Yes! Give the soil the smell test! If there's rot you will smell it. Having said that, I bought a large Raven zz plant on clearance that was sitting in a full decorative pot of water with no holes that stunk to high heaven. Brought it home, dumped it out, cut the roots down to about nothing but the bulbs, let them lay on towels for 2 days then dipped them In a solution of hydrogen peroxide & water for 30 secs or so and potted them up in Terra Cotta pots with orchid bark. Got 5 new healthy plants and a decorative pot for $3. Well worth the gamble!

That's how I do too! If I know they're very resilient, majority of the time their price is the decorative pot, so I see it as a free plant since I always need pots anyway lol

I would add, about buying baby plants cheap, that with these you also have way better chances to develop it into a dense and healthy plant in your home. Versus big plants that you buy, which often are a result of the splitting of a way wider plant, so you have just a quarter or even an eighth of the plant you would've grown yourself. Also, a bigger plant will be accustomed to greenhouses conditions where it will have spent the first few years of its life, so more chances it struggles to adapt to your home environment. Versus an innocent baby still young and able to adapt to your home conditions.

I work for a supermarket that will not be named for their sake. They have a flower and plant section and they throw TONS of plants away because of tiny blemishes and small problems like a lack of water (no, they don't even water them). As a night-shift employee, I get first dibs on their expired stock, including said plants, and I can say, it is a massive over reaction to avoid such plants for such minor problems. Some of the plants have bounced back within 72 hours of being in my house, so don't be put off by slightly yellow leaves, drooping etc. I have been working for them for 4 months now, and I have received about £300 worth of house and garden plants completely free of charge. I have plants in 3 rooms of my house and I have only paid £10 for around 30 plants!
BTW, calla lilies seem to be the biggest offender for looking neglected. Give them a little bit of liquid feed and they bounce right back. They are hardy in the UK too, so you can even chuck the bulbs in the ground and forget about them. Don't be put off on plants with minor issues.
I get what you’re saying but if you’re paying full price for a plant with yellow leaves etc you probably don’t want to risk it and just choose one that is in better shape.
I'm 72, so yes I have learned a few things about plants. I use to have alot more plants. I don't have alot of room for them. Your right even the little pothos can grow fast and take up alot of room. I have stopped buying them and propagating them for now. It is sad to throw out the stems I cut off. Great information your giving out. Probably save money and time for the people who love plants. About 13 or 14 yrs. ago, a friend at work gave me 3 leaf cuttings from her monstera. I have divided it numerous times when it gets huge. I cut it back and repot it. It's a monster now. I haven't been too long doing just that and it's already taken over the end of my livingroom. It's beautiful. I sent some cuttings to friends all over the country. They love it too.

I'm a beginner in the plant hobby and the trick that I use is that I have a paper in my pocket with beginner plant species and the level of light they need (to know if they would fit in my south or north window) and I also have a list of plants that are traps. You're actually the one who gave me this idea with your video with best and worst plants and it's been working well so far, i have the paper with me all times because i don't feel like googling a bunch of Latin names every time i go shopping

About a month ago I found a gorgeous, well priced, 10-12” potted snake plant. Thought it would be perfect in my living room. I went to pick it up, to walk it out and thought…”will this even fit in my car? 😬” I managed to wiggle it into the back seat, S/O to my girlfriend for riding home on the dash 😅. When I got that thing indoors, from the floor, it stood just as tall as my 65” TV that’s placed on a stand. Me and my girlfriend looked at each other and thought “it didn’t look this big @ Home Depot 🥴”

As a plant store employee I agree with everything you say here. I often deal with customers who are dead set on getting a plant that won't grow in their dark apartment with a north-facing window across from a skyscraper... I guess experience is the best teacher. But I do like to encourage new growers especially to choose something they'll be successful with. That way they'll enjoy the experience rather than have immediate disappointment and decide they can't grow plants.

I started buying small plants only about 6 months ago and it helped me understand plants so much better.
For the cost of one medium plant you can get 4 to 6 mini ones.
It's easier to understand them too in terms of care because there is less soil. Helps them survive chronic over waterers like me and helps me learn to hold back more.
Also if they die, you are only losing about a fiver.

Not just that, but baby plants adapt easier to your environment as well as they don't need to make as many changes as a larger one.
Takea fiddle, for example: The big ones are a pain to move, but the bonsai fiddles adapt just as quickly as any other plant.
For the pests, someone said on Reddit... 'I don't quarantine. It's survival of the fittest in my house' 😂😂😂😂

Can't stress enough how much you should check for pests. Not just when buying plants but also flower bouquets, bought and self plucked outside. And NEVER bring in propagations from your garden inside. I got half my house plants infected with thrips that way last year and Im still dealing with the remnants.... Almost a year later. They're the absolute worst pest. Nothing like removing fungus gnats.

I was at a lovely garden centre yesterday. I was telling my friend about all the things I have learned about the unusual plants there , and the care that they need from your channel. I had to stop myself buying anything though, because there were fungus gnats flying everywhere! So sad.

I've noticed buying small plants gives them better chances of surviving well, also I hate cacti sellers, they often add and use too much organic stuff in the soil leading to rotting cacti as soon as someone starts watering them normally, I bought a bunny ear cactus the other week and had to split it into multiple smaller ones from the pads as the main one was dying

Over-buying is certainly a problem for me. I'm already scratching my head on how to provide enough moisture when I am away, especially if it is during the hottest months. However it is all worthed, enjoying the greenary around you. Thanks for sharing 😂

I've wanted a peace lily for a while and saw them when visiting a massive megastore. I remembered your older "check the plants before buying" and even though some had nice leaves or flowering, there was something suspicious coloring or wilting leaves in all of them and I ended up not taking any. And I think I did the right choice, they would've perhaps infected my other plants or died down for weeks or months before pushing back up as a bare stem. So thanks for that.

Peace lily is such a common plant, you really shouldn't have to settle for less than healthy. Mine is also a pretty resilient plant, so if they aren't healthy at the store, the store really, really isn't taking care of them well.
As a new plant lover, your advice is what I need. I see myself in the future when buying baby plants. I bought big grown trees. Turned out, I killed them 😓😭

Thank you so much for all the intense attention you pay to giving out the best information. It is so helpful. I wish i knew about not buy a full fledge grown Cat palm for my living room. It was loaded with spidermites in beknownst to me right away. I treated it with neem oil spray and held back on water. I ended up having to cut a bunch of the fronds off. 😢 it it just now starting to come back. Lesson learnt. 😊

My fastest growing plant is easily the wax ivy. I kid you not, I was away for two weeks on holiday and this plant pushed out 20 more centimeters full of leaves. I often forget to put climbing plants on a trellis and this plant always needs more space to climb on. To me this is super stressful, as I'm also not very creative in ways to put this plant nicely on display. Had I known how fast it grows, I wouldn't have bought it.
I'm happy you have the same opinion about baby plants. I'm always so excited to see it push out new growth and it so fast in that state, too. Also I found that especially plants that don't like to be moved too much or else they lose their leaves are doing better when bought as a baby. It can grow into your conditions and be more resilient. If you buy it big, it has already grown into the perfect environment that normal household conditions cannot offer

I Impulse bought. lol. But I knew what I wanted. I live far from the cities and hate driving. I prepared the space and I got three grow lights to place around. I got better than I excepted regarding varieties and such. I gave up ALL outdoor flowers this years and put the money toward this new hobby instead. So really my outside perennials(?) are so robust with flowers everywhere you don't really miss all the potted flowers I would have went nuts on. Love and Peace.
I spend so much time in the store when looking for plants, thanks to your tips. Was looking at a few Monstera Perus that looked really good, but some of them had the tell tale sign of spider mites - webbing near the stem. Also was looking at baby calatheas and I picked one up that straight up had a bug on it! Immediately put it down.

My most recent buy and die was a flowering goldfish vine. 😢 so pretty and jungly. All but few it’s leaves fell off had me sweeping it up every day. Think it was needing more direct sun and humidity

I think it sometimes depends on the plant. In my experience, some of the smaller plants I have bought have died very quickly, while the medium-larger plants have done much better. But the older the plant is, the less time it has to thrive until it eventually ages and declines. I haven't detected a sure pattern yet, but I only buy smaller plants now if they are easier to care for and hardier. If they require more humidity or more care in general, I tend to go for medium size or bigger.

I do spend a LOT of time looking for pests before I buy a plant - even to the extent of taking my magnifying glass with me. I’m turning into a mad plant owner 🤤🥴 Thanks for the good advice. Some of it at least, seems to be sinking in lol

Yesterday I buy 4 small planta for 17$ CAD, that was a super deal! 2 peperonia, 1 suculent that I've never seen before and one calcium callisia. All root bound and the suculent was diying😢

It really is. Had this issue in IKEA a couple of months ago.
I only have 15 plants and it is plenty for me. I've had most of them for over 30+ years and my rule of thumb is only buy when one dies. I like to travel a bit so I don't want to ask a person to water them. Most of them are easy, low maintenance, low watering needs so no worry. I love plants but I enjoy not feeling married to them and constantly fuss over them. I give them lots of love and haven't had pest issues in over 10 years. I'm addicted to simply living life to its fullest :))

I like to rescue plants from my local garden center. They always have a section where they put plants nobody wants to buy. A lot of times it's just because their blooming period for the year is over, but nothing else is wrong with it. Yes, sometimes there are also plants which have some issues, but for 1-2€ or even less you can't do anything wrong, as long as you know how to deal with it. If it dies, I didn't loose a lot of money. If it survives, I can be proud that I saved it.
One time I found a ficus elastica there for only 1€ and there was simply nothing wrong with it. It's thriving in my home now for over a year. Similar some other planets I got there for cheap.

Whenever I see a plant I want to buy, I always open the PictureThis app on my phone, which is a plant identifier app. I only use the free version, which turned out to be perfectly enough, because it tells me the exact nmae of the plant with high accuracy, the current health state (I only buy a plant if the app says it it healthy or or at least okay), the basic needs (light, watering) and rates the general caring difficulty as easy, moderate or hard. Of course it is not perfect but it often helped me to realize that I don't need a that specific plant because I don't have enough place in the very bright places or sometimes I simply don't want a plant described as hard to care for. I can very much recommend it to reduce impluse buying and helping with identification.

Thank you so much for your commentary. My collection is big as well. I just love plants! But over time the ugly ducklings have to go and the best ones, the ones that do well for me are the keepers. My worst plant purchase was a Geo! I don’t think anyone could keep them going. I have a carnivorous plant for the gnats! Not a Venus. It’s something else. Tall tubes with a fluffy topper that’s propped open. Anything going in will not be coming out.

Regarding pests: my plants have suffered major spider mite infestations which are difficult (and sometimes impossible) to mitigate. As a result, I have taken to not only isolating the new plants I purchase, but also spraying them with Safe brand insecticidal soap, and [typically] repotting in all new soil. It's a tedious process, but mites suck and I'm over it 🤷🏾♂

Fantastic tip for looking for pests, both in your plants at home and before you buy.....us plant lovers have an eye for tiny pests and signs of pests but if your eye site isn't great (or even if it is) it's easy to miss them. I have a small, hand held microscope. It was about $16 or less on amazon and only magnifies enough to get a good look. It's only about 3 inches long and Bluetooth connects to my phone. If you are OFTEN impulse buying plants like me, it helps to run this under the leaves and see things you wouldn't have before. Also, if you start seeing signs of pests on the plants you already own, it never hurts to take a look.

I absolutely agree. Plants take up space in our homes. Another tip before making a plant purchase, check to see if that plant is suitable for your climate where you live. See it all too much in big plant stores, they sell a plethora of plants and not all of them will thrive properly in our climate. Considering houseplants typically grow and come from an ideal growing environment (Greenhouse). Some counties sadly some houseplants won't thrive well as in other countries and climates.
Regarding fungus gnats, sadly this is something we can deal with, those little "pests" live in the soil and don't damage the plant. They mainly feed on fungus. I just keep some sticky traps on hand or buying cinnamon and sprinkle it on top layer of soil.

I agree with all you said! I prefer to buy baby plants, but it's so hard to find them in my town, but as soon as I get the new plant if it is possible I propagate it in the first week. I made a mistake couple of months ago, bought a ficus tineke that had 2 bad leaves, I suspected it was over watered, so I decided to dry it out nicely, cut the bad leaves and waited, but it died after only a week, I should've re potted it immediately into drier soil when I already saw the soil was too wet :(

Ah your face when looking at the plant, probably not thinking "will this fit into my car?" I only buy baby plants as my space is small right now and the ones I have are slow growers. I got two baby Ficus and mostly the dwarf Sansevieria Hahnii plants. I did mistakenly buy a draceana compacta, that will grow large but it grows slowly enough to be okay for now.
I got a plant from online with pests on I didn't notice till a few days later...the plant is currently in rehab. I was more surprised they appeared to use regular compost as there was no sign of perlite etc in it. Just a super dense dark wet soil.

My plant addiction is so bad that when I refused to go on vacation with my husband fearing my plants would die and I wouldn’t let anyone take care of them( they are my babies, and we would be gone for 14 days) my husband had a serious talk with me😂has it helped………..not yet😂and also. I stick plants that need a lot of water in the bathtub with a few inches of water . All my pots are non porous so the bathtub water only adds humidity to the air . That keeps for 2 weeks. I’ve never lost a plant doing that . The outdoor houseplants plants come inside and the indoor plants sit away from the windows. It can get to over 90F ( about 35C ) in the summer in NYC
I used to kill plants no matter what. My bf is the one who likes plants and over the last year and a half I can proudly say I don't kill them anymore and even was the one who save our thai constellation! Now I enjoy getting the less fortunate and clearance plants to help rehab them 💖

About 2 years ago I changed office, we moved into a bigger and brighter space. I bought baby plants for my desk and shelves. I lost a baby croton, I think it was a scam, it could have been just a stem, planted in small pot with no roots. Since that episode I always check the roots before buying plants.
Currently, I have 3 ficus elastica, 1 ficus benjamin, 1 clusia, 1 dracena tricolor, 1 peperomia, 1 baby zz, 1 hoya, 1 anthurium (which is the only one struggling in making new buds/flowers).
Baby plants are growing and thriving.🤩🌿

One bonus about buying smaller plants is when it gets bigger you can sell it for more than the plant and new pot cost you, then buy a new smaller plant and start again.
I have cactus that I have had for 5+ years that cost very little and now they are the size that would cost me £50+. But can bring myself to sell any of them yet

I would really like to learn when the plant is considered root bound and in need of repotting. I’ve seen all those extreme pics where the plant is all roots and no soil, but it would be nice to see some milder examples which would sort out the question “to repot or not to repot” once and for all

I can pull most plants around including the death's door, supermarket reduced variety but I've had one spectacular failure and it was supposed to be a dead easy one. I bought a healthy ZZ plant - I followed all the online advice and in spite of my best efforts, it was determined to die. It took it two years of increasing decrepitude before it finally succeeded in putting up two fingers and expiring.

@@SheffieldMadePlants No idea - I did everything by the book and it started it's death after a couple of months. I tried different light levels, I was mega careful with the watering regime but over time, it shed leaves and individual stems gave up the ghost. One lonely stem held on for a long time but eventually went the way of the others. There was obviously something that it didn't like but I've no idea what.
It may have been a death cage. Many zz's have those now :((

oh how I wished I had seen this video a month ago. I bought a few varieties of snake plants and didn't do any of your rules, really. Except I knew what variety I wanted. I didn't even look at the shape the plant was in if I saw new shoots coming up. And I certainly didn't think to quarantine them. I haven't seen any bugs, but now all of my plants have spots on their leaves. Some white, but mostly brown spots. I've gone back to the plant store, but they said they have no idea what is wrong with the plants or how to fix them. I just don't want to lose all my plants. It is devastating.

Ive really cut back my buying in big box stores. I only buy in small quantities from known growers now. Ive had so many plants die in the beginning because i didnt know what i was doing and what to look for, now i do. I occasionally do buy one here and there from a big box store if i think i can handle it and give it what it needs.

I actually use to buy ugly and almost dead tropical plants that I found always in the corner of those garden areas in malls, asking for a big discount, then I put them in the terrarium and revive them. (Even tho most won't change their withered appeareance they will still shoot new baby plants or new buds and regrow.)

I bought a Jade plant yesterday, actually there are 6 in the pot. I looked at the roots and looked at the plant and saw nothing of concern. When I got it home I placed it away from my other plants in the window and through the day everytime I went close to it, it had little webs with black specks dangling down. So as soon as the sun was mostly down I put peroxide in a spray bottle and soaked all the leaves and the soil and the roots and wiped down the entire pot with it and the cover pot. I haven't seen another spider mite since. I'm obviously paying attention today and will for several days as I know they may hatch again, but I'm happy I didn't make that "it looks good" mistake and place it immediately with the other plants by the grow lights. There was and is no webbing at time of purchase so I'm thinking that it had eggs that hatched in the warmth yesterday when I brought it home. So much easier (and cheaper) to clean up ONE plant than to have to go through the entire collection and treat everyone!
All of my plants I try to buy as babies or juvenile 4-6 inch pot, I save money on the plant this way and I personally find that they don't freak out acclimating to the new climate the way an older plant does. Example, my fiddle leaf fig and Bambino were both in 4 inch pots a year ago and only about 20cm tall. I've been able to move them around and have no typical fiddle freak outs, not even when they needed repotted. They're both up to my waist now from the floor while they were shelf plants left summer! I am 99% sure that if I had spent 100+ on the size I am aiming for that I would've had massive leaf drop having a plant that matured in the perfect conditions which my home is not!
And we you always say, a moisture meter is so important! My finger doesn't reach the bottom and even if it did, my perception of dry often is still in the green , esp with my ZZ! Also, my rhizome, corm etc plants are hard to get the moisture meter in now BC of their under ground growth so my finger doesn't go in! Sometimes it takes 4 or 5 tries to get the moisture meter probe into these bulbous plants only for me to find out they don't need water 🤣

I’m new to the gardening world. I bought a nightmare, a beautiful nightmare! Got it home put it in quarantine, shortly after I realized it had the signs of spider mites. I took it to my garage and started cleaning it. At this point I realized it had severe root rot with white worms as a bonus slithering in the dirt it also had several caterpillars. I ended up tossing this plant as every plant was slowly dying, it had 6 different species. This video would’ve helped me not buy that! Lol. Lesson learned the hard way!

Hello. Iv seen that you put water in the bottom. That sounds great, especially if it reduces the risk of bugs. I have certain plants that don't like to sit with their feet in water. How would you recommend dealing with this issue. Thank you hun xx
I tend not to worry about it. The plant soaks up the water quickly if you wait till the soil is dry. If you're worried you can top water your sensitive plants.

The bg orange box stores are notorious for pests on their overpriced plants. Repotted a large cat palm in the house. Pulled it out of the pot and 100+ baby roaches came running out. 10 years later, it's still an issue. The orange store offered me a can of Raid to rectify the issue lol.

i love buying baby plants. The big problem is, the lack of baby plant availability of smaller versions of plant X.
Normally easier to find the smaller ones round my way
I'm a bit addicted to plants now (might be an understatement, I started wanting plants last year in August, and now I own something like 130 with both orchids and other plants). I mainly buy "baby plants", sometimes I get nice surprises in garden centers for lile 3 or 4€, or at least very small plants. Because I know I only have a flat and it's not that big, not everywhere good light,...
Rationally, I know these plants will grow and require more space, but somehow my brain pushes that problem away. We'll deal when the time comes :D

I have to keep my house under 70 degrees F. 😩 I cannot keep tropical plants alive indoors and I have had to just get over it. 😑 Also, my cats will eat any plant or nearly kill themselves trying to get to the plant. My fat cat will nibble a plant... go vomit... then come back and immediately lick the plant again. So.... I am limited, severely. And I pack my high shelves with items to prevent furrbabies from jumping up on the shelves.

I bought a calathea from M&S and he's such a wanker. He crisps up out of nowhere....requires lots of water, until suddenly he doesn't. I've given up any semblance of routine with him, I just cater to his every need.
And yes, I've bought a huge monstera which I no longer have space for.

My obsession with plants happened when my friend JENNIFER 😂 showed me a video on Facebook. Then all of a sudden boom I have plants, I now have 46 plants. The majority are all pet friendly, and maybe 5 are not. The toxic plants are placed on higher shelves to keep my 2 cats away. I need to stop buying plants, will I stop that will be a mystery😂
