Awesome to see a young lady who knows how to start a fire using a bow drill! Girl Power! Great video, and I learned something! Thanks for all the tips on how to do it right. ~Janet in Canada : )
Lots of respect from Ohio. You are an inspiration to a lot of people for lot of different reasons. Good luck with your future travels and busy adventure.
I have seen a lot of her stuff and I've been in a lot of places and survival situations in my life. I had some fairly good people with be but none as beautiful or as willing to be a team member and put forth the effort that I've seen her do. I would've been proud and happy to have had her as a team member. She is an awesome lady.
Great job, Melissa. Starting fire with a fire bow is hard work. Last October I took a 3 day survival course and the instructor made us do it. To my credit, I made fire 3 out of 5 times. So, if I am ever in the woods and need to do it, I can pull it off. Just make sure you always have para-cord and a knife...
Nice work! I sometimes use my thumb to push down and keep tension on the string when the string starts to slip or stretch. This makes my bowing more efficient and allows me to keep using the full length of each stroke.
I don't have to. I grew up with them. Think Ms. Miller with a twist of Joan Crawford. Also, it wasn't that long ago that Men and Women were all like this in the U.S., it's not as difficult to find solid individuals like this.
I live in the city but do have a couple huge and unfortunetly dying maple trees. Ive been experimenting with firemaking using downed limbs. Good to understand why my efforts were hard never thought hardwood is harder to work with.
@Melissa, Hmmmm I have heard this somewhere before about my wood lol. ( Time stamps 1:58 & 3:51 & 4:00 & 6:38 are very telling!!! ) Melissa you are not only pretty but smart and crafty as well. Thanks for your rendition of a great way to start a friction fire with my wood lol.
Happened to stumble across this video and I'm so happy to have done so. You were such an excellent participant on NAA. Really liked your bow-fishing. Cool video. Keep doing great things!
This is really good to see, ladies get into it, it’s not a manly mucho thing , friction fire is for anyone that cares to learn it and have a go , survival is for everyone this ladies tips are great give it ago and practice practice practise .
Thank you - made an awesome ember today - first ever - hard wood spindle and pallet wood hearth board ( probably hardwood too) - didn't know any better - no fire because tinder was no good- I can fix that.
You can use oak fireboard and spindle. You just have to be super precice on your preasure on the handhold to make sure you dont char your dust before you have enough punk to get a coal. Takes a lot of practice with oak to get good at it. Great video. Thanks for the istructional!
I like the way you started the fire using the bow drill technique and will remember this for when I get ready to do some camping out. By the way you are so gorgeous as well as intelligent in your outdoors skills.
Whittle your drill into somewhat of a square. Not a complete square but about half. It'll reduce slippage. You'll have to retie your bow, of course, but It'll make things a little easier. Good video, Melissa. We'll done!
7 років тому+1
Nice, well done, in 46 seconds every thing worked just fine!
Thank you for this! I've looked several times for this topic. I'm in New York and harder is plentiful. I don't think I've ever come across softer wood in the Northeast. You did use a softer wood for the spindle though didn't you? Can you get the same results using hardwood only?
looks like a ceramic handhold. I saw them called zip rocks or lightning rocks or something of that nature a while back. They are ceramic with a glazed divot for the spindle that eliminates almost all friction.
Hay lady you ought to try that green wood challenge that NW primate and David West channels did . I also did it to but I would not have succeeded if I hadn't watched them first. I think one of these guys has already taken his video down because he said it hardly got any views. It took me 3 hrs. We used privet hedge.

You are gorgeous 👅😘😘😘😘😘🍑
This is an instructional video no matter who is giving it...respect the host. She is very smart.
Awesome, Melissa! I didn’t know oak could work! We have lots of oak here in Norway and I can usually find dried branches. Thank you!
I'm impressed. Most survivalists avoid this type of wood like a plague for a bow drill. Well done.

Bearing block makes this all work, wondering what you are using. Good video.
...and it likely won't be long before we'll ALL need these skills.
Thank you for this! I've looked several times for this topic. I'm in New York and harder is plentiful. I don't think I've ever come across softer wood in the Northeast.
You did use a softer wood for the spindle though didn't you? Can you get the same results using hardwood only?
Awesome job honey bushcrafting is so much fun best regards be safe have fun🌲🌲🐾🐾😉
Nicely shown and explained. What did you use as bearing block?
looks like a ceramic handhold. I saw them called zip rocks or lightning rocks or something of that nature a while back. They are ceramic with a glazed divot for the spindle that eliminates almost all friction.
You are a queen with your beauty, you only need a crown.
