FREEZE DRIED DOG FOOD RECIPE --Homemade vs. Store Bought

  • Stay tuned to the end and i'll give you the cost comparison for homemade dog food vs. store bought. Here is my freeze dried dog food recipe. I used a website called balanceit.com
It allows you to add all different kinds of proteins, vegetables, fruits and others. If you are too high or too low on a certain item, you can adjust the recipe. Freeze dried dog food is expensive and does not always have all natural ingredients in it. If you freeze dry your own dog food recipe, you can add less or take away more in your recipe to accommodate your dog's needs. For those of you that are not familiar with the Harvestright Freeze dryer, it's a home free dryer that allows you to preserve foods for 20+ years.

I make raw freeze dried dog food and have been doing this for almost 10 years now. Some of the ingredients I use is: uncooked, ground beef, turkey & chicken. I will also put in some but not always the origins. I like to keep mixing it up. I also use my meat grinder and do whole chicken and other meats with the bone in, the bones are good for them. I also use brown rice and brown rice only. I use hard boiled eggs, ground up with the shell as your dog needs the calcium and can digest it without any problems. Remember they have very different enzymes and the enzymes to break down and digest properly. Not always do I put fruit or vegetables in, any of the different combos I make. I like to mix it up the recipes for them. It’s really not necessary for them to have that much fruit & veggies, some is beneficial but not a lot. I keep everything raw as you will loose and kill off the nutritional value(s)and all the other components your dog will need. I really spoil my dogs, we have 3. I also like to use DINOVITE in my recipe(s) it gives you the peace of mind and insures that your dog is getting everything they naturally need. It sure amps up your dog food as well as your dogs health, coat, skin, mind and just overall everything. The dogs look great and do not look their ages nor act their age. Our Vet is pretty impressed by what they see in our dogs and we do not see him /the vet very often, which is great as they are expensive! Usually for update the shots. I couldn’t be more pleased with how we feed and what we give our dogs.

I have two 100+ lbs Rottweilers. We make about 90 lb batches. It is a 2 day project! We use beef, chicken, black beans that I soak over night/cook. I add frozen veggies (peas and carrots). To make it bind a bit we add oatmeal. They preferred the oatmeal over rice. It is so much work but they love it and it's so much healthier for them. Just got another Rottie puppy! 🙄😴

One more thing, you could freeze dry it raw and preserve the enzymes and nutrients that cooking removes. Just a thought. Making your own is better than commercial dog food by far tho! Bravo to you to think outside the box of kibble!!!

I do ground chicken, eggs, flax seeds, oatmeal , sweet potatoes or carrots , canned green beans and mix everything like a mush and dehydrate. I ordered a freeze dryer so I will freeze dry it now. That is the only thing my dogs will eat . I do everything raw. You are right, simplify your life, do it raw except the rice of course. I don’t do rice, I use oatmeal. They love dehydrated beef liver and chicken feet.

Use frozen corn. It's already frozen and will FD faster. Plus, if it's frozen when picked fresh, it will actually have more nutrients than your "fresh" corn which is actually 5 to 7 days old at the store.

I have made dog food numerous times. We have 4 dogs, so we split it with purchased dog food once a day. I ordered a 50# bag of dried peas. So I save a lot of $ there. I also save certain scraps to add in. I also pulverize the egg shells and use them (calcium). There are things you can do to bring the $ down but yes, A LOT OF WORK!!

We also put our mixture into a pastry bag and loaded out trays using the pastry bag making log shaped strips onto the trays. We found this reduces drying times. Our recipe is similar to yours.

Great video! I’m making our two Golden Retriever’s food now and about to freeze dry for the first time. You are so right! It IS a ton of work but that’s okay. I actually purchased a “bus tub” from Sam’s Club that restaurants use to pick up dirty dishes… it’s a fabulous tub for dumping all my ingredients into then hand mixing! I then pour the meat into the large aluminum pans I get at Sam’s club. I bake them at 325 for 45-60 min. I cool at room temp and refrigerate overnight. I made a quadruple batch last night and am dividing today … I have the new Harvest Right XL Commercial 7 tray unit. I was thankful you shared 48 hours to process it all! I will plan on that to get the weekend off :-) haha
Also, ziplock sandwich baggies are perfect size for the XL tray! I can fit two across and five down and I am going to get 70 portions in one run of freeze drying ( hear me party!?) I am pre-freezing the portions so I will let you know how long it takes to freeze dry the cooked product! God bless! I love your videos!!

I don't have a freeze dryer but I do make my dog food. Dogs are carnivorous so they need a bigger meat portion than everything else. I don't use pumpkin but do put in some dehydrated sweet potato but sparely as there is a lot of sugar in the potatoes I use the brown rice no corn as it is empty calories. My recipe is 12 pounds chicken, 2 cups dry brown rice, peas and carrots frozen bag, green beans frozen, and I add cut up apples or blueberries depending on what I have. I instant pot my chicken with 2 cups water take the chicken out to a hugh bowl to cool then instant pot everything else in the juices. mix everything in the bowl. and freeze, when I serve he gets cheese on top or yogurt on the side. My dog doesn't like eggs and doesn't do well with turkey or hamburger. He only weigh 20 lbs so this will last almost a month for us. It would be awesome to be able to freeze dry as it takes up so much space in my garage freezer and is a pain when traveling. My dog is almost 10 yrs and has been on this since I got him. Vet says that he is extremely healthy for his age.

Very cool Brian - I have been thinking what to do for my wife's dogs, (2 small dogs) You are right - this looks like a lot of work. I'm thinking I'll dry the canned food they already get in 1/4 cup patties and feed it dry with their kibbles. It's more for a SHTF event anyway - not for everyday. This is what they get everyday already. Or not - the cans will keep nicely on the shelf for years.
Good talk Brian - you talked me out of it. Thanks.
I see some heaters in the comments - seems everyone has a better idea...right? Just do what you do Brian - thanks for the work and this informative video.

My mother in law makes all of her dogs food and she gave me ideas and the process. After doing it once for this video, i will never do it again. I do think that it is better for the dog, but there are plenty of good store bought alternatives that are comparable or close. This was so much work! I love my pup, but i don't even put that much work into my biggest cook for the family.

The freeze dryer makes the best raw liver treats. My dogs prefer these to the ones from the pet store. I would add some liver, kidney and heart to the mix, but your recipe sounds good. Feeding real food for dogs is always pricier than commercial dog food but oh so much better for them.

Preserving my dogs homemade food is the exact reason I'm researching freeze dryers and watching way to many videos lol. Also very excited to do human food as well.
The main recipe I use is from Judy Morgan's yin & yang book, basic puploaf. It's a complete and balanced meal. Everything is ground up and mixed together. A couple concerns I have is if I can freeze dry the organ mean (liver, heart, gizzards) and there's also a small amount of flax seed oil. All the other ingredients I believe have been covered in other videos.
If anyone can answer this question that would be amazing because my freezer and deep freezer are over run with dog food 😆 plus if I lose power for to long all her food will go bad.

I dont make this specific diet. I bake or make fresh just because I have 2 critters 1 decent med-LG dog and a cat. Plus this time we are donating to the shelter. I'm trying something different this year also being the fact I dont have a freez drier and have to use my over. I ground and lightly baked the turkey. But this time I pureed it with veggies and fruit. (No corn). Most shelter dogs struggle with sensitivity. Anyway I've been occasionally doing home cooked meals and and I've noticed a difference in his poop. They say if a dogs poop is normal and only once a day. They are absorbing more nutrients. I've noticed a difference in both of their coats and mental health.

You are doing this the hard way! Get a big canning pot (at your hardware store.) Dump in the cottage cheese, pumpkin and beans. Chop up apples in food processor and dump in pot. Lightly cook carrots, sweet potatoes and broccoli. Chop in processor and dump in pot. Put meat in processor after it's cooked and dump in pot. Scramble eggs and dump in pot. Dump in brown rice when cooked. Mix it all up thoroughly and cool. Then put in trays and cool.

If you are a hunter or have access to innards, that's what drives dogs CRAZY. And, it's crazy good for them & often free or very cheap to fill out the meals. As well as you can find produce that is not pretty or has some spots on it or bruised, very cheaply, if you don't grow your own. If you have the space, freeze all of the individual ingredients until you have enough and time to cook and FD them. You can always keep a batch or two in your fridge and freezer as well.

Still waiting for my FD..hopefully we get it first part of July. One of the biggest reasons for ordering a FD is I make my dogs their food..I have been doing this for over 20 years and under the supervision of a vet. Your recipe isn’t bad, I do raw organic with bones ground(chicken turkey pheasant duck). For bigger animals such as beef, bison, pork ,elk I use bone meal. It is really really important that bone meal be included. Amazon sells k-cal which I highly recommend for pets. You MUST NOT use garden bone meal! Use either bone meal made for pets or humans. I would be careful about the rice and corn..they can cause allergies. I would also look at adding greens such as bok choy, Swiss chard and or kale. If you FD the eggs scrambled with the shells broken up, it could be the calcium source as well. The other thing that is good for dogs is blueberries. I give them as well. Maybe look at a complete vitamin mix to make sure all their nutritional needs are met..Others wise, homemade food made with real ingredients is the best for your fur babies. You know none of the ingredients will be recalled..and there is nothing artificial in their food. 💕🐶

So I made this recipe today. It is a lot of work. I did put all of my items into a large roaster and cooked that way. I mixed all the cooked items with the bone cooked items like pumpkin, yogurt and apples in a large aluminum pan. I fed my dogs dinner and filled the FD. Probably another 5 days or food left. Awesome recipe, thanks for videoing this. Will you try FD some dog treats next?

make sure to check if it has all the vitamins, minerals and omega your dog needs or your dog likely to have health issues because of that. You might wanna add suplements or natural sources for that but check if vitamins or minerals go bad if it's cooked. Also I would skip corn and rice. Just sweet patatoes have enough carbs or just rice.

If you know the weight of the food before you freeze dry it and if you know the weight of the food after, that difference is the weight of water. If starting weight is 2 pounds and dried weight is 1 pound, you would have to add 1 pound of water to reconstitute it. Since a cup of water is about 7.5 ounces, you'd have to add a little over 2 cups of water.

I am looking into buying one for that reason. Crunching the numbers, it would pay for itself quickly. I currently raw feed my dogs my own homemade food. I portion and freeze meals for 5 dogs once a month. Lots of work and freezer space. The only food that comes close in freeze dried form that is commercially available is Sojos. A 7lb bag of Sojos would feed my dogs (per the bag instructons) for just shy of a week! 1 bag is $120! That means I'd pay roughly $500/mo. for food. I just can't do that. The food I buy and process myself is about $150/mo. It would likely be less if I freeze dried it because then I am not using ziplocs and the like to store each meal, freezer space and so on. I could put it in an airtight container and scoop & rehydrate what is needed. My savings would be about $350-375/mo. At 350/mo, with dog food alone (I do plan on using it for more) it would pay for itself in less than 1 year. Those are very loose, conservative #s. YMMV

As prices rise, I would like to purchase kibble and store dog food (kibble) for long term use (15+ year shelf life). I know I can scrounge up food for myself when SHTF, but our 60 lb pups eat a lot (and are very active here on the farm) and we want to ensure they will always have food as well.
Right now, we do a combo of BARF (give the dogs a raw Cornish game hen or turkey neck) about every other day. They have access to kibble all day but for daily breakfast, I top their kibble with homemade dog food (1:1 ratio) each in separate bowls.

WOW! Pricy way to feed a dog! As for adding corn it is usually the first ingredient dog food companies use to make your dog food! That alone should tell you something. Their are so many dog foods on the market it drives you crazy. And thousands of opinions of who is right. I field trialed beagles for several years. The biggest problem was making sure your dog had the energy to make it through 8 hrs of a grueling pace in the trial. I believe conditioning was the first priority and second was nutrition. We always shopped for the best quality food on the market. I always thought protein was the most important ingredient until a vet pointed out to me that protein was the first thing a body burned off for energy. He told me fat is there for reserve energy and that was what would get my dog through to the end of the trial, so don't neglect the fat when you are making this dog food if you have a more athletic type dog. I currently own an American Bully and I feed him a 32% protein/ 22 % fat diet with 1 cup of raw venison added to it every day. He is a lean, muscular dog, high energy type dog. Not an ounce of fat on him! Fat is important, how much depends on how active your dog is. Another ingredient you should consider adding to your food is bone meal, easily acquired! Just take chicken bones and grind them to a pulp with a ninja food grinder. They are loaded with vitamins and nutrition. Be sure to check your bone meal for shards. Bottom line is if you love your pet feed him decent food not the 15.99 a bag of economy crap...It's junk even if the AAFCO says it ok.
