- Well we got pelted with requests for this one. And man oh man am I happy about it. Although I had seen it once, I had pretty much forgotten this raw gem. I wont forget it again. Major of course has not seen this... Anyway Paddy Considine and Toby Kebbell Star in this breathtakingly powerful Shane Meadows film. Thanks for suggesting.

From what I've noticed it blows Americans minds a bit they are not used to social realism in their film industry.
Can anyone help me find a film, it was like a documentary film about an amateur film maker filmed in America, was like an 80s film but unsure now, I just remember it being grainy back water town some trees maybe Florida.... any ideas ???
@@Pure-Luck447 Are you maybe thinking of American Movie? Released in 1999. I've never seen it, but it's a documentary about an amateur filmmaker called Mark Borchardt trying to get a short-film made. It's meant to be very good so I keep seeing it recommended in lists.

One of my favourite films. Richard is essentially taking out his own guilt for being embarrassed and ashamed of his own feelings towards his brother on the people who tortured his brother. They're all guilty of failing Anthony in one way or another

Chayne stoking is the breathing rhythm of a person who is dying.
Toby Kebbels performance as a person with learning disabilities is so good. I worked in care for people with learning disabilities and I can spot an actor pretending based on stereotypes a mile off and his performance is so real it's scary

One of the most powerful scenes in British film making is where they pull up in that comical Citroen 2CV, Paddys delivery of hatred blows me away every time i see it.
All of Shane Meadows films are powerful, and all essential viewing.
Hands down the best British film of all time. Great review guys.

@saphireplayz5171 Withnail & I, Trainspotting, Ghandi are all very good tbf. Chariots of Fire, Hamlet, The Last Emperor are full of fine acting and writing but wouldn't raise the pulse of a Guinea Pig. Very little rewatch value in any of them. Slumdog Millionaire is maudlin pish. If you think that's a great film I don't know what to say to you. Each to their own I suppose...

When you see him as the utterly helpless Guardian journalist in Bourne Ultimately being dragged are Waterloo station by Matt Damon.
80+% of this film was improvised. That shows in the dialogue, and makes the film rise head and shoulders above 99% of films
It's one of those movies that stay with you, proving lots of money and fancy visuals aren't needed to get the point across. For us Brits we know people like this. They are around us all the time. I was a little annoyed that bad guy got it so easy in the end but really it's the man who was aware of everything that really is the worst. It's a real thoughtful movie with humour flung in too. Great review guys. Try 'nil by mouth' .
I love how this film picks it's setting as a small countryside town. Low level crooks who don't have that big city hardness about them. This would explain their reactions to some situations, someone getting shot or killed is not the sort of shit they are used to dealing with. In their area they are people you wouldn't fuck with but they are way out of the league of what they've brought down on themselves. If I remember Paddy's character is a "Para" as in Paratroop soldier. The Paras have a reputation for being a bit wild compared to other soldiers and they really picked with the wrong person's brother to piss off.

Love this film. "It's beyond words" as Paddy puts it.
That scene where they square off on the kerbside is so tense, it's amazing.
This film came from a few ideas, one is ‘what if First Blood was set in Northern England’ and the director Shane Meadows and Paddy Considine reminisced about how back in their home towns there were people who had done unspeakable things but never paid for it and were still walking about the same towns with families now. It’s very dark but great performances, some good dialogue and scenes. A good introduction to Shane Meadows, his best film is aguably This Is England, a funny but emotionally powerful coming of age film against the backdrop of Thatcher’s 80s England. Must watch.
It's not Northern England though, it's The Midlands.

Geographically a lot of the county is in the North though ! and I’d say parts of it (Buxton, Glossop) are very close to Manchester and everyone there would probably consider themselves Northerners. SO, it can be both set in Derbyshire and be in Northern England ! 😀

Being from Derbyshire I like that he doesn’t look far from home when it comes to film settings/locations
I love this film and as I saw it Richard killed those guys because they were 100% culpable for his brothers death. Richard "sparing" the last guy wasn't actually mercy. He knew that he wasn't like those others so he couldn't justifiably kill him like those however he still needed to be punished. Richard had basically resigned himself to his own death so forced him to do it, essentially making that guy a murderer. Something he, as a family man and someone who was misguided previously but still tried to become someone else beyond those thugs, would have to carry with him for the rest of his life. Richard gave him torment.
Richard feels responsible for Anthony's death that's why he got him to kill him.
Great explanation. I never thought of the ending like that but that makes complete sense. I think it's also a case of him saying 'please just finish the job" because Richard couldn't had nothing to live for at this point. Dying was the only thing that gave him peace. But it's true that he could have just done it himself so making the other guy do had the added benefit of causing him with the same sense of guilt, torment and self disgust.
@@amanred9337 At the end, Richard is essentially accepting the guilt. His sin is exactly the same as Mark's; He did nothing. He left when he should have protected someone weaker.
If Mark deserves death, then logically so does Richard. The film makes it pretty clear that Richard wasn't a "good" brother to Anthony. What Sonny says to Anthony is essentially true ("Your Brother left to get away from you.") as is Richard's admission at the end about how he felt about Anthony in life (a burden and an embarrassment). There are subtle clues peppered through the movie on a second watch, a lot said by what ISN'T said.
It's a story about ordinary, everyday monsters. The ways we hurt each other with callous disregard and casual cruelty. And Richard is most definitely one of those monsters.

A guy picks up a hitchhiker, hitchhiker says "thanks glad you picked me up, aren't you worried I could be some kind of serial killer? Driver replies "nah chances of 2 serial killers ending up in the same car on the same road is very unlikely!"

The first time watching this I never clocked that Anthony was a figment of his imagination and had already died. Paddy's character is truly frightening.
That's the point of the film.
It was the second time that I watched it when I realised. Absolutely astonishing film.
I seen it as his ghost that was haunting Richard
Paddy Considine hating his brother before he died is the much bigger and more shocking twist.
That absolutely punches you, when you see how he talks about him, after the comfort of all their endearing imagined scenes together. Also makes it way sadder; Toby Kebbell's own brother treated him almost as badly as some of the bad guys did and he never got to experience Paddy's redemption. He died with his brother being completely cold to him.

One of the best British movies ever. Its such a well told story and Paddy Considine is superb in it and the twist was done so well.
This film is outstanding. I can watch it over and over. All the actors play amazing parts especially Paddy Considine and Toby Kebbell. I've always been a fan of Paddy but this deserves more recognition and Toby in what was his first movie to play this part was superb. A powerful and heartbreaking movie!...Thanks to Paddy & Shane bringing it to us! 😊
Paddy Constantine in this was unreal. Really dark, i remember when i first watched it. I sat looking at the wall for an hour trying to process it really sad but brilliantly portrayed

The first film called a room for Romeo is really good too
I just watched this again yesterday. In the final scene where Richard is imploring the guy to stab him and you get those quick shots of his interactions with the man's children, it's a horrific insight into how far gone Richard is. He begs for death because he knows the rage has consumed him, and if he remains alive there is no limit to what he might do to those connected to his brother's death. He is the devil asking the world to save itself from him.
Exactly. Most people seem to miss that. BY doing what he's done Richard has become a monster. Now he's afraid of himself and what he's capable of. The film alludes to him harming the children next. He knows he needs to be stopped, but he also makes the last fella suffer by forcing him to become a murderer.

*I had the same reaction when I first watched it. Its unique because its so damned bleak for a revenge film you usually root for the "hero" but there were no heroes in this film, Paddy nailed it as a man obviously suffering from trauma besides what happened to his brother, he was so brutal in his quest for revenge & realized he couldn't live with himself after what he'd become.*
He’s the baddest good guy, or the goodest bad guy. It’s perfect.

When the British landed on the beaches of Gallipoli during the First World War to help the Australians and New Zealand out .They put the kettle on and made cup's of tea for themselves on the beach which at the time pissed off a lot of Australians and New Zealanders .
We take tea-breaks whenever. We do it to alleviate tension, which is what they're feeling. Don't criticise us for it.

28 days later is pretty much what made Cillian Murphy blow up… amazing Danny Boyle movie and the zombies are terrifying! You lads should definitely watch and review that.
The last guy, Mark wasn't as bad as the others. He got away from that horrible scene after Anthony's suicide and turned his life around.
I grew up in the Midlands in the UK, in a small village. There were a few families who behaved like the bad guys in this movie. Luckily I was too young to mingle with them, and I left the village when I was 17. The feeling of fear was always around these people, though. Me and my mates always had the good sense to avoid certain streets and keep our eyes peeled for trouble.
Lucky escape. Paddy said that him and Shane based the story on real people. Horrible to think that actually happens.

Great movie with interesting music, my wife is from the area in Derbyshire where it's filmed, know it well. Low budget movies at its best.
Such a great film. I know of something similar that happened where I live, former friends of mine used to allow a mentally handicapped guy hang out with us so they could bully him. They didn't kill him, but he died of a brain tumor and they used his funeral to rewrite history, lying to his family about his relationship to 'us'. I just stopped hanging out with them. I didn't like the guy and only interracted with him if he spoke to me. I only wish I'd stopped sooner. This film has always stuck a chord with me, especially since Meadows said that this is a familiar story in towns all over the UK and maybe even the world.
Some people are just not good people and I was afraid of being seen as having no friends. I should have had more courage.

There’s a scene in that series’s that made me skip for the first and only time. The acting is SO good. I remember the 80s just about and the 90s well. The whole production is crazy good 🫡
It is a total classic revenge film. He let's the least culpable character, who has moved away from the gangster lifestyle, and is now respectable with a family and kids deliver the final blow. He knows that it will ruin that blokes life forever so it is poetic revenge. Just brilliant from Shane & Paddy. For those not familiar, visit the rest of Shane Meadows catalogue. In particular This Is England. One of the greatest movies ever made
One thing though, I guess it's a little poetic license but Richard really had no way of knowing the specifics of what happened to Anthony, all the flashbacks were just for the viewers to know what happened, but the only thing Richard really knew were the rumors and gossip he was told by the people in town, I guess he learned enough to piece it together. I'm nitpicking a little, the movie is a classic, one of my favorites.
@@davidsheriff9274 them sort of fucked up things always come out though, they always end up speaking about them to people over the years and if youre Richard it'd only take one person you trust as reliable to say "this is the story I heard" off someone they trust as reliable. It wouldn't be hard to find out then corroborate the build up, them keeping Anthony round for their own amusement and giving him drugs, so then accepting that the story of what happened to him in the end went down as it did isn't going to be a stretch. Their parents or whoever was responsible for looking after Anthony would've seen a massive change in him for one. I'm sure the fella at the end when he's talking to his wife also says that Richard was their mate before he went away to the army so he knows what type of people they are too.
There's more than this but three examples I can think of off the top of my head in my area of horrible shit happening is people locking people up and tying em up an torturing them. One of em was very much like this film actually except the fella was older and they were cuckooing his gaff but they tied him up and blew weed smoke in his face and beat him. This one I asked the lad to his face if that was true and he laughed and said it was and I told him he was a scumbag and left, so that's someone who's done something fucked up willing to and stupid enough to admit to it to essentially an acquaintance he'd knocked round with a few times. Another one a different much more serious group of people tied a fella up in his own gaff again and pulled his toenails out, and the last one which wasn't long ago and was some of the same people as the second, a man was tied up, imprisoned for days, forced to smoke crack and then had sexual stuff done to him among other torturing. That was common knowledge within days of it happening and the details everybody had were exactly what happened and it certainly wasn't the victim who put it about which means within days someone who was at least with the people doing it went and opened his mouth and said exactly what happened.
The characters in this are divs who drink and do drugs, it would've come up. Then you've got the bird and the fella who regrets it. Yeah hes never told his wife before then but how many years have to have passed if in the flashbacks he's supposed to a young fella without the family and then he's married with lads of that age. It's reasonable to imagine him over the years having too much to drink and confiding in people, it's not unreasonable as well to imagine that closer to when it happened he had a very rough time with his part in it and would bring it up a lot and publically. I know we can't obviously know any of that but as you've highlighted we're left to draw our own conclusions on how Richard knew what happened so maybe some of what I've said makes it seem more plausible to you cos I hate when I love a film or TV programme but one element of it doesn't sit right with me.

Theres a lot of humour in it too. The bad guys are so comical in their clown car.
shane meadows the director of this film is a legend love all his films this is england and the spin off tv series and a rare gem that more or less launched paddy considine acting career a room for romeo brass .
This is England is another outstanding film by Shane Meadows. There's also a sequel TV series equally as good.
Also, a little known 3 episode "mini series called the Virtues is extremely powerful with an outstanding performance bv Stephen Graham ( Tommy from Snatch )

I drove down all the way from the Lake District to Matlock where it was filmed just to find all the locations,, I walked in that pub and it was just full of hells angels ,, so I bounced the fxxk out of there ,, then I went and found the barn where they were chilling ,, and the bus stop ,, great day out that homies

Can't remember if I commented on this.But the main bad guy is Gary Stretch who fought Chris Eubank for the WBO middleweight title.He also saved an American housewife from an attack when he was coming out of one of your stores.

I've seen this film many times, just to point out a few finer points to the 2 sweet Americans who reviewed it and anyone incase ye missed it - this film was made on a shoe string budget by Shane meadows, the genius behind this is England, - England isn't all Downton Abbey and mansions - but that is the upper class, and films like dead man's shoes show what its like for the rest of us, especially in the North of England, set in a little town, probably round Manchester or Leeds because its non specific, and the message is one of the bleakness we live in, in these poor declined areas, along to do with tory governments and what happened in the 80s, Richard is in the forces, seems to allude to special forces, and his brother with learning difficulties was basically bullied and tortured by this gang - and that within itself is a commentary of your local estate small time drug dealer, a tale of poverty, and revenge, when he comes to kill the last man, he says - your a good mother, instantly realising he can't kill a father, so he must die instead as he's been on a serial killing spree anyway, its nuanced, he puts his head on the wall realising immediately he can't kill the last one left, there's also a cut back scene where Richard has been to Anthony's school and has set up a fun day of racing and such, who was that kid who kept showing his arse? Richard was a kind well virtued man, and the pain of what they did to his brother, and as he seems special forces, took them out with ease, its a downer tale and a master piece, Paddy Con is a great actor, he was brilliant in house of the dragon, dead man's shoes is a club classic, its almost like a super hero noir piece, on a separate note where he doses them with acid, the director Shane meadows kept them up for 2 days of no sleep to replicate the delirium, beauty in the bleakness
"Richard was a kind well virtued man"
Going to take issue with this, because the film paints a VERY different picture. He was not a good Brother, and the ending is Richard accepting that fact. He has "become" a monster, but he wasn't innocent beforehand. He's just as culpable as Mark, since he did exactly the same thing. He did nothing, He left. When he weighed up protecting Anthony with his own needs and desires, he chose himself every time.
@@rabid_si well that's down to your interpretation isnt it, because its a revenge film, - the notion of people loving their siblings, even though its HIGHLIGHTED in the film - 'he was a fucking norna', and he was an 'embarrassment', there's nothing to state he's left Anthony but for the fact we was in the armed forces, the was no purpose, and the battle within him of rage love and revenge when he finds out his vulnerable brother has been tortured, abused and killed in the most heinous way, he set out of the path of revenge, he was kind - as a Anthony said, he played football with kids in a special school, - they all wanted to hold your hand, - I didn't though Richard because I had you anyway, such a painful scene - that's not a virtue? Of love for children, character and world building? Why wasn't he innocent before hand? What has he done, he feels he might of abandoned his brother and says deep down he was ashamed, and ashamed of himself, so set out to slaughter those who did that to his kid bro, whether for right or wrong, he acted on his morals and principals - because for him, Richard, they deserved what they had coming, - where does it state or allude he chose himself everytime? He had his own life, in fact the flashback of playing with kids with additional needs contradicts that, - and also he clearly wanted away from that council estate bleak life, like lots of people who escape from their home lifes for something different, or better etc, watch the film again another 10 times and get back on me rab'si nesbit, peace ✌
All I will say is, it's a good thing I'm a more forgiving person than Richard. I was bullied brutally at Hambleton Primary School. One day I had to be kept indoors as there were 30 kids staging a sit-down protest to let me out so they could beat me up.That fucking hurts to this day.

It packs a punch
I learned a new slang from Northern England from this movie. I learned that nanner is short for banana and it means someone who is mentally ill or mentally handicapped. And I always thought it was interesting that in England, men call each other the C word, and here in the states it's only used against women, and it's the atom bomb of insults, there's no going back after you call a woman that in the US.

So glad you liked this film. It is one of my favourites but I know it slips under most people's radars. I have a special affection for it because it wa shot about 8 miles down the road from me in and around a Derbyshire town called Matlock. The final scenes were set at Riber Castle which isn't a real castle, it's a romanticised victorian mock castle that overlooks Matlock.
Up until the early 90s there was a small zoo in the grounds that I went to many times as a kid in the 1970's and the old animal enclosures are where the dirty deed to Richard was played out. Rather than being documentary like I see it more as a fly on the wall experience because the dialogue delivery (and dialect) is quite authentic for the area, especially for typical working class lads. I can tell they are not local actors but I do sound a bit like them when im chatting with my mates so not a bad effort considering the location isn't really relevant to the film. I have to say, the script isnt typical of the location, Matlock is a really nice place.

i watched this the first time when i was like 12 or 13. might not have been a fitting movie to watch at that ahe i knew that. its too heavy. but you understand it. its hard every time but still there is something in me thats wanna rewatch it every time. thanks

When Richard spray paints, the words Cheyne-Stoking is a reference to Cheyne-Stokes breathing is an abnormal pattern of breathing commonly seen as patients approach death. It is named for the physician's John Cheyne and William Stokes, who first described the pattern in the early 1800s.
Patients who experience Cheyne-Stokes breathing will take several breaths followed by a long pause before regular breathing resumes. These cycles of breathing will become increasingly deeper and can be difficult for family members as they wait for the final breath to come. So in a way, it's a sinister physiological message to them that they are now on borrowed time, though I would hazard a guess that they do not know what it means. Really subtle and clever too, and the first really clear indication of Richard's intent too.

Nobody knows what the protagonist did in the military. He may have come to realise that he has become a true monster, not back home, but abroad.
Whatever his history, it's one hell of a movie.
I read about the making of the film. the main actor and the director was having tea exploring a film idea and making charactors. and the order of death was based on how strong the charactors were
