Well, just to let you know…….. I have cooked this about 6 times since I found your recipe, and I have fed it to all my friends who come over. Everyone has a trip down memory lane and wants the recipe, or they just want me to keep making it so they can come over and eat it up. Either way, I absolutely love your recipe and you for sharing it back to the modern world. It seems that everything I like, either gets changed beyond recognition or they stop making it altogether. I’m always so sad about the loss of another of my very favourite Australian things and that is ALLEN’S MARELLA JUBES. So hard, chewy and mouth watering. But ALLENS don’t make them any more either. There are some soft-Jube type lollie recipes on the net, but nothing like the original hard, chewy and long-lasting Allen’s Marella Jube recipe. DOES ANYONE ELSE REMEMBER THEM and MISS THEM TOO? They stopped making them because they said demand went down, but I used to buy in BULK, the huge 1.2 kg bags, and several bags at a time! BIBINA the Chef’s shop used to sell them in the bulk Lolly aisle, down at Warner’s Bay / Lake Macquarie NSW. And the company would not even make 1.2 kg bags in the first place if the demand wasn’t there and people were not buying them. I don’t believe people weren’t buying them. They were an Aussie Icon lollie, like Cobbers, Red Frogs, Jaffas, Minties (even they have changed, too soft these days) etc….. Kool mints, Musky mints, etc…. Make AUSTRALIA Great again, bring back our original Aussie recipes and all the lollies. I also used to buy them for all the dancers who came to learn Salsa and Rueda dancing at Bar Beach Surf Club in Newcastle at “Salsa By the Sea”. Everyone loved them. I loved the purple ones the best and then they stopped making purple ones, then I loved the red ones next best, then they stopped making the product completely. Bring back ALLEN’S MARELLA JUBES! That’s what I say. They were as great and Aussie as Braised Steak and Onion Toasties with tomato sauce.
naww thats awesome Suzanne im glad you liked it and thank you so much for the feed back comment i really appreciate it. i do have a really old recipe for jubes that i have not yet made. i will def do that down the track will be interesting to see what there like. i too was brought up on braised steak and onion toasties we even had them for dinner. have a lovely day mate 😁
I used to love Masterfoods Corn and Bacon spread when I was a kid, they stopped making it. For years I looked for it. I sent them an email earlier this year asking to bring it back. They told me that when they closed the factory in N.Z. They broke up the machines and sold them for scrape. They make enough money to build them again, I read an article saying that so many people want it back, but they won't do it. Same as Poly Waffles, but they are bringing them back. Or Dim Sims, those machines where sold off and broken down. There are so many things that we made in this country, but not anymore. We have gone from the clever country to she'll be right mate country. Bring back Bacon Bars too. Lol lots of fond memories.
I'm a young girl who's just living out of home for the first time and I don't know how to cook so often find I'm just eating frozen meals all the time but AHH I'm so happy I found your channel !! although I've only followed along with a couple of your videos so far! Your instructions are super easy to follow and I feel like you're here cooking with me :) keep up the great work !

I've found your channel and subbed cause you sound and talk just like one of my big sisters, she's a total dag who grew up in the 60's & 70's, boy I miss her tucker, now I got you to make me smile!
But the modern day tinned braised steak, tastes nothing like the old KRAFT one in the red tin. The KRAFT one was so so tasty. Delicious actually. The new ones are YUCK. I’m so glad I found your recipe to make the genuine thing. My family never went camping, we just used to make toasted sandwiches at home, but we did the braised steak ones very often and always with tomato sauce. I’m getting the meat out of the freezer to make this straight away. Yay!
This seems like a great recipe. I do a lot of cooking for my married daughter and her family. She likes recipes that will freeze. She rarely tells me what to cook so I have to spend countless hours on UA-cam looking for recipes. Main meals, desserts, biscuits and slices. This recipe will be perfect.
This has always been my favourite. Ever since I was a little girl, i'm now 50. I then made it for my family. My 23 year old son still requests it when he comes over. Simple & delicious! ❤
I’ve been looking for a recipe for this for so long. It’s my brother’s favourite. I LOVE your channel. Wasted a whole day browsing through the recipes. So many good memories. And you definitely can cook!! 💗
I’m a Chinese girl who’s married to and Aussie bloke. My husband eats basically anything but my father in law is very traditional and gets grumpy when he doesn’t get his proper meat lol. I am so going to try this. Thanks for sharing
God so many of your recipes my mum showed us how to cook as teenagers so I'm going through your video list thinking 'oh we ate that, I cook that!' It's really comforting. I don't usually subscribe to channels, but I have to yours because you make me feel at home. Hi from Perth! :)
I make this sometimes to feed myself. I fry it all up and put it in the slow cooker for about 10 hours on the weekend. I bought a chamber vacuum sealer after wanting one for years last year. Once its cooled down i pop it in a bag and then freeze it. No more freezer burnt food in plastic containers. Makes for an easy dinner after working long hours during the week. Just put the bag in the microwave and reheat it.
I made this the other day. I cooked it in the slow cooker and it turned out awesome. I served it with mashed potatoes and had the leftovers on toast for breakfast the next day 😋
This the second easy oldschool reciepe that I have tried from your channel. Wow oh wow. Brings back memories. You are an Aussie Legend. 10/10. On to the third. Are you my long lost Aussie Aunty? 🤣🤣
Oh AG, you just took me back so many years. My mum used to do braised steak and onions. She might not have caught the cooking gene from my gran, but she knew how to do braised steak. You could do the same using a slow cooker couldn't ya. I swear I could smell that while you were cooking. I remember the tins of braised steak, there was Tom Piper and Kraft, there was another one but I can't remember who made it. The Kraft was always the best. We used to make jaffles with it. Thank you for the memory and the lesson. Your the best.
Naww your so welcome Kel glad you have fond memories of this dish. love jaffles i call them toastie toasties cos were a little special here in s.a lol. 😊💜🍻
We went camping with some friends the other week, and I had made this the night before at home, served it to everyone, and they all commented how delicious it was, not even a drop of sauce was left. Mind you I am a Chinese girl who’s very new to Australian way of cooking (if I could put it that way), and to get compliments from my Aussie friends (more importantly from my husbands friends) just means so much to me. I said I learnt this recipe from a UA-cam channel called Aussie Girl Can Cook, and they all laughed. “Apparently this is Chinese girl here that’s cooking.” 😂😂😂
😂🤣 that is so awesome thank you for giving it a go. it think it is awesome you are cooking Aussie food good on you Helen and well done mate. have a lovely weekend xo 😊💜🥂
I made your Braised Steak & Onion After Watching Your Video & The Family Is Like “WHAT ARE YOU COOKING” I’ve Never Made It Before But Following Your Recipe It Turned Out Amazing 😀 Of Course It’s All Been Eaten Now As The Fam Went Crazy! A Huge Thank You I’ll Be Watching Your Vids From Now On 👍🏻😁 Absolutely Delicious 😋 Have A Fantastic Evening & God Bless 🙏🏻

Years ago, maybe 20+ years ago, Mum would buy two tins of Braised Steak and Onions and make a homemade Pie, or we would just have it on toast. It was the best thing ever. Unfortunately we all have Coliacs now so I am looking for a gluten free way to make Braised steak and onions. But I don't want to chew too much, I like the easy chew as my teeth are old and not happy getting bits stuck in them haha. I will use a stick blender if I need after the cooking period if I need to. EDIT: P.s Fellow Aussie. We use to buy them from Franklins (Supermarket sold off to Safeway's / Woolworths I believe)
Gday fellow Aussie I remember Franklins there was one at hollywood plaza a long time ago there home brand frootloops scarred me for life lol. you wont need a stick blender it falls apart easy to eat with old teeth xo have a great weekend mate 😊💜🍻
Darl, you had me when you started with Kraft braised steak and onion done in bread in over a camp fire. Tomato sauce and black pepper on top! That was by far my favourite camp-food when I was a kid, closely followed by toasties filled with tinned spaghetti. I find tinned spaghetti disgusting these days, but braised steak and onion will always be special.
i love how we all have the same fond memories of braised steak and the good old camp fire. toasties were a staple when we were kids. have yourself a great weekend Andrew xo 😊💜🍻

When cooking beef, why use chicken stock, when you could use beef stock?
because beef stock is really salty and its flavor really takes away from the flavor of the braised steak and onion. have a lovely day Karl 😁
