I have a few years on you and I can tell you for sure, you’ll always feel better when you do the right thing. Your integrity is something you really can’t put a dollar figure on and you can lose it with one rash decision based on only $. Good video.
Thanks, brotha! Hope you and yours are doing well! Happy holidays!
You did an exemplary thing. Being honest and treating people fairly is an increasingly rare act.
It's nice to see that there are still people with integrity such as yourself alive today. I believe your honesty and good business practices will benefit you in the long run.
Thanks, brotha!
I believe in karma. If you didn’t do right by customer it would have come back at you some way. It speaks volumes to your character.
This just speaks to your integrity. It will come back to you in other ways Jon.
You went above and beyond and you will be blessed for your heart and integrity!
Your a solid cat!
God bless you brother!🙏
You did the right thing and it happens. Sorry for your loss but you recovered well. I do everything I can when I work on a bike to make sure it’s 100% for the customer so I feel ya. Ride safe my friend
Thanks, brotha! Win some, lose some.
You did the right thing Jon. Your an honest and good dude.
You went above and beyond. You are a very honest and stand up guy. I would have offered to split the cost of repair with the buyer. What brand was the fuel pump the guy you bought from had put on? Obviously not an OEM or quality aftermarket one. This type of video series is very educational, I'd like to see more. Muchas Gracias for the shout out!
Thanks for the feedback, Easy Rider!
I dig it bro. Your a good man for standing behind your sales. I would buy from you any day. Ride safe and God bless
Yea, that fuel pump looks like an eBay special. They last 30 days or 30 feet whatever comes first! Same thing almost happened to me with a fuel pump on my Kawi. I tested a eBay factory fuel pump and found it was barely pumping the minimum amount, so I went with a Kawi factory pump. No issues since. Good Luck!
Yep, OEM with electronic parts always.
You are a solid stand up guy. Like some here have said I think an offer for half the bill would have been generous as well, I bet since you mentione d the fuel pump was recently replaced he was looking for help
Sure the monetary hit sucks but your integrity and self- respect is worth a lot more. Good on you. You did the right thing 100%.
You are a good guy. I recently had a fuel replacement, cost me about 850 parts and labor for factory replacement with 2 yr warranty. Lesson learned, ask for maintenance paperwork the next time you buy a bike.
Lesson learned for sure. Thanks, brotha!
Win one lose one it happens you did the right thing helping the buyer out that would be great if there were more people like you
Hi I just want to say that in that business things can go wrong once in awhile as long as it's not devastating you can make that 300 back on another deal that guy may buy another bike or send another customer that make up that 300.they way you handled that was honest an good business you should in no way feel bad more blessing will come to you for being what the world needs more of an that's honest business men my hat off to you.
Dude, I feel your pain I had a 2001 Honda Magna I owned it for 16 years and sold it for 3500 certified then when I went to get the certification I was told I needed 2800 in repairs new rotor, brakes tires, chain sprockets and rebuild all 4 carbs so it would run properly I sucked it up. told the buyer that was what I said and I would stand by the 3500 but I would not feel good about it he agreed to pay me for half the new parts. Shit happens. I am just glad I am not the only one that wants to treat people fair.I like your channel just subscribed.
I like ALL of your series cuzz no matter what I learn something new EVERYTIME!!! Salud amigo looks like I have some catching up to do! AND, u did the right thing in my book and that will show with future business and personal aspects of your life! 2 thumbs up!
Thanks, bro! Hope all has been well!
@@JonsMotoGarage been kinda crazy but tis the season
When buying and selling used bikes best to sell as is where is when I sell a used bike there's no warranty implied so if it breaks down the next day that ain't on me
Yes you lost money, but you did the RIGHT thing. It hurts now but I'm sure you'll benefit in the long run. Thanks for sharing and for being a standup seller.
Thanks, brotha!
Your a stand up guy .. you did the right thing ! God Bless
Dig it. Probably would have offered to split the charge, but glad there are honest people like you.
You did the right thing my man. Lesson learned is cheap, non-oem or equal parts are not a repair but next weeks problem. The previous owner was a douche. Next time call him out and walk away. Love the channel and Merry Christmas to you and your family.
I agree. You went above and beyond. “Caveat emptor “ is usually the name of the game in these situations. It sounds like the “mechanic “ the guy you bought it from was either him or his friend who did a rush job with cheap parts because he knew there was interest in the bike. But good on you for making it right.
The previous owner had a mobile mechanic do the work - I should've known better. Lol. Not that a mobile mechanic can't be good, but there's no recourse when something goes wrong. Had it been a shop, I could've taken it back and had them warranty the work since it only had 200 miles or so since the replacement. Live and learn. Lol.
Good man. You did the right thing and it will come back to you. Well done.
You’re a good man Charlie Brown. You did the right thing and you have to give to get.
I like your channel and I like your work ethic. I am the exact same way. I buy and sell bass guitars and amps and it used to be a killer income, but now as you know it's barely getting by, but my reputation is everything. If I have to give a full refund, like I did on a neck that was toast, and I had misdiagnosed it, I gave him a full refund and told him to keep the neck. Make a clock out of it. He was super impressed and OK with that, and it happens. I'm intact for the next round.
Handled it like a man would.
Respect brother.
Respect for you , your a standup guy 💪🏻👊🏻
Another takeaway is verify the parts used to fix were oem or better. Way to keep your integrity. 👍 It will pay off 10 fold in the long run.
👨👩👧 ❤
For sure! Lots of lessons learned on this one. Cost me about 3 credits worth at the local community college. Lol.
We need more good guys selling bikes like you out there.
Sorry to hear that sale turned into a ball of s#@t. I restore a lot of vintage 60's bikes and have sold several newer Harleys out of my garage over the last 45 years, total about 80 different bikes. With me it's ALWAYS cash only, sold "as is" and have your mechanic ck it first it you like. On the bill of sale it's noted the bike was checked by a mechanic (or offered) of buyers choice with the date and signed by the buyer. I never had one come back.
Bro your alright ! You will be blessed . Good to see their still good people out here . I would have done the samething . Cause we all been burned at one point .
Gravity pump's served me well so far on 40 year old bike.
Aftermarket fuel pumps are very expensive, which creates a big market on ebay for cheap substitutes of poor quality. Have heard this several times. Next fuel pump issue, get details to ensure OEM parts. Dig your channel Jon. Keep it coming!
Good to know! Thanks, brotha!
I sold a 1981 Honda cb750 as is, great condition. Two weeks after sale, the rotor went bad, I told him go ahead and replace the rotor, I'll cover it. I still was ahead on the sale. It ran great, but told him, after this, your situation.
Dang can write a book about this Kawasaki Voyager history with you
Lmao!!
Nice teaching moment ! Love my voyager !
did the righteous thing. you'll make it back in spades. enjoy christmas.
$300 loss sucks, Lesson learned? yep. $300 is a cheap lesson. Your integrity and conscience are priceless. Take your lump and move on. Besides, they buyer may refer you another customer.👍
Make sure it’s not a eBay special fuel pump ,some things should be factory parts. I learn the hard way.
Sold as is.but 3 days ...that's a bummer. Easy for the buyer to speculate that you knew. Tuff situation. You did a noble deed
Hey man, you did exactly the right thing. I've run my own business for 40 years now and that's the only thing you can do to keep your reputation. At the next barbecue, bike night, or rally , you can bet your last dollar EVERYONE will hear the story and pay close attention to your response, you did the stand up thing and everyone loves that outcome and it will come back to you. However if you were a shit head, well that spreads like wildfire even out of biking circles. Everyone HATES that shit and pays closer attention to it, and that can crush you. Especially with today's media. Good Job!
Thanks, brotha!
Men should always be judged on their character. Don’t doubt yourself for what you’ve done, as only real men choose the right path...way to go brother!!
Hey Jon bro , there's dropkicks trying rip us regular guy's off all the time ,we are good, they are bad, Norton Commando dude from Sth Auckland NZ, been in WA Australia for 30years love you guys.
Your a good man John!
Total bummer! Your a good guy and a man of your word.
Take away - only deal with DRZs. Thus no fuel pump issues. HAYYY OHHH.
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO EVERYONE.
Hahaha! Drz comes with its own set of issues - can't stay on one wheel, rear fender gets scraped up, etc etc. Hahaha!
I really enjoyed this series. If you want to do more like it, I'll gladly watch.
I'm with you on how you looked after the dude after the sale. I've been burnt that way too..
Sold a truck, the guy drove it about 700 miles away (to his home) and called saying the motor was blown..
I sent 1000 back so he could get it looked after. Turns out the motor wasn't shot. He just noticed that there had been moisture in the coolant over flow from a previous oil cooler failure, and panicked.
He would never return the money tho
Taylor St. Pierre Damn!
@@paintup46 Jon is still right tho.
Dont burn people.
Life is good as a result
Taylor St. Pierre yes sir, I agree
Thanks, brotha! That's a drag regarding the truck, but I know where you're coming from. Live and learn, and learn again. Lol.
I installed one of these "Quantum" Fuel pump kit ( including regulator and filter) into my 03 Road King. did not work correctly. contacted the seller, under warranty, they sent me another one ( fuel pump only) this time. after replacing the first one, the bike runs great. my understanding is the first fuel pump did nor produce enough PSI. these are made in Chino ( like all the other ones... lol ) but Lockley, these Quantum have fuel pumps have long time warranty.
I would have taken it back to the last guy who fixed it....
Jon, you can't anticipate everything, it doesn't matter if you checked on fuel pump warranty or not, it could have easily been something else, an wire that was connected, a pinched/grounded wire in re-install, clogged fuel filter... You sell a bike "as is" no warranty expected. BUT i get it you want to keep a good rep. What you should have done & i do, specially on a bigger repair costs. Agree to pay 1/2, as a buyer i would appreciate that from the seller & be truly grateful for the offer. Next time, don't be so generous. SPLIT the cost! & then the buyer would be more open to find the best deal too.
This is true. Lesson learned on this one.
Your a good man with high morals!!!
Way to "man up" and do what it right . owned glass business for a number of years in the past and various ventures including bartering used merchandise off CL . seems every time I have gave someone a bottom dollar deal it's always came back to bite me hard . I was told many years ago and happy customer will gladly tell 10 friends , a pissed off customer will go out of their way to insure as many people they can and usually it will never end . We must do what is going right and stand apart for m those that don't . people will know juts by talking to us that we are honest personable and trustworthy . been told that and I believe it 100℅ . Peace bro now I am a subscriber after my first video good job and thanks
Thanks, brotha! I appreciate the support! Yeah, a tough loss in the short but better off in the long run.
Had this same issue with a vstar and aftermarket fuel pump. ..sucks when you not only loose money but time as well.
Yeah, the time lost is a drag for sure. Live and learn.
Had a 06 nomad and the pump mating seal leak. The design causes this after certain milage and you gotta pull the motor and split the motor. It's not fun or cheap(at a shop)
You're a great man just solid dude thumbs up😎👍
I would have told him i will pay for labor. This coming from a retired dealer. Even in a situation like this, the customer is more than happy with pay half deal. Because, they are used to being stiffed. Another option sell him a $200 warranty, separate checking account, and like you said this happens couple times a year the money is there separate from your deAl. I did this for years with used cars took in an average of 60k a year on warranties. Put out less than average 5k. You have no idea how profitable that is, and the customer loves you for it.
It sucks but i think you did right. Maybe coukd have offered to pay half. The most important thing is you maintained or even improved your reputation.
Post mortum / lessons learned is key to any successful business, even fortune 100.
Good on you for doing that!
If I was the guy who bought it, it was on me. It’s a used bike and sold privately, not in a dealership. My current bike is an 05 fatboy. It didn’t run right because maintenance was due and the previous owner changed the exhaust without tuning it. Did I bother to ask him to pay for the tuner and maintenance? Of course not. I knew exactly what I got myself into. If I was the one who sold the bike, it won’t be my problem to pay for the fix either.
love the content, subbed
Thanks, brotha! I appreciate the support!
That's a hard lesson for something you didn't cause. I NEVER use after market POS China parts. They will leave you sitting on the side of the road every time. Previous owner just wanted it running as cheap as possible and long enough to sell. Factory parts are expensive but 99% of the time, you won't have to do the job over again.
You did the right thing. I know it sucks but you did learn from it.
You did the right thing brother! I would have sane the same except I would have installed the pump myself!
I bought a Stator on Ebay for 100 dollars or so for a Honda VT800. I went to replace it and it was not even a close match. Since like 3 months had passed since I bought it I ate it.
Great video.
You are a class act. Nice job.
I enjoy your videos. 🤘⚡️🤘
Thanks, brotha! I appreciate the support!
Im willing to bet it was the shyt aftermarket pump or something to do with the fuel pump housing
The Fuel Pump was an Ebay Special....
I'm thinking this new fuel pump is going to go bad quickly. I think something is shorting it out. The problem is somewhere up the line. The seller most likely changed it 3 times already, that's why he was happy to get it out of his garage. It only cost him 450 because he installed it himself, when someone says " I'm not mechanically inclined" really means, shits fucked up, I know it, but I'm going to play stupid.
U did the right thing!
You did the right thing. Stand up guy.
Me personally. I would have either taken the bike back and then put a factory pump in it myself after some research; or agreed to pay half the price of the pump. No sense in giving the buyer something better than what was already there. It all depends though. If you have a reputation to preserve or want to give the appearance of being a commendable dude on your site for more subscribers then it's definitely advantageous to do what you did. That's not to say your motives were wrong even with the seemingly good gesture. Either way you are good to go.
He might have used an indy shop, so cost was lower. However, this is why you spend the money on quality brand parts, some things you can skimp on but fuel pumps and almost all engine related parts should be top quality stuff.
yeah, he had a mobile mechanic do the work. I don't think the previous owner was necessarily looking to screw me over, but a drag nonetheless.
I sold a bike to a Med student from Saudi, he went out crashed it, before he transferred the title, he sent it to a dealer and had it rebuilt, I got sued, and lost! Now I was on the hook for $2800.00 for repair. I did not pay the $2800, but when he finally decided to transfer the title, I decided to pay the Notary fees and state taxes, I wrote a check for $88.00, he altered the check and made it $880.00, the bank went after him, Instant Karma?? The bank pressed charges for bank fraud, and he wound up losing his student visa 5 weeks before he graduated. Got deported after 7.5 years of med school...What goes around comes around.
Dang, that's a crazy story there! I'll take a bad fuel pump any day over that. Lol. Thanks for sharing!
Integrity....Priceless
My motto is....Wisdom usually costs money:)
The most important is the reputations the money lost
Unfortunately it comes with having a side hustle like this and being honest stand up guy. That being said doing the right thing isn’t always easy but in the long run what you put out there comes back to you while this may have cost you a couple of hundies it’s cheap positive karma I’m a firm believer in karma just keep doing the right thing brother it will pay you back in the end.
I have bought and sold over 40 bikes in San Diego. I Live by one rule once the title has been signed, the deal is done no matter what the circumstance
Well, it all depends on how you represent the bike. If you’re bragging about it having a new fuel pump ...., then you are somewhat liable. If you’re selling it simply as buyer beware making no claims about anything, then offerings go down in the tank. As with all things, it’s all relative.
1 thing is you can go to sleep at night knowing you treated that buyer like you would want to be treated. Yes the loss is not good but money is not everything. Doing the right thing was best thing to do. I firmly believe It will come back to you many times over.
You are an honorable man.
I congratulate you for doing the right thing for another innocent person. That took guts and demonstrates you are not out to screw people just to make money - which is a rare quality in today's world. For the customer you helped and all the viewers on UA-cam, I'm sure you will get return sales.
I know your post is two years old but I just came across it and feel the need to comment. I think your issue is with Karma. You mentioned in the first video that the Seller wanted $4,500 firm for the bike, and that the trade-in value to a dealer was $4,800 which makes the Seller’s price fair. However, you felt it necessary to offer less than his firm (and fair) amount as what is probably a pattern you have of attempting to obtain merchandise for the absolute lowest price possible. You said in the video it was a “win-win” but how can it be when the Seller wanted $4,500 firm? The Seller obviously did not want to sell the bike at all, but his family situation (mainly his wife) made it apparent he had to sell. Many of us have been in the same situation. This is where Karma kicks in, you could have ponied up another $250 and he would have been relatively happy with the sale (see wife above) and you may never have had the problem with the fuel pump in the upcoming sale. Now, of course this is esoteric and not provable, but I’ve seen time and again how treating others well has created favorable outcomes in other areas of my life. The additional issue is paying for 100% of the repairs to the new owner of the bike when the fuel pump failed. I think paying 50% would have sufficed as you had no knowledge of any issues when you sold the bike, but I understand why you did it. Your action in paying the full amount is very commendable and shows your overall sense of fairness, which is a dichotomy of sorts from your dealings when you purchased the bike in the first place. In general, I see the activities of a good person and wish you well in your life and motorcycling journey! 😊
Like most used car sales you sign an as is no warranty clause. I think you could do that next time so you will not be liable. I think if you are honest to the buyer about what you know about the bike is all you can do. Makes me wonder if there is a bigger issue with the bike sounds almost like there is some else causing the fuel pump to fail. Two fuel pump failures, Hmmmm…???
My 2 worse sells I sold a VTX 1300R To a guy that said he could ride but 3 miles from my house as I was going to deposit some of the sell I found him piled up he had blew a curve an crashed yep he tired to sue me but Due to what he told witness it was threw out 2nd guy had the bike A Suzuki M50T a month told me bike was bad nothing but problems said he had chatttery valves turns out when I went to Look at the bike he had gutted the stock exhaust Told that dude he was on his own For any real Tech knows Back pressure keeps cold air from being sucked in on hot Vavles
Yeah, those are pretty bad. A faulty fuel pump ain't so bad after all. Lol.
You did the right thing, but also it would be fair if you paid half and new owner half...because technically and legally you didn't have to pay anything.
A good used ebay pump... or you do half on new pump repair...
You did everything right.
I think you did the right thing with the new buyer although the previous owner sucks. We all learn from the good and bad experiences . good karma would come back to you with more than $300 bucks. Keep up the good work. Nos vemos😎
Thanks, brotha! Hope the fam is doing well!
By the way this story made me be a subscriber to your channel.
they didn't bleed/prime the pump could ve been fixed cheaper
Import isn't always the way to go , when the problems start they keep coming . The prices in repairs just isn't worth it to me .
i'm very impressed with your actions regarding that situation. i said very. :}
this is what i know: when the first interaction is shady, the whole situation demands extra attention... i found disrespectful the fact that the seller made you drive an hour with your batt charger just to find out the issues are not with the battery. any major repair should come with a warranty... if it doesn't, there's a reason for it.
These bikes are all fuel issues. My buddy has a Vulcan 900 with 5K miles and has had 3 different fuel pumps. His had the same issue. Everyone rants and raves quantum fuel pumps but they’re actually garbage. Unfortunately only other option is the Kawasaki one and they’re $400 for just the pump from the dealer, not even the full assembly just the pump. The kawi pumps can’t be good considering when he bought the bike with 3k miles it already had a quantum in it. Why I ride a Harley. Way more customization, way more aftermarket support, easy and affordable performance upgrades and just an overall more simple machine.
