Dave, you are spot-on about the car buying experience! In my nearly fifty years of buying cars from a number of different makes, I’ve only had ONE bad experience, and that was at a Lexus dealership. I got bad vibes from the sales guy and couldn’t get a straight answer out of him on anything, so I got fed up and up and started to leave. The guy followed me all the way back to my car (a Cadillac Seville) and talked at me through the window even as I was backing up. I floored it out of there, headed to the Cadillac dealership, and ordered a new Escalade in 15 minutes from a sales rep who treated me like a human being instead of as a meal ticket. I wish you sold Cadillacs!😊
Anybody puts a Foursquare sheet in front of me I'm out
😂
I hated them also, but seem to be the norm at a lot of places.
Thats amature stuff
The finance manager office- that’s where we as customers do need to be prepared.
Thanks for stopping by. lol 😂
@@jimmulderig743 sure! It helps to be prepared for a smooth transaction. I spent just 15 minutes in the finance managers office last year when I bought a new car. No complaints there. Have a great day!
I bought a certified 2023 Hyundai Tucson last month. Like always I was upfront with them. I told them I had a trade and invited them to look it over, and I told them I would pay cash for the difference. I also told them the highest trade offer I'd received up to that point. The salesman and I talked not only about the car, but just everyday stuff as well. Just a friendly no pressure conversation. They beat the highest offer on my trade by 1K and they came down on the Tucson by 3K. I had done my homework enough to know both offers were fair and told them. There's no need to try to weedle an extra hundred bucks out of them. My time is more valuable than that. I also told them at contract time I had never bought finance office products and didn't plan to start then. Finance manager said no problem, had me sign the contract and I was on my way. I got a decent deal, they made a decent profit and we all had a nice two hours together. Buying a car should be enjoyable.
Great interaction on both sides!
I like this channel. Great info
Dave, I normally agree with you on most things but the snowy weather I think you can get a better deal. I went out at 7pm on Saturday in New Jersey to look at a car and got an exorbitant amount off the deal paying cash. I was the only one in the dealership and they wanted to hit 10 for the day. They already had sales so it was easy to do and I don’t need the car. It’s an extra car so I had all the leverage. Love your videos. Thanks.
This is probably a case of your mileage will vary
Same here, half the country is raining today lol
I gotta say..
Thanks for stopping by!
Very well said about the 'car buying gurus' online, I never actually thought of it that way but when you look at it people like Ray S are basically telling people 'Hey I fleeced customers for 40 years working for dishonest dealerships so you should lie and misrepresent yourself to return the favor!' As a newbie to car sales (as a retirement career) I love making the sale but would not lie to do so; reputation is very important to me. I try to act in as much of an advisory role as anything else and like to consider myself a 'no bs' type of guy. Love your channel!
I do not get the impression that Ray S worked at dealers that fleeced customers. Have you actually watched the way he did his job, as it quite the opposite? You are unnecessarily maligning him. What he educates people about is the dealer(s) that do engage in those tactics, which is most of them.
Exactly I am way more educated now than I have ever been based on their advice, I never mention a trade in, I negotiate the price of the vehicle first and then negotiate the price of my trade-in separately, too many buyers go in saying I want my monthly payment to be X amount and the dealer can add on or adjust numbers to hit that number almost dead on or a little above but if you were a more savvy consumer you could have gotten a lower monthly payment by doing things differently, the finance office in a lot of dealerships truly are there to extract the most money from you as possible in the most sleazy way possible
You have the CLEANEST desk I've ever seen. I can't get past it. If you saw my desk you'd faint.
lol
Great review Dave
+1 for the transition!
It depends on the individual customer. Some customers do not enjoy your "sales process". They do their research, they know what they want, and they want to spend as little time as possible transacting the purchase. I am in that camp. I have spent way too much time in dealerships over the last 40 years trying to buy a car. The bottom line is that it is their money they are spending. Then there are customers that want/need the whole "sales process" to be most comfortable in their purchase. Good for them! Sales associates like yourself are exactly what they need and is why you are successful.
Exactly. I don't want to be sold, but I am sure some people do. Before I make any large purchase I have already put an exorbitant amount of time into researching it, so by the time I contact a dealership I already know exactly what I want.
When I purchased my Blazer last year I got jerked around by dealerships wanting to add non-optional dealer installed accessories or a mark up and that is something I would not budge on. I eventually found exactly what I wanted at a dealership I wanted to buy from and the process was easier than buying a TV at Best Buy. I communicated every aspect of the deal with my salesman. We mostly spoke via text with 1 phone call. I was not pushed at all. I was offered an extended warranty and got zero push back when I politely declined. I got to the dealership, went on a test drive (without the salesman), went in and signed papers, and the deal was done. I was inside the dealership for less than 10 minutes total and that could have been cut in half if I didn't actually read what I was signing.
Do your research before you go. You don't have to go in thinking you are completely in control and the salesman is just an obstacle, but also do not bow down and let them walk over you. You work hard for your money, don't let someone screw you over a couple of minutes of thinking emotional and falling in love with a vehicle.
BTW I highly recommend Day's Chevrolet in Jasper, GA. Ask for Andy Langston. Do not ever deal with Nalley Chevrolet in Union City, GA. They are the type of people who give dealerships a bad name.
In my almost 39 years in the biz, I’ve learned to go with the flow. Sales processes are in place for green peas to learn the business and let the management know what is going on. Pros still follow a process but it’s not 1-2-3. If you LISTEN, the client will let you know what they want and what info they need to make a purchase. CAIO!
Trust me, we love educated buyers. It speeds the sale up and allows us to get in front of another client. The "sales process" is just a guide that actually works both ways. As a customer you choose to contact a dealership, you choose to go to the dealer, you meet a salesperson, you explained your wants and needs, you test drive a vehicle, and you negotiate a deal. It is really two salespeople at a desk trying to find common ground.
I might be wrong, but I think that the buyer for a Tesla is a different breed. Kind of like Saab buyers years ago. I would prefer an internal combustion engine vehicle, but that is my choice.
As always informative video. Rainy day in NJ..Be safe in the ☔. The debt is unbelievable. I love the plant in the office and the fridge is super cool . People love to hear and see their names What a great idea.
Your take on the dealership experience was refreshing. I myself have subscribed and attempted to gain knowledge from some of those type of gurus you mentioned but I also have friends in the industry and understand it is a two way street. My last two vehicle purchase experiences were great. One was a very knowledgeable, fast talking salesman that I only decided to sit and hear out because I knew they were about to close and figured I would just be frank and see what he can do. Next day took delivery and was pleased with the entire process and deal. The other I did everything via phone since it was several hours away, everything was as advertised, I walked in and out in less than hour. Btw keep up the great content 👍🏽
Dave you hit it right on the head. Be honest, know your product and provide customer service. If you do all these things you will be successful.
Dealers used to always have "promo" models on display. I've met people at flea markets who sell old ones. Even going back to the 1950s
Cool video Dave.
Dave I’ve probably watched 99% of the videos you’ve uploaded. This might be the best video you’ve ever uploaded. Educational, fun, and just different. Random videos should be a monthly thing. So cool.
Thanks for watching Robby!
I just passed by! Rain and wind is crazy!
Tough to be honest when most sales people & dealers are not honest.
I have never negotiated a deal at the dealership. It has always been through email. I have to say I like the Tesla model of buying a vehicle quite a lot.
Tesla is easy because there is no negotiating
If i lived in NJ i'd definitely be visiting you to test-drive a car or 2. Loved the end of this video - hilarious!
Stay Classy Livingston 😂
There is no one like you that is a decent human being to make the car buying experience pleasant and they need to rely on tactics to lie to customers. As a buyer we have to be on guard to be rip off. If they can be honest we can be ourselves
The first dealer i worked for in 1986 was a small mom-pop store. i was working with the owner on a rainy Saturday when a guy came on the lot and the owner said" Go get him, people don't come out on days like this if they aren't serious". He was right and I sold him a car that day. I was new at car sales and learned a lot from that Owner. He was a previous GM for a Chevy dealership in Balto. Md.
Best day to buy a vehicle is the last sales day of the month and quarter. Sales reps chasing bonuses, finance guys trying to hit their numbers. That is how it was when I was in the game 20 years ago anyway.
Great video....seems to be a lot of empty cubicle space outside the office tour?
I drive a Volkswagen and I believe your numbers are correct! I see far more Tesla's everywhere compared to VW, Porsche, Land Rover, and the whole list as stated. here is my take on New Car dealers lately. I show up to a dealer with Guaranteed pre approved financing and all I need to do is find the right car at a good price including tax. and I disclose that to them. then many dealers still tell me, what payment do you want? lol
Just bought a 2023 trailblazer and it's not the sales guy but the Finance guy. 815 credit and car was 24,678 and went to sign, they tried charging 27,000
Dave thanks for talking about the EVs definitely a want and need for the good EV models like Bolt and Tesla, on the customer vs dealer aspect I think what a lot of those advice UA-camrs are trying to do is just make car buyers more aware of what goes on in a majority of dealerships like not going in and buying based on payment and negotiate the sales price of the car only because dealers can spin the number to make them look good to you but still screw you over in the same token, I agree you shouldn’t come in all hot and heated into a dealership to buy a car but I do believe Car buyers need to come in more educated about how the process works because unfortunately in all the areas I have lived in there were more bad apples than good apples when I went to buy a car
With all 4 brands, GM sells the most vehicles
Had this dealer do the 4 square deal with me multiple times. I no longer go to that dealer. My last deal the guy wanted to know how much I owed on my trade in. I don’t tell him. I wanted to know what the trade in value was. If I told him $9k, he would have game me $12k or a few grand under. when I actually was given $22k on my trade in. Hate buying cars. I feel so mean and you are right. We have slime balls in the industry. I loved the way Saturn use to do it. This is the price. Bought 4 Saturns in the past.
Dave,
I have been watching your videos for a few years. Great content. I wish my local Chevy dealer was as cool as you are. I have been shopping at Findlay Chevy here in Las Vegas for a few decades. However, If I lived in New Jersey I would give you my business.
I appreciate that!
Best buying experience is online. Know what car you want and the price. You also get to avoid the finance guy and the back end profits.
Please make some videos on the equinox Ev info. Availability prices, and 1LT 2LT differences
Best sales model is Tesla. No salesman. The price is the price, not negociable. There are customer people for cars demo and help customers during the ordering process, no pressure.
Then when you resell your car Tesla disables all the options you paid for.
I have always performed a ton of research on any vehicle I am interested in prior to going to the dealership. I lay my cards on the table and do not play games. If the sales person tries to bend the truth, add extra charges or confuse pricing I will call him on it. I sometimes have had to walk away. Over the years I have established a great relationship with two particular sales individuals who I trust based on repeat business. I don't think there is any room for shenanigans in a negotiation.
Mike is a closer!
I remember one day my sales manager was shocked because the people said we are buying this car because of your sales man. We were a high pressure place and everyone got TO to a sales manager. He didn't have to do anything. But car sales wasn't for me long term
So I have the UsDebt Clock sheet on right now. Your video is a Jan 8, today is the 18th. I can see how the different can be so off. For instance from top at GMC. Your sheet shows 11,613, mine showed (I lost my screen) a total difference figure like thousands. Whats the story there?
It's not off it just updates are vehicles are sold. GMC for example today shows 27,923 sales
Dave, as always I enjoy all your posts but this one is a stand out, so well done! No one will spend 50K plus on anything without liking the salesperson and at least somewhat trusting them. Happy New Year!
These dealerships out for one thing! Make the most money!
Yes, dealers are in a business to make money and the best way to do it is through repeat and referral business
Every single business is out to make the most money they can. That's the goal of having a business. However, you must do it honestly.
Hi Dave I want to comment on the honesty part. If all salesperson has the decent human personality as yours we all can have a great day buying cars. I must tell you I live in the southern part of NJ and I went to many dealership at the Freehold NJ area and all of the salesperson seems like they don’t want to do business and lie . Back in 2020 when there was bad shortage of cars I contacted this salesman which had the biggest sars and stars. Been trying to contact him for 2 weeks to make an appointment can’t reach him. On that week we really needed a car and just go the dealership on a Tuesday afternoon. First salesperson at the door greeted us and asked if we had an appointment. I said no and the treatment turned south. The lady never said any good things, she keeps interrupting us with her incoming phone calls. Them when the price sheet comes it took her a long time to the prices. She never explained anything on that paper. Prior to that I never heard of a price adjustment. First time heard about it. The stupid lady never explained it. When manager came to the desk he tells me go to the bank to get a preapproval first. What is this about?? Twice I been to that dealership ready to buy and can’t buy.
We literally cannot give away EVs here in San Diego so I would say ya, nobody wants EVs unless its a Tesla lol
Plenty of insulated mugs on store shelves, but the only one anybody wants right now is a Stanley Tumbler. There is currently only one EV brand matters that to buyers.
You should never tell the car dealer what payment you want to be at.
Mike is the top salesman at the dealership, wonder how many extras he sells per car at time of signing, lol.
We offer four basic products. extended service contracts, gap insurance, tire/wheel, lease end protect
Do you know when your dealership will start to receive 2025 models?
I rented a tesla model 3 long range last week. The first time I drove a tesla. It handled like a dream, lots of power. Couldn't imagine what the model s 1000 hp feels like. I might consider getting one. Dave I think you should go online and order a tesla and take us thru the process and pick up. I think it's time you get a tesla.
Here's a video I did when my buddy bought his Tesla last summer ua-cam.com/video/nfc3Bm18s2U/v-deo.htmlsi=nex3I-HIWLeTg9_n
Dave ….. I buy new every 12-18 months. My family thinks Im crazy, but I actually enjoy the process. Usually takes me 3-5 weeks once I start shopping around. I never buy unless I have at least $10,000 to 12,000 in positive equity once the deal is done!
Do you get people like me very often?
Not too often. Most people, unless a major life change, usually stay in a car for 3 to 5 years
@@DaveBsellsChevy Love your page. Keep it up!
Im sure you enjoy being upside down too.
“Sales Trainers” are the worst!!
Hey Dave, how do you go about applying to become a car salesman? I feel like a lot of times in interviews I perform well and do all the right things. I reviewed my resume and refurbished it through online resources. I was wondering if my age is holding me back as someone who is 21. I watch your videos, and many others and learned so much about this industry and I really want to enter it. Any tips?
Just walk into your dealerships of choice with a resume in hand. Ask receptionist if they are hiring and they will usually have you fill out an application and possibly have a sales manager talk with you. Be yourself, smile, dress nicely, be excited and show them you are willing to work and to learn. Age shouldn't matter at all. I started at 24. Once you get hired learn the product!!!!
The first question I would ask is why do you want to get in the business? Loving cars is not the answer. Before you go to apply, find out how the current sales force is dressed. We wear dress shirts and ties. When an applicant comes in looking like he just came from the beach, or dirty and unkempt, no way Jose. Granted, I’ve been in the business almost 39 years and I’m kind of set in my thinking. A salesman has to look like he can afford what he is selling. Big stores have a regimented process so you will learn the steps to sell a car. It’s a very tough business and you definitely need very thick skin. Good luck. CIAO!!
The finance office can sour the whole sales experience if the guy is high pressures or doesn't take the first no on all the extras, you (Dave) could have a great interaction with the customer than it goes south from there, but that's just me i'm sure there's folks who are 'sellable' or find a value in that stuff, it's just not for me and i've had experiences in the past with high pressure finance office and i don't return to that store for future purchases.(And i'm not saying Mike is that) just my opinions on how i look at it. Great video overall.
Mike is a good guy. He doesn't pressure people but he does want the opportunity to at least be able to explain what we offer.
@@DaveBsellsChevy
That's good to know for future reference,
it appears from your vids that you have a good staff there and by your previous statements you mention you get a lot of repeat customers so that says a lot.
I think your dealership is awesome. If I visited, I would feel more like it's a family reunion than traditional car buying experience. Help each other out. Be educated but be friendly too. My local dealer salesman last year saw my DB sticker on the back window last year and it was smooth sailing on a new purchase, no joke.
Nice!
If new car dealers were totally ethical...why don't they post the actual 'out the door price' on the new car like grocery stores, department stores, gasoline pumps, restaurants, and retail stores post the actual price of a retail item?
Did your first Chevrolet Blazer EV ever sell? Haven’t seen it on the lot in recent videos.
GM put them on stop sale.. we have it parked in the back
Oh that’s interesting. By the way, what happened to that used white Suburban from previous episodes? Did it sell?
@@matthewhinsley6930 my Suburban client popped in a few days later to look at it. She stuck to her 35k.. we came down to 36.5k. She passed and we sold it to someone else the next day
Biggest sales news in 2023 is that Hyundai/Kia surpassed the Stellantis brands in sales.
I'm interested in becoming a car salesman... been watching these videos for a few days trying to gain some intel
It’s a great profession! It’s very important to find the right dealership. Check out customer reviews and employee reviews on whichever dealership you’re interested in.
Very good advice... I am at a great dealer and that's exactly why I've been there so long.
Just go plug that url in the way back machine and go back to 12/31/23 to see the data
Nice, thanks for the tip 🙏
@@DaveBsellsChevyalso I just noticed that the debt clock webpage has a Time Machine button at the top left, but you can only go back to certain years
I feel like product knowledge is an absolute must. I’m not sure how specific sales men wanna be, but I think there should be some sort of standard. The other day, I walked into a Toyota dealership; and I’m looking at a Grand Highlander. I asked a salesman how much space is behind the third row, and I’m expecting a number not something like “oh it’s massive”
Which I think is fair. The salesman did not know the figure and came back later with it. I later asked him what engines are in the GH, and I was told a turbo. However the important think to note is that there are 2 other engine options that he never specified, which I kinda sorta disliked.
My point to all this is Dave, is that do you believe that salesman should know deep down on the top of their head the specifics of the vehicle, whether it’s cargo space in cubic feet, or the exact horsepower in a car, or is that too specific?
Toyota dealership I worked for had training sessions for product knowledge whenever a new model came out or a new year started.
@@mikenonya6382 I see. How specific were they in training if you don’t mind me asking? Was it like down to a tee, like cargo numbers behind each row or like how much horsepower and torque each engine produces, or was it just general basic stuff?
It's very hard to know everything especially when people never ask. I can't even remember the last time someone asked me the horsepower on a vehicle or actually dimensions. The important thing is if you don't know the answer, know where to find it.
Have you ever dealt with a 3rd party car buyer? I forget what theyre called
Yes, I've dealt with a few brokers. Not a fan. I did all the work and they made more money charging both the client and the dealer for the deal.
@@DaveBsellsChevy they charge the dealer? I thought customer paid
Talking about lying? Dealerships hold points on interest rates and won’t tell you as long as your at the monthly payment you told them you wanna be at… that’s why the consumer needs to own the conversation and not give information, dealerships are just as sneaky and greasy
I'm betting that those Ford numbers are inflated due to cities buy new trucks.
could be.. I'm not sure how fleet business is accounted for
@@DaveBsellsChevy Oh don't be fooled. They use those numbers to stay #1 in their eyes.
Dave, I think you should have an online course for potential salesmen , teaching them how to get into the business, as well as the do's/don'ts of being a successful car salesman. Your knowledge & technique is off the charts.
Talking about stereotype... your finance manager literally oozes Car Salesman.
In what way?
@@DaveBsellsChevy lol, i'd rather not say. I don't know him personally, so I will leave it at that. Good video as always Dave
So you judge books by the cover
@@DaveBsellsChevy I actualy thought I was doing the opposite by saying "i'd rather not say. I don't know him personally, so I will leave it at that. " But since you asked further, he reminds me of that one The Office episode titled "Mafia" when Michael meets with an insurance salesman named Angelo Grotti in the office and is later convinced by Dwight and Andy that he is part of the Mafia.
Sorry man but the reason the public acts a certain way towards dealers is because the have been getting so screwed for so long . I like to watch you , you seem like a good person but if we don't stand up for ourselves it will be markup city.
GMC and Chevy numbers should be combined imo, too similar.
The Tesla sales are proof people will pay more for a better car buying experience. I hate to be that guy Dave B, but you are the exception not the rule. When you buy a home do you have your realtor tell the other realtor exactly what you will pay? No, and car sales is no different. I can be friendly, kind, cooperate with your process, and still not show all my cards. Then again, I typically purchase using the Costco program. Easy peasy, on the road burning gas within 30 minutes.
Dave people or a person could trust you. Other sales guys aren’t as honest
Do the opposite it’s the George Constanza thing to do🙂
Exactly!!!! Great episode
Dave , Tesla EV's are selling ok but not everybody else. Ford is stuck on EV's.. and all the other automakers nationwide. Tesla has the best charing system and better range than most other automakers. So the less than 10% of the American car buyers who want a EV will shop Tesla first.
Tesla does not have better range then other EVs! Actually they over promise on mileage and they had to lower their promises about 20%. But their advantage is their charging stations but starting this year there will be more manufacturers using their advantage charge stations.
@@gmv0553 much needed .
Well nobody smart wants electric cars. From the unreasonable prices and lack of charging networks. 30 years from now maybe when the technology has improved.
The reality is most EV buyers rarely need to rely on public charging infrastructure in their daily lifestyle.
It's like hand-held battery power tools when they first came out no one wanted them. They were overpriced and less reliable. After many many years, they improved better charging, better battery's and better tools. Now that's all anyone uses corded tools are a thing of the past. EV cars can be the same in 20 to 30 years realistically. They need to just stop ramming them down peoples necks. Let it develop and improve. I just don't get being a pioneer with the technology. Make car companies figure it out or let it die. And home charging networks in my area are causing issues with rolling blackouts during winter storms due to the impact on the grid. We are not as a country prepared for EVs
I dont associate EV and Tesla as the same thing.
Why is that?
C'mon Dave 25% of Tesla sales are fleet
@DaveBsellsChevy roughly 100k are are sold to rental, govt and other fleet companies. So 20-25%. Its public info
