I agree 10000% btw. Jute is insanely good at going from zero to hero instantly! I used it to start an initial burn in a tent stove last year and was amazed how fast it combusted
Just saw your episode on discovery go and it ended with a cliff hanger. I showered to the end of the internet to see what happened. Glad I found your UA-cam. My anxiety/panic disorder journey now includes an interest in outdoor survival.
Ha! Way to rock the waiting scene. My 6 year old is constantly trying to make fire by rubbing sticks together...now that the snow is finally gone here, N. of the Soo, we should give this a go. Not sure if he would be able to put enough weight on the downward pressure. Great idea, thanks for the review.
I’ve seen that kit on Amazon probably a 1000 times and never gave it another thought because I thought it would be cheaper quality than that. Now I feel like I need one!
I didn't realize you could get a bow drill anywhere near that cheap. Just seems like a niche item that would be more expensive for that reason. Side note: I freaking love your accent.
Awesome product and LOVE your demo and step by step instructions & observations-especially how southpaws can reverse it to make it work! Totally appreciate seeing you & your warm wonderful personality on video! Crossing my fingers these demos become a regular feature again! ❤️🎉👊💐
Wow this looks awesome! In Europe we mostly use a much smaller device called a lighter tho. It's much easyer, cheaper and faster to make a fire that way.
Very unique design I've never seen before - thanks for showing. One thing I noticed: the cordage is quite loose, so you loose rotation at every change of direction, I think it would help to tighten the cord. It sure would help to take a longer 'bow' too. When I do a bow-drill, my spindle isn't as fat under the cord and not as small at the tip - it doesn't dig in the hearthboard as fast and deep and rotates quicker. You were sucessful at least, so very interesting to watch a different design that's working.
Very autentical, very honest, that you did not cut out the scene where you nearly burnt your face. Not everything on the tube has to be perfect - thats real life!
wooo that got a big flame fast..good job Melissa.I never doubted you..i seen what you can do. i never had luck using them.magnified glass worked ok if the suns out and strong..all them poor ants i toasted..your the best Melissa.Take care.
The spindle is a bit unusual but it works just fine, might be hard to duplicate in the woods.hopefully that is that last snow for quite a while, here in northern Ohio we have snow . Thanks for your new video , I'll be looking forward to the next one , take care 😃
Great video, and thank you for the after edit. Seems very few people keep the camera rolling and demonstrate their learning curve. Love watching you, pony or not. Good thing there wasn't any Aqua Net in that beautiful hair.
Got one. Good find. I wanna see how the mechanics work and then build my own to fit me better. It's a great skill to learn that is WAY easier to achieve when you've practiced at home a bunch so you don't have to scramble out in the woods. Looks like you got as much snow yestersday as we did in Ann Arbor. Gotta love Michigan weather. :) Hopefully it killed all the early mosquitoes.
Melissa it's been awhile so good to see you again! Great review of that Amazon kit I've got a flint and steel kit made by the same company works great. I didn't know the hip bag was from your company I'll have to take a serious look into it, btw good job getting Dr.Carla to model for you you're both absolutely gorgeous 🤣🤣🥰🥰 take care stay safe ATB Spam 😎❤
Looks like a nice little kit. You made some excellent points, however, I think out of convenience I'll stick with a ferro rod. Takes up less space in the pack too.👍🏻🍻
Whoa, she's a total babe. Lol, I feel like a creepy interwebs weirdo, but yeah... I'd purchase just for the bearings. Ive made my boys a few bearing blocks with fidget bearings, but I really dug the design of this. I've been subd for presumably years. I wonder why this is the first notification I've ever received for one of your uploads?
Looks like if worst comes to worst, you could use some of your hair as tinder😁 it looks like a nice kit, but if the "bow" broke you wouldn't be able to make a new one in the woods.
If I had to spend the rest of my life stranded on a deserted Island one person only, you would be my only choice. Beauty, skills, personality, you have it all. 👍💞
I'm going to have to get one of these. Thanks for the inspiration. I have some cool knives you might like on my channel if you feel like checking it out. I just subbed to yours.
Umm... U look more like a girly-girl- long hair with dye job. U may like getting cozy by a fireplace in Ur house... but I don't see U doing this in the wild. AND u were a bit winded.
I can think of many many ways YOU and I can create a kinetic fire starter!! HINT: Involves hour's of FRICTION based activities which in turn my include a massive volcanic eruption!!🔥🔥💪💥💥👍😅

That was funny, I just ordered the same one about three weeks ago just on a whim. Then I see this video.
I agree 10000% btw. Jute is insanely good at going from zero to hero instantly! I used it to start an initial burn in a tent stove last year and was amazed how fast it combusted
It blew my mind! And hair 😬
@@MelissaBackwoods You and me both! Well, maybe not the hair part. An eyebrow may have gotten singed though 😲
Thanks Melissa. Glad to see you back.

In a pinch you could probably use your hair? Except it is so beautiful, I wouldn't want you to do it. Congrats!
Thank you! Great to know you’re doing well!
Very autentical, very honest, that you did not cut out the scene where you nearly burnt your face. Not everything on the tube has to be perfect - thats real life!
Good to see you back :) they have this on Amazon in Great Britain, gonna buy one. Thanks for highlighting this product.

Yes definitely not going to be able to reproduce that ball bearing with natural materials 😃
Very happy to see your vid.. I think learning the principles of a bow drill are very important no matter how good the drill is,u can always upgrade
Nice vix. It's good to see another Michigander having fun. Take care.
How's it going? Still doing Bush craft stuff?
Also creek Stewart sells a great kit👍
Good to know! thank you ! but is it $13? haha
@@MelissaBackwoods not sure but he's always fair and u.s.a. made by small businesses 🌞👍
Big thumbs-up automatically I haven't seen you make another video please make more you're awesome
I’ve tried making a half dozen or so bow drills. Never got a fire going. Might have to try a kit like this. Great job!
Prally need to try different woods - a kit would guarantee woods that work.
That ball-bearing design is genius.
Great video, and thank you for the after edit. Seems very few people keep the camera rolling and demonstrate their learning curve. Love watching you, pony or not. Good thing there wasn't any Aqua Net in that beautiful hair.
Melissa, woman, how do you keep getting more beautiful with each passing year?! Nice to see you again. cheers!

I'm happy to see you're back on UA-cam we have all missed you and I'm happy you are making videos again!
Aw thank you 😊
Should’ve added pine needles! Also your hair is awesome! It takes gusto to grow!
I think I will try this with my Son.
Thank you 🙏🏼
I have a cart like that! 😂 The bow drill is something I need to practice with. Thanks for sharing!

Stonger then the Most people nowadays… no words…👍
Yeah, but you look great doing it .
I think I'll stick to the ferro rod and pseudotsuga menziesii fatwood
Doesn't Jute contain a oil of some sort?
THE HAIR! Do something with the friggin' HAIR!!! lol✨🤗✨

No offense I wasn’t watching the bow drill. I love your taste in decorating your house!

Put a stick inside a cordless drill. it might work better. lol
😂 AMAZING 🔥🔥🔥
Ok, you are left handed. This is right handed. What is the difference with a back and forth motion?
I was skipping the video and mistaken that she is using her hair to make fire
