiling! Thanks Jess.
Amen honey I'm with you had to buy tomatoes this year because mine just didn't do much. Put up all you can because price is just going up
How wonderful to see Daniel! I was wondering about him recently and it's good to see him again!
Those elephant ear plants in front of your house fairly make my heart sing!😍 They are so majestic!
Well Hello Daniel! So good to see him there with yas. Thanks for the mater tips Jess. Always blessing us out here.
I've been thinking about Daniel a LOT lately. Good to see him in the flesh!!! Give him a hug for me!!! 🤗🤗🤗
How I wish you had filmed all the hymn singing. Soul refreshing.
I really should have created a UA-cam page called “The Crabby Suburban Gardner”. So. Many. Things. Have gone wrong this season. Today, after planting 40 tomato plants I finally had enough to do some canning today. First, my mini-harvest only made 3 jars WTH. Second, the giant canning pot I got in spring actually started leaking at the handle! Third, my lids burst! Last week I recovered from Salmonella from fermenting for the first time. Tip: Don’t Mess up your ferment. My crabby list goes on and on. I am really trying to be positive but I’m so tired. On the flip side my garden is truly a healthy gorgeous productive paradise. Help me stay positive folks!
Hang in there! That's a tough season! When things like that happen to me im told im gaining wisdom 🙁 lol in the end it will all be worth it! You are an overcomer!!! Take care and God bless!
Holy cow that's a lot! I'm so sorry!
I do happy to see Daniel.God Bless from Missouri.
So
I’m happy to see Daniel looking hale and hearty! I’ve been missing seeing him occasionally on your channel. Glad you’re all well and rich in tomatoes!
DANIEL! I have been missing his music in your beautiful videos!
Wow so happy to see Daniel. He is like you Jessica; he always has a smile on his face.
So nice to see your friend Daniel and his beautiful smile, what a blessing ❤️🥰🙏🏻
DANIEL!!!!! I have missed him and his music SOOOO much. Love him!
So good to see Daniel on one of your vlogs! Wish we could hear some of that beautiful music you sing together! ♥♥
I will be buying most of my tomatoes even though my homegrown ones are rockin but I had room for 30 romas that I grew myself. So far we’ve gotten 40 quarts but we will need about 100 more…we love our tomatoes!
My family has been buying produce from the same people for a long time.
I trust them, and their prices are fair.
You can also get canning advice too!
BTW your egg in the hole trick is the reason for my fabulous production. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!
♥️👍🙏🇺🇸🤓
If you like the egg, try burying a fish beneath it. Just be sure to cover it with a good dusting of limestone so the animals won't come unearth it.
@@milliethemillinator3154 I saw something abt the fish, wouldn’t fish fertilizer do the same thing?
@@milliethemillinator3154 we did this when we were kids and used to go fishing. Now I’m living in that same house I grew up in. We are right on a lake (dam actually) but the banks are steep and I’m pretty crippled so fishing is out. I’m 65.🤓
@@seekwisdom5102 probably so but its a way to use up parts of fish you don't eat.I use to leave my fish heads when I purchased fish now I want it ALL.lol I don't do fish soup or broth ( from the fish heads) .
@@seekwisdom5102 I have chickens and eggs are abundant in the spring. Basically they are free, also I lightly mulched with grass clippings for a nitrogen boost. I am building compost and doing everything on the cheap.🤓
We love the half asleep pajama Jess too, lol, editing Jess is a funny lady tell her your the star and stop judging her! 😂✌🏻🙏🏼❤️🍅🍅🐄📚🌸🐝🌻🙌
Dang Daniel is looking good! So nice to see him on your channel 🙂
Oh miss Jess you are such an inspiration an such a Joy 🥰🥰🥰 and it was nice to see Daniel again
OH, MY HEART! Thank you for including Daniel in this video. How ironic, I watched one of your older videos recently, and it got me wondering how he was doing! 💛
Mother of thousands or flea plant. Those little babies pop off and grow everywhere! Cute, but very invasive!
It’s definitely encouraging to see you using tomatoes that you bought. Because I know that’s something I’ll have to do to preserve something like that. Very helpful 🍅 video 💕🙏
Hello Sarah
It’s so wonderful to see Daniel in your new garden.
Cooking a batch of tomatoes down now from the garden. I am buying some more mid week to supplement my harvest that the chipmunks and ground hogs have feasted on. Also picking up peaches and plums for fruit leather for the grandkids. I love this time of year.
Oh Daniel, he’s such a sweet soul. Thank you for teaching us so many things Jess. I usually always learn something from your videos. 🥰✝️🌻
It was so good to see Daniel again. On sparse years I love going to Farmers Markets and getting produce to put up. It’s always good to Support Your Local Farmer. Lol. Great video as always. ❤️
I've been making your roasted salsa recipe since you shared it on UA-cam... Omg. My husband's absolute favorite treat and we look forward to it every year with our homegrown tomatoes 🙂🍅 thnx, Jess!
Daniel!!!! 💙😍😭
he has been heavy in my heart and mind lately!
Seeing him was such a "little bleesin"!
Yay!! So happy to see Daniel again. And looking so fit! I do miss his music on your videos. It's so wonderful to get together with great friends.
I’ve wondered what happened to Daniel! There was a long period of time I didn’t hear his music anymore of your videos and I was afraid something happened between y’all.
So glad to see him there and happy!
And great job Daniel! You look great! And I like your hair change!
thank you Jess, always a blessing to get a chance to watch your time on the farm.
😍😍😍 Daniel has been on my mind a lot recently!! So happy to see him hanging out!!
Jess, I absolutely love your videos! I just bought your gardening book and my daughter did too . Funny, I just introduced your channel to her because never got on UA-cam before. I sent her a message to let her know that I just watched one of your videos that had a link to your new book on it. She ordered hers the same day I ordered mine and neither one of us knew it! Haha. Just goes to show you that great minds think alike 😊.
I’m also in zone 8. Loving seeing the vibrant green in your landscape. My area of Texas is in severe drought just keep praying and trusting our Lord.
Prayers you get the correct amount of rain in the right places and at the right timing to help alleviate the drought and to help farms, ranches, animals and humans and gardens if all types. God bless.
Daniel!!! I have missed seeing him. So good to see him again. Blessings to you!
I love watching your kitties follow you
